Stupid Cupid
Chapter 2: Compatibility Test
"My name is Bella. I'm your love spirit and after sensing your emotions and hearing your cries for help, I've decided to bestow my gifts upon you, Shoto Todoroki." She gave him a saucy wink. "I look forward to working with you."
"I see…" Shoto stared bleary eyed at the high spirited sprite. Her bubbly personality gave him major Mina vibes… which wasn't surprising as Mina was the one who supplied the charm in the first place.
"I see? That's all you've got to say to me?" She floated up as he stood up all the way and ruffled his hair. He looked around with a bleary expression, and spotted the cup of tea sitting on his desk. "Oh, one of your classmates left that there. Some fluffy green dude came in, saw you unconscious and moved you into your futon."
"Midoriya…" Todoroki held his face and lifted the cup downing it cold. He wasn't about to let Midoriya's efforts, and he guessed Yaoyorozu's tea, go to waste. Once the tea was gone he turned and saw the pixie just staring at him impatiently. "Oh, you're still here?"
"Ruuuuude, did you not hear what I just told you. I am your love spirit." She placed a hand to her chest, her cheeks puffing out from annoyance.
"Love spirit, huh?" He commented soberly and started taking off his clothes. "Excuse me."
"So you're the shy type, huh? Okay I'll give you a minute. " She turned her back humming. "You're a lot more quiet and subdued then my usual clients." She kept talking, pulling out a nail file so she could tend to her manicure. "Normally they'd be asking all kinds of questions, freaking out, and-" she trailed off when she heard the door open. "Huh? Hey wait! Where are you going?!" She hurried after him, slipping through just before the door closed. "School won't start for another two hours, why are you in such a hurry?"
"I'm going to Recovery Girl. Yaoyorozu and Midoriya were right, I'm clearly sick and delirious from my fever." He answered, concerned that his delusion was not only talking, but he was talking back to it.
"No you're not, this isn't a delirium… hey hold up!" Bella grabbed the back of his blazer and tugged on it. "Come on, hear me out will yah!"
He stopped at the elevator doors and turned his head in her direction.
"Your name is Bella, right?"
"Yes…" she huffed and puffed from exertion. Clenching her fists together she put them on her hips and scowled at him. "I'm telling you, you're not sick, or delirious, and you're not dreaming. I'm here to help you, and I can't return to my home until I've completed that mission."
"What mission? How could you possibly help me?" The question wasn't harsh, he was genuinely curious and confused about her presence here. Bella sighed heavily and her face turned serious.
"Your heart calls out for another person." She taps her tiny finger over his heart. "My aura responded to that call, and I was summoned here to find that person and bring you two together."
"I see…" Shoto sighed and pushed the down button for the elevator. "I'm sorry to tell you that your mission is not possible."
"Oh don't be silly, nothing's impossible, especially with a cutie like you." She sat herself down on his shoulder and teasingly pinched his cheek. "Why I bet this girl already likes you back and you just don't know it yet."
"About that-" Todoroki started to speak but the door opened up and Izuku was already inside.
"Oh Todoroki-kun youre awake. I'm so glad you're alright." Izuku sent a bright smile in his direction.
"Oh hey, it's the fluffy green boy." Bella giggled. "He's up super early. Must be a morning person."
"Good Morning, Midoriya." Shoto responded, grateful his tone was calm despite his heart thumping loudly in his chest.
Bella's aura responded to the rapid beating of Shoto's heart. Her eyes blinked and immediately focused on Izuku. He glowed with the same pink aura that resonated with Shoto's heart. Bella rapidly looked between the two, and her own face flushed as realization hit her.
"EH!? FOR REAL!?" She slapped both hands on her cheeks. "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!"
Izuku looked Shoto up and down checking for any signs of illness. He did seem a bit dazed and flushed still, but he seemed to be acting normal at least. He didn't notice the pink pixie circling his head making squeaky noises.
"How's your fever? Did you sleep well?" Izuku asked, laying a hand over Todoroki's forehead. "You're still a bit warm. Are you going to go see Recovery Girl?"
