Kurogiri's eyes narrowed at UA's summer break homework. It probably wasn't designed to be difficult; it was probably designed to be busy work, but something about it was still bothering him.
He was stuck on the English homework in particular.
Write: The boy sleeps a lot in class, in English. Some of the phrases bothered him. He knew the answers, but it felt oddly familiar.
Write: The radio show was great, in English.
They were always short phrases, but Kurogiri could only assume with the mention of a radio show that they were targeted towards things the pro hero Present Mic liked. He was the English teacher at UA, right?
Why do some of these phrases make my head hurt? It was like he had heard some of them, in English specifically, but they were locked away by a veil of fog.
Was this body…Really really good at English? He wondered. No, that couldn't be it. Some of the phrases he recognized but couldn't properly translate.
He didn't need to know. He didn't need to think about it.
Literature, English and History he could do. Hero history and laws he hoped Wikipedia had answers for him, because he sure didn't know much. Math was a little trickier. He felt himself drowning in numbers.
I'll ask the rest of the league for help. Hopefully one of them can aid me and I can pass it off as a bonding exercise. While Shigaraki had been putting the finishing touches on their plan, Kurogiri had been running the new recruits through bonding exercises to try to make them work well together. Most of it was just generic party games like Jenga, 20 questions, etc.
Twice and Toga were ecstatic about this. Dabi was less so.
He'd pass off math as a bonding exercise and then compile the work and answers onto Toru's sheet. He was trying his best, not only to not out Toru as a cheater, but because Toru was depending on him for once.
There was one other homework assignment that was puzzling him. It was a "What I did over summer break" essay, it was required to be 3 pages.
He pawned that off on Shigaraki. Hopefully it would help him learn how to write better. Kurogiri was in charge of his education, and it was always helpful to have new assignments.
"So, you want me to type up an essay pretending I'm Toru and talking about what I did over summer break…" Shigaraki frowned when Kurogiri handed him the assignment.
"Yes, that is correct." Kurogiri responded. "If you would prefer to write it handwritten and have me type it out that would also work…" Shigaraki's handwriting was atrocious, he had never completed kindergarten, and All for One and Kurogiri had too much trouble correcting how he held a pencil, so they just let him be.
"I have no idea what fake Toru the teenage girl would do! How the hell am I supposed to do this without giving her away?" Shigaraki asked. "I don't even want to do dumb UA homework…"
"Just make something up. You and Toru have spent a long time together. I'm sure you have some ideas on how to write an essay pretending to be her." Kurogiri told him.
Shigaraki looked none too pleased with this. He started writing. "I had a period this week-"
"Tomura Shigaraki, that is not what girls write about in their essays!" Kurogiri corrected.
"How should I know? I'm not a teenage girl. Are you? Are you absolutely sure they don't talk about that stuff?" Shigaraki asked.
Kurogiri sighed. He was pretty sure, but that made him question things. He cleared his throat. "Well, you could ask Toga-No Magne. Toga doesn't seem like a good judge for that sort of thing. But let's steer clear of discussing in detail bodily anatomy on an essay Toru will turn in? Just…Make up some fun things."
Shigaraki looked like he hated this. And then his eyes suddenly sparkled. He chuckled to himself. It sounded evil.
"I know exactly what to write this essay about…"
Kurogiri hoped it was something good. I assigned him this task to hopefully help his relationship with Toru too. If he gets some say in the fake persona she's created, maybe he'll take it less personally that she's even at a hero school.
He had no idea that he had now signed up Toru to be a gamer. He might not have cared if he knew. It was less homework for him!
Kurogiri passed some questions around at the league of villain bar. They were math questions.
I don't think Toru is watching our discussions today. Which is good. He hadn't noticed her tap on him or anything to alert him of her presence. Likely she was investigating someone's house without them hovering by.
"I was thinking for today to help promote quick thinking and analysis, we could work on some of these problems." Kurogiri suggested. "Only do it if you're feeling up to the challenge." He tried to bait them into doing the homework he volunteered to do.
He'd take answers from all of them and then the answer that made the most sense he'd put on the worksheet.
"Um…These are math problems. Is the league of villains seriously making us do math problems?" Dabi asked.
"You're just making these to annoy me, huh?" Mustard mumbled to himself.
"No, no, no. Math promotes the brain to gain analysis skills. I thought it might be helpful. Teamwork can be created via working together to solve hard problems." Kurogiri explained.
"Well…It beats truth or dare like yesterday." Spinner shrugged.
