Disclaimer- I do not own the Walking Dead.
WOW 3 chapter in three days, I have a week off work and I seem to have the urge to just write, so I'm hoping I can keep this up.
We've finally made it to season 3.
OldLonBird- Hi, glad you're still reading and I hope your enjoying it. Rick isn't in charge of the Dixon family and it's definitely going to show. They left to get away from that and just because Rick's group is back doesn't mean their gonna let things go back to how they were.
I had to do some research for this chapter so I apologise if I got anything wrong.
Enjoy :)
Danny's POV
Herschel finally drops all the soil he was holding in his hand and rubs his hands against his trousers. "This soil is good".
Daryl gestures off towards the side of the yard, out past the fence, "There is some fresh water on the other side of the fence to, it just needs some filtering".
T-Dog cranes his neck to see the pile of bodies sat in the same direction. "How'd you guys clear it?"
Merle scoffs, "Sheer stupidity".
"We had to get that gate closed", Daryl says, "Once we managed it we shot the ones still in here".
"You ran through that many Walkers?" Glenn's voice is laced with shock.
"Danny is an amazing shot", Sophia's words are defensive as she answers Glenn, "She cleared him a path".
"How long have you been here?" Sheriff asks.
"Two days, we're killing those in there", Daryl gestures towards the closed off yard. "When there's only a few left we are gonna go in there to clear the last ones".
Beth leans closer to Lori. "This'll be a safe place to have the baby".
Maggie's hand lands heavily on her sisters knee "Beth!" Maggie then shakes her head at her.
The silence that follows is definitely awkward.
Sheriff gently clears his throat and has a silent conversation with Herschel. "Would you guys like some help to clear it out. It would get done quicker and it'll get you guys inside" He looks over at the actual prison. "It looks like it fell pretty early on, it could mean the supplies are intact. They'd have an infirmary, Commissary".
That peaks Daryl's interest. "Armoury?"
"Yeah, I mean that would be outside the prison itself but the wardens office would have all the info. Weapons, food, medicine. You guys have really found a gold mine".
Daryl looks at the four of us in turn, silently asking the important question, should they stay? We went looking for Herschel all those months back so it would be stupid to turn them away now. When none of us shake our heads he turns back to the Sheriff. "We could do with some help".
Merles hands land on my shoulders as he stands over me from behind. I don't have to look up at him to know he's wearing a very serious expression. "But this don't mean you get to make all the decisions. We left to get away from all that. We're lettin' you in, this is our place. You can be in charge of ya own little group and we'll make the decisions for ours."
The Sheriff nods his head. "We can work like that".
Carol gets to her feet. "Let me get some bedding and then you guys can get some rest. It looks like you haven't slept in a while. We can keep watch".
The group rest for a good few hours, for some that meant taking a nap for others that just mean sitting back and watching their new surroundings, revelling in the fact that they are finally safe.
Herschel comes walking over to me a few hours after we leave them to it. For a second he just stands looking out the fence along the perimeter.
I wait for him to speak first.
"You came back to look for me?"
"Yeah, When we found out I was pregnant it was the only thing we could think to do. I've never been pregnant before and Carol's knowledge was limited to her own experience".
"How have you been since you found out?"
"Okay, I guess. Carol collected as many pregnancy and medical books as she could once we realised we weren't going to find you guys again".
He nods gently. "And you've had no problems?"
"We think I've been suffering from Hyporemesis Gravidorum"
"Hyperemesis Gravidarum. HG for short".
"Yeah that one, but we found that bland foods and plenty of fluids has seriously helped. I am still getting seriously travel sick but we tried not to be on the road too long".
"Do you know if you have complications that run in the family, it can be anything."
I try and think back but I don't know. "I don't know, sorry".
"It's okay don't worry. How about you come with me and we do a quick check up".
"Uh.." I look around for where I saw Daryl last, he's already looking at me so I gesture for him to come over. "Will you come with me, Herschel wants to do a check up".
"Sure", He puts his hand on the back of my neck as Herschel leads us away from any people. It's the best privacy we're going to get considering we don't have any rooms we can go in.
Herschel picks a spot. "Could you sit down for me?"
I lower myself onto the grass.
"Now I'm gonna start with the blood pressure. Don't have any equipment so it's going to have to be the old fashioned way." He grabs my wrist and places two fingers just below the base of my thumb. He looks at his watch as he counts. He lets go just as quickly and offers me a smile. "Seems pretty good. Now if you don't mind could you lie down flat on your back. Has the baby been moving?"
I do as I'm instructed. "Yes".
"Great, and where abouts are you feeling it the most?"
I put my fingers against my ribs, "Around here".
He goes to lift the t-shirt I'm now wearing up but hesitates. "You mind".
"Sure".
He lifts up my top to expose my bump. He then runs his fingers across the very top, just below my chest before seemingly finding what he's after, he then pushes down very gently. The gasp I let out is involuntary as the baby starts moving.
Herschel smiles. "I fully believe your baby is in a good position, head down which is the best position it can be in. It makes it easier on you and is safer for the baby." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a tape measure. I raises my eyebrows up at Daryl who just gives me a quirk of the eyebrow back. "I'm going to measure you Fundal height. It tells us how well your baby is growing. Now I can tell you have a small bump. A lot smaller than Lori's but I'd still like to measure it just to see".
He doesn't carry on but he means just in case there's a cause for concern.
"Have you had anything to drink since the last time you went to the toilet?" I shake my head, no. "Good, this works best when the bladder is empty." He places the tape measure against the top of my tummy and then goes all the way down to the top of my pelvic bone. He stares at it for a second before stuffing it back in his pocket. "Honestly I think your doing really well. With you being at about 37 weeks though we're gonna have to have you be prepared that you could go into labour at any moment. If you start to feel any tightening, which can feel like really bad period cramps or a bad backache or even the sudden urge to go to the toilet then you come to me. Also if your water breaks but that'll be quite an obvious sign. Have you had any Braxton hicks?"
"No".
"Okay that's alright, they're usually painless but they can make people believe they're about to give birth so just try and remain calm if you feel like any of those."
Daryl holds his hand out to help me sit back up. "Thanks Doc".
"No problem but if you get any questions or any concern no matter how small just come to me first. We don't need you unnecessarily panicking. Now before I let you get up I need to ask you something very serious", He takes in a deep breath before letting it out, like he's trying to bide his time. "When we left the farm, we found out some news about Walkers that could be dangerous".
I know exactly what he's going to say. "We know. We're all infected right?"
The relief on his face is definitely clear now he hasn't got to be the one to break it to me. He pats my knee before standing back up. "From now on you need to take it easy". I nod and let him start walking away before holding out my hands for Daryl to help me stand.
"You heard the Doc, ya gotta take it easy. From now the only task you'll 'ave is watch duty. Now we're all back together, they can help us clear out the rest of the Walkers". I sigh. "I'm not going to argue but this still doesn't mean you can treat me like I can't do anything. I'm still capable".
He pulls me closer and places a kiss against my forehead. "I know ya are".
