Authoress Note: Welcome to Chapter 2 of Someone Like You. Thank you to those who have left reviews for this story. It does mean a lot to me. I apologize if there are any errors. I try to catch them when I do my two read-overs and sometimes it doesn't always work out the way that it is supposed to. I do have editing programs to help me along the way and even then sometimes they fail. I hope that you guys enjoy this next chapter. I'm going to try my best to make this story slightly a bit longer if I can. I'm going to be adding some extra scenes into each chapter to help make the chapters not only longer but add new things into the mix. I hope that it ends up working out in the end. Without further ado Chapter 2. Enjoy!
Chapter 2
Rose bit her lip softly as she fanned herself with the pale green fan that her father had gotten to go with her dress. Her eyes locked on the front of the fort. Her breathing was rather shallow as she stood there watching the glorious ceremony that was held for James. Her heart pounded in her chest as she thought of this might be the time that he chose a wife, and exactly who he would choose. Honestly, she wouldn't blame James for wanting her younger sister with how wonderfully she had grown up thanks to her help, but it was probably her disregard for the rules that made her kind of appealing to anyone.
"Two paces, march!"
The soldiers divided into two columns, obeying the order.
"About face!"
The soldiers turned towards each other.
"Present arms!"
The soldiers obeyed the orders.
James Norrington came out into view dressed in fine naval clothing that any woman would love to see their husband or sons in.
Rose bit her lower lip softly as she watched him move with ease down the two columns of soldiers and moved towards where her father waited for him. She fanned her face softly trying to cool down. Sweat beaded on her forehead as she watched. This gown was going to be her death if she didn't get out of it soon. Perhaps next time her father wanted to go shopping for a gown, she should go with him to help pick out some better gowns that wouldn't kill either one of them.
With choreographed precision, her father removed the sword and scabbard from its case and presented it to him in full dress.
James accepted the sword, executing a flourishing salute, first at Governor Swann, then to the officers, and finally the audience, that assembled beneath the hot glaring sun that was a discomfort to those underneath the beating heat.
Rose came over to her sister slowly taking in the sight of her 20-year-old sister. She kept light on her feet as she came closer to her sister.
Elizabeth winced, discreetly trying to adjust the corset through the material of her dress trying to hide her discomfort.
"You look terrible… did they tighten it too much?" She questioned softly, knowing the look on her sister far too well. It was the look that she too had upon her face. The corsets were too tight sucking the air from their lungs.
Elizabeth looked over at her sister, fanning herself weakly as she leaned against a pillar trying to keep herself upright.
Rose touched her sister's cheek softly. "You should try to find a place to sit down and try to catch…"
James came over to the two women, a small smile on his face that was more forced than what his normal smile was. "May I have a moment?" He asked Elizabeth to extend his arm to her.
Elizabeth eyed her sister seeing the look of hurt. She carefully took his arm and he led her away from her sister. She was worried about what her sister would think when the day was through. She didn't want to be the reason for her sister's unhappiness.
Rose looked down sadly, tears stinging the back of her eyes. She couldn't bring herself to cry. She knew that this was most likely and proper of Elizabeth being the best choice for James, and that was what hurt the most. She knew something that her father didn't know, Elizabeth didn't like James as she did. She was more interested in the strapping lad that they had saved from the water 8 years prior. Perhaps she should've accepted the engagement to Cutler Beckett. Perhaps her heart wouldn't feel like it was being torn from her chest with a match that wasn't made in heaven.
Her head shot up when she heard James yelling for her sister. She quickly picked up the skirts of her dress and rushed elegantly to where James had taken her sister. She saw him on top of the parapet preparing to dive into the water below. "Commodore?" Her brows were furrowed when she noticed that her sister was nowhere in sight. What happened to her sister? Her heart rammed in her chest in worry. Her brain was thinking of all the outcomes that could've happened. Did she fall into the ocean below due to the tightness of her corset?
Lieutenant Gillette grabbed his arm. "The rocks, sir! It's a miracle she missed them!"
James shook his arm off looking down. He jumped down looking at Rose with a fleeting caring gaze before running down towards the docks to get Elizabeth safely back to her family and back to him.
