Danny's POV
I walk over to Beth to hand her a bottle of milk for Judith. Offering to do this for her was the best decision. There's no chance of running out of formula or having to water it down to make it last longer. Judith can get everything she needs to keep her healthy. I will keep doing it until I'm physically not able to anymore.
"Danny?" I turn to Herschel as he calls my name. He's walking towards me with a look that makes me worry. It's of concern. "Can I talk you please?"
"Sure". He starts walking away from everyone, which makes me worry even more, he doesn't want people to hear him. I follow after him until he stops in the far corner of the cell block.
"There's nothing to worry about just yet but I want to be prepared, I don't want to wait until it gets bad." He looks at someone over my shoulder, I turn my head slightly to see Daryl stood on the other end of the room, filling the doorway with his body. He doesn't attempt to come closer but he's staring straight at us. "We need to get Antibiotics for Daryl's arm. If it turns bad then we could be in trouble especially if the Governor turns up".
"Okay, then I'll go out and get some". I do not want anything to happen to him.
"I don't think you should go, but I wanted to tell you so a small group can go out."
I shake my head, there's no way I'll stay here, I'll take Glenn and Michonne. We can be back before dark.
"I'll sort it, thanks".
I walk towards Daryl who is still stood there looking extremely suspicious of me.
He nods his head at Herschel, "What did he want?"
"We have to go outside of the prison."
"No! We talked about this we can't do runs, it's too risky".
"You need antibiotics and if we don't get them and you get sick then we'll be screwed. We're going out and getting some".
He lets out a very sarcastic breathy laugh, "There ain't nothin' wrong with me, we don't need to take the risk for somethin' that probably won't happen".
"You can't stop me and I know you know that. Pretty much everyone will agree with me on this."
He sighs with a slight shake of his head. "Okay, but we plan the trip out and we don't take a big group."
I grab his hand as he starts to walk away. "Ah, no. You aren't comin'".
"The fuck I ain't".
"We need people here too." He doesn't look like he's going to relent so I play a card that I have, a brand new card. "We can't leave Riley here without one of us".
He squints at me, "And you could stay here with him".
"Nope, I said it first. You won't win this argument. I'm sorry".
He gives in with defeated nod of the head, which completely surprises me. I expected a whole thing out of it. Maybe his arm is hurting a lot more than he's showing.
"Who are ya takin'?"
"Michonne and Glenn".
"And Merle". I open my mouth but he stops me. "No, that's the deal. You take Merle".
I pull my bottom lip between my teeth, him and I haven't spoken since I shouted at him. He won't even look at me. I really think I hurt him but he was kind of a jerk.
"Fine". I agree. "But we go soon, suns only just come up so it'll give us the day".
Daryl asked Merle, who agreed. I asked Michonne and she didn't need much of a reason to say yes. I think she just wants to get out here. Glenn said yes to but I had to convince Maggie not to come along, told her the smaller the group the better. We didn't want to make too much of a deal out there as we need to go unnoticed.
Maggie and Glenn did their goodbyes and the other two are sat waiting in the truck, ready to go. I'm the one holding up this scavenge party. Daryl is holding my hand and he's refusing to let go.
"You see any signs of people you abort and come back. Ya don't risk ya life for me. If ya ain't back by nightfall, I come lookin'. Ya hear me?"
"I do, we'll be careful. I promise".
He pulls me in by my hand and wraps his other arm around me. The hug is tight like he really doesn't want to let go but then Merle toots the car horn and leans out his window.
"Let's go short stuff. Times wastin'".
Daryl lets me go after a quick tightening of his arms. He pushes me to arms length away, "I love you". Merle groans when he hears Daryl say those three words but I ignore him.
"I love you to". I move away from him a little reluctantly and climb into the backseat, over his shoulder I can see Sophia standing there with Riley. It makes my gut clench at the idea of leaving him here but he's with Daryl and I guess I have to go out without him at some point. Might as well rip that band aid off sooner rather than later.
As Merle starts driving the car out I watch Daryl go back to Sophia and take Riley from her. That image will stay in my head for a very long time. When they're finally out of my sight I spare Glenn a glance to see him already looking at me.
"You gonna be okay?"
"I'll be fine, he's with Daryl". I'm a very new first time mum, I'm gonna worry a lot when it comes to Riley because everything is new to me.
"Safest person alive" Glenn chuckles, and he's not wrong.
"Couldn't agree more".
Michonne unfolds the map Daryl gave her and starts looking at it. Daryl picked a town that isn't too far away from here but also isn't too close to Woodbury. It has a small hospital in it which granted, hospitals are probably places that a lot of people have already raided but it can't hurt to try, there's bound to be something there. We won't stop looking until we find something.
As Merle pulls into the car park I'm a little thrown off by the amount of dead bodies in it, but then again, I probably shouldn't be. Hospitals were some of the first places to fall because that's where the bodies were transported when they thought they were dead only for them to reanimate inside. It's making me a little sceptic about going inside, this place is huge and has hundreds of rooms. There could be anything inside.