"It's better than nothing. I appreciate these activities to pass time until Shigaraki gives us our next big event." Magne admitted.
"Sounds fun! I'm game!" Twice agreed. He then put the paper right up against his face. "On second thought…Uhh I dropped out of middle school…" He admitted.
"I recognize some of these!" Toga clapped, "I can help you, Twice! We can do them together!"
Twice cheered up. "You're amazing, Toga!"
"Yeah, I'm out too…I never graduated High school…" Spinner awkwardly admitted.
It seemed many of the league members were looking awkwardly about their education status. Kurogiri saw Dabi hurriedly answering questions, but all of the answers were clearly wrong and by his speed it looked purposeful.
"I was no good at math…Sorry, Kurogiri…And uhhh I also didn't really graduate…" Magne admitted.
Compress looked appalled. "Am I the only college graduate here?"
"You went to college, man? You are way out of all of our league." Spinner was shocked.
Compress came to the rescue and swiftly did the math questions.
Thank god…Kurogiri thought to himself. I suppose that answers my question of whether or not my body ever graduated high school. Either it wasn't that intelligent, or it never graduated, and these math questions were way too hard for it. It could have been both. Wait…. If I never graduated does that mean I'm still a teenager?
He looked down at the wine he was currently serving. Was he allowed to serve it? Was he old enough to handle alcohol?
I am an adult now; I have been alive long enough to be an adult and I am Shigaraki Tomura's caretaker. That clearly has to be an adult. And also, villains don't follow the rules. That doesn't matter. Kurogiri reassured himself.
It was the evening of the fourth day that Kurogiri felt a familiar tapping on his sleeve. The door to the villain bar was swinging open. Spinner had just left.
Toru must have arrived through there. She had probably been waiting for someone to exit so she could enter, since she didn't know if anyone was currently inside the bar.
The bar was mostly empty right now, aside from Twice. Twice always stayed the longest because he preferred to be near others rather than being alone.
Kurogiri felt another tap, Toru was trying to get his attention. She then moved his sleeve towards Twice and formed out an x with her fingers on his sleeve so he would know not to alert Twice of her.
Did she not like Twice when she investigated him? Kurogiri wondered.
"I…Um…Have some rare wines I need to pull out from the back room." Kurogiri told Shigaraki and Twice.
Twice knew about the back room. There should be nothing suspicious about him opening the room.
"We don't store the rare wines in there—Oh." It took Shigaraki a moment to realize Toru was likely there.
"Do you need help carrying anything?" Twice asked, flexing. He probably just wanted to be included.
"No. Would you spend some time with Tomura Shigaraki instead?" Kurogiri asked. "Since Spinner just left, he doesn't have a second for Mario Kart…"
"You got it!" Twice saluted.
"Fine…. I like beating newbs anyway…" Shigaraki sighed, knowing it was his job now to distract Twice.
Kurogiri opened the door to the back room, walking into it, and slowly closing the door behind him.
Toru hadn't found much in Dabi's abandoned building hideout. Most of what was in there were the basic necessities to live, besides some camera equipment and a laptop for some reason. She was planning to do some basic searches for him online before continuing her investigation.
She immediately went to the computer in the backroom to start searching for anything that might be Dabi's social media accounts.
I can't report on him yet. I'm not sure after all if he is a Todoroki. She needed to be sure, first. And there was only one place she could investigate that.
"Did…Twice not pass the inspection?" Kurogiri asked, watching her hurriedly type away.
I don't think he's the brightest bulb in the box, but if the league deems him necessary than he's necessary. Nothing I can do about that. Toru thought.
Truthfully Twice was fine. He didn't look like the type to betray the rest of the league. And if he could duplicate Toru that would be very helpful to the league, especially during the summer camp. However, if Twice learned that Dabi was a traitor, Toru wasn't sure if he would side with the league or his new friend. He might try to smooth things over between them. She just didn't have enough information to how he responded to deception.
"No…He seems to be exactly who he said he was." Toru responded. "I don't believe he would betray us. If he got captured his desire to have friends and not be alone would make it unlikely that he'd spill anything during police interrogation."
"So, is it a personal thing then? Do you not wish to meet him?" Kurogiri asked. "Now would be a perfect time to introduce you-"
"I'm okay with meeting him, if the league deems it necessary." Toru said harshly. "If Master wants multiple of me, then it makes sense for us to meet. It's not my opinion that matters after all, it's Master's. And if he's left things up to Shigaraki then I will do as Shigaraki wants, but…"
"But?" Kurogiri asked
"I want to finish my investigation of Dabi. And Twice's desire to help his friends might go both ways. If Dabi turns out to be dangerous to the league, I don't want to risk Twice betraying us." Toru explained.
