***** Welcome all of you! First of all, a short introduction to this fan fiction originally written in french. Started in 2012, I stopped publishing in 2016 due to personal reasons that were out of my control. Five years later, I can finally go back to it after multiple attempts.
Luckily, my English level is way better than 11 years ago (it better be!) and, although while not being perfect, allows me the freedom of translating my original work into English. Obviously the writing style presented in this story may appear poor in images or infuriating in its grammar, and I apologize in advance to the native speakers. This story has been deeply close to my heart for all these years and I have always wished to share those adventures with you guys as well!
Please bear in mind that, as explained before, the beginning was written about a "Lord of the Rings: The Trilogy, extended version and director comments" ago, so Mary Sue may pay a visit in the first chapters.
Nonetheless, I am glad to share my love for this world with you, let's sail along if you feel like it!*****
Chapter 1: Bubby-the-lost
He was annoying her to such a point! It was gonna be three months since she had arrived on that ship and she had never been able to bear his sufficiency and sarcasm. Bubble Piccadilly was fulminating while strolling down the hallways of the submarine. She was not paying attention to the junctions which created a real labyrinth through the ship. If she was getting lost, she would not have to see the mocking smile of her captain, she thought.
If she had joined the Heart Pirate crew, it was by frustration. Her initial plan of action in her adventurous life was to join Eustass Kid's and leave her lowlife pirate style behind. Sadly, he had already left the previous island on which she was at the time, after she had been searching a full year to meet him. She then proceeded to ask Trafalgar Law if she could join his crew, knowing those two had a habit of crossing paths on the regular. It could be said she did not think twice about which way to go. In top of that, having a captain whose head was wanted for a few hundred million Berry, this you could not spit on! The infamous Eustass Kid was definitely more interesting than this Surgeon in her opinion, but she could not deny he had been quite generous helping her. Even if she still had sort of a respect for him, his sense of humor was truly displeasing her. Recently, as she had almost gone overboard in the middle of Calm Belt, he politely indicated to her that there were simpler ways to leave him than this one. Only remembering this, Bubble groaned in disbelief and weakly punched the closest wall. I
Her shoulder-length bright pink hair were bouncing around her face. Her almond shaped eyes, amber colored lit up in irritation. She was wearing a black shirt, slightly too big for her as it was Shachi's, and a jean distressed by the salt in the air. Her small healed ranger boots were resonating to her dismay throughout the corridors of the submarine: impossible to keep a low profile, she should change those.
She took a look around her and a grin froze on her face. She did not recognize that junction in the passageways. A small metal signboard plastered on the wall indicated D-3. Deck 3? She had never been there before since it was the lowest deck and never needed to explore further than her bed ans the kitchen. She must have had climbed down the stairs without minding it while cursing her captain. That was on him! But the anger of Bubble only doubled when she pictured his amused smile when hearing about her getting lost again, because even if she had been here for three months, she never succeeded to draw a mental map of the place. She thus decided to follow the tiny white arrows painted above the signs. After a minute, an exit door greeted her and the woman remembered they were currently below the surface. Her yelling resonated throughout the whole deck.
On the B deck, that could be assimilated as the main deck, the captain Trafalgar Law was calmly studying on the kitchen table, Bepo begging him to be fed. Shachi entered and informed his superior that Bubble was nowhere to be found for dinner to come. Law looked up from his book, closed it and smiled in a way that would have driven the lady mad.
_ Lost again? We ought to give her a map of the submarine…
_ Ma'be yeah..
_Well, Law sighted, Let's head on the adventure of finding back Miss Bubby-the-lost.
« Bubby » was the nickname assigned to Bubble from her first day aboard, nickname she disliked in the uppermost way. Penguin opted for "Kyandi" due to her hair color reminding him of his childhood candies. For her part, Kyandi was still strolling around below their deck. She was now in the C deck which was more familiar as the personal cabins were there
.
_ What are we gonna do with her if she gets lost all the time capt'ain? asked Bepo
_Lock her up definitely to avoid her disappearing every time she throws a tantrum.
_...
_ I am kidding you guys…
_ Yeah...maybe yes..
They were about to arrive to a crossing when a tart stain stormed out right in front their eyes. The stain stopped and turned its head towards them, surprised to find them here.
_ What are you doing here? she asked, actually genuinely surprised.
_ Oh the irony...We wanted to know if you you had not gotten stuck in the cold room, calmly answered Law.
A sparkle of worry passed through Bubble's eyes.
_A…cold room? Why? What for? Don't tell me that there are…"people"…in there…?