Rose looked over the parapet and saw the rippling waves. She closed her eyes, her face paling. She could only hope that the heaviness of the dress wouldn't sink her to the bottom of the Caribbean. She hoped that by any chance of luck her sister would be saved. She knew that she wouldn't be able to remove the gown she wore and jumped into the warm waters below to save her from the death that she could end up in. She could only hope that Elizabeth wouldn't end up like their mother, dead in the oceans.
"Don't worry, miss." Lieutenant Gillette said, looking over at Rose. "We'll bring your sister back to safety." He knew that the young woman had been through a lot with what had happened to her mother and knowing that Elizabeth also facing the same fate, wasn't good for the eldest Swann daughter.
Rose weakly nodded her head only in hopes that Gillette was right. She turned on her heels to move quickly, picking up her skirts, meeting up with her father as quickly and possible as a lady could, and being dressed in such a restricting breathing corset. "Father…" She said softly, her voice coming out fairly breathlessly.
Governor Swann turned his head seeing his eldest come towards him. "Rose…"
"It's Elizabeth... Commodore Norrington went to the docks…"
Governor Swann offered his arm and they quickly went towards the dock in hopes to find Elizabeth safe and sound. He couldn't lose anyone else in his family. He knew that he and Rose couldn't handle another death on their hands. It took forever for Rose to come so far with the death of her mother. She hardly spoke words to anyone after his wife's death. He couldn't go through that again.
They made it down to the dock at the same time as James pulled his sword on the man who was standing over Elizabeth, who was missing most of her clothes.
Rose's eyes went wide when she saw that Elizabeth's corset was also gone besides her gown. She let out a soft breath of relief knowing that her sister was alive and well, even though she was soaked to the bone from her fall into the ocean. She knew that whoever saved her would be forever in their debt.
The man got up to his feet dressed in some ragged clothes that could easily pinpoint him as a merchant sailor or even worse in Rose's mind Pirate. Which sent a shudder through the dirty blonde-haired noble.
"Elizabeth! Are you all right?" Their father questioned as he stripped his jacket off and slipped it around her shoulders. He rubbed Elizabeth's arms moving her closer to her older sister, who could comfort her a bit better than he could. He was thankful that she was safe and sound.
"Rose…" Elizabeth said as she tried to snuggle up to her older sister who slowly passed her carefully to her father. Elizabeth's head went to her sister's shoulder curling up even closer to her sister. She gripped her sister's hand tightly in her two shaking hands.
Rose looked on in concern hoping that James wouldn't kill Elizabeth's rescuer. She moved carefully as her sister was busy telling her father that she was fine. Rose's hand carefully went to James' arm and gripped it softly. "Commodore Norrington, do you intend to kill Elizabeth's rescuer?" She questioned softly her blue eyes meeting with his green eyes. She knew that James wasn't having an easy time with this.
James looked at Jack, his eyes narrowed as he kept his blade under Jack's chin. He would remove it if he didn't pose a threat to anyone.
Jack nodded as best he could with a blade beneath his chin. He didn't want to move his head the wrong way and nick himself with the blade.
James sheathed his sword and then extended his hand. "I believe thanks are in order."
Rose bit her lower lip knowing that this was a step in the right direction. She could only hope that James would allow him to leave. She could only hope that Jack wasn't a bad man that would cause a danger to everyone in Port Royal. Her breathing was shallow at best as she watched the two men converse with each other.
Jack took James' hand gingerly before shaking it.
James then suddenly tightened his grip and yanked Jack's arm towards him before tearing back the sleeve of his shirt exposing a brand on his inner wrist. "Had a brush-up with East India
Trading Company, did you ... pirate? "
Rose slowly backed away a little, keeping herself behind James as he moved in front of Rose slightly to protect her. She knew that a pirate in Port Royal was not a good sign whatsoever.
A half of a dozen pistols were aimed at Jack.
Jack stood there calmly not moving.
"Keep your guns on him, men. Gillette, fetch some irons." James then noticed something else below the pirate brand which was a tattoo of a bird in flight across the water. "Well, well... Jack Sparrow, isn't it?" He questioned his brow raising.
"Captain Jack Sparrow. If you please." Jack said, looking at James, not liking the idea that he didn't call him Captain.
James looked out at the bay and didn't see any ship at the docks. "I don't see your ship - Captain."
