"Run Henry!" JJ shouted as she kicked the ball up their garden for him to catch. They had been playing soccer for the past 30 minutes. After spent their Saturday indoors due to the miserable weather, the mothers decided to have a day outside, they'd had a picnic in the garden and left the kids to play among themselves. When the older women got bored sitting down they decided a family game of soccer would get them moving and laughing.
Henry laughed chasing the ball. Since the dinner a week or so back he noticed how things seemed much more normal. His mom would cook while his momma would do homework. They had a couple of movie nights and today was the first day since his parents had come back they had played in the garden like they used to. Soccer was his favourite thing to play. He want to be a soccer star like his Momma had in school and college. She had some pictures up in the house of her days when she played. She looked happy. Like she did when they played as a family. He ran quickly after the ball very aware he was being chased by Luke and Gracie. His foot swung back and then into the ball which landed in the goal. "Score!" He shouted excitedly. He ran round the Garden with JJ and Michael shouting yes while the others pouted.
"We won!" Michael said to his opposing team. JJ came over hi fiving him as well as Henry who was now standing on the other side of Michael. "You get to be our servants for a day." He said crossing his arms. Every time Michael won something it involved someone being his servant.
"Not quite." Emily chuckled. "You guys go play again while me and your Momma rest. Our old bones need to sit down." She threw the ball into the garden then grabbed JJ's hand taking her over to their outdoor chairs.
It had now been nearly 2 weeks since JJ had started her new medication, Felbatol. So far it was working more than her other medication. Her seizures had lessened. They hadn't completely gone, but JJ was slowly getting more of her day back. She hoped if she could get her seizures to stay at around 1 a day, she could be cleared for desk duty physically. She was enjoying her days more. Her body was no longer so sore and tired from the continuous fits she had been having for around 12 weeks.
Emily was due back at work on the Tuesday only 2 days away. She as much as she was excited to go back to work, she was terrified of leaving JJ alone. She had spent the past few days showing Alice how to deal with JJ if she had a seizure while she was at work. The au-pair was ready and confident assuring Emily she would look after her wife, to which she had been grateful but she still worried. After talking to the team after her first therapy session she had wanted to talk to JJ. But Wednesday was a write off. After her drop attack in Rossi's office and having her rescue meds JJ had been drowsy the rest of the day and having another seizure that day had written her off for the Thursday morning too. Since then things had been much better in terms of her seizures having either 2 or 1 a day over the past couple of days. But Emily just hadn't had the guts to talk to JJ yet.
The blonde handed Emily her iced tea and sat down with her glass of water. "I'm so jealous of you right now. I'd kill for an iced tea." Her wife smiled and took a long sip of her iced tea. JJ pouted. "Your mean."
"I'm sorry." Emily chuckled. "One sip won't matter will it?" She held the glass out to JJ. She was a grown up and if she wanted some, she could make that decision.
"If I have the one sip I'll probably want more. I'm not gonna risk it." JJ pushed the glass back to Emily and sipped on her cold water. "So, what are you 5 cooking tonight." JJ winked. Before starting the soccer match they had made a deal losers cook dinner and clean up. Usually they split the duties. JJ had taken 2 of the boys knowing Henry was actually a good player, and she had a few more skills than the others. The others just kicked the ball and hoped for the best. 5 on 3 was hard for the smaller team but they still won. And looking over to the grass Michael and Henry were still celebrating their victory.
Emily shrugged. "We'll see what the boys want first. They win their choice."
"I won too." JJ pouted again.
"And you're an adult babe, our victories don't count when you have kids." She laughed when JJ's pout didn't leave her face. "You can pick dessert." A smile immediately graced JJ's face and Emily continued laughing.
The brunette stood up and called over all 6 kids. They came running over, so she back down. JJ handed them all the juice cups which had been brought out in the day, they greedily chugged down their drinks, thirsty from the running and Virginia sun.
"Michael Henry. What do you want for dinner?" JJ asked while they were all close by.
The two boys walked away to talk. They whispered back and forth for a couple of minutes, almost as though they were plotting something. They laughed and walked towards their moms with a big smile on their face. "Cowboy Pie." The exclaimed together.
Emily's head immediately turned to JJ. "What did you do?" she smirked but both brows raised. When they first got together JJ had an obsession with the dish, she had learnt it from her parents as a child but Emily wasn't keen. She hated beans.
"What?" JJ shrugged. "You were MIA and I took that opportunity to make myself feel better. They all liked it. So I made it another 2 times, we even put cheese on it and they liked it more."
Emily shook her head. "Fine but I'm taking some of these devil spawns with me. I'm gonna need to go to the store. Who's coming?"
All the kids put their hands up and started jumping hoping to be taken. Going to the store meant going out and going with Mommy meant they could get some treats. They all really wanted to go. "Can you take the younger three?" JJ asked.
The older woman nodded and took them in to get ready while JJ took the other three to go get cleaned up and to help tidy the mess they had created earlier in the day.
"Okay, I'll be back in around an hour okay. I'm going to go to Walmart, so I can get everything for dessert. Phone me if you think of anything we need." Emily grabbed the younger three and out the door she went leaving JJ and the older ones alone.
It was 45 minutes later before and JJ's phone rang. Her and the 3 older children had been tidying the rest of the mess created. Having so many children meant the mess was multiplied each time a child was added. They had managed to get all the washing done as well as tidy the girl's bedroom. It was always the messiest. JJ answered her phone wondering who wanted her. She looked at the caller ID and smiled. "What did you forge… wait what… Emily, what the fuck… and they're fine…You're sure? How are you getting back? Okay see you in 5." JJ put her phone back in her pocket trying to hold in any emotion she had. She turned to the three who were pulling out a board game. "Can you guys stay here? Your moms gonna be back in a minute and I need to talk to her."
"Sure Momma." Lizzie smiled, oblivious to any kinds of her emotions she could be hiding.
JJ sat downstairs in a panic. Waiting for the rest of her family to come back home. She held back any tears, she didn't want to be the one crying all the time. She closed her eyes putting her head in her hands as a stress headache came on. The door distracted her from her thoughts. She jumped up from her seat.
"Oh my god. Are you all okay?" She dropped to her knees embracing the small kids in a hug.
"It was scary." Gracie said clinging to her momma extra tight.
Emily still had a red face. She put down the bags of shopping by the door. "It just came out of no where. I'm just glad we only went into a pole and no one got hurt."
"Me too." JJ mumbled not wanting to let go of the kids in front of her.