Law did not refute it, which dissuaded Bubble to continue in that way.
_ Here are the private cabins, informed Law while approaching.
_ Wrong! I know the cabin hallway and this one is not part of it, she replied, almost proud of recalling that detail.
He seemed both amused and bored having to enlighten this detail that was obvious to the other crew members, which were indeed smirking behind. He slightly bent over her, his smile still intact.
_ I meant that the cabin door you were about to rush in was..well mine..
_ Eee…
Bubble seamed chocked by the announcement. It was true she never gave interest in her captain private quarters location since she was always going to bed later than him; she enjoyed staying up late to play cards with Penguin and Shachi. A slight heat wave took her. Penguin stepped aside and added with a smile of hope that his own quarters was in the same corridor if she ever need to visit.
_No thank you! Mine suits me fine! objected the young woman.
The rest of the cabins were indeed on the same deck but in the corridor crossing this one, which she missed. Bepo's stomach manifested itself, breaking the silence about to settle.
_ Bubby, I want pancakes…whined Bepo
_ If you wish, she nodded, happy about the diversion offered. Penguin, will you help?
_ No worries Bubby!
_ And please stop calling me that! My name is Bubble. BU-BBLE! she swore for the umpteenth time on the matter for the last three months.
She went ahead, followed by the rest of the group, happy to close the vagrancy matter, before again standing confused at the next crossing.
_Lost Miss Bubby? questioned Law whose smirk had not vanished.
_ Oh for hell sake, shush it Traffy!
Law tensed at that nickname given beforehand by the Straw Hat captain, Luffy, during their last encounter, and that the young woman seemed to have no remorse using from time to time as a provocation. In top of this, Law did not appreciated her consistent lack of manners, which he would not forget to point out.
_ If I were you, I would demonstrate a tad more respect towards your superiors or the cold room could become yours entirely Miss.
She shivered hearing the threat; she was rebellious but not dumb. She ended up following them in silence so as not to get lost or threatened again. Since she had been included in the Heart Pirates crew, she had quickly gotten into the circle of the main lieutenants of Trafalgar Law. Not necessarily because she was better than the other men aboard or because her lady status helped (although sometimes it played in her favor), but mostly due to the fact that her presence was not settled in stone. It was thus necessary to meet up to keep her updated of the ways of the outside world and how she could be of help aboard. The ship was not a holiday center and despite her intentions to leave at some point, it was out of question for her to be treated as a passenger, she had to behave like one of them.
In the kitchen, Penguin was busy preparing more pancake dough while Bubble was making it bounce in the pan. Penguin was the one with who she had the more affinities with, not counting Bepo, watching the food flying up with a dreamy look. Between cooks, the mood was set. One of her main task since joining the crew was giving a hand to Penguin in the kitchen, especially concerning desserts. The giant bear had an easy time getting used to her presence as he would gladly devour tons of pastries made in her free time. Dinner time was set and the smell of good mood was floating in deck B.
In the average size cafeteria, men of the first watch were enjoying their break before heading back. The meal elapsed quite calmly, sometimes punctuated by comments from a man to another. Law, as usual, showed a quiet attitude and even talked nicely to the new recruit. Once his plate was emptied down to the last pinch of salt, he stood up, apologizing about his on-going researches and the well needed planing for the next port of call. Dessert got swallowed quickly, Bubble even had to fight off Bepo to be able to taste her own food before he'd had gotten it all. Once everyone was done, Bubble set the cleaning station up and those not taken by the cleaning duty got back to their occupations. When all done, she helped the other men to tidy it all up and went to the counter on the side. She picked up a plate covered by a tissue until then and headed out.
Per a certain miracle, she found her way back to the C deck despite the mid-darkness. Standing in front of the door she almost burst through this late afternoon, a thin ray of light was filtrating under the thick metal door. Bubble was not feeling angry towards the man behind it, almost in a charitable mood. And if there was something that she disliked particularly was someone not participating in the dessert time when organized, especially when she had contributed to it. Hesitating at first, she finally firmly knocked twice. A voice invited her in, she obeyed.
The cabin was rather spacious, a bed set in the corner of it alongside a wooden library, surely filled with medicine books and disgusting details about surgery well needed to the man sitting at his desk. His hat hanging to the desk lamp spreading a soft warm light, charts and tons of papers were surrounding the man looking at her with a slight surprise look. That woman and her plate of pancakes looked as at ease as a lamb outside its pasture, despite the attempt at confidence in her eyes.