When we reach the doors I peer through the glass to try and see inside and my god, it's almost as bad as the warehouse in there. Hospitals were always bright but I'm guessing it was just because of all the fluorescent lights it used to have. Gave it a false sense of a light and airy place but in actual fact it was just the lights.
The only patch of light in the hallway I can see down is coming from this door, and it barely lights it up.
I turn my back on the door to look at the three of them. "Anyone got a plan?"
"You go with the Samurai", He jerks is head at Michonne like it wasn't obvious who he was talking about. "I'll go with Glenn".
Glenn raises his eyebrows at me in surprise but I just shrug at him. Wasn't expecting that pairing. "Okay, but shouldn't we just stick together. I mean it'll only have one pharmacy inside, right?"
Glenn nods but Merle scrunches his nose. "And there ain't any guarantee that there'll be anythin' left in there. We gotta check every place we can".
I ignore the tone he takes with me and grab the door handle. "I'm scared of the dark by the way". I direct that at Michonne who frowns at me in response but she doesn't say anything. Probably nothing she can say.
I tap my bat on the door to see if anything appears out of the darkness and after waiting in complete silence for a few minutes I finally open the door. As soon as I'm through I pull my torch out of my side pocket and turn it on, instantly scanning it around every dark patch in here.
"Want me to go in front?" Michonne whispers to me?
Won't decline that offer. "Yep".
I don't see it but I know that she one hundred percent rolled her eyes at me.
As we walk down the hallway I cast a look over my shoulder to see Merle and Glenn disappearing in the opposite direction. I don't like things being this tense, this awkward between me and Merle. It doesn't feel right. He's not joking around, or even bantering or making some smart arse remark he's just unnaturally quiet.
We move through the hospital, room by room, in silence until I can't take the silence any more. "Can I ask you a question?"
For a second I don't think she's going to answer but when she closes the door behind us to signal we've checked the room she looks over at me. "Only if I can ask you one in return?"
I shrug one shoulder at her, fine by me. "Deal. Why have you stayed with us. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad you have but you don't seem the type that really needs to have people around her".
She sighs gently thinking I can't hear her. "I was better off on my own, people just make things harder", She pauses as she opens another door and lets me swing my torch around the dark corners. "But I met Andrea and I realised I was wrong, it was nice not being alone anymore but I couldn't stay at Woodbury and she couldn't leave".
I wait for her to continue but she doesn't, I think she's trying to say she couldn't be alone after Andrea so she stayed so she wouldn't be but she doesn't say it and I don't think she will ever actually say it. She seems a little proud, a little standoffish. Doesn't like to show emotions.
"What's your question for me?"
She stops in her tracks and fully turns around to look at me. "Why?" Pretty broad question.
"I don..."
"Why did you have a baby?"
Her question stuns me but she continues to stare at me waiting for me to answer.
"I...We didn't plan on it. It was an accident but I don't regret one second of it.", I don't and I never will. "I was scared to start with, thought there was no way we could do it but Daryl helped me through it and made me believe that we could do it because we have each other. Riley means the world to me and I will do everything I possibly can to make sure he gets the chance to grow up."
I hear the growl and when I shine my torch behind Michonne I see the three Walkers that are stumbling towards us. They stop Michonne from saying anything.
I stuff the antibiotics into my bag and zip it up. "We better get back".
We hurry through the corridors, not even bothering to be quiet or to check any of the dark corners. Think I'm a little less afraid of this place now I know we're getting out of here.
When we reach the front doors Michonne suddenly stops and pushes me back against the wall. She doesn't need to tell me what's wrong because I can hear the mumbled voices myself. I peer around the wall and what I see makes my heart sink. Merle and Glenn are on their knees, their weapons are on the floor in front of them and stood before them is a bunch of heavily armed men.
"The governor", she whispers to me. I look at the man stood front and centre, the one that's talking. He doesn't have his weapon in his hand, it's remained holstered but he knows he doesn't need it. The men around him have enough fire power between them to make this a death sentence.
I pull out my gun but before I've barely been able to move an inch Michonne latches onto my arm.
"Don't".
But it's not her words that stop me, it's Merle's hand that he has behind his back. He has his palm facing me and then he closes and sort of moves it towards me. Don't come out, stay hidden. That's what he's telling me to do and I hate it.
Michonne yanks me back behind the wall, "We have to hide, they will come and look for us".
"Merle won't tell them we're here. He'll say they're alone".
"It won't matter, they won't trust him without checking for themselves. Come on".
She doesn't let go of my arm as we jog back down the hallway, this time in the pitch black as I can't put my torch on now.
After a few turns in this place she pushes open a door and pushes me inside just as we hear the voices echoing down the hall. We move behind the door which Michonne leaves open slightly, hoping to convince the men that we won't be hidden in an open room.
"You believe 'em?" One guy says from outside the door.
"Ain't no-one dumb enough to hide in this place. Gives me the creeps just walking through it".
"Let's go. We can say we checked everywhere".
After a few seconds I can hear the footsteps walking away. We hang in here for another minute or so before I risk it and peer around the door. They're gone.
We jog down the hall, keeping close to the wall, trying to stay in the shadows. When we reach the front doors again our truck is pulling out of the carpark and Merle and Glenn are gone.
Shit.