"Yes that's where I was headed." He made an irritated expression at Bella who sat on Izuku's head and made girly comments about how soft and fluffy he was. "Will you stop that?"
"Stop what?" Izuku blinked in confusion.
"No, not you Midoriya." He pointed to Bella. "I'm talking about my love sprite."
"Eh?" Izuku blinked.
"Baaaaaka no one can see me or hear me, except you." Bella teased and plucked a single piece of hair from Midoriya's head. Izuku scratched his head in response but still looked confused.
"Love sprite? You're not making any sense Todoroki-kun. Did you have a weird dream or something?" He took his hand. "Come on, why don't I take you to see Recovery Girl?"
"No!" Shoto jerked his hand away, and could hear the panic in his own voice and immediately calmed it. "No, I'm fine to walk on my own. If I don't make it to class can I trouble you to tell Aizawa why I'm absent?"
"Oh sure thing, Todoroki-kun." He stepped back onto the elevator and motioned him in. They rode it down in awkward silence, minus Bella's cheerful humming. When the door opened, Shoto quickly exited.
"See you later." He told him and briskly headed out.
"Yeah, see yah." Izuku waved back walking towards the common room as Todoroki brisky exited the dorms.
"Sooo cute!" Bella squealed. "Oh this is the first time I've ever done a pairing of the same gender. My best friend Mindy did these two college girls once, and boy the stories I could tell you… but two men is super rare for us."
"Do you have a mute button?" Todoroki asked with some annoyance. "Delirium or not, your constant chattering is giving me a headache."
"Oh finky foo…" She huffed and sat back on his shoulder. "You're no fun, Shoto-kun."
"I really hope you're just a figment of my imagination." Todoroki sighed. "Otherwise things with Midoriya will just get even more awkward."
~Later at the infirmary~
"I've done a thorough check-up on you, Todoroki. I'm telling you, you're physically fine." Recovery Girl explained, tapping her cane on his shoulder, unbeknownst that she very nearly hit Bella over the head with it. "If you truly are seeing things like that pixie you mentioned, then it's definitely from a quirk related incident."
"Quirk related, huh? What should I do about it?" Shoto looked intently at the nurse, his shirt hanging open and loose on his shoulders.
"Well that really all depends on the quirk itself. Infliction related quirks are resolved in one of three ways. One, the user of said quirk cancels the effects themselves. Two, there's a time limit which means the effects will only last for so long and will eventually fade away. Three, there's certain conditions you must fulfill in order to make the quirk stop."
"I see…" Todoroki held his chin, and suddenly recalled something Bella said to him earlier. He bowed his head. "Thank you for your help, Recovery Girl."
"You're welcome. I'll give you a pass from classes just for today so you can figure out how you wanted handle this quirk related illusion." She turned to her desk and wrote out a slip. "Return to the dorm and take some time to think it over. If you still want or need my help, you know where to find me."
"Yes, Ma'am. Thank you." He finishes buttoning up his shirt and takes the slip from her. He grabs up his jacket and pack and walks out, Bella floating beside him. On the walk back to the dorm he remained silent, mulling over the choices in his head.
"Bella," he finally spoke to her as soon as they entered his room. He dropped his belongings on the door. "You said that you can't return home until you've completed your mission, correct?"
"Righto!" Bella saluted him.
"If that's the case, then it sounds like the quirk that manifested your existence is conditional. Until I fulfill those conditions, I'm stuck with you. Does that sound about right?"
"Pretty much, though you don't have to look so grumpy about it." She huffed at him when he continued to scowl at her. "I'm not here to annoy you, I'm here to help you."
"Whether you're here to help me or not, I just want things to go back to normal." He sits down on his futon and folds his legs. "So tell me what I should do in order to fulfill said conditions."
"At the rate you're going, you and I are gonna be palling around until you're eighty." She sighed heavily but then smiled. "Then again, now that we're finally on the same page, we can get started." She pulled out her wand and the piece of hair she'd taken from Midoriya.
"What are you planning to do with Midoriya's hair?"
"Hehehe, you'll see." She gently tapped her wand to the end of the curl, and spoke with a perky tone. "Cupid's Eye!"
