Authoress Note: Welcome to Chapter 1 of Someone Like You. Thank you to those who helped me decide to do this whole rewrite because honestly, it deserves justice in being written. Hopefully, you guys will enjoy this new and improved story. I'm going to make sure that I am going to do it better justice than the last few rewrites and hopefully they turn out well. I'm going to make sure to add more background to Rose's character to make her better than the last two rewrites. I want her to be a strong older sister and protective, hopefully, this rewrite will show you that it's changing. Without further ado Chapter 1. Enjoy!
Chapter 1
Eight long years had passed and things for the two Swann siblings had gone fairly well. Except for a few things. Rose pushed back against her father when he wanted her to marry a fellow noble who she had no feelings for. She was adamant about the whole thing, refusing to even accept the proposal from Cutler Beckett. Perhaps one day soon Governor Swann would be able to find his eldest daughter the perfect match that would complete her heart.
She wanted to marry for love and not because of her social standing. Her father never fully understood why she had done what she had done with Cutler Beckett, but one day soon perhaps he would see that Rose wouldn't be happy with a man who wanted to rule the open oceans and make life hell for all of those who were on the open sea.
Rose shifted in her nice warm bed before slowly waking up for the morning. She shifted to a sitting position and stretched out a little before slowly getting up out of her bed. She went and grabbed her robe and easily slipped it on over her nightgown to cover everything to make sure she was decent. She looked up hearing a knock on the door. She had a feeling that it was her father at the door since today was a very special day for one man in the whole town of Port Royal.
"Rose? Are you decent?" Her father's voice rang out causing the young woman to go to the door.
Rose opened the door allowing her father to come into the room with some maids. She chewed on the side of her cheek knowing that this wasn't going to be an easy day. Today was going to be the day that Elizabeth would be proposed to. It made her feel sick to her stomach to know that her father had given up on finding her a man to marry and turning to his youngest daughter who was 20 to marry someone that she didn't like.
"Early riser as always." He said with a smile as the curtains were opened in her room allowing the light to come into the room. "It's a beautiful day. I have a gift for you."
Rose came closer to her father, her cheeks flushing some as he had called her an early riser. She always had been and she wasn't about to change how she was when it came to sleeping in. "A gift?" She questioned softly her brows furrowing some as she moved closer to her father to see what the gift was that he had gotten for her.
He opened the box he had and revealed a beautiful pink dress.
"Oh, father, it's beautiful." She said softly touching the material that was inside of the box. The material was very soft under her fingertips. But she could tell that the dress would be fairly tight on her body with how small the waist looked in the dress as she pulled it out of the box.
"Isn't it?"
"The occasion…"
"The Ceremony is today…"
Rose went behind the curtain to change into the dress. She closed her eyes as she removed her robe and everything else that was needed to change into the beautiful gown he had gotten for her.
"I was hoping that you would wear this dress for the Ceremony." Her father admitted softly shifting a little on his feet.
"The ceremony? You mean…" Rose questioned poking her head out to see her father. Her brows pinched together slightly concerned. She knew that the ceremony was today for James who would be becoming Commodore. She had watched him rise through the ranks and it made her heart swell in joy to know that he was doing so well.
"Captain Norrington's promotion ceremony." He said with a smile knowing that she would happily agree to it. At least, that was what he had hoped that she would do.
Rose let out a gasp as the maids began to tighten her corset around her middle. "I will father." Her hand went to her midsection as the maids continued to tighten it. Her breaths came out in short pants trying to keep her breathing shallow in hopes that she wouldn't lose her breath.
Her father smiled proudly as he waited for his eldest daughter to be ready for the ceremony. "Commodore Norrington, as he's about to become! A fine gentleman, don't you think? He fancies Elizabeth, you know." He said even more proudly. But he knew that wasn't what his eldest daughter wanted to hear. He knew that his eldest cared deeply for the man when they had come over from England.
Rose closed her eyes letting out a gasp as the maids tightened her corset even more. Her heart ached in her chest. Of course, James fancied her sister, and that hurt. She didn't understand why he didn't fancy her? Was it because Cutler Beckett had shown interest in her and wanted to marry her?
"Rose? How's it coming?"
"It's difficult to say." She admitted as she slowly opened her eyes. She winced a little as they continued to work on the corset making it even tighter.
