AN: I hope this is okay for you.
Read and Review
The first thing JJ noticed as she woke was the pain. Everything hurt. Her bones ached; her muscles felt tense. Breathing hurt, moving her eyes behind her closed lids ached. She tried to use her memory to think what had happened. But nothing was coming to her mind. She opened her eyes slowly. It took a lot of effort; she could feel her eyelids trying to close. She fought to keep them open, but it was hard. The world was blurry through the small slits she had managed to make through her heavy eye lids. She couldn't see anything. Something was moving in her vision, two dark figures. She tried to open her mouth to speak but something was in her mouth stopping any sound from coming out. But the blonde was too tired to fight the sleepiness which was washing over her again. She closed her eyes an welcomed the sleep maybe when she woke up the next time, she would be able to make sense of the world.
JJ had continued this routine for a couple of hours. Emily had been worried, she hadn't made any effort to removed the tube which was in her throat the first few times she had woke, then when Abi removed the tube JJ had made no effort to speak. But Abi had reminded the patients wife that she probably wasn't able to do it at the moment. The drugs she had been receiving were muscle relaxants. JJ was going to be very Jelly like for a while, physio would come up when JJ was awake for more than a few seconds to get her moving safely with the help of Abi.
Emily had waited hours, it was coming on JJ's second night there, Emily had planned to stay one more night, then she was going to start spending evenings at home with the kids. She couldn't rely her team to be staying with the kids when they had their own families. Emily had sorted a routine with Rossi and Krystall who were going to help her out until JJ was home, she was ever so grateful for there help. She had one last night to focus all her attention on JJ before she had to return to whatever her normalish life was. This time when Emily noticed JJ wake up it was different. She had spoke to a nurse who was paging Abi, who was currently at home. She felt awful that had to page her, but Abi had been insistent and told them any slight change she was to be paged.
"JJ, can you hear me?" Emily asked as she noticed JJ's eyes open. She looked highly confused and scared.
"Emily?" JJ questioned as her eyes tried to focus on the woman who had a hand on her cheek, and another lay on top of her heart.
The brunette took in a deep breath of relief. So far so good. Nothing seemed different. JJ seemed as close to herself as she could be. "Yeah baby. How do you feel?"
Lips moved but no sound came out. JJ had no idea what to say. She was scared, confused and in a lot of pain. She had pulled every muscle in her body, or that's how it felt. "I don't…" She paused looking round. The younger mother saw the machines. She put together she was in hospital, once that had clicked, the rest had come rushing back to her. "I'm in hospital?" She asked confirming her thoughts.
"Yeah, you had a seizure that lasted nearly 2 hours. Dr West, Abi is on her way back in I think."
"Oh." JJ closed her eyes just to gather herself. The longer she was awake, the more that was coming back to her. The therapy, the shower, the images.
On queue Abi walked through the door dressed in a long black dress, not too formal, something for a causal evening out. "Hi, I believe someone's awake."
"She is." Emily said with a big smile. But it fell when she saw what Abi was wearing. "Oh, my goodness, I'm so sorry. You don't have to be here." The brunette said now feeling extremely guilty the doctor had come in on her evening off.
Abi shrugged, she had just finished having a meal with her daughter at a restaurant not too far from the hospital, which was why she was able to get back at a moment's notice. Her girl was waiting at the nurses station while she did a check-up. "Hey, don't worry about it. Being on call this week means I don't have to be next week. Don't worry about. So, JJ, how are you feeling?" She brough the attention to the blonde lay in the bed who still looked slightly dazed.
"I don't know." The patient wasn't completely sure how she was feeling. Everything just felt a mess. One she couldn't control.
"Any pain?" The doctor did a couple of checks, on the patients eyes and reflexes and writing numbers down in a chart which was situated at the bottom of the bed.
A slight nervous chuckle escaped from JJ's mouth "Everywhere." She really did mean that.
Dr West nodded, "That's to be expected. You went into Status Epilepticus. Your seizure lasted almost 2 hours, only 2 minutes short." She paused watching as not much of a reaction came from JJ, usually patients would be shocked at the revelation that they had been seizing for such a long time. She continued "We've put a lot of drugs in you to stop the seizure so you might find it very hard to move at the moment, but don't be alarmed. As they leave your system, you'll be able to move more, it just might be a little sore, you were convulsing for a good 40 minutes." Abi reassured her patient placing her hand on her shoulder before looking over things again.
"Why did it happen?" There was no expression in JJ's voice as everything was still rushing back to here in pieces of what exactly could have led her to be in this bed right now.
Eyes moved between the couple. From the brunette to the blonde and back again. "Well, do you want to talk with Emily here, or just you and me?" As a doctor she had to provide her patients with this option in case there was things they didn't want the other person in the room to know.
