Chapter Twenty-One: The Sports Festival Finale
"Looks like our final match is set. Izuku Midoriya versus Katsuki Bakugou!" Present Mic announced. Izuku had been waiting in his assigned waiting room, meditating while in his 5% state of One For All. Him using more has finally caught up with him, and he was feeling the muscle strain start to worsen. Luckily for him, all he needed was some time to detox, and meditate to relax.
Or at least he thought he'd be lucky.
Katsuki Bakugou suddenly kicked open the door to the waiting room and stepped inside, startling the young greenette who was already present. The boy looked around the room before locking eyes with Izuku Midoriya.
"The hell are you doing here nerd!?" The boy grumbled, glaring at the greenette. Izuku, who was still coming down from his startled state, continued to stare at the boy in confusion. What was Bakugou doing here in his waiting room? "Ah crap, is this the wrong room!?"
Izuku sighs and looks away from the blonde. He didn't have time for distractions, he needed to focus on relaxing his muscles so that he was ready for the next fight. A vein pops on Bakugou's head as Izuku ignores him, what did he think he was better than him or something!?
"Hey, I get that I walked into the wrong room…" Bakugou started, as he loomed over the table the boy was seated at. Bakugou then raised an arm into the air, "But giving me the cold shoulder? That's not gonna slide, Deku, what's the big idea!?"
Bakugou slammed a hand down onto the table, causing an explosion right on the surface. Izuku flinched and his eyes opened once more from his meditation. Bakugou and Izuku stared each other down, Izuku now just as tense as ever as his old scars from Bakugou began to feel like they were fresh wounds. The fear that he felt for all those quirkless years resurfacing, and he was beginning to doubt himself.
"The 'big idea' is that you're in the wrong room, Kacchan. I-I'm trying to prepare for the match, could you not disturb me right now?" Izuku questioned, trying his best to hold his ground. Without Kyouka around he was feeling like "shrinking". Metaphorically of course, but his confidence was certainly worsening the more he sat around Bakugou.
Bakugou grit his teeth, and then suddenly kicked the table aside. "WHO THE HELL CARES!?" He'd shout, scowling at the greenette who was getting more and more startled at the boy's outburst. "You think you're better than me, don't you!? You've always been like this, and I hate you for it!"
Izuku gave the boy a confused expression; when had he ever implied that he was better than Bakugou? There was not once where Izuku didn't look up to the blonde and admire him for the hero he could be. But now he was saying that Izuku was looking down on him now?
"You think you're so high and mighty now that you've got a quirk!? I'll show you, Deku. I'll kill you 100 times over if I have to." The volume of his voice dropped. He was no longer shouting but his glare sent all the seriousness in the world. Bakugou meant business, and that just meant Izuku was going to have to deliver whatever expectations Bakugou had for him.
Before Izuku could even say anything in his defense, Bakugou simply left. Not another word, nor another outburst. He just left silently, and closed the door, not even bothering to slam it. Bakugou was serious about this, this only meant one thing for the poor greenette.
He needed to put on his game face.
"AT LAST WE'VE ARRIVED!" Present Mic announces, drawing the attention of the crowd. "THE BEST OF THE BEST AMONG UA'S FIRST YEARS WILL BE DECIDED! IT'S THE FINAL MATCH, IZUKU MIDORIYA VERSUS KATSUKI BAKUGOU!"
Izuku and Bakugou stood in the arena staring each other down once more. Bakugou was unusually quiet, there was no expression on his face other than a deep scowl directed at Izuku. Izuku however was resolving himself for this battle, trying to keep himself together and calm himself. He was successful in calming his nerves, but the tense aura of the air proved to cause him some distress.
Bakugou was going to be a tough opponent, and Izuku wasn't sure if he could win against strength like his with his current abilities. Izuku then glanced up at the stands to where he and Kyouka had sat together not too long ago, the empty seats had filled him with dread. How could he think he could win this? This was Bakugou he was talking about, he was always better than him, he just got lucky when facing him in the battle training.
That's all it was. Pure luck. That's all he'd ever had. He met All Might by pure chance. Became friends with Kyouka out of pure luck, she only talked to him out of pity… He only got into UA's hero course because of sheer luck. He wasn't meant to be a hero, he just got lucky…
"What's wrong with you, nerd? Are you scared? Good." Bakugou said, snapping the boy out of his self-doubt induced trance. Izuku snapped his attention back to the blonde who was glaring at him. "Thought you were gonna win this for that dumb girlfriend of yours, but I guess you really are as useless as ever!"