"I'm told it's the latest fashion in London."
"Oh… women in London must've learned not to breathe." She said letting out another loud gasp of pain. "It's so tight, father." Her hand went to her middle as she tried to take a deep breath but it ended up becoming a shallow breath.
"I must go check on Elizabeth and wake her if she's not awake. I am pleased to hear that you wanted to wear the dress." Her father said softly.
"Yes father, it's indeed beautiful…" She said softly as the maid continued to work on getting her ready for the day. She heard the footsteps of her father leaving the room and let out a shaky breath. Her heart pounded in her chest thinking that James Norrington liked her younger sister, but then again, she didn't blame him. She knew her younger sister had bloomed into a beautiful young woman, a beautiful young woman that any man would be glad to have. But she knew deep down that Elizabeth didn't fancy James, but another instead.
Rose remembered all of the late-night talks for the last few years with her younger sister. Nothing about James had come from Elizabeth's lips. Elizabeth could only ever talk about Will Turner, a boy that she had seen that night in the water eight years ago through the dense fog.

Rose slowly came down the stairs following her father to see the visitor that her father was expecting. She bit her lip knowing it was the boy that they had saved from the water all of those years ago even though she was in the captain's corridors resting. But she tended to him when they had brought him into the cabin to rest. She knew that he grew up into a fine young man. A man that Elizabeth was enamored with and she knew that one day perhaps Elizabeth would do something about her crush on the young blacksmith.
"Ah, Mr. Turner! It's good to see you again!" Her father said happily as he finished coming down the stairs towards the young blacksmith.
Will turned to Governor Swann when he heard his name being called. He swallowed the lump in his throat when he saw that Rose was behind her father. He knew that he and Rose didn't see eye to eye due to knowing that he fancied Elizabeth. "Good day, sir. I have your order." Will said, putting the presentation case on the table before opening it. Inside of it is a beautiful sword and scabbard. Will carefully took it out reverently, before handing it over to Governor Swann.
Governor Swann pulled the sword from the scabbard and inspected it. Eyeing every single detail not see a single flaw in the blade that was in his hand.
Rose slowly came closer to take a look at the sword. She bit the inside of her cheek as she looked it over as well. She had to admit that it was a beautiful sword for even a blacksmith to make for James. It was perfect for him and the promotion that he would be getting later on that day.
"The blade is folded steel. That's gold filigree laid into the handle. If I may -" Will took the sword from Governor Swann, before balancing it on one finger at the point where the blade met the guard. "Perfectly balanced. The tang is nearly the full width of the blade." With practiced ease, he flipped the sword, catching it by the hilt before offering it back to Rose's father, bowing slightly.
"Impressive... very impressive. Ah, now, Commodore Norrington is going to be very pleased with this." Rose's father said as he put the sword back into its scabbard and handed it to Will. "Do pass my compliments on to your master."
Rose watched Will's face fall. She could figure out that it wasn't his master that had made it, it was him that made it. She bit her tongue, refusing to make a scene in front of her father, after all, she was a proper lady, perhaps more proper than her sister. Even though neither one of them was fully proper due to occasionally going down to the shop to visit Will. What she didn't understand was why his master would take all of the credit for Will's work. She knew that he was a drunkard and it wasn't fair to Will to do all the work while his master sat in the blacksmith shop drinking the money that was earned.
"I shall. A craftsman is always pleased to hear his work is appreciated -" Will turned and he stopped speaking, staring past both Rose and her father, his eyes landing on Elizabeth who was now standing on the stairs.
Their father turned to face both Rose and Elizabeth. "Ah, Elizabeth… Rose, you both look stunning." He was pleased that both of his daughters had accepted the gowns that he had gotten for them. They both were rather beautiful in the gowns and he couldn't be any happier to see that they were accepting their places as the Governor's daughters.
Will tried to say something but gave up, smiling to himself and nodding.
"Will! So good to see you!" Her hand went to something that was hidden, causing Rose to raise her brow.
Rose tilted her head a little wondering what Elizabeth was hiding from them.
"I had a dream about you last night." Elizabeth blurted out as she smiled a huge grin.
Rose let out a breath, of course, Elizabeth was going to allow her mouth to wander off with her again, not fully thinking it through before she said something.
