Chapter 1
Amity was laying in bed, enjoying a nice read before she went to sleep for the night.
Things were going well for her since she and Luz won the duel against her mother. Her parents weren't interfering with her love life at all, and were even beginning to warm up to the idea of Amity dating the human… though they still hated Luz. Not to mention her father helping them with building a new portal door.
"I wonder how the attempt went earlier… I hope it went well…" Amity said, remembering that Luz was trying to return home today.
The truth was, Amity wanted nothing more but to be there with Luz when she built the door but…
"I still can't believe that Emira got stood up!" Luz shouted.
"Yeah, she's really not taking it well…" Amity said as she hopped onto Ghost. "Are you sure it's alright for me to leave? I mean, this is so important to you!"
"Yeah it is, but your siblings are important to you too." Luz reasoned. "Don't worry, if all goes well, we'll be able to go and see my Mom tomorrow!"
"And if it doesn't?" Amity asked, face full of concern.
"Then we'll figure it out!" Luz said. "Even if I get stuck in the human realm somehow, I know it won't be for long, cause you guys will stop at nothing to get a portal door working, with or without me!"
"… Alright." Amity said. "Promise me you'll be careful though? I don't want to lose you."
"I will. See you soon mi amor." Luz said with a hug.
"Talk tomorrow?" Amity asked.
"Of course!"
With a smile, Amity took off, beginning the journey home.
Deciding that she would ask Luz about what happened in the morning, Amity turned off her light and decided to get some much needed rest.
Tap Tap Tap
Until the sound of something tapping against her window woke her up a coupe of hours later.
Getting up groggily, Amity looked over to the window, and saw something surprising to say the least.
"Owlbert?" Amity asked.
Walking over and opening the window, the tiny owl hopped inside with a note clutched in it's claw.
Taking the note from the palismen, Amity unrolled it and began reading.
"Come outside please?
-Luz"
If seeing Owlbert outside her window past midnight didn't catch her off guard, the note absolutely did.
At that moment, several questions went through Amity's mind.
'Is Luz alright?'
'Did something happen with the portal?'
'Is this a thing that girlfriends just do?'
'Is she going to laugh at my bedhead?!'
Deciding that the answers to those questions could wait until she got outside, Amity, very careful as to not wake everyone up, snuck downstairs and outside.
When she walked through the doors, she saw Luz outside, wearing the same outfit she wore when she was sick, and dealing with a bad bedhead of her own.
'She looks fine… maybe I was just overreacting…'
When she turned around however, Amity knew something was terribly wrong.
Luz was in tears.
Before Amity could say anything, Luz sprinted over and practically tackled Amity into a hug.
Then, she just cried. Openly sobbing into Amity's arms as the witch tried to comfort her.
Before long, her sobbing proved to be too loud as the front door opened, revealing Odalia, clearly wondering what was going on.
"Amity Blight, just what is…"
Then, she saw the state that Luz was in.
"… Bring her inside, I'll brew some tea."
"Right, thanks Mom…" Amity said. "Come on Luz."
Amity then led the human inside, and sat her down on the couch.
Before long, all the commotion seemed to begin waking everyone up.
The first was Ghost, who wandered into the room and hopped onto Luz's lap.
"Sorry for waking you gatita…" Luz whispered.
Next, Ed and Em walked in, though Amity could of sworn she heard her father talking to her mother shortly beforehand.
"What's going on?" Em asked, taking a seat next to Luz.
"I don't know, she just showed up like this…" Amity said.
"You need anything?" Ed asked quietly, being surprisingly considerate towards Luz's current state.
"Just Amity…" Luz said, looking towards the floor.
"Ok, call us if you need us."
The twins then left, though apprehensively.
"Glad to see that they are being considerate… for once…" Amity said before turning her attention back to comforting Luz.
"Mmmhmm…"
Before long, Odalia came into the room with a cup of hot tea.
"Here, this might help calm her down a bit." Odalia said as she put the cup on the table.
"Thanks Mom… I mean it…" Amity said.
"I may not like her, but I know a child in need when I see one… I'm not completely cold-hearted you know." Odalia said as she left the room.