"He said he'd come to commandeer one," Murtogg said, looking at their boss.
"I told you he was telling the truth," Mullroy said to Murtogg. Then he held out Jack's pistol and belt. "These are his, sir."
James took the pistol and examined it. "Extra powder, but no additional shot."
Jack shrugged his shoulders, not bothered that this man before him was thinking that he was a terrible pirate only having extra powder but no extra shots for the gun.
James unhooked the compass from the belt and opened it. He frowned at the reading. He moved the compass this way and kept it parallel to the ground and it kept pointing behind him. "It doesn't bear true."
Jack looked away, a bit embarrassed.
James returned the compass to the belt. He then drew the sword half from the scabbard. "I half-expected it to be made of wood." He slid it back into the scabbard before handing it to Mullroy. "Taking stock: you've got a pistol with only one shot, a compass that doesn't point north ... and no ship. You are without a doubt the worst pirate I have ever heard of." James said as his lips quirked a bit. He never thought that he would see the day that he would come across a pirate that was so terrible that it made his job so easy for him. But he had a point to prove to his father, ridding the ocean of as many pirates as he possibly could to make up for what had happened when he was a mere child being saved by a pirate nonetheless.
"Ah, but you have heard of me." Jack pointed out with a cheeky grin.
Rose pursed her lips together as she listened to everything.
Gillette returned with some shackles and approached Jack.
"Carefully, lieutenant."
Rose slowly went forward and looked at James pleading with him. She knew that this was something that Elizabeth would have wanted to at least protect the man that saved her from the depths of the sea. "Commodore, I must protest. Pirate or not, this man saved my sister's life." She was betraying what she felt in her own heart. She knew that regardless if this man had saved Elizabeth's life it would hopefully undo the life that Jack had lived.
James looked over at Rose. His brows slightly furrowed wondering why Rose was willing to protect a pirate. "One good deed is not enough to redeem a man of a lifetime of wickedness."
Gillette snapped the manacles closed on Jack's wrists.
"But it seems to be enough to condemn him." Jack pointed out looking over at the blonde-haired woman that stood behind James.
James smirked as he heard Jack willingly admitting that. "Indeed." Seeing that Jack was now in chains safely, he turned to his men, nodding his head alerting them to move the pirate away from the dock and to the prison.
All but one stowed their weapons and two stepped forward to grab Jack and take him away.
"Finally." Jack quickly lightning wrapped his manacle chain around Rose's throat causing her to gasp. Her breath came out in more of a wheeze due to how tight her gown was just as much as Elizbeth's was even though she had more practice in wearing tight dresses.
Elizabeth let out a shriek of shock. Her brown eyes were wide scared of what would happen to Rose if anyone tried to fire their muskets they would easily hurt her sister with how close she was to Jack. Her heart rammed in her chest in hopes that Jack wouldn't have harm come to her sister. But wishing on that was something that a fool would do.
Pistols were quickly drawn again, but he was now using Rose as a shield. Meaning if they tried to shoot Jack, they could very well hurt Rose. And that was one thing that no one wanted that to happen to one of the Governor's daughters.
James raised his hand cautioning his men. He couldn't afford to have Rose hurt due to one little mistake. He was going to blame himself if anything happened to her. He already blamed himself due to Rose being held hostage. He should've protected her better than he had.
Jack slowly backed away towards the land. "Commodore Norrington ... my pistol and belt, please."
James hesitated and saw the fear in Rose's eyes and balled his fists and frustration. He couldn't believe that this happened after he had promised her eight years ago he would protect her, and at that moment he wasn't even protecting her.
"Commodore!" Jack said his lips curled some as he tightened his hold on Rose. He was going to make sure that she didn't escape his grasp easily.
Mullroy slowly handed the pistol and belt to James.
James held them out to Jack waiting for him to take them and release Rose from his hold.
"Rose… it is Rose?" Jack questioned his brown eyes, lighting up as he looked at the blonde-haired blue-eyed woman.
Rose narrowed her eyes slightly in anger as she looked up at Jack. "Miss Swann." She bit out not liking how Jack was holding her captive and probably frightening her father that it would make his heart give out.
"Miss Swann, if you'll be so kind?"
She swallowed the lump in her throat and took the belt and pistol from James.