_What is it? asked Law without mockery this time
Before he had turned towards her, she caught up his seemingly upset facial expression and thus decided to play the polite card.
_There were some pancakes left. Since I hate dessert leftovers I figured that…well, I would bring you out some, you were gone then.
For once she had been respectful and it payed: a sincere smile slightly bent her grumpy captain's mouth.
_ Are you trying to be forgiven for something? The worries you are causing to us every time you wander inside this place without a care in the world for directions maybe? he suggested standing up from his chair.
_ I don't cause worries come on ! objected Bubble, offended to be considered a burden by the powerful man.
He grabbed the plate, his ashy eyes still anchored to the vivacious lady's stare. She felt that his fingers were quite cold on her own skin after the warmth of the plate.
_ Oh yeah you are causing worries, he sighed in a way suggesting she was clueless about more than she wished to realize.
Bubble was surprised of this change of behavior from him, but didn't change a thing in hers.
_ Well since I am burdening you I guess I'll leave!
She left him the plate in the hands and headed back to the passageway. Before she could turn around she heard:
_ Close the door and don't get lost, I won't go looking for you again at night.
She slammed the door, in a manner that exceeded her intentions and rushed away before her captain could catch her in case of following anger. She walked five minutes in the passageways before finding back her room. Her clothes taken off and folded, Bubble laid into her bed with delight. She was not wearing the famous white suit known for the crew, both for she didn't care for it nor they had the materials required to sew a new one. Her cabin was smaller than most but the simplicity of just a bed and a nightstand suited her hardiness. Through her porthole, time was often lost in between the string of thoughts linking her amber gaze to the cerulean depths. It helped soothing her disappointment. As the sleepiness overpowered her will she started remembering the time she almost joined the crew of another supernova, Captain Eustass Kid…
She had just arrived on an East Blue Island with no one to guide her. She thus had strolled around in the tourists packed up streets. Her long kitchen knife was hidden under a flap of her loose skirt, strapped against her right-hand-side quad, ready to draw it anytime needed. The rumor had it that two supernovas would had been seen on this island a few days ago. She had set aside anything concerning the identity of the first pirate, nor did she fondly cared about it either since the second pirate was no other man than Eustass Kid. His famous temper was such a match to hers in her opinion, and could not wait to encounter him in order to ask him to be enrolled in his crew and support his destructive initiatives.
As she was sitting in one of the many bars of the neighborhood, sipping her lemonade with delight, a random man that had just entered the place ordered her to move away from her counter stool for him to sit there. He had been annoying multiple table beforehand and seamed fond of bragging about sad little fusses of confrontations. She asked with an insensitive tone why she would ever have to obey such a random order from a rude stranger. The man, quite confident, pulled then a gun out of his side belt and repeated his order before smirking, saying a bullet in her head would suit her as well as her pretty pink hair. Without interrupting the sipping of her lemonade, she had slowly moved he hand to her thigh. The man believed it was to leave the stool as asked beforehand but, before he could process it all, the knife she owned had crossed the small room to nestle itself in the wood behind him, a slit in his cheek. She then had put the final word out with her straw in the mouth, explaining she hated to ruin the taste of her drinks with blood and sweat, so he better get off before she had put down her drink.
Heavily intimidated by the aura emanating from the young lady eyes, he had buzzed off threatening to take his revenge another time. Like they all did in these situations. Bubble, on her bored side, had stood up, glass still in her hand, walking to pull out her knife from the wooden planks. The situation had not created much panic since it seemed to be common ground around there, so people were quickly back to their business and discussion. One voice rose though, as bored as her, congratulating her for the agility trick. When she turned her head, she found out the owner sat at a corner table nearby. Bubble only took a fraction of second to recognize him. A long fur vest, red hair rising in rebellious strands. His eyes alert were detailing the woman and his great lips split open in a "anything but reassuring" type of smile. Eustass Captain Kid was just a breathing time from her. She turned to him, nervous but filled with excitement not to have to chase him across town, fixed her blade back in place before standing straight, the voice as cocky as she expected him to like.
_ You're the Captain Kid, right?
_ I see you are well informed. And quite prompt to draw your toy if needed apparently...
_I hate to be disturbed while relaxing, she nodded, reassured by the way things were going.
He briefly laughed but it was enough to caress her neck with a shiver. His voice impersonated danger and she was enjoying her own fear.
_ I gotta say, this joke of a bandit was seriously getting on my nerves. I would have gotten rid of him if you hadn't taken care of it. Well done I guess?