Izuku exhaled through his nose and slapped his cheeks. He had nearly forgotten why he was doing this. What he was striving for in his endeavors and in the victory he was craving. He needed to win this, he had no time to be feeling sorry for himself; no time to be questioning his worth. He had one goal in mind, and that was winning this for Kyouka.
"No worries, Kacchan... I'll be sure to beat you!" Izuku stated, turning his attention back to Bakugou with a smirk. "Though you just made the same mistake that Shinsou and Iida did."
"Hah!? And what mistake is that!?" The blonde questions, crackling a few small explosions in his hands while scowling at the greenette before him. Izuku let One For All flow within him at 5% causing him to glow with green crackles of electricity to sprout from his body.
"You pressed the one button you shouldn't have." He stated. Bakugou began to feel an intense pressure exuding from the boy as his smile fell. The two were back to scowling at one another, and it was now time to begin the match.
Present Mic took a deep breath, and the audience went quiet. People braced themselves for what was about to transpire. Izuku and Bakugou got into their own separate stances, and finally Present Mic spoke.
"START!"
Bakugou fired off a massive explosion at Izuku right off the bat, which he quickly rolled to the right to avoid. It seems Bakugou was going to try and keep his distance from Izuku; it was understandable. Izuku is a close range fighter, if he lets him get too close then it might be game over.
Izuku leapt into the air, right above Bakugou, and attempted to administer an axe kick straight to the boy's head. Unfortunately he barely missed the blonde's head, but that wasn't the end of the greenette's assault. Bakugou, on instinct, had tried to go for a right hook without realizing he was making that same fatal flaw from the battle training, and Izuku grabbed his arm and swung him around and attempted to throw him out of the ring.
The blonde growled as he was tossed aside, and used his explosions to change trajectory and propel himself right back to Izuku. As Bakugou charged toward Izuku, Izuku ran towards his childhood bully preparing for a head-on assault it seemed. As the two finally got close enough, Izuku quickly slid underneath Bakugou's flight course and used both of his feet to kick the blonde higher into the air.
The crowd erupted in awe at the fight, and how Izuku and Bakugou were going at this so intensively. Aizawa and Present Mic in the stands watched on as their students battled, analyzing their fight and silently being proud of their progress thus far.
"Midoriya's really been holding his own lately. Seems like only yesterday he was breaking his entire arm." Aizawa commented in the stands as Bakugou flew straight up into the air right past them. Present Mic hummed, and nodded in agreement.
"That's right, Eraserhead! But Bakugou's determination isn't going to let him be defeated so easily! I mean just look at him up there!" Present Mic stated, pointing up in the air to see Bakugou begin to spark explosions around him. The boy then began to spin as he headed closer and closer to the ground, a cloud of smoke and explosions spinning right around him.
'That's..!' Izuku thought, trailing off as he needed to ready himself for this attack. If it were to connect the stadium would be destroyed and he'd have no footing. It would be game over. On the other hand, if he were to intercept it at just the right moment he could stop Bakugou and possibly win this, with heavy injuries to his arms.
Either way Izuku could be fucked, but he only had one option. But could he pull this off? Statistically, no, he couldn't. This was a dumb plan, but it was all that he had in mind. There was no way this was going to work! Why did he even think he could win against Bakugou!?
"IZUKU! KICK HIS ASS!"
A voice called his name. A familiar voice that he longed to hear. He turned his head to the stands, where 1-A would be seated and there he saw her. It was Kyouka, she was awake and okay! Granted, she was bandaged up quite a bit, but she was okay nonetheless! All the tenseness and doubt that he was feeling seemingly vanished into thin air, and Izuku resolved himself once more. He had to win, and he had a damn good shot at it.
"DETROIT..!" Izuku started, charging 100% of One For All Into his right arm. Bakugou's attack neared him, and the two prepared themselves for the impact that was about to absolutely obliterate them.
"HOWITZER..!" Bakugou announced, having a name for his move. Its sole purpose was to make the boy's impact as strong as a giant bullet. A human artillery shell. And it was headed straight for Izuku. It was at this moment that both boys stopped caring about their own personal feud, and only cared about victory.
"SMASH/IMPACT!"
The collision of the two's attacks caused a massive amount of smoke to fill the arena, and nothing could be seen from the spectators' stands. Kyouka had awoken in Recovery Girl's office not even five minutes ago, and wanted to rush her way to see the match. Izuku was fighting Bakugou and she didn't want to miss this! Only to find to her horror that Izuku was about to get aerial striked by Bakugou.
