Fourteen Years Later..
Queens, New York
Peter
Mr. Stark's Lexus rolled to a slow stop.
Right at the front entrance of my apartment.
"Thanks, Happy. We can take it from here." Mr. Stark said.
"Alright. I'll keep the car running." Happy promised.
Mr. Stark helped me get my luggage out of the back. It was just a backpack and roller suitcase that I could've carried out by myself.
But out of all nights, I desperately didn't want to go into my apartment alone.
Mr. Stark and I went into the lobby and up the elevator.
My legs felt like lead the entire way.
The elevator dinged eerily once we reached the right floor.
I hesitated for a second before walking out.
Mr. Stark laid a hand on my shoulder.
"Come on, kid. We can't wait here all night."
I nodded shakily.
I had to break some earth-shattering news to my Aunt May. The things that I had learned in Siberia changed so much. It changed how I saw the Avengers, how I saw myself, and even my relationship with May.
I wasn't related to her by blood. I was adopted. But there were gaps in my story. Questions that needed answering.
With a shaky fist, I knocked on the door.
May answered quickly.
"Peter!" she beamed at me and pulled me in for a hug. I could barely grasp her.
"What's wrong?" she asked when she took a step back.
Her eyes darted between my limp posture and Mr. Stark's serious expression.
"We need to have a private discussion with you, Ms. Parker." Mr. Stark said.
All the flirt and charm he had from his first visit was gone.
"Okay." May said uneasily.
She led us to the living room.
Mr. Stark was quick to take our only armchair. That meant that I shared the couch with May. I just couldn't look her in the eye right now.
Mr. Stark cleared his throat.
"So Peter, you wanna start us off?"
I shook my head.
"I can't."
"Did something happen?" May asked. "Did Peter do something wrong?"
"No." I said.
"Nothing that was his fault." Mr. Stark said vaguely.
I gave him a pleading look. I couldn't do this. He shook his head, giving me no choice but to speak.
"Six months ago….I-I….." I took a deep breath. "The trip to Europe wasn't an internship trip."
May gave me a confused look.
"I'm not following."
I looked to Mr. Stark for help. Instead, he gave me a nod. He wanted me to lead this conversation myself. To be the man.
"I am Spider-Man." I mumbled.
"What?" Aunt May asked.
"I am Spider-Man." I said barely loud enough to hear.
Aunt May's eyes jerked between me and Tony.
She gave a nervous laugh. She was in denial. I could see it in her face.
"This is a joke, right? Please tell me this is a joke. Peter,"
I unzipped my suitcase and pulled out the new suit, letting it dangle from my hands. I knew Mr. Stark would be wanting it back soon.
"No, Aunt May. And I'm sorry."
Her face fell hard. I had hurt her and I was going to hurt her some more.
"I'm so sorry."
She pressed her hand to her mouth.
"But there's more." Mr. Stark said. "And this is where I come in."
We spilled everything to her.
The spider bite, the fight in Leipzig, going to the Raft.
From the moment I revealed that I would swing around the city, risking my life, May gripped onto the arm of the sofa until her knuckles were white.
It was so much to take in.
I had literally gone to an airport and fought super soldiers and international criminals. Later, I went to a prison and helped hack into security software.
And then I went to a deserted terrorist base.
Only now had I realized how dangerous it all was. But that was nothing compared to what I was about to tell her.
"And then," Mr. Stark sighed heavily. The Sokovia Accords situation had drained him. That and fighting against Captain America.
"Peter went with Romanoff and Barnes to a different level of the base. They found an old computer program of Arnim Zola. Peter was in Zola's database."
Aunt May held out a hand.
"Stop." she gasped. "I know where this is going. He told you that you were found in a lab. He told you that me and your aunts and uncles were SHIELD agents."
May never specified whether it was Richard and Gwen or Ben and Mary Jane who were my parents.
All my life, it had always been my parents, aunt, and uncle.
Never aunts and uncles.
Aunt May's story was becoming undone.
"You said Aunts and Uncles that time." I said, my voice breaking.
Her face paled.
"Peter, I-"
"It's okay, May." I held her hand. "Zola told us more than that."
Then I realized what I had to tell her. I wanted to take back my promise that it was okay.
Thankfully, Mr. Stark took up the conversation for me.
"Ms. Parker, your brothers and sister-in-laws weren't in a car accident." He paused. "They were assassinated by the Winter Soldier."
May almost stopped breathing.
"And you met him?" she said. "You met the man that…."
"That man is also Peter's biological father." Mr. Stark said quickly.
With wide eyes, she stared at me in shock. I felt my eyes getting watery.
I had hurt Mr. Stark and Aunt May by being the son of a killer.
"And…his mother?" May asked. "What about her?"
"She's Natasha Romanoff, May." I said.
A jolt of worry went through me when I realized that I might've ruined our relationship. With a final shudder, her muscles relaxed slightly. But she didn't respond.
"May?" I asked.
"Thank you. Mr. Stark. For bringing him here safely." she said without feeling. "I'm sure you'll be very busy with the Sokovia Accords. Peter, will you show him out?"
Mr. Stark was the first to stand up.
I followed him into the hallway outside our apartment.