Todoroki leaned forward, his eyes focusing on the single strand of hair which started to twitch and react. It glowed with a sort of pink hue that reminded him of Bella's aura.
"This…" Bella explained with excited anticipation. "Is a compatibility test." She let go of the piece of hair, letting it float. "While your affections are clear, sometimes the matches just aren't well suited for one another. Personality, likeability, chemistry… it's all a factor. I'm testing to see how well you and Midoriya match."
Confused… and surprisingly curious, Todoroki glanced up to stare intently at Bella. The pixie paid it no mind, concentrating on the task at hand. She hummed happily to herself, then let out an "ah ha" as the hair turned into a piece of paper containing the results.
"Alright, now let's see here…" She buried her face in the paper. "Hmm, hmm, I see…"
"So… what does it say?" Todoroki asked, wondering why he was so anxious to hear the results of the test.
"Well…" Bella finished reading the analysis and then rolled it up before making it disappear. "I've got good news and bad news." She tapped his nose with the end of her wand. "The good news is, you and Midoriya are very compatible with each other."
"Oh…" though the word came out in his usual monotone, his eyes caught some light and hope. "Okay… then what's the bad news?"
"Unfortunately…" Bella sighed and held up her hands in a shrug. "You're still currently in the friend zone. Midoriya has absolutely zero romantic interest in you."
"I see…" Todoroki hung his head and absently rubbed his chest. There was an unmistakable ache that lingered from that news. "Perhaps that's for the best."
"Now, now, no need for that frown, Shoto." Bella sat on his head and bopped him with her wand again. "All you need to do is to make him aware of you. Boys aren't automatically attracted to other boys… they need an awakening."
"An awakening?"
"Yep… and I know just what to do in these cases." She pulled out a scroll from behind her back and unraveled it showing it to Todoroki. "Ta-da! Presenting Bella's Foolproof Love Battle Plan!"
Todoroki blinked at the tiny, yet elaborately decorated scroll. There was definitely some words on the page, but the paper itself was covered in stickers and glitter to make it stand out.
"Okay…"
"Moh!" Bella huffed, shoving it in his hand before putting her hands on her hips. "Is that all you have to say? I'm telling you this is foolproof to get you and Midoriya together!"
"Thank you, I guess…" He looked down awkwardly at the small scroll. "I can't read what it says."
"Oh, silly me," Bella giggled and waved her wand. Todoroki had a moment to think that this girl's mood swings were giving him whiplash, before the scroll grew in size and he was able to read it more clearly.
Step 1: Find out if potential lovers are compatible.
Step 2: Get potential lovers to spend more quality time with each other.
Step 3: Get client to perform romantic acts of love and affection
Step 4: Get client to make something personal for their love interest
Step 5: Client must confess their feelings in a romantic setting or area of special significance to them. (If successful, move onto step 6. If not, please see "Bella's Surefire Way to Cure Heartbreak" scroll.)
Step 6: Potential lovers become lovers, share true love's kiss, and live happily ever after.
THE END!
"Well, what do you think?" Bella grinned ear to ear. "Pretty foolproof right? We've already completed step one, so we're well on our way."
"I don't know about foolproof, but…" Todoroki stared down at the list, re-reading each part methodically. "I'm guessing this list serves as the conditions of the quirk. If I perform each of them, then the quirk should be removed."
"I'm not sure you get it… but if this means that you'll do as I say, and listen to my advice then we'll go with your logic." She gives him a thumbs up. "Fulfill the conditions, and I'll be out of your hair."
"Alright then." Suddenly very serious Todoroki rolled the scroll up and stood up to put it on his desk. "We completed task one already… the second is for me to spend more quality time with Midoriya."
"Yep… earlier I mentioned an awakening, right? The best way for Midoriya to become more aware of you and see you as a potential love interest is by spending as much time with him as possible, and to give you both ample opportunities to act on each other's feelings." Bella sat on his shoulder and pinched his cheek. "Of course I'll be there too, but I'll be sure to give you boys space and only butt in if I really feel it's necessary."
"Alright… well Midoriya did want us to study together today. So I guess that counts as spending quality time with him."