Now she laid in anticipation as no one in the crowd could see what had transpired after their attacks collided. What if Izuku lost? What if Bakugou lost? What if the two of them knocked each other out? What if neither of them were done yet!?
'Please, Izu..!' Kyouka pleaded as the smoke had begun to clear. Soon the smoke was cleared, and the entire arena had massive cracks throughout it. There was rubble everywhere, but the most horrifying thing about this whole situation was the fact that both Bakugou and Izuku were on the ground of the arena and panting due to exhaustion.
The two boys slowly started to rise to their feet, Izuku with his arms broken, and Bakugou with his arms aching like crazy due to overuse of his quirk. Soon enough both boys were standing on their two feet once more, the smoke in the area causing them to have trouble breathing.
"You really... are amazing… Kacchan…" Izuku stated through labored breaths. Bakugou clicked his teeth and scowled at the greenette before him.
"Always have been… Always will be." He'd reply, readying both of his arms to his side. Bakugou was going to prepare for another big attack, there was no use in trying to waste time with trading blows. That's not how he fought, going all out was all he knew how to do.
"I'd expect… Nothing less." Izuku raised both his arms. Broken or not, he'd need to match blows with Bakugou if he wanted to win this. No, he needed to win this. He'd said this many times before, but this was going to be big. Izuku turned his head to the stands, first locking eyes with All Might.
His mentor stared at him with a worried expression, he couldn't bear to see his student go through with this, but if this is what it took for Izuku to tell the world that he was here, then he could do nothing but support him through everything. It was necessary to nurture the boy so that he could grow exponentially. Izuku smiled and nodded to All Might, silently letting the man know that he had this.
Izuku then searched the area for Kyouka. She was being hounded by Recovery Girl for leaving her office so quickly, and Kyouka was just trying to stay put and watch the match finish. She then locked eyes with Izuku who was smiling at her. He was now ready. This was going to decide it all.
The two boys then fixed their gazes back unto one another, and charged headfirst into the fray. Both Izuku and Bakugou knew what they were doing was moronic, but they didn't care. All they cared about was the victory.
Cementoss split the two's attacks apart with giant walls of concrete, but they were no match for the power that they two were exuding. The audience was blasted back from the pressure of the impacts, and concrete had begun to fly all around the field. Smoke consumed the massive stadium once more, and while everyone in the audience was regaining their composure, one lone boy stood.
"Katsuki Bakugou is out of bounds! So…" Midnight announced, raising her arm into the air. "IZUKU MIDORIYA IS THE WINNER!"
Izuku stood in the arena, his arms dangling and broken, with one worse off than the other. He fwipped his head up into the sky and took a minute to straighten his breathing. Izuku then took a deep breath and let out a loud victory cry. The crowd joined in immediately, with shouts of approval and congratulations alike. He had done it; he won the Sports Festival.
"AND THAT CONCLUDES OUR CONTEST! THE FIRST-YEAR WINNER OF UA'S SPORTS FESTIVAL IS IZUKU MIDORIYA OF CLASS A!"
Izuku and Bakugou had to be treated for their injuries before they could hold the award ceremony. Izuku had laid in Recovery Girl's office since she had just finished surgery on his arms.
"You're going to have some pretty nasty scars, Midoriya. You really need to get a handle on that quirk of yours, I'm not going to keep healing you like this!" She scolded, holding herself back from striking the greenette with her cane. Kyouka had sat beside him as soon as she was allowed, the two of them were beaten up, but she was feeling nothing but pure joy from Izuku's victory. He had won, just like he said he would.
"S-Sorry, Recovery Girl…" He'd apologize, before turning to Kyouka. The two of them were nothing but pure smiles, however with his arm in a cast once more it seemed as though fate didn't like letting the two of them have a moment without a few sacrifices. "I won…"
Kyouka giggled softly, "You won… You really won." She'd reply softly. Recovery Girl rolled her eyes and smiled, walking out of the room. These two lovebirds were always going to be like this in her office, weren't they?
"I think now I owe you something." He'd say, turning so that his whole body was facing the girl. The two of them blushed, but Izuku was on a new high of confidence and nothing was going to stop him. He took a deep breath before he spoke, choosing his next words carefully. "You wanna know what I would keep telling myself to help keep me going..?"
Kyouka nodded slowly, intrigued on what could've been running through his head at the time. Especially during that fight with Bakugou; like what were you thinking, moron!?