He glanced back inside.
"As far as shocking revelations go, she sure did handle it well."
I shook my head. "She's gonna be a mess for a while."
"True." he nodded.
I took a step back inside.
"I'll go get the suit for you."
"What for?"
I gave him a weird look. "What?"
"It's yours now." Mr. Stark said. "Keep it."
That meant instead of running around in sweatpants, I could patrol New York in a quality-grade, tricked-out suit designed by Tony Stark himself. This was definitely an upgrade.
"Wow. Thank you, Mr. Stark."
"No problem, kid. I'll see you soon."
He turned around.
"Wait," I called.
He glanced back at me.
"What do I do now?" I asked. "Steve, Natasha, and Bucky disappeared. And I can't sign the Accords."
He gave a small smile.
"Here's the thing, kid. You're in a fine legal gray area. You're an anonymous vigilante, so you only operate by your rules."
And Aunt May's rules. I thought.
"You go out and do the same thing you've always done, you'll attract more attention. But nobody can do anything about it. But somewhere out there will be a former Red Room agent watching the news and she'll see you in action."
That was exciting. I could still be Spider-Man, but this time, the Avengers and my parents would be watching.
"Oh, and if you need anything, text Happy."
He patted me on the back and with that, he left.
I wasn't in much of a hurry to go back inside. After a few minutes, I took a deep breath and went into my apartment.
Aunt May was on the couch with an old photo album opened on her lap.
When she saw me come in, she set it to the side.
"Hey." I said awkwardly.
She forced a smile. "Hi."
May had tissues out. There were already a few rolled up into wet balls on the coffee table.
I didn't know what else to do. I went into the kitchen to grab a muffin. I hadn't eaten in awhile.
I just wanted to wait until the shock wore off to talk about it with her.
So I sat down at the table and pulled out my phone.
My best friend, Ned, had sent me a text around the same time that I was in Siberia, talking to evil computer programs and stopping war criminals.
How's the trip going?
It went from good to bad to good again, then to complete insanity. But I didn't tell him that.
It was good. Just got home.
"Everything makes sense now."
I looked over in May's direction.
"What?"
She turned to face me. Her eyes were red.
"Everything makes sense now. How we found you, their deaths, Rumlow's denial of Natasha's story about Hydra." She sniffed. "They did a good job at covering up everything."
"Brock Rumlow, the guy in the news?"
Brock Rumlow was a former SHIELD agent who also worked for Hydra. After SHIELD was destroyed, he became a mercenary assassin. He was the guy that triggered the bomb in Lagos last week.
I walked over to Aunt May. I now saw the photos she had been looking at.
It was a group photo of Ben, Mary Jane, Richard and Gwen, beaming at the camera. What did they do that made Hydra come after them?
"We found you hooked up to all these IVs and fluids. One of the scientists kept saying how you were going to be a new kind of soldier."
My eyes watered again. It hurt to find out all these things from my past. But it was like a band-aid that needed to come off.
I took in a breath.
"Zola said that they were going to terminate me….They said I was a failed experiment."
She laid a hand on my face.
"Peter, if you're anything at all, you're not a failed experiment."
She smiled.
"Being dosed with radiation like that should've killed you. But your genes saved you."
I needed to remember that I was more than what those bad guys saw me as. After all, I had thought of myself as a semi-average person before I found out that I was experimented on. I could still do that, right?
I tried to smile back.
"I've got some pretty cool abilities now."
We both chuckled.
"But May, why didn't you tell me?"
Her expression got more serious.
"Those people wanted immediate results. When they didn't show up in you, they were ready to give up. But myself and some of my higher-ups believed that one that you would get the traits that they were looking for. If word got out that there was a baby with super soldier genes, people would come looking." she paused. "People…would even kill to find another way to create super soldiers. I wanted to protect you, so Nick Fury helped get some papers together, proving that I was your relative and legal guardian. Others helped us get settled. Clint Barton, the guy you might've met at the airport helped us move into our first apartment."
"I knocked him out." I admitted.
I kind of felt bad for doing that now. Hawkeye was Natasha's best friend. Then again, she fought him at the airport too.
She shrugged.
"I don't think he took it personally."
That was true. Everyone was pulling their punches at the battle.
"And I knew so little about your past. I didn't want to tell you what I knew because I thought you would see yourself in a bad light."
Her old, familiar smile came back.
"You know I'm proud of you, right? Whether you're Spider-Man, or not. Whether you're Ben's kid or someone else's."
I smiled.
"I know, Aunt May."
I never knew how much May had sacrificed for me. She gave up her job and fourteen years to raise and take care of me.
I was so much more grateful for her now.
I wrapped my arms around her.
"I love you."
She squeezed me tighter.
"I love you too."
Hi guys! Thanks for reading! And thank you for all the new follows and favs.
One reader was wondering how Bucky still remembered Peter in the Epilogue of Part 1. That's going to be explained in Part 3.
Peter is dealing with some guilt in this chapter because Bucky's his father. I'm not sure if he's going to learn that he's not responsible for his parents' choices in this story or not.
A few people have posted suggestions about where the story goes and all I can say is that you'll have to wait until that chapter or chapters come out. I don't want to spoil too much!