Amity smiled at this…
'Good to know'
After a bit, Luz finally calmed down enough to stop crying.
"So… you ready to tell me what's going on?" Amity asked.
"Y-yeah…" Luz said with a sniffle.
"Ok, so I'm guessing this has something to do with your attempt to make a portal door today?" Amity asked.
"Yeah… It worked… kind of…"
"Kind of?"
"I was able to see my mom again… but it was weird, and it didn't last." Luz explained. "Instead of the human realm, I think I went to some place… in between?"
"Really?"
"Yeah, there was this weird sludge everywhere, and floating cubes that when I looked into, I would just appear in reflections either here or the human realm." Luz explained.
"Wow…" Amity said. "Wait a minute…"
Earlier that day, she could of sworn she heard Luz's voice nearby, but when she looked, she saw nothing… it was really weird.
"Oh uh… I was testing it out, and I may of said your name, which made a cube appear before I pushed it back into the sludge." Luz explained, a bit red in the face.
"Ah, that explains it." Amity said. "Anyways, I'm guessing you used these cubes to talk to your mom?"
"Yeah…"
"Ok… so what happened?" Amity asked.
"Well…"
Luz told the whole story, every little detail about what happened in the human realm. About Vee, about her Mom, everything.
"Ok, so you saved this Vee girl's life… but that doesn't explain why you were so upset…" Amity said.
"Before I left… I had a chance to talk to my mom alone…" Luz said before tears started forming again. "She was so scared Amity… I… I've never seen her like that… and then… and then when I told her that I chose to stay here at first… she looked so hurt…"
"Oh…"
'That… was her fear during Grom…'
"Worst of all though, is when Eda and the others began pulling me back…" Luz said. "She… she made me promise to stay there when I got back."
"I see…" Amity said. "And… what is so bad about that?"
"I… I think she meant that she didn't want me to come back here ever again." Luz explained.
"W-what?!" Amity shouted. "Are you sure?"
"Mmmhmm…"
"But… that would mean…"
"Yeah… saying goodbye to everyone here…" Luz said. "I… I just don't know if I can do it… My life here in the Boiling Isles, while scary, is so much better than it was back home… I don't want to give it all up, but…"
"You want to be back with your mom…" Amity said. "So now, you have to choose between your family, or the life that you came to love…"
"And the people too…" Luz said, wrapping her hand around Amity's.
"Hey… look at me…"
Luz looked up and into Amity's eyes.
"It's like I said during the duel, my dream is to go to the human realm with you, and live there." Amity reminded her. "So, no matter what, I will always be a part of your life, ok?"
Luz smiled at this, before putting her head on Amity's shoulder. "Ok…"
"Now, of course… you want to be allowed to come back here, right?" Amity asked.
"Y-yeah, of course!" Luz said.
"Well, let's figure out a good way to convince her… I'm assuming you told her about all of us, right?" Amity asked.
Luz stayed silent at this.
"…Luz…"
"Hey, in my defense, a lot happened and I didn't have the time!" Luz said defensively.
Amity just rubbed the bridge of her nose.
"Ok, so, first thing we do is introduce everyone to her when you get back. If she see's that you've made some great friends… and got an awesome girlfriend… then maybe she'll be more willing!" Amity said.
"Yeah…" Luz said. "Though, I did kinda tell King that I told her about him…"
"So you lied."
"Yeah."
"Ok… wait, did you not tell Eda or the others about any of this?" Amity asked.
"Uh… no?"
"Luz, you have to tell them! What, did you think that they wouldn't notice you being super upset since you got back, or that you left in the middle of the night?!" Amity asked. "Hooty for sure noticed that you left Luz!"
"I know I know! I panicked I'm sorry!" Luz said, putting her hands up and tearing up again.
'Ok… cool it with the scolding, she needs comfort, not discipline.'
"Hey, it's alright. How's about this, I'll go back with you, and we'll talk to them together, ok?" Amity tried to reason.
"Y-yeah… I'd like that." Luz said.
Amity pulled Luz in for a hug before standing up.
"Ok, let me go gather some things, and we'll head over." Amity said before walking away.
When she turned the corner, she saw her family standing there.
"I guess I don't need to explain where I am going?"
