Disclaimer- I do not own The Walking Dead
This one is for Shadowoftheblackdeat. You're review made me chuckle and we definitely can't have you becoming "one of those people that only talks about work, news and other boring stuff". Can't have that at all, so I've got you.
acetwolf94, KEZZ1, Weida, poty90. Thank you for the reviews. I'm really pleased you're enjoying it.
Danny's POV
My eyes flash open, I don't feel well at all. I honestly feel like I'm going to throw up but I don't rush, because if I do Daryl will know something is wrong. He needs to sleep. Instead I sit up slowly and grab my boots and coat. I don't think I have the time to put them on, especially not under the watchful eye of Daryl. I know he's awake, he always wakes up when I get up, but I always pretend I don't notice and he never says anything.
As soon as I shut the bedroom door behind me, I'm racing down the stairs and out the backdoor. I barely make it across the back garden where I then throw up any food that was left in my system. That Chilli was most definitely bad. How Merle is still sleeping is beyond me, he ate all of it.
I wipe the back of my hand against my mouth and after making sure that I'm not about to throw up again I finally slip my feet into my boots and put on my coat. There is no way I'm gonna be able to go back to sleep now, there's also probably no point. My watch shift is straight after Carols, and her shift is more than likely nearly over.
I make my way round to the front of the house to where Carol is pacing back and forth across the gate, probably trying to keep warm. She tenses when she hears my feet crunching on the gravel but immediately relaxes when she see's me.
She looks at the watch that she always has tucked inside a pocket. "You're a bit early".
"Couldn't sleep so I figured I'd let you get more".
As I move over to her she frowns. "Are you okay?"
I force a smile on to my face. "Yep just feel a little iffy from the food last night, but I think some air will help." She doesn't stop frowning. "In fact it's helping already". Not completely truthful but fresh air will help.
"Have you been sick?"
"Just a little, I didn't eat that much. It's Merle that we should worry about".
"I can stay out here with you, at least until you feel a hundred percent".
"Honestly I'm fine."
She doesn't immediately agree but finally she nods her head. She put Merle's rifle in the back of the truck. "Okay, but come and get me the second you start to feel worse".
"I will".
Even though Carol tried to stay she doesn't hang around for very long once she's told she's not needed. I let out a very heavy breath and grab the rifle I found back at the farm. It's lonely out here but I still enjoy the late night watch shifts, it's time to yourself, allows you to think without interruptions. It's peaceful.
There is only one thing that I don't like that comes with this quiet. You can hear the Walkers groans. The noise seems to drift across open spaces, I can't tell how far away this one is because I can't see it. It's just wandering around out there in the dark. I hope it's not stuck somewhere because then I'll be hearing that horrible sound for the next couple of hours and I really don't want that, especially not while I'm feeling like this.
The hours fly by because all of a sudden Merle is banging open the front door. "Mornin' squirt". He's here for his shift and he looks perfectly fine.
"How are you not sick?"
"Told ya, got me an iron stomach." He pats his tummy. "This baby can take on anythin'". To be fair it probably could, with the amount of crap he's probably put in his body there's probably nothing that could make him sick. And I couldn't be any more jealous of him than I am right now. I feel better but there's still the sick feeling lingering in my stomach. "Carol said ya looked like shit this mornin', how ya feelin' now?"
I scoff, "she did not say that, I guarantee it".
"Close enough". He shrugs one shoulder.
"I'm fine".
He seems satisfied with my answer and moves on from the subject. He leans up against the gate to stare out. The Walker that I heard at the start of my shift had thankfully moved on so it's been quiet ever since.
It'll be easier to keep watch once the sun rises, which should start any minute now. Merle always gets the best shift, he gets to watch it but today I'm stayin' up and I'm going to see it. I'm not tired so there's no way I'm gonna be able to get some sleep.
"Can you see anythin'", That is the third time in about twenty seconds that Merle has asked that question. Surely he could just wait for me to be like oh I see something, but no, he's being annoying and I refuse to answer him.
I'm up on the back of the truck, with my rifle resting against the roof and I'm using the sight to see what's out there. Turns out I can see the edge of the town pretty well through it and seeing as a couple of us are going in there today we figured we'd look see what is happening over there. Not much from what I can see.
"Anythin'". I give him a side glare which causes him to raise his arms slightly in surrender. He's stood beside me leaning on the roof and other than the constant need for an update he's letting me do this alone. No trying to take over because he thinks I can't do it or because he thinks he can do better.
"I see one". That's the first Walker I've seen over there and we've been stood here for at least half an hour.
"Just one?"