"Ah." Kurogiri responded. "In my professional opinion, neither of them seems dangerous to the league. Both of them hate heroes, and that's all that's really needed to be a member—"
Toru wasn't listening. She had found a hit. Dabi's viewtube account. It had 0 videos, 0 subscribers, and no icon, but it existed. Was all his equipment there to eventually start a viewtube account? Was he some aspiring dreamer?
"…What are you searching?" Kurogiri asked, looking through her at the computer screen. He was aware she had been tuning him out and decided to engage her on some other level.
"I was trying to find out if Dabi has any social media accounts with information on him. He has a viewtube account, and from what I uncovered about his hideout he seems into video recording." Toru explained.
"Ah. That makes sense." Kurogiri didn't seem surprised.
Toru turned to him. "…Did he already mention this?" Was she doing useless internet searches because it was already known?
"No. Not his interest in video making. But he is the most social media savvy of the league." Kurogiri admitted, "He actually helped me start the League of Villain's social media account. Said we needed to publicize ourselves better. That's how we recruited Magne, Spinner and Mustard-"
…And he didn't think to tell me this when he was explaining about them? Toru thought.
Kurogiri assumed her silence was judgmental. "I'm bad at social media. It's not one of my skill sets. That's why I had to get aid from a new member—"
"Isn't the league of villains supposed to be rather secretive and private? Isn't it easier for heroes to find us if we have a social media page? Why do we need a social media page?"
"Ah. Well, I don't publicize our location. I use a VPN and I don't publicize about our crimes. We don't have any posts and it just serves as a way for hopeful villains to contact us so we can get more recruits. We need recruits after all." Kurogiri explained.
"Why ask a new recruit to help you though? Isn't it safer to not fully trust them until we investigate them?" Toru asked.
"I asked All for One after he told me to set up a social media account to help make the league more accessible to children, who should I get to set up social media and he suggested Dabi, who was already there in the bar." Kurogiri defended.
Wait…Why did Master know that? Toru had more questions. She felt a chill as she started coming up with a reason. What…What if Master already knows everything about all the new recruits? He is Master. What if he's just testing my observational skills?
He had done that before. Set her up to spy on something he already knew about just to test her. She knew why she needed to be tested, to prove that she was still useful, but it always made her feel so useless. It kept her on her toes, at least. There was never any room for failure.
I thought I was discovering new things and helping…The things she had discovered could have easily been discovered by Shigaraki and Kurogiri though if they just asked their new comrades questions and did basic google searches.
She felt silly. Was she doing too much? Was this assignment just a test? Was she the one being observed instead of the other way around?
No. She slapped her cheeks lightly. Master, Shigaraki and Kurogiri, probably wouldn't be able to figure out the connection between Todoroki and Dabi. Only I can. I'm the one in a class with Todoroki. Master's never met him. Toru encouraged herself.
She was now even more determined to uncover Dabi's secrets.
I'll prove myself to Master. I'll make him remember how useful I am! I will! She told herself.
"There's some part of my investigation that's required closer to my house." Toru admitted. "Would you teleport me back, Kurogiri, and retrieve me tomorrow evening?"
"Of course." Kurogiri agreed, more than happy to help.
To investigate Todoroki, Toru the spy isn't needed. I need to be Toru the cheerful high school girl. Todoroki's classmate was much more likely to be able to infiltrate his home than trying to sneak into Endeavor, pro hero number 2's house.
Kurogiri warped Toru into her room. She immediately went to her phone to message Mina and Tsuyu who would provide an alibi to her investigation.
Kurogiri seeing that she might use the phone, left.
She knew where the Todoroki household was. Most everybody did since it was the house of someone famous. It didn't take much work to figure out what nice parks and entertainment was near there.
She saw that she had missed some messages from the 'Girls of Class A group chat'. From what it looked like scrolling down the missed messages mostly Mina, Tsuyu and Jiro were talking. Yaoyorozu had sent a message at the very beginning of break saying her family bought a beach house for a staycation and their phone data and wi-fi would be turned off for a meditative cleanse. Uraraka had messaged that she wouldn't be able to talk much because her phone data couldn't be paid for this week. It was two different extremes.
Besides that, Mina was asking the group if they could hang out a lot of the time. Tsuyu was sending whatever pictures of animals she saw, and Jiro was sending music recs. There was also a lot of memes she had missed out on.