"I kept saying, 'For Kyouka,' over and over in my head." He admitted, bashfully. He then locked eyes with the girl as a smile graced his lips. "I kept pushing myself to keep going for you, Kyo… A-And I did it! I fulfilled my promise to you, and All Might! And now, if y-you're still okay with me… W-Would you be my girlfriend?"
Tears had begun to well up in the girl's eyes, and a shaky smile had graced her lips as she tried to contain her excitement, but it was of no use. The two of them would finally be together officially! She couldn't hold back the smile from widening before she wrapped her arms around the boy's neck, leaping out of her chair.
"Yes..! Of course, Izu!" She exclaimed, letting the tears of joy fall. Izuku wrapped his good arm around her, and placed a small peck on her cheek. "I can't believe I had to wait for this…"
"Y-Yeah… Sorry, I just wanted this to be just as special as you are to me." He'd mumbled, embracing the girl tighter. Kyouka did the same, yet shook her head.
"No, Izu… This was perfect. I still can't believe you actually won! I told you you were always going to make a great hero!" Kyouka said, pulling away slightly to face the boy. Izuku smiled and pressed his forehead against hers, sighing blissfully.
"Thank you for giving me strength when I needed it." Izuku replied, before leaning in and capturing the girl's lips with his own. The kiss was short and gentle, but conveyed the boy's feelings perfectly. Kyouka smiled into the kiss before Izuku pulled away and brought himself to his feet.
"Let's go, Kyo. I've got a medal to receive."
"Now, let's move on to the awards ceremony!" Midnight exclaimed, holding a hand out to the three that made it to the top spots. Izuku on the 1st place podium, Bakugou on the second angrily crossing his arms, and Tsuyu on the third, with a finger on her chin. "Actually, in third place we have both Tsuyu and Iida, but Iida was forced to leave early due to a family emergency."
'I hope his brother's alright…' Izuku thought as he reminisced about Iida telling him and Kyouka that his brother was attacked by a villain. It truly would be a shame if Iida's role model was out for the count.
"Now for the medals! Presenting them this year is… Well, you all already know!" Midnight exclaimed as a man standing at the top of the stadium came leaping down. "He's everyone's favorite hero.. All Might!"
"I AM.." All Might exclaimed before he reached the field. "HERE WITH THE MEDALS!"
First the man walked over to Tsuyu Asui, and placed the bronze medal around her neck. "Congratulations, Asui. You're quite strong for making it this far!"
Tsuyu smiled at the praise, and let out a small ribbit. Never in her life did she think she'd be praised like this by the number one hero!
"Bakugou, kid. Congratulations, you've really gone above and beyond and showed your strength and determination to the world. I'm proud of you!" All Might said, stringing the silver medal around Bakugous neck. The boy grunted in response.
"Yeah, yeah... I'll be sure to win this thing next year, don't you worry! I'll kill the competition, y'hear me!?" Bakugou declared, causing All Might's smile to widen. The boy had guts and never let anything stop him. It truly was quite admirable.
"I like your spirit, kid!" All Might exclaimed, before turning to his student. His successor. The pride that All Might was feeling in this one moment caused the man's face to hurt at how much he was smiling. It took a lot to contain everything he wanted to say to the boy; he needed to keep this short. "Young Midoriya. You've gone above and beyond and shattered all of the audience's expectations of you. You placed first, even through your own sacrifice so that you could tell the world your own message. Would you like to vocalize that message?"
All Might held the microphone out to Izuku, he wasn't told about being allowed to say anything, but it seemed like this was planned by the staff. He gulped and took a deep breath before taking the microphone.
"O-Once again everyone…" Izuku started, looking up to the crowd. "My name is Izuku Midoriya, and like All Might said I have a message to share with the world. I was inspired time and time again by All Might and everyone else on this field watching them compete. But now I only have one thing to say…"
"MY NAME IS IZUKU MIDORIYA, AND I AM HERE!"
AND HERE'S THE FINALE OF THE SPORTS FESTIVAL, Chapter 21!
Sorry this took so long to come out, I've had to move back home from university so that took up a lot of my time... Though as many of you know I did try to get a few chapters out for some of my smaller fics, that I collabed on with others.
This chapter Izuku defeats all odds and makes his way into the final match, coming out on top! And he did it all for Kyouka!
There's less interaction between the two here unfortunately, but seeing as the students get a two day break after the Sports Festival, expect some fluff chapters before we get right back into it!
Izuku and Kyouka have finally become official, yet no one knows aside from them... Will issues arise because of it?
Find out later! I'll see you guys then!