"About me?"
"Elizabeth, is that entirely proper for you to…?" Her father tried to get her to stop talking.
"About the day we met. Do you remember?" Elizabeth said, completely ignoring her father.
Rose closed her eyes and gripped her fan tightly as she tried to take a shallow breath.
"How could I forget, Miss Swann?" Will said, his voice becoming fairly thick. He remembered the day well and he would be forever thankful for Elizabeth saving his life on the ocean. He was thankful for the whole Swann family for giving him a life here in Port Royal.
"Will, how many times must I ask you to call me 'Elizabeth'?" She asked disappointedly looking at Will. Her heart crumbled a little bit inside of her chest. What if Will didn't fancy her as she fancied him? Perhaps it would be something that she would have to give up on if he didn't love her back.
"At least once more, Miss Swann, as always." He admitted softly knowing his place, knowing how to properly talk to a woman and not upset Governor Swann of the whole thing. Including the older Swann sister who was giving Elizabeth a look of not being proper. He knew that both young women had a hard enough life that no matter what they had to be proper and polite in everything that they would ever do in life.
"There, see, at least the boy has a sense of propriety. Now, we really must be going." Their father said, taking the case from the table, before handing it to a servant. He led the servants out the door.
Rose slowly turned on her heels following her father. She caught up to him easily. "Father… are you sure that it is wise to allow Commodore Norrington to ask for Elizabeth's hand in marriage? She is still a fairly young father…" Rose voiced her concerns about the whole proposal to her younger sister. She knew that she had failed her father with the engagement that he had wanted her to go through. She couldn't afford to see her father disappointed once again about a failed engagement.
He turned and faced his daughter, seeing the look on her face. "Rose, my little bud… I know you worry, but he is the perfect fit for her. As well as you. But he will reign her in."
Rose looked down sadly.
"Unless there is something you wish to tell me, Rose… Do you have feelings for Commodore Norrington?" He questioned looking at his eldest, wanting her to admit the truth.
Rose swallowed the lump in her throat knowing that her father was so set on James marrying Elizabeth. "Father… I fancy Commodore Norrington…" She admitted softly knowing that she couldn't deny the fact that she cared for James. She couldn't lie and tell him that he didn't love James. It was impossible. "He'll make a proper woman out of her…" She said softly knowing that her father was still very adamant about wanting Elizabeth to become a proper woman. She knew that there was no way to change her father's mind in the engagement process. She was just going to have to accept it for the way it was.
He helped her into the carriage.
Rose took a shaky breath, closing her eyes. She couldn't lose it, not now, not with how close they were to the ceremony and she wasn't about to mess up the ceremony by being bitter about the whole proposal that was going to happen. Sometimes she wished that he had grown to care for her more due to the fact he was rather caring when she was fifteen. Now at the age of 23, there was no way that Commodore Norrington would look her way. Unless there was something that he was buried deep down inside. Of course, she hadn't been adamant about how much she cared for him, so perhaps it was her fault.
Elizabeth got into the carriage with her father's help before their father got into the carriage. She looked over her shoulder at Will as they began to move away from their home.
Rose gripped her fan tightly in her hands as she forced her feelings down once again taking a soft breath she closed her eyes again and tightened her grip even more. She couldn't allow herself to get so involved in the whole thing with Elizabeth and James. But she knew that she needed to get some sort of answer from James to get some sort of closure. The question was, was today the day that she got her answer?

This is the end of Chapter 1. I hope that you guys liked this chapter more. I kind of made Rose admit her feelings for James to her father. To kind of make her… what's the word… a little bit of a stronger female character. Please leave a review and let me know what you think. I know that it will probably take me a little bit to write out these chapters properly to make Rose a more proper character that you all will love. Reviews keep me going and if there is anything that you would like to see for Book 2 while I'm fixing Book 1. Please let me know. Ideas kind of help me out quite a bit. Perhaps more than I'll ever admit. I am going to make sure to add some extra scenes as I write out each one of these chapters again. Hopefully this time they'll flow a bit better and I won't get reviewers who hate on me for writing a pirates story. I'm hoping that this is better than the second rewrite. I promise there will be more added scenes to make it longer and a bit better. Hopefully. Until next time.