Being sort of thanked by the pirate you idolized was enough to confirm Bubble's felling about being part of this game. Her own bounty was merely of 50 000 000 Berry and though, she felt terribly fragile standing in front of the massive supernova slouching on his chair.
_If this could content you then I am more than happy.
He smirked even more at the obvious manufactured tone of submission she displayed for him.
_You have a bounty on your name I assume…?
_Y…yes…
_You look quite similar to that girl in the recent bounty book updates, 45 000 000 Berry for… what's her name again? Puddle?
Her jaw stiffened at the clear provocation but kept it together as it was not a time for screws up. He still had an idea of her face, comforting her in her plan to join him.
_50 000 000 Berry. And my name's Bubble not…Puddle. Got a raise recently but the editorial is as efficient at printing than the Marines at catching
you...
_You don't say…And what got you this lollipop of a reward?
A nervous laughter escaped her mouth as she tried to not let her wit reply to one of the most dangerous man at sea these days.
_ Some Marines were trying to capture a young pirate passing through. Pushed me in the way without minding. I refused to get treated like I were beneath them so I fought it. Sadly they were under qualified for living a day more.
Eustass chuckled at the answer. He was enjoying this interaction more than expected. This woman had murder wrapped around her wrist like a hair tie.
_ What about the other guy you saved?
_Oh, I killed him too.
This time Eustass Kid stopped and looked at her slightly confused.
_ I was about to let him go but he tried to attack back to rob me so I killed him. So sad he didn't think this through, dropped Bubble, not even amused by the end word of the story. But at the same time dumb lads don't deserve to sail if they can't even save their life on land, right?
The supernova was wondering if she was serious of just trying to impress him by her attitude resembling quite his own. Before he could answer this mental question, she took a step forward and struck the table board, blade down the wood, a few finches away from the beer mug he was holding.
_ I wish to join your crew. I am ready for anything that could be asked from me... Captain.
Eustass Kid massively disliked her attempt to show off by risking his fingertips and took his time to glare at her in a way that made her step back with hesitation. She had a quite common stature but muscles distinguishable under her palish skin. Reflexes not to be proven again and some sparkle of cruelty in her amber eyes. Her carnal layer was not displeasing to his taste but it was clear to him she did not carry the stature nor the experience needed to be under his commandment. And he had no time to spare with someone that would get themselves killed or that he would have to kill himself if proven needed. What a waste it would be to throw overboard someone with her…potential. Without breaking eye contact with the woman who was clearly realizing her mistake, he wrapped his hand around the handle of the sad attempt of a ninjato and stood up.
_ You are not really convincing. Something tells me you can do better. I won't surround myself with pathetic wannabe bad guys, you should know that since you wanna join us, right?
Bubble Piccadilly was about to say something but before she could pen her mouth, he took out the blade of the wood as effortlessly as if it had been a toothpick, and threw it at her feet with disdain.
_Come back with a bounty as interesting as your arrogance, so in about…15 000 000 Berry!
And he left laughing his chest out. Bubble felt as she had received a slap across the face. Never she had imagined such a cold refusal. In a way he was only requesting a higher bounty on her name before considering it but, in her simple angry mind, she felt as if all the efforts put together before were for nothing. She stayed there, arms stiffed against her torso, fists curled as they processed the frustration. For a very long while she had sailed with any group that needed people, got experiences from left to right with so many people that were either dead or too scared to risk it. None seemed cruel enough to bring her the adrenaline a life of danger would carry. After a second, she snapped out of it and grabbed her knife back before storming out of the place, her jaw clenched and every sense alert. Not worth enough? What a joke, she would prove him wrong, as naive she felt thinking it!
For two hours she spied for the slightest sign of a bustle, yelling, anything indicating a fight, but nothing happened. After haunting the docks like a lost sailor, Bubble judged smart to walk back in the city streets where the turmoil usually simmered. Since she had left for the sea, managing her life alone was rather easy, but she had to face the fact that to enter Grand Line she would have no other choice than to settle for some other pirate crew since her ideal One Piece hunter had so violently laughed in her face.
Once again mixed with the population, she left her eyes wander on the plethora of stalls bordering the street. She could almost have merged with the locals vivid clothing if hers were not set for a warmer weather than the cloudy one here: a white cropped shirt stamped with a massive red circle in the back, black knee boots ideal for crouching and her hidden short-skirt perfect for running away from bad life choices, she was not dressed for gray skies. The other pieces of thick and long cut clothing she encountered were a mix of the most unlike color matches: moss green and bright orange, royal blue and lilac, blood red and maroon… She sighed and hoped to get away soon. At the end of the day, there was nothing else new she was able to do if not keeping an ear out about other pirates crews in port of call. Exhausted, she went back to her hotel when she could stare at the horizon mocking her from its infinite presence.