"Yeah, probably means there isn't many over there or they're stuck somewhere. Either way that's good". Doesn't mean we let our guard down, none of us are that stupid. This whole thing was to just gives us a heads up. If main street was crowded with Walkers then we knew we definitely weren't going over there, and that we'd need to find somewhere else to stay but it isn't and that's relatively good news.
"What are you two doin'?" Daryl's awake.
I smile at him over my shoulder. "Morning".
He leans his arms over the sides of the truck and gives me a twitch of the lips. "You didn't come back to bed".
"I wasn't tired". I go back to looking through the sight. "Ooh, I got another one".
"Is it a different one?" Merle's question is slightly insulting.
"Yes, it's a different one Merle. I know how to tell them apart".
Daryl sighs, "really, tell me. What are you two doin'?"
"Tryin' to find Danny 'ere a boyfriend. Ya just ain't cuttin' it for her. So far we 'ave two candidates".
Daryl rolls his eyes with a quiet scoff and then he's walking away from us. Probably way too early for him to be dealing with Merle.
"You're an idiot, you know that right".
"Yeah I do". Merle then grins.
"So who's going out into town today?"
"You, Daryl and Carol. Well as long as ya feelin' better".
"You're staying here, voluntarily?"
"Someone's gotta keep watch over our crap and Sophia. Plus there's a couple of houses down the road that I wanna check out. Easy run to take Sophia on".
That gains my full attention. "You promise me you'll look out for her. No messing around. It's different with her than it is with us. You have to protect her".
The usual smirk on his lips is gone, he's in serious mode. "I will. I promise you".
Daryl comes and stand before me, "Ya ready to go?"
"I am". He holds out the car keys for me to take. Guess I'm driving. "Lead the way". As he walks over to get on his bike Carol stops me from climbing in to the drivers seat.
"Are you sure you're okay to come?"
I know they're just asking out of concern but the 'are you okay' question are seriously starting to get on my nerves. I threw up once, hours ago and I've been fine ever since. Thankfully neither Carol nor Merle told Daryl because if they had he would not be letting me come along and the questioning would be ten times worse. I'm not sure why they haven't said anything but I seriously appreciate it.
"I am fine, I'm not lying. If I wasn't I wouldn't be coming along."
"Okay, but at least let me drive, just in case".
I sigh but hand her the keys nevertheless. I'm willing to compromise if it makes her feel happier. Daryl does stare at me as I walk back around to the passenger side but he doesn't say anything and if he does I'll just say she really wanted to drive. Two seconds later we're pulling out the driveway and Merle's closing the gate behind us.
The journey shouldn't take any more than ten, fifteen minutes but I don't think I'm going to make it. We're only been in the car for five minutes and I've already realised that I am most definitely not better like I thought.
I tilt my head back and close my eyes and try my hardest to breath through it, and also try not to think about it. Maybe not thinking will stop what I know is about to happen.
"What's wrong?"
This time I don't hate the question. "Stop".
"What?"
But I don't say it again, I can't. My hand is over my mouth and if I remove it it won't be pretty. She doesn't stop the car straight away, I guess it takes a few seconds to make sense of what she's seeing but as soon as the car has slowed down enough I've got the door open forcing her to push down on the break pretty hard.
I hold onto the door as I unload my stomach, which really isn't anything but liquid. I'd only eaten a few biscuits this morning just in case and I'd already unloaded yesterdays food. Daryl's hand appears before my bent over form holding a rag which I gladly take.
"What the hell?"
I take in a couple of deep breaths but being outside the car is helping.
"I woke up not feeling well, I think it was the Chilli". He opens his mouth but I stop him before he can say anything. "But being outside made me feel better. I honestly thought I was fine, I guess the car is just a little more bumpy than my stomach can handle at the moment".
"Why didn't you tell me? I can't... We're goin' back". I grab his arm as he starts to turn away.
"No, we don't need to go back. Okay. I'm sorry I didn't tell you but I was fine. I'll just ride the rest of the way on the back of your bike. The air helps because I'm already okay again."
I can see him thinking it over, fighting with himself over what's right, because his eyes are moving very slightly as they scan over my face and then he's looking back into my eyes. "Please".
"Shit". He rubs his hand over his mouth "Fine. But ya ain't comin' in with us. Ya stayin' outside, in the truck". This time it's my turn to be stopped from talking because as soon as I try he's shutting me up. "No, this ain't up for discussion".
Well, he's well and truly pissed off at me. Way to go me.
I know, another kind of short one but It's only for these small filler chapters. Won't be long before our little group of 5 get into some trouble.
