True friends are always together in spirit.- L.M. Montgomery.
A few weeks after Spencer cleaned Rachel's apartment, Rachel decided she was finally ready to move back into her apartment. Spencer had tried to convince her to stay a few more weeks, but Rachel was adamant that it was time for her to move back into her apartment. It soon became a thing where instead of going to Spencer's apartment after work, Spencer would go to Rachel's apartment.
A month had passed and it was time for Rachel to go back to work. Within the past month, Rachel had gone and seen Hannah, her boss and maternal figure and her best friend Rebecca while Spencer was at work. When it was time to go back to work, Spencer promised Rachel that he would drop her off and pick her up.
However, at 2 am when Spencer was supposed to take Rachel to work, JJ called him.
"Hello," Spencer asked in a groggy voice.
"Sorry, to wake you Spencer, but we have a case."
Spencer groaned. "Can't it wait till tomorrow morning?"
"There were already 2 bodies but another 3 were just found," JJ explained.
"Where is it?"
"New York."
"Alright, I'll be there in the next 20 minutes," Spencer said as he cut off a yawn and hung up.
He rubbed his eyes and looked at his alarm clock and groaned when he realized it was actually 2 am. Spencer sighed and dialled a number.
"Spens… You do realize the time right?" Rachel mumbled sleepily down the phone.
"Yeah, sorry for calling so late, but I can't take you to work, I have to go-"
"Solve another case?" Rachel asked.
Spencer nodded. "Yeah, I'm really sorry Rachel."
"It's fine, Spens. Go and catch the bastard or bastards and make sure you come home in one piece. I mean it Spencer, I want you back in one piece." Rachel said, sounding very intimidating down the phone.
"Of course, Ray. Go back to sleep. Night."
"Night Spens." Rachel said and then she hung up.
Four hours later, Rachel woke up and got ready for her first day back at work since her brother's death. Just before starting her shift, Rachel got a text.
Have a good day Ray, I'll call you later - Spence
Rachel smiled and went off to start her shift.
She walked to the front desk of the pediatric ward.
"Good morning Louise," Rachel said and smiled when the receptionist got up and hugged Rachel.
"OMG! I didn't know you came back today." Louise exclaimed. "I'm so happy you're back Rachel!"
Rachel smiled. "I'm glad to be back. Will you be a sweetheart and call Ms Roberston for me please?"
Louise nodded and left and Rachel waited by the reception.
"Is that my favourite doctor?" a deep voice said.
Rachel turned around and saw one of her closest friends and fellow nurse Caleb.
"Omg, Caleb, how are you? Feels like I haven't seen you in ages."
"You know, I've been doing my own thing, but I can't believe you're here."
"Did you forget that I work here?" Rachel asked. "I'm one of the best doctors here," She sassed at him.
"That is correct, you are one of the best doctors that this ward has seen, as we are very happy to have you back." Hannah Roberston, clinical lead said as she made her way to the reception. "You won't be working in resus today but will be dealing with the other patients. Nurse Jones, will shadow you. When your shift is done, please come and report to me."
Rachel and Caleb nodded and went to deal with their first patient. Their first patient was a younger girl who had broken her arm after falling off her bike onto pavement. The break in the arm wasn't bad enough to need surgery, but they put a cast on the arm and gave the young girl a sling to keep the arm steady as it healed. Their next patient was a teenage boy who was suffering from a chest infection. They hooked the boy up to some medication and gave him something to help him breathe. The day went on until it was time for Rachel's break.
As Rachel waited for her coffee, someone came behind Rachel and hugged her. Recognising the perfume, Rachel turned around.
"Is that my best friend?" Rachel asked.
"Depends, am I still your best friend?" Rebecca asked.
Rachel rolled her eyes. "Of course you are. What kind of question is that?"
As the two friends were catching up, Rachel's phone went off. It was Spencer.
We've closed the case, and we are about to leave in the next 2 hours. Can I come around for dinner? - Spens.
Sure - Ray x
"You and Spencer are spending a lot of time together," Rebecca said after reading over Rachel's shoulder. "When am I going to meet him?"