_ One day I'll be free from the boredom of this life and sail with the strongest to be part of history…
After two days of idleness, an old store owner woman with hair covered in beads and pearls indicated her that she had heard a rumor concerning three new pirates crews arriving to town but it did not seem as they were recruiting new members, at least from her source. Bubble had thanked her and decided to head back to the bars in the main street when she had been the first day. It was more likely to meet thirsty men. It was also, from what she had seen, the least patronized by civilians.
She pushed the swing doors and sat on a cushioned bench, not far from the counter. This way her glance could cover the whole room without being openly noticed. Drinking her usual grenadine without much interest in the general hubbub seemingly peaceful. The barmen had raised an eyebrow hearing her order, pinkish and sweet, it changed from the usual beer, whiskeys and rums. Ever since she was a child, a sweet tooth never disappeared and she enjoyed candies and any sugar derivative food.
_ I can't believe so many pirates are told to be around and nothing happens around here. And this Kid is not even creating any drama, what a bore!
As she was pending on ordering a second glass, a group sitting across from her on the far end of the bar rose up and her eye got caught by a golden shine. She scanned the group heading towards the counter. The shine that caught her eyes was in fact small rings hanging from what appeared to be the leader's ear. Short raven hair hidden under a mottled white hat, a black and yellow sweatshirt displaying a creepy smiling Jolly Roger: in short, someone having a hard time passing under the radar. What had really gotten the attention of the men around were the ones accompanying him: a polar bear in bright orange suit, and two tall men wearing similar outfits but in white. The same Jolly Roger was drawn somewhere on them. Not hard for the woman to puzzle it together and figure out they were pirates, the face of their leader even looking familiar to her. This one addressed the barman while his eyes wandered aimlessly on the wall full of wanted posters. They ended up leaving the bar without any fuss. Not having anything better to do, Bubble decided to follow them discreetly so as to get more information of pirate crews. It had been a few minutes of shadowing them when she hid behind a barrel as they were hollered by some lowlife street thugs.
_ Having a little stroll, Trafalgar Law?
Trafalgar Law! No way she had been spying on a pirate with 200.000.000 Berry bounty?! His face suddenly popped into her head from a wanted poster seen the other day in the same bar they had left. He must have been this other big one fish apart from Eustass Kid. Her interest doubled concerning this stranger now supernova who was raising his hand towards the group closing distance drawing a sword.
_ Don't play with this, you most likely will injure yourself, warned the pirate. I may be a medic I won't even care disinfecting your wounds.
_ If I were you, I'd worry for myself. Catching you guys will be my reward for some cuts, replied the thug all smiles.
Trafalgar Law rose an eyebrow, amused and muttered.
_ Oh, really? How brave…
The gang jumped on the four pirates without a thought, attacking shame every crew member. Him had stayed still. Bubble believed she heard a slight word escaping his lips.
_ Room...
To the general surprise, a blue dome spread around him, encapsulating only the crooks and him, his companion having jumped away swiftly from the dome.
_ Quite pretty, smirked the main thug. But I won't stay still 'till you cut me in pieces.
_ So sad you're slow as a rock. Shambles!
Without a second of hesitation, he had already detached his torso and had it replaced by the head of one of his mate. Every was upside down. Pieces of bodies were flying around like hungry seagulls around a fishing ship, a giant blender whose blades were the hand swirls of the renown surgeon. Bubble had already heard about his scary Devil Fruit power but never thought it could be so…immediate! As she was following a hand clenching flying away she realized one guy had been smart enough to stay far from battle and was bypassing the battle and heading behind Trafalgar Law's mates without anyone noticing it yet. Should she say something? It was none of her business, those guys surely knew how to deal with that right? If she said something they would know she was following them since no one dared to go out after the altercation. Getting chopped today was not part of the plan. The man arrived out of their vision and she could see him preparing to attack. They felt him right? He slowly moved away from the wall he was slouching against. Maybe they were gonna kill him at the last moment to assert dominance? He seemed to stare at the polar bear slightly closer from him than the two others, all of them focused on their captain in the bubble.
_ C'mon guys, turn around… she muttered between her teeth.
She could see him getting ready to jump out, his sword against his flank. He rose it above his head and the sun caught the blade it its rays, shinning as he finally ran towards them.
_ Well, fuck.
As the Heart Pirates realized too late the sword slicing the air, she lunged out in plain sight.