There was no doubt about it "She can stay." Whatever the doctor had to say she could say in front of Emily. JJ guessed she might not remember much of what the doctor said after she went back to sleep. The exhaustion was already flowing over her willing her to go back to sleep.
Dr West paused. "So, my conclusion going off everything I've seen and results, is a mixture of a couple things. Your sodium was low, your have slightly raised infection markers and extreme stress." She had made sure to double check everything, although she was glad that she had come conclusion for the couple, knowing what JJ had been through, if it was something else which caused the seizure it probably would have been easier on the couple.
Emily jumped in. She knew what sodium was, it was salt. And Infection. Apart from a slight runny nose her partner was fine. "How has she got a low sodium? What kind of infection?" She ran back through her own mind seeing if she missed anything.
"I'm not under extreme stress." She frowned and flared her nostrils slightly. JJ knew she was under stress. But that didn't mean it was the reason for her seizures she was always under stress. It came with the job. That wasn't it.
"Okay, so one at a time." She slowed the couple down. "Easiest first, you're probably just run down and coming down with a cold or something. Sometimes it can cause elevated infection levels, but we will monitor them while you're here. Sodium, well it's a couple things." This was the more complicated of things. It was easy to correct and hard to get as low as JJ's had turned out to be. "I've noticed you've lost weight, you usually weigh around 115lbs you look about 105lbs, I've not been able to weigh you but I don't want to seem arrogant but I'm pretty good at guessing weights, it's a party trick of mine." She trailed off slightly. "So, I think because of the extreme stress you've been under with the therapy your doing you've probably avoided a lot of meals, and if you are eating, I can imagine your pretty sick. Throwing up after you eat, before you ate. Am I along the right lines here?" The doctor knew she was right. Knowing all to well about stress and how it had affected her own body many times.
JJ nodded. She had avoided telling Emily how sick she really had been, therapy was having an awful effect on her, and she would be throwing up before and afterwards. So, it had been easier for her to avoid meals so the throw up wasn't as bad. If she ever told her partner how bad things were, she would probably be made to stop, and she didn't want to. In her mind this was her last shot at getting better. "Look JJ I'm not here to tell you off or get you in trouble with your wife. This isn't your fault. Your body is fighting against everything your doing and you've been doing an amazing job fighting against it so far, but you've got to fight harder, ask for help. Rely on other people. If you need to talk you have your regular doctor, your therapist and even myself. We all want you to get better. But ending up here isn't how you do that, so we have to work together to keep you out of here."
The blonde turned to her wife who had sat watching and listening. She didn't want to disappoint her. "I'm sorry." She said as her voice broke and tears began to fall.
"Don't be you heard what Abi said. It's not your fault. Your doing amazing. This is just another obstacle which your going to get over." Emily stood placing her hands gently on the crying woman. She hated what happening to her. She had never really seen JJ this broken. There had been a couple of occasions which had come close, but now this by far was one of the worst.
"I just want it to go away." JJ cried. She weakly grabbed at Emily. She hated how pathetic she was. This was the breakdown she had known was going to come but was putting off as long as she could. With the help of Abi and Emily she was moved over in her bed so Emily could climb in with her. The tears fell and she couldn't stop them.
"I'll come back tomorrow. Rest up." Abi patted her patient on the shoulder and left the couple to have the moment.
Once Abi left the room, she tried to compose herself. Sometimes her patients got to here. Seeing the vulnerability of the blonde in the room certainly got to her. It reminded her of herself when she was younger. Her daughter hadn't come about in the conventional matter. Abi had gone through her own trauma when she was 17. It took her years, but she had managed to get over it. Though it didn't stop the memories coming back from time to time. "Mom." A dark-haired girl called, as she walked towards Abi.
"Mom are you okay?" The girl asked seeing tears fall down the doctors cheeks.
"Vi, Yeah I'm okay." Abi had named her daughter Violet, which she had come to learn meant faith. The young girl had given her mom faith that life would be okay after the life she had experienced when she was only a teen.
Violet wrapped her arms round her mom. She knew her mother had a hard job and sometimes she would cry. All she could do to help her mom was give her a warm hug an provide her the support she needed. The 18-year-old loved her mom more than anything else, she was her own hero she saved lives daily. A hug was all she could do to show her how much of hero she was, but it was enough. "Are we going home?"
The doctor nodded wrapping her arms round her little girl. She landed a kiss on the top of her head and stayed wrapped in each other's arms for a little longer. "Come on let's go home. Movie night in my bed?"
"Yeah." Violet smiled. The two walked out the hospital and headed home. Emotions still high, but they would be okay. In time everyone would be okay.