She quickly texted her friends:
Toru: Sorry, I've been off the grid! I'm available to hang out tomorrow. I found this place with some great scenery, and I thought we could meet there for a walk? Gotta keep ourselves in shape for the summer camp after all!
She made sure to put a lot of emojis in her message, to appear cheerful.
Mina: Girl, where have you been? We aren't supposed to be vacationing, LMAO. You've been kinda MIA.
Jiro: Tell the no vacationing thing to Yao-Momo…When I asked her, she said buying a beach and having a staycation wasn't a vacation so she was in the clear. I guess staycation is kinda different but…Sorry, I guess I'm venting, aren't I? It's fine! Have you been having a 'staycation' too, Toru?
Toru: Sorry…as soon as break started, I started watching that romantic drama people have been talking about 'To the Stars'. It's sooo good! I just kept binging it. I hope Darian convinces Teto that he is the guy she's been talking about online. Rn she thinks he's just trolling her because he saw her messages in class.
Toru had read the summary in message boards; she was glad she knew enough to be able to converse with people about it.
Mina: Lmao. That one's so sweet, just wait till you get to the tragedy! Oops, little bit of a spoiler, my bad. You should have told me you were watching it! We could have had a watch party!
Jiro: Shut up about your spoilers!
Toru: My parents don't like me having friend's over. Apparently, I get too wild and hectic and make a mess. That's why if we hang out it has to be elsewhere. So? Are you up for a nature walk tomorrow?
The Todoroki family household happened to be in the same areas as a nice park.
Mina: Lmao. Somehow that makes perfect sense for you, Toru. I get pretty wild too. And yeah, I'd love to hang! Where to?
Jiro: I can't. I promised my parents I'd help them with some music thing. They're musicians, you know? Maybe Yao-Momo or Uraraka will want to come? Do you want me to send them a handwritten letter since cellphone data isn't reaching them right now?
Toru: I'd hate to interrupt Yaomomo on her rest, so that's all right…She's probably studying too during her staycation.
Mina: She would be! She's definitely the type to do that LMAO
Toru: Do you think Uraraka's available? I thought she'd be spending time with Midoriya or Iida.
Mina: Oh probably! We don't want to interrupt her then. It's not like she'd spend the entire break at home. She's probably winning some points with her prospective suitors.
Toru doubted Iida was a prospective suitor of Uraraka's, but she didn't correct Mina.
Tsuyu: It's late and you text too fast…..
Tsuyu finally responded with a complaint
Tsuyu: I can't. Satsuki is sick and I have to look after her.
Satsuki was Tsuyu's little sister. From what Toru had heard she had two siblings and looked after them after school a lot. She was quite protective of them.
Toru: That's fine! And Nadia Nature Park is where I was thinking of going, Mina. Poor Satsuki! Does she want us to visit and cheer her up?
Toru was mostly being polite. She didn't actually want to spend valuable time at Tsuyu's house. She was gambling on Tsuyu saying no to protect them from whatever Satsuki's sickness was.
Tsuyu: I don't want you two to get sick from her cold…So probably not. =( Take some pictures for me though!
Jiro: Have fun you two! Maybe we can hang out another day?
Mina: Yeah, sounds good! What time, Toru?
Toru: 9 am
Too early would scare Mina away. She was fine with having only one friend as an alibi. With another person, her actions wouldn't look quite as suspicious.
Mina always spoke about Todoroki being the hottest boy in Class A. She'd be more than willing to drop by after their walk if Toru casually suggested it.
And if Todoroki has a relative that looks like Dabi I'm sure there will be pictures somewhere. Or I can ask about his family. Toru thought.
Todoroki wasn't the friendliest, but he might be willing to talk to Toru due to the damage he thought he had done to her. And if he wasn't talkative from what it sounded like in media articles his sister, Fuyumi, was very friendly.
Hopefully Dabi' secrets would show themselves soon. And if it was just a coincidence? Well then, she had at least checked things out when she was suspicious.
Either way she'd have answers.
My sister took personal offense to the fact that Tsuyu, Mina and Toru had a group chat all to themselves so I added in the other class 1-A girls. The reason Jiro might seem like an afterthought is because my sister was like "TSUYU CAN'T BE THERE. She isn't friends with Toru." Anyway that's why Jiro's here. Didn't want to write too much so Yaoyorozu and Ochako didn't make it in too.
My sister also insisted that we see Kurogiri do the homework.