"No… just don't do anything stupid please?" Odalia requested.
"Yeah, ok." Amity said before going upstairs.
Before long, the two were off into the night sky.
"… Why… Do I feel like we should do something to help?" Odalia asked.
"Maybe because we should…" Alador answered. "We agreed to support them in any way we could, remember?"
"Right, of course." Odalia said.
"Any ideas though? I mean… what CAN we do?" Em asked.
"… Well, I have an idea…" Alador said as he went towards his lab.
When the duo arrived at the Owl house, they were not at all surprised to see Eda sitting in a chair, waiting for them.
What did surprise them, was that King was also there, wide awake and not looking annoyed at being up this late.
"So, you finally ready to tell us what's been bothering you since you came back earlier?" Eda asked.
"You did notice, huh?" Luz asked.
"Luz, your emotions are like an open book." Eda explained. "It's not hard to figure out that you're upset about something, and then when Hooty saw you flying away on Owlbert in tears, well, that pretty much confirmed it."
King then walked up to Luz, who kneeled down and began hugging the demon.
"You're right… I'm sorry I made you guys worried." Luz said. "And yeah, I am ready to tell you guys…"
"Ok good… now, let's start with what really happened when you went through the portal." Eda said.
"Right… where do I begin…"
After a brief explanation, Eda was rubbing her temples.
"Seriously kid, did you really think we would be upset with you if you just told us this from the start?" Eda asked.
"A lot was going through her mind at the time, so give her some slack." Amity tried to reason.
"Yeah, I guess you're right…" Eda said. "Ok! All is forgiven!"
King just sat there and grumbled.
"All is forgiven, right?" Eda said sternly.
"Yeah yeah, all is forgiven." King groaned out.
"Good!" Eda said. "Now then, let's get you two some sleep! We got a big day tomorrow if we want to get a real working portal door! You staying the night Boots?"
"Yeah, if you don't mind."
"Sure, just no funny business you two." Eda said with a wink.
The two girls in question blushed.
"EDA!"
"Whoops, already falling asleep! Back to the nest I go, night now, BYEEEEEEEE!" Eda said as she went inside.
With King following close behind, the two girls were left there in shock.
"Um… hehehe… I'm sure she… uh…"
"I'll sleep on the couch, if you aren't comfortable sharing a room." Luz said.
"No no! We'll figure something out!" Amity said frantically. "Let's just get some sleep, ok?"
"Ok…"
And so, the two of them went inside, to get a good nights rest.
The next morning
"So you don't know what went wrong exactly?" Gus asked.
When Amity messaged Willow that she was going to be spending the day at the Owl House and that Luz probably needed her friends support right now, Willow, along with Gus, decided to go ahead and visit.
"No, all that we do know is that we have to wait for something…" Luz explained.
"And this something is…?" Willow asked.
"We need for the High-Atus comet to pass." Amity explained. "According to Philip's diary, the magic from the comet should allow the door to be more stable."
"Ok, so how long is that going to take?" Gus asked.
"Well, I think it passes in a couple of days actually." Eda said. "Lilith would probably know better though…"
"Ugh, seriously?! At this point, that might feel like months! Like, four to six, give or take…" Luz groaned out.
"Well, we're going to have to be patient!" Amity said. "Don't worry, you'll see your Mom again soon!"
"I just… I just wish I had another chance to talk to her…" Luz said, looking towards the ground.
"Well you just might!"
End of Chapter 1
Welcome to this story!
This is going to be a very short one. Only four chapters and an epilogue, and outside of this one, each chapter isn't going to be too long. Really, this story at first was JUST going to be this chapter, however I wanted to do a bit more to set up for something I have planned later for this series. It's gonna be great!
So yeah, there is in fact going to be a sequel to this story… Well, more like a story that takes place in this universe after this one. I'll give more details at a later date.
Now then, I was going to update this weekly like I normally do… but… I decided to just get it all up this week. I have a reason for this, but I will go over that in the epilogue. Let's just say… I have plans, and I want to start those plans ASAP, and getting through this story is something I wish to do first, just so there aren't any loose ends… I did promise that I would put up this story in full after all!
So, see you all tomorrow for Chapter 2!