Jack is quicker than she was and took the pistol from her. He jerked around her so she was facing him belly to belly. "Now, if you'll be very kind?"
She figured out what he wanted. "You are disgraceful." She stated in anger.
"I saved your sister's life; now you've saved mine. We're square." Jack mused with a smirk on his lips.
She finished putting his belt on him.
Jack turned her again and then backed up until he bumped against the cargo gantry. "Gentlemen ... m'ladies ... you will always remember this as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow." He then shoved Rose, before grabbing a rope and pulling free a belaying pin, causing a counterweight to drop. He is lifted to the middle of the gantry, where he grabs a second rope being flung away from everyone.
Pistols began to fire and miss as Jack swung, out, out, out and away from and around the gantry.
James held his shot with careful aim; he tracked Jack's trajectory. He would not allow himself to miss the shot. He wanted that pirate dead and that was what he was going to do.
Jack dropped from the rope as James fired. His shot tore the rope and Jack plummeted past one of the gantry's lines. He snapped the length of the manacle chain over the line and grabbed a hold of the far loop.
Rose shakily got up to her feet puffing in frustration due to lack of oxygen due to the corset she wore. Her cheeks pale from being in such a tight hold and being pushed sharply into everyone didn't help her in any way.
"On his heels! Gillette, bring a squad down from the fort!" James moved to Rose and looked her over with concern. "Rose, are you -"
"Yes, James I'm alright… Go capture him…" She pleaded with him. She didn't want him to stick around with her if that meant catching the pirate that risked her life by grabbing her and pulling her into the range of fire.
James nodded his head and moved quickly after his men.
Elizabeth rushed up to her sister and pulled her into a hug. "You're positively mad." She said softly as tears came to her eyes. She was so worried that Jack would've gotten her sister killed and that wouldn't have been good for anyone that was involved.
Rose let out a soft weak laugh shaking her head lightly. She knew that she was in a lot of danger, she could only hope that James would bring Jack to justice for what he had done. She honestly didn't mind the idea of Jack being hung on the gallows for what he had done to her.
Governor Swann moved forward and draped his coat around his youngest. "Here, dear ... you should wear this." He said softly knowing that the youngest daughter needed warmth since she was still very much drenched head to toe.
Elizabeth shivered, finding that she was cold. She gazed out on the bay where a thick fog began moving across the top of the water. She carefully took his jacket. "Thank you, Father ... and let that be the last of your fashion advice, please." She said as she accepted his embrace of comfort.
Rose let out a soft weak laugh. "Well, I'll accept it as long as it doesn't restrict my breathing so much." She admitted softly as her hand went to her abdomen trying to keep herself upright and breathing.
Governor Swann looked at both his daughters and nodded his head softly. He knew that he almost lost both of them in separate ways and he wasn't about to risk them both with death in a bad fashion. "Yes, I think I will leave it to the maids to help pick out the dresses from now on."
Rose looked over at her father as he wrapped his arm around her to keep her steady on her feet. "Yes, or just have one of us go to pick out our gowns for important occasions."
Elizabeth nodded her head in agreement. "I have to agree with that." She said with a smile as the three of them walked back to where the carriage was waiting for them to take them home. Home where they would be safe from Pirates and any other dangers that would mean them harm.
But no one knew that dangers were coming right to their border in a matter of time.

This is the end of Chapter 2. I hope that you guys enjoyed this chapter. I know there is quite a bit going on in this chapter. But I hope that you guys enjoyed the extra bit that I added to this for the second chapter. I'm kind of making her the more protective sister, but now I'm having her have a reason to hate Jack. She was just threatened by him. So that will make the romantic idea of Jack with Rose impossible to do. Which I've just kind of learned to accept. But I promise you there is a good reason for them not being together. Please leave a review and let me know what you think. Reviews keep me going with writing. I can't wait to post more of this new and improved story even though it might take me longer to write this out if I come up with a block. Hopefully, fingers crossed I won't have writer's block as I write this up. Since writer's block would suck right now if I got it. Plus this is a nine-page chapter. Which I have to admit is fairly long with how much I have written for this chapter. Hopefully, I will update next week with a brand new chapter for everyone to enjoy. It's just going to take some time to make the chapters good. Hopefully, it will all turn out well. Until next time.
