Chapter 1: Accidentally in Love 💘

Shoto Todoroki was clueless when it came to love.

He'd been emotionally stifled through most of his life. He had a few good memories from his childhood, scattered and fuzzy as they were. His relationship with his mother was the core of his affection, but he had grown closer to his siblings the more he spent time with them. He even had some respect and care for his father… though admittedly not a lot.

In general, his life had become more than the tolerable mess it was before. He gradually became more open with his emotions, allowing himself to trust and befriend others from his class. He enjoyed discussing school and hero related activities with his classmates. He enjoyed the freedom of lunchtime and hearing about other people's lives and even took an interest and concern in them. He enjoyed discovering new things… about himself, his friends, and his surroundings.

Overall he was happy.

"Todoroki-kun!" Midoriya adjusted his backpack as he approached Todoroki's desk. "Your History test scores are always really good. Do you think you can help me study for the quiz on Monday?"

Todoroki's hand paused as he put his notebook away. His eyes shifted up, looking into the eager eyes of his friend and classmate.

"Sure, I'm visiting my mother on Sunday, but if you want we can study together on Saturday." He replied.

"That's perfect. How is your mother doing anyway?" Midoriya's smile gentled into affection. "Did she get the card I sent her?"

"Yes, though I'm surprised you sent her a birthday card." He stood up and shouldered his pack. "I didn't think you'd remember that when I told you."

"Oh I uh…" He poked his fingers together nervously. "Well I was out shopping and I happened to see the rack of birthday cards. I thought it would be a little odd for me to send her one even though I've never met her in person."

That was true enough… but Todoroki knew Midoriya well. The guy was someone who wanted to bring smiles to everyone, strangers and casual acquaintances included.

"She thought it was sweet, and she liked the little sketch you made of us. She thought it was cute. So did I." Todoroki shrugged, but the smallest of smiles spread when he saw Midoriya's face go bright red.

"Wah! You saw that?" Midoriya covered his face with his hands to hide his embarrassment to little succession. "I was just gonna sign it, but then I started doodling out of nervous habit!"

"You don't have to be embarrassed by it." He felt his phone buzz in his pocket and he pulled it out. He grimaced a little when he saw his father's number on the read out. "I gotta go. The old man is having dinner with some guys from the Heroic's committee and wants me to tag along. I wasn't gonna go, but he's being unusually persistent."

"Well if the Heroics Committee is involved it's probably really important." He smiled.

"DEKU!" Bakugo slammed the classroom door open. "How long do you expect me to wait on you? Get your lazy ass moving!"

"Oh! Right! Sorry, Kacchan!" Midoriya waved. "I'll see you back at the dorm, okay?"

"Yeah…" Todoroki watched stoically as Midoriya walked to Bakugo. To outsiders, the two of them would seem like bitter rivals… but Todoroki knew better. Midoriya and Bakugo had a special connection… something indescribable and intimate that no one but the two of them could explain.

He knew the two were childhood friends, and that there were things the two of them knew about each other that no one else would… but there seemed to be something else that created that bond.

Ba-Bump… Ba-Bump

There it was again, Todoroki thought and held his chest. The expression on his face changed from stoic to pained. He had to sit back down again, and find his breath. What was happening to him? Why was he feeling like this?

What was this feeling of unease, panic, and dissatisfaction he felt where Midoriya was concerned?

"You alright, Todoroki-san?" Yaoyorozu, who had walked to her desk to collect her own things, took notice of his expression. "Are you sick?"

"No, I'm fine." He let out a slow easy breath as the sensation passed. "Just thinking about something upsetting is all."

"Do you want to talk about it?" She crouched down, setting her hand on his knee and giving him a look of support. "I'm willing to listen."

She would, Todoroki thought as he looked at the kind expression on her face. He knew he needed to open up to someone about these feelings he had for Midoriya… but just couldn't bring himself to do so.

"Maybe I will, once I figure out what exactly it is that's upsetting me." He rubbed the back of his neck. He wasn't even sure how to even begin explaining it to someone else. This feeling wasn't new to him… but it wasn't entirely familiar either. It was a change that had happened gradually over the course of their three years in high school.

Midoriya was one of the few people he trusted completely, because of his open and caring personality. If he needed someone to talk to, if he needed advice, or even if he just wanted company, Midoriya was the one he went to first.

So why did he only feel like this around him?

What was happening between them to cause him to feel so anxious? Neither he nor Midoriya had done anything particularly noteworthy… it was just a sensation that had grown more and more noticeable.