Rachel rolled her eyes. "Soon Becca, soon."
"I need to make sure he's a good man for my best friend."
"He works for the FBI, Becca, that's as good as it gets."
"Yeah, just because he's FBI material doesn't mean he's boyfriend material."
"Boyfriend material? Becca, we're not dating or have any plans to date." Rachel said.
"Sure… Totally believe that… Anyways, my break is over. See you around." Rebeccas said and walked away.
The rest of Rachel's shift wasn't that eventful and soon, she was finished and reporting to Hannah. Rachel knocked on Hannah's door and after her, a soft "come in '' opened the door to see Hannah looking through some paperwork.
"Hi Rachel," Hannah said looking up from her paperwork.
"Hi Hannah," Rachel said as she took a seat.
"How was your first day back?"
Rachel sighed. "It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Nothing triggering or anything. It was an easy day," Rachel said as she picked at her fingers.
Hannah nodded. "Do you feel like you can continue for the rest of the week full time or do you want to work part-time?"
"I think I can work full time, Hannah. I promise I'm fine," Rachel said as she gave Hannah a small soft smile.
"If you say so. But please remember that I'm here for you if you need to talk to someone," Hannah said as she stood up and gave Rachel a big hug.
Rachel sighed and allowed Hannah to hold her as she breathed in Hannah's perfume, something that she had become accustomed to.
"What are you going to do after work?" Hannah asked.
"Spencer's coming over to mine. He should be landing soon." Rachel said, pulling away from the hug.
"When am I going to meet him?"
"Soon, I promise." Rachel said as she left Hannah's office.
The case was over and the team had a few hours to kill before boarding the plane to go home.
Spencer had been disappointed that he couldn't drop Rachel off at work even though he promised he would. And for some reason, he felt the need to make it up to Rachel.
When he saw that JJ wasn't busy and wasn't surrounded by any other member of the team, Spencer went over to her.
"Hey Spencer," JJ said smiling when she saw him.
"Hi JJ, I have a question."
JJ nodded, "Sure what is it?"
"I'm thinking of getting a necklace for my mom but I'm not sure if that is a good idea."
"Why do you want to give her the necklace?" JJ asked.
"Well, it's more of a pendant than a necklace. The necklace can hold a small picture. I wanted to give it to her because I don't get to see her as often as I would like and I thought that would be a good reminder for her. " Spencer explained.
JJ nodded. "Spencer, that's such a nice idea. I think your mom will love the necklace. It's a really thoughtful idea."
Spencer nodded. "Seeing we have a few hours before boarding, can we drive to the jewellers and get the necklace."
"Sure, but I'm driving."
By the time the team was boarding the plane to go home, Spencer had in his possession the necklace that was actually for Rachel.
Opening the door to Rachel's apartment, Spencer was greeted with the smell of food cooking.
"Hey, Ray! I'm back!" He yelled.
"I'm in the kitchen!" Rachel yelled back as Spencer made his way to the kitchen.
Rachel was taking something out of the oven when she looked up at Spencer.
"Long case?" She asked.
"Yeah, it was long but we caught him," Spencer said.
"Well, the food will be ready in the next 30 minutes. Why don't you go and clean up?"
Spencer nodded. "Thanks, Ray."
"There's a clean towel laid out for you in the guest room," Rachel called out.
Once Spencer had shown and changed, the food was done, and Rachel was serving it onto plates. As the two friends ate, they talked about how their days went.
"Ray I've got something for you," Spencer said shyly handing over the necklace.
"Spencer, you didn't need to get me a gift."
"I know but I still feel bad for not being able to take you to work on your first day back. So, here's a gift to make up for it."
Rachel took the gift and opened the box to find the necklace inside. Her eyes watered slightly and she gently took the necklace into her hands.
"Spencer it's beautiful. But I can't have it. It's too expensive." Rachel said finally looking up at Spencer.
"No, take it. I wanted to give it to you and don't worry about the price."
Rachel nodded and put the necklace on.
"Thank you, Spencer."
