Part 8 - Gods and Wolves

Chapter 139 - The Siege Perilous

After three more days, Gwen was awake. Max hadn't visited in that time, but she had a feeling he was usually quite busy keeping things in check. She put aside her worries about her son for now, though, as Miles arrived. She sat up carefully. Her injuries were technically fully healed, but her muscles were stiff and the skin round the injury felt tight.

"I've been thinking. Maybe we should have the wedding in your world." She said.

"Really? Why?"

"So we can have some spider themed stuff and I don't have to worry about the cops bursting through the door as I say 'I do'."

"That makes sense. My question at the moment is where we're gonna live. Neither of us has a job, so no bank's gonna give us a mortgage."

"True. I mean…we could crash with my dad for a bit until we can."

"I'm not sure he'd be OK with that."

"I don't know. We'll figure it out."

He kissed her forehead and pushed a few stray strands of hair away from her eyes.

In the space of three months, the spiders planned their wedding. Now it was time. Miles was about as nervous as he could be, but some of it faded away as Gwen walked up the aisle. The ceremony seemed to start off without a hitch, but Gwen had a feeling there was no way things could go so perfectly. And she was right: as they reached the end of the vows, things went from great to a disaster faster than the Titanic. There was a chuckling from someone in the audience that grew to full on laughter as they sprouted four spider legs. Miles and Gwen stared in horror as Wolf Spider advanced up the aisle dragging something behind him.

"Pathetic! A wedding? Here's my gift to the bride and groom!"

He hurled the thing he was dragging down at the pair's feet. Max curled up a little more, his body battered and broken.

"Now all I have to do is kill you, and my revenge will be finished."

Wolf sprinted towards the pair as they leapt out of the way behind a piano.

"This is not what I imagined." Miles joked.

"Me neither. I'd fight this guy but…a wedding dress is about as far from a spider suit as I can get. Jeans and a t-shirt I can do, but not this."

"Good thing I came prepared, right!"

"What?"

Miles rolled back his sleeves to reveal his web shooters.

"Really?"

"Turns out my spidey sense still works. Now I've got our son to save, cos a suit is a bit better than a wedding dress."

"Go get 'em."

Miles leapt over the top of the piano, planting his foot in Wolf Spider's face as Peter B Parker, Spiderham, Noir and Peni in her robot leapt in to lend a hand. Miles charged a venom strike and punched his enemy sending him flying. Spiderham bonked Wolf on the head with his hammer and Noir kicked his feet out from under him. But this victory streak wasn't to last as Wolf gained control and wrapped the Gang up in his spider legs and pinned Miles down. That was when the unlikeliest of allies showed up: Doctor Olivia Octavius' arms were exactly what were need in this situation. Chairs became lethal projectiles and the tides very quickly turned back in the spiders' favour. Miles hit Wolf with one more venom strike sending something flying from the target's pocket. Gwen scrambled out from behind the piano and caught it. It seemed to be a red rectangle about the size of a large phone. Four spikes reached from each of its corners. She wished she could help her friends and now husband, but in a wedding dress she was useless. Instead, she made her way over to Max who seemed to weaken even more as she approached. She had a theory and moved the object she had just caught away from him; some of his strength returned. So that was what this was: the Siege Perilous. The shield that once protected Death's lover from the High Elder Gods. In its presence, had Max lost all his power and that was how Wolf had defeated him. By this time, Wolf was pinned to the ground by enough webs to keep a T-Rex down. Miles turned to Doc Ock.

"Where'd you come from, and why are you helping us? And thanks, I guess."

"I was patrolling the multiverse and heard about someone collecting shards of the Siege Perilous. My investigations led me here. As for why I'm helping you: I'm a scientist. Did your wife never tell you the battleships were my idea?"

"I think she mentioned it, but I kinda thought she was joking."

"Here I am. I'll keep an eye on your friend if you want to help your wife."

Miles ran over to Gwen who thrust the Siege Perilous into his hands.

"Destroy it, Miles. It's killing Max."

He didn't hesitate: he put some distance between himself and everyone left in the room and punched the object with a mega venom strike. It crumbled apart into six pieces. The effect on Max seemed instantaneous: he opened his eyes and a shockwave exploded from him that pushed Gwen away a little and shook the dust off all the places in this building that hadn't been cleaned in years. He sat up, his eyes glowing blue, and taking a deep breaths. Miles came over again still holding the fragments but they didn't have any effect. Gwen hugged Max, feeling a motherly instinct to protect him that she hadn't felt before now. Miles ruffled his son's hair. Max squirmed to get free and managed.

"That was nice." He said light-heartedly.

"What happened?" Asked Miles.

"I was chasing Wolfy to finish him off but he got the Siege Perilous and reminded me that at core I'm still human. Talking of the Siege, where is it? I'm guessing it's not…"

Miles dropped the shards on the floor.

"Oh. Time to go scatter some more overpowered objects across the omniverse I guess. And sorry about crashing the wedding, and for not bringing my gift with me."

"It's OK. You were a bit tied up."

"That's one way of putting it." Max picked himself up groggily, just about keeping his balance. "Wolfy's a weirdo, but the sort of weirdo that can be contained unlike his Inheritor friends. I'll take him to the SCP Foundation; I'm sure they'd love an extra anomaly to look after. You go and have a nice wedding reception; I'll do the dirty work. And congrats, too."

"Thanks, Max." Gwen replied.

SCP Foundation Site 19 was the largest site the Foundation owned. It held hundreds of anomalies, and could be classified as one of the most dangerous places in dimension 9001. Max hauled Wolf Spider up to the front gate, receiving countless machine guns pointing in his direction.

"Hello people. Any chance I could hand you a new anomaly? He's got spider powers and spider legs, but he's just a normal human."

"Who are you?" Barked one of the gate's guards.

"Dei Volente, a High Elder God. Just take this guy and keep him out my sight."

Max kicked Wolf Spider towards the guards and turned to leave.

"Halt! You must come with us."

"Over my dead body, and you'll find that very difficult to achieve."

"You must be given amnestic treatment."

The God sighed and turned back.

"If you ever persuade me to get amnestic treatment, I doubt it will even work. Anyway, I need to go. My parents are getting married and I want to catch the end of the reception. Bye!"