"Oooh, a study date?" Bella rubbed her hands anxiously. "That's perfect. It'll give you a chance to get closer than ever. No worries, Shoto, with me at your side, there's no way you'll lose out on love."
"Heh…" Shoto glanced away. "I'm not so sure about that. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who values Midoriya."
"Hmmm? Are you saying there's a love rival?"
"I don't know about that…" He sits down at his desk and picks up a framed picture of him, Midoriya, Uraraka and Bakugo at last year's sports fest. The three of them winning out over their classmates, Bakugo took gold, Midoriya silver, and Uraraka and himself tied for bronze. His father hadn't been happy with the results, but Shoto had been content as he had given it his all, and just barely lost out against Midoriya. "I just know I'm not the only person who notices him. He's popular in his own right."
"I see…" Bella stare intently at the picture, then suddenly spun around, quick-changing into a detective hat, and coat. She blew on the pink pipe in her mouth, but instead of smoke, it blew pink heart-shaped bubbles. "This will require some investigation. I cannot let anyone get in the way of our plan."
"What do you mean investigation?" Todoroki gave her a narrowed look.
"I'm just gonna poke around your class for a bit. No worries you're the only one who can see me, remember?" She smiled around the pipe and winked at him. "Be back in a flash!"
"Wait a minute, you can't just… hey!" Todoroki rushed out to the open balcony with her, and let out an aggravated sigh as she flew right out and headed for the main building. "I've got a bad feeling about this… but I can't exactly go after her. If I suddenly show up to class raving about a love obsessed pink pixie then everyone will think I'm crazy."
"Midoriya…" Todoroki crouched down and lay his head on his folded hands. "Bella, whatever you do, don't cause him any trouble."
~Meanwhile~
Bella squeezed through the crack under the door to class 1A. She huffed a little from the exertion then floated over to Midoriya. She took another long look at him, and held her cheeks as his face frumpled while he concentrated.
"Such an ugly face, and yet he still looks so cute." She sighs and plays with his hair. "Oh, Shoto, you've got such great taste. GAH!" Bella spun around as Izuku jerks up and raises his hand.
"The answer's 101.73!"
"Correct!" Midnight gives Midoriya a thumbs up. "Midoriya you're steadily improving. I'm impressed." The bell rang and she tapped her files together. "That's all for Math. Snipe-sensei will be coming in for history so stay sharp."
Izuku's eyes glowed from the praise and he sat back down, positively beaming. Bella smiled at the honest and bright expression, but then took immediate notice of how some of his classmates reacted. There was a girl with natural pink cheeks, and a starry eyed expression on her face. Another girl with an unreadable face, but eyes that seemed to stare right through Izuku's soul… and then there was the boy right in front of Izuku, who grunted in irritation and then turned around in his seat to address him.
"So you finally caught on, have yah, nerd?"
"Yes, thanks again for helping tutor me in math, Kacchan." He beamed a little at him. "Working in those lessons along with our sparring matches really helped save time."
"Kacchan…" Bella floated over to the blonde, and plucked a piece of his hair. Bakugo jerked at the sensation and quickly waved his hand, smacking Bella right in the face.
"Da fuck was that?"
"Something wrong, Kacchan?" Izuku blinked in confusion.
"I swear something just touched me a second ago." He clicked his tongue in aggravation and glanced around.
"A bug, maybe?" Izuku also glanced around. He jolted as Bakugo waved his fist and clenched his teeth. "Kacchan, calm down it's just a bug."
"If it is a bug, I'm about to squish it til it's dead for touching me!" He stands up an shouts. "Alright you measly bug, where are you hiding? Come out so I can murder you!"
"OW! Big Bully!" She gripped the piece of hair she plucked and rubbed her nose. She floated up high and out of each and sneered down at the yelling Bakugo. "Baka! You're lucky I'm not your spirit, or I'd kick out a tooth for treating me that way!"
She took a deep breath to regain her composure. She lifted up Bakugo's strand, and the other strands of hair she'd plucked from Midoriya, Uraraka, and Tsuyu. She tapped the wand on the group… but this time when they glowed and transformed, the words she read on the paper made her face turn blue.
"You gotta be kidding me!"