Friends and classmates might be the easiest way to define their relationship… but Shoto knew it was far more special than that. Ever since the Sports Festival during their first year, Midoriya had become a key person in his life. All thanks to a few simple words:

"It's yours, your quirk not his!"

Those words had changed his perspective and had ultimately made him change the way he'd been living his life for the better. Midoriya had lit a fire under him, literally and metaphorically speaking. He rivaled him, motivated him… and inspired him to be better than he was.

Their relationship had only grown from there.

In Hosu, he'd stared at the message Midoriya had sent with only his location, puzzled at first, but his heart had started beating irregularly… Anxiousness, concern, and just a hint of panic was how he could best describe how he'd been feeling. He remembered thinking...

Something's wrong… I need to find him… I need to be by his side.

Looking back on it now, his thoughts and actions were kind of embarrassing. Though his instincts had been right and Midoriya had needed help, a simple message like that could have been sent for a number of reasons. There normally would be no need to overreact like that. Afterall, no one else in their class had had that reaction when they'd received the message. It was only after the report on the news about Stain's attack that they'd put two and two together.

He had been the only one to jump to conclusions… conclusions that had ultimately saved Iida's life.

His phone buzzed in his pocket again, breaking his thoughts and making his temple throb with annoyance.

"I gotta go." He stood up, and put his hands in his pockets. "Thanks for the concern, Yaoyorozu, but I'll be fine."

"Alright… if you're still feeling unwell let me know. I can make you some nice Chamomile tea." She offered with a sweet smile, and he returned with an acknowledged nod. As he left the room, he heard Ashido making ooohing noises.

"So bold, Momo-chan…" Ashido teased making kissy noises. "Someone's getting ready for Valentine's day."

"Mina-san!" Yaoyorozu flushed and held her cheeks. "That wasn't my intention at all."

"Oh, come on, Momo. We all know you've got a thing for Todoroki." Mina sighed and held her cheeks. "Who could blame you. He's clearly the best looking boy in class. So cool, aloof, and oblivious to his charms. What girl wouldn't want a piece of eye candy like that?"

"Speaking of Valentine's day though…" Hagakure nudged Mina. "We're all going to do THAT right?"

"Of course!" Mina bounced. "We're third years after all. This is our last chance to really make some first class Valentine's Chocolates for the boys."

"Mina you really like Valentine's Day, huh?" Ochako laughed. "You bought all those decorations and stuff to decorate the dorm afterall."

"I'm taking no chances this time, Uraraka." She poked her plump mochi cheek. "We can't let the season of love pass us by. Obligatory chocolates are fine, but I really want to spread the love this year ladies. This time I'm going all out and I've made special preparations to make sure of it!"

"Gero?" Tsuyu tapped her cheek and blinked curiously. "What kind of special preparations?"

"Hehehe…" Mina winked and placed a finger to her lips. "Top secret."

~Later at the Dorm~

Todoroki walked through the doors, tired and annoyed. He could still hear the annoying buzz of his father's lecture in the back of his head. The old man wasn't as strict and overbearing as before… but there were still days where he made a nuisance of himself.

He was in his third year, for crying out loud. Wasn't it about time his father trusted him to make his own decision where his career was concerned?

"Welcome back, Todoroki-kun!" Midoriya stepped out of the elevator with Bakugo behind him. That sensation fluttered in his chest again, but quickly passed as Bakugo ignored him and walked towards the common room.

"Thanks, Midoriya." Todoroki let his eyes linger on Bakugo a minute more to make sure he was a safe distance away before letting his gaze fall back on Midoriya. "What did you and Bakugo do after class?"

"Oh, well we uh…" Midoriya poked his fingers together as he laughed nervously. "Just did some training, is all. Kacchan's been helping me improve my combat skills."

"I see…" He lowered his gaze a bit and his hands clenched in his pockets as the fluttering sensation came back. "I could help you train too if you'd like. I could use the extra practice."

"Really? I'd like that." Midoriya beamed. "I need to find more variety of opponents, anyways. Shinsou's been helping me too, his quirk helps me focus on my internal analysis and keeping my muttering habits under control. Still with your quirk I could-"

Shoto watched him ramble on and theorize… and Todoroki's affection for him just grew. The guy was always thinking about ways to improve. He was humble, hard working, and compassionate for other people. How could you not admire someone like that?

It was odd, but Todoroki suddenly had an urge to touch him. Watching his mouth move, those small but full lips, he wondered what it would be like to rub his thumb over them. Were they as soft as they looked?

"T-Todoroki-kun?" Midoriya's voice came out pitched and nervous, snapping him from his trance. He then realized just how close their faces were… to the point where he felt Midoriya's breath on his face. "Y-You're kinda close."

"Sorry… guess I'm tired." He slowly backed away and lay a hand on his head. "My mind's been in a weird place all day."

"You do look a little flushed. Are you sick? Maybe you should go to your room and lie down." He reached up placing a hand on Shoto's forehead.

Ba-Bump… Ba-Bump

The fluttering came back… but different this time. He wasn't necessarily anxious… but rather… flustered?

As Midoriya's hand started to pull back he snagged him by the wrist and looked into his eyes. He needed a few moments longer to analyze what was happening to him. Was this sensation he was feeling… attraction?

"Todoroki-kun? What's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I-" He wasn't entirely adverse in sexual dynamics, or romantic feelings… but it was still a pretty foreign subject to him. "I don't know."

"You're acting really strangely. Come on, let's get you to bed." He adjusted so the two of them were side to side. Todoroki's grip on Midoriya's wrist slipped as he was ushered towards the elevator. He remained silent on the trip up to his room, grateful that Midoriya did the same and not asking any question that he didn't have the answers to.

He reached into his pocket for his key, and paused when he saw the pink box dangling on his door handle.

"What's this?"

"Eh? Oh! Cute isn't it?" Midoriya unhooked it from the door handle and handed it out to him. "Ashido-san has been passing these around. They're Love Fortunes for Valentine's Day. She gave one to each of us."

"A love fortune?" He raised a brow at that, eyeing the box in Midoriya's palm.

"Yep! If I remember correctly from what Ashido-san said, you're supposed to hold it tightly in your hand and pray to the spirit inside. If the spirit feels the sincerity and empathizes with your love it'll-"

"You didn't seem the type to really go for this kind of thing, Midoriya." Todoroki interrupted, wanting to veer away from this kind of conversation.

"Not normally… but it's fun isn't it?" He laughed. "Ashido and the other girls are prepping for Valentine's day, even though it's still two weeks away and I can't help, but admire their enthusiasm for it."

"If you say so…" He reached out to take the box.

"Mmmm I'd like to be as open about it as they are, someday. After all…" Midoriya sighed, his eyes softening as he looked up at Todoroki. "Who doesn't want to find true love?"

Ba-Bump!

The fluttering came back full force at his words. As their hands brushed together and sandwiched the box between them fire shot out of his fingertips instinctively. Midoriya yelped and jumped back, the fortune falling to the ground as it caught fire and burnt to ash between them.

"Wha! Todoroki-kun!?"

"Midoriya!" Shock came first then deep concern as he reached out with his right hand this time and rubbed the cooling touch over his palm. "Did I burn you?"

"No, no, I'm okay." He yanked his hands back and waved them out defensively. "Really, I'm fine. I'm just worried about you. I've never seen you lose control of your quirk like that."

"I'm sorry…" his expression turned pained and he looked down at his left hand. "I don't know what came over me."

"It's okay… but you really should get some rest." Midoriya eyed the box of ashes on the ground. "I'll see if Ashido-san has another one. I'm sure she'll understand it was just an accident."

"Yeah.. okay…" he crouched down and picked up the charred box in his right hand. He felt Midoriya's hand reach out and touch his shoulder, and he jerked away so the flutters wouldn't bring the flames back. "Goodnight, Midoriya." He hurried into his room.

"Goodnight…" Midoriya sighed, his eyes looking sad and concerned at his friend and classmate. "I hope you feel better."

Todoroki listened as Midoriya's steps echoed down the hallway. He placed his back against the door and let himself fall down til he was curled up in a ball.

That proved it…

He was in love with Midoriya.

"Not good." He held his head and leaned heavily into his open palm and clenched tightly on the little charred box in the other. "What am I supposed to do now? Should I tell him? What if he doesn't like it? Should I ignore it? Can I ignore it? I don't know what to do! Someone tell me what to do!"

He shut his eyes tightly and grit his teeth as all his emotions sputtered out of him. As he dealt with his emotionally overwhelmed state, he didn't notice the box in his hand glowing, and the charm inside activating.

Todoroki lifted his head up as a sweet scent filled his nose. For a moment he thought his room had a misty pink hue to it… and he stood up to find out what might be causing it… but found himself passing out cold.

~Meanwhile~

Midoriya stepped out of Mr. Aizawa's room, bowing to him once more before closing the door behind him. He wanted to make sure that their teacher knew about Todoroki's odd behavior and condition. It wasn't like him to be so out of it.

In the three years Midoriya had known him, Todoroki always seemed so conscious of his health and sure of his mind. Even back when he was so full of angst and aggression he was still always sure of himself, focused on his goals and determined to carry on.

After everything he'd been through, Midoriya had hoped Todoroki had found happiness and contentment, but there was definitely something wrong with him. What could it be? Todoroki was more than guaranteed acceptance and popularity once in hero work so he shouldn't be worried about his career. Was it family related, he wondered? He made peace with his father, for the most part, and seemed to be getting along well with his siblings. His mother's condition was improving everyday and they were seeing each other often and were very close.

"Maybe he's having trouble with school work, we'll be getting together tomorrow to study so maybe I can ask him then if he's having any problems. Maybe I should ask Iida and Kacchan to sit in with us just in case. They are the smartest next to Yaoyorozu-san, and I don't feel right asking a girl to go into Todoroki's room." He muttered to himself, rubbing his chin as he walked through the common room.

"Midoriya, you're doing it again." Tsuyu tapped his cheek with her tongue and snapped him out of his inner ramble.

"Gah! Oh, Tsuyu-chan. Sorry about that." He flustered and rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry, I'm just a little worried about Todoroki-kun. He got back a little while ago and I think he might be sick."

"I knew it!" Yaoyorozu stood up from the couch when she heard this. "He didn't look well at all when he left the classroom earlier. I shall prepare some herbal tea for him." She hurried to the kitchen.

"Thank you, Yaoyorozu-san." He smiled gratefully then looked to the other girls. "Ah, Ashido-san. Do you have any more of those fortunes? Todoroki-kun accidentally burnt his box with his quirk."

"Really? Ah dang it." Ashido sighed and slumped. "Those fortunes were actually kind of expensive so I didn't get extras."

"Oh, I see… That is a shame." His eyes lowered sadly and he twiddled his thumbs.

"Ah, don't look so down, Midoriya." Kaminari rocked in his seat, charging his cell phone with the plug in his mouth. "I don't think Todoroki thinks about things like love and relationships. Guy is too stoic and oblivious about that kinda thing."

"I don't know about that, Kaminari-kun." Midoriya turned his palm over and stroked fingers over the slightly reddened area where Todoroki's fire had singed him. "I know that he feels and thinks about the same things we do… I just don't think he knows how to express it."

~Next Day~

"Hello… Good Morning… wakey wakey, eggs and bakey!"

The sugary sweet voice made Todoroki's head hurt. The sunlight peeked through his window and he could feel the warmth of it on his face. He knew it was morning… but wanted to continue on sleeping.

"Go away…" he grumbled and shifted.

"Oh no you don't… wake up, sleepy head! It's time to rise and shine!"

There was a weight on his chest now, nothing heavy, but just enough to make it uncomfortable. He groaned again but this time his eyes opened and he stare into a pair of annoyed hot pink eyes. He blinked a few time, his vision blurring and then focusing on the face of the person in front of him. The girl was the size of a barbie doll, with sparkling angelic wings, flowy pixie- pink hair that curled and fluffed around a sweet face that was decorated with little heart cheeks. She had on a white dress that reminded him of the Grecian Muses, but it was decorated with pink accents, ribbons, and jewelry.

"What a weird dream…" he murmured, and earned a giggle.

"Hehehe, this is no dream, silly." The pixie girl floated up to eye level as he sat up in bed and looked bleary eyed at her. "Time for introductions. Greetings, Shoto Todoroki, my name is Be-OWOWOW! THAPPH HURRRSHHH!" She wriggled and complained as his fingers which pinched her cheeks.

"Oh… you're right… I'm not dreaming." he spoke casually and let go.

"BAKA!" She whacked him on the head and rubbed her sore cheeks. "You're supposed to pinch yourself, not me!"

"Uh… right…" he grabbed his own cheek and pulled on it. "Ow… nope, still not dreaming."

"Happy now?" She put her hands on her hips and huffed. Putting her smile back into place she did a little spin. "Now then, as I was saying… My name is Bella. I'm your love spirit and after sensing your emotions and hearing your cries for help, I've decided to bestow my gifts upon you, Shoto Todoroki." She gave him a saucy wink. "I look forward to working with you."
