Story information
First off sorry that this chapter took a little longer to write (had to make some choices about progression) but note to worry, I decided to start the story proper meaning that Aris will be introduced to more of the magical world. Note that this chapter is still a little bit more of character development and some world building, If people want more of what happens in this chapter I will do it just let me know and I can edit it in (or do a flash back chapter) regardless this chapter focuses more on the hospital and areas within it that most don't know(unless you are a lore hunter or really remember the books) hope you enjoy it :)
Some months had past since Aris's fateful checkup. A lot had changed sense then. Aris had gotten confirmation that he was half- Gorgon, as well as starting to learn about his abilities. Learned that he had a large healthy magic core, and what a magic core was. He was given a few books that covered varying topics about recent wizard history, like the last two wars, notable achievements of wizards and witches, how to spot common illness, as well as a book all about a sport called Quiditch. All of which were greatly appreciated by Aris, even the one about Quiditch, which Aris learned was a sport people played on flying brooms, such a sport was insane to Aris, interesting and amazing but still insane.
The most insane of changes though came in two parts. Changes that drastically changed how Aris saw the world, even more so than the new knowledge he acquired from his books.
First was the fact he now had a temporary home in the hospital. He now lived on the fourth floor, in the Janus Thickey Ward. A permanent place for people who suffered from currently incurable damages. Aris hadn't met any of the residents, told that it was too dangerous or only family and staff was allowed. He was here because it was the only place they had he could stay while they studied his mark as well as himself. That point was of great turmoil to Aris. While he was grateful for the living conditions, because they didn't try kill him and provided three warm meals every day. Which in retrospect was a low bar clear, but still more than Aris was ever used to.
The point controversy stemmed from how he was treated. Again he wasn't harmed or anything terrible. No the problem was one of freedom and belonging. He wasn't ever let outside of the hospital, he wasn't even allowed out of his room unless he had someone escort him. He couldn't even sneak out as the door was always locked. Not to say he never left the room, he did quite often. He would leave the room about 5 times a day, too go to his tests. Test that would be anywhere from one to three hours long and on any of the floors of the building. It left him feeling like he was a prisoner, ripped of his freedoms. The worst part in Aris opinion was the way people acted towards him. He never saw the same person more than once or twice. Which lead to very similar interactions, a superficial pleasant greeting followed by a quickly growing dismissal of his existence. At first they would slowly forget that he was there, talking about him while he was in the room during the test. Soon it became a quiet routine after Aris stopped trying to ask questions about what was happening and the importance of it. He learned as most told him not to worry or he wouldn't understand, he was too young or too new to the magical world. So he would just quietly watch and listen. Worsening the feeling that he wasn't even a patient but a exotic subject, a feeling Aris hated. He hated the seemingly denial of his individuality. The worst part in Aris mind was that he knew it didn't have to be like this. When he interacted with Mr Smethwyck, he was treated as a person, he was given explanations and encouraged to ask questions. He truly enjoyed his time with healer Smethwyck however few in number his visits were. Aris had tasted how comfort felt and knew when it was absent. His life here while better in some aspects was worse in others. Freedom was traded for safety and his isolation had just swapped to a new form.
The second point of turmoil was from the conflict he had with treatment. Treatment done on his mark and his mind.
The treatment done and test ran about his mark revealed very little. The magic was mostly unknown except for the fact it was very dark in nature. The mark thankfully didn't seem be tracking or deadly. Any other information learned about it wasn't shared with Aris. Testing stopped after they had once tried to go about removing or suppressing the mark. The memory of the day it was attempted sent shivers down Aris's spine. It felt like torture, like his heart was being ripped out of his chest while fire was being poured beneath his skin. He remembered screaming and thrashing about at day. Apparently he had bitten someone in an attempt to stop the pain. Thinking back Aris would realize that was the day the staff truly switched in how they interacted with him.
The other treatment that tore apart Aris emotionally was the attempt to work on his mind. He understood that it was an attempt to regain his lost memories, or as they said locked away. If it was lost then there was nothing to do but because of his sessions with mind healers it was understood that his memory were forcible locked and hidden away. Aris hated the feeling of something digging around in his head, even if it was done with the best of intentions. Once Aris had asked if he could just unlock the memories himself. The response he got was less than hopeful.
"Well it's possible but you would have to study Occlumency and that could take years before you be at a level to try and unlock your memories. That and it would be much safer to have trained professional help you here"
He didn't refuse their help but did promise himself that he would learn Occlumency while he was at Hogwarts.
The thought of Hogwarts lead to a whole other set of concerns. The staff had told him that if he attended Hogwarts then after his first year he would no longer be required to stay here. The idea of not staying at the hospital was alluring. Aris knee he could take care of himself at the Orphanage and he would be much more free to do what he wants. The way they said if was the main source of anger for Aris. The idea that he wasn't assured a place was torture, to be told and shown an opportunity to learn more about magic and it be denied was crushing. Neither did it help that Aris hadn't seen or heard from Professor Snape at all.
Months spent in uncertainty made Aris crave an answer, without anyway to get it.
Instead of dwelling on things he couldn't change, Aris threw himself into his daily routine. Only now it was more focused on magic.
Aris practiced levitating objects around the room. Through he practice he started to get control of pushing and pulling objects. It was much easier to pull than to push, as Aris already done some types of pulling. Restricting and controlling how far and fast he was pushing and pulling was the hardest part. Over the months of practice he got better still not complete control as it required all of his focus. He hoped to showcase his talent as everyone he had seen used a stick - a wand as he leaned, to do magic. The fact he could do magic without one was of immense joy. Further elevated by the impressed faces of anyone who saw his acts.
The was one other thing Aris practiced with his magic after two months into his stay. Aris attempt to unlock the door with his magic. It was an agonizingly slow process as he no idea what to do. He stated with trying to push the door as hard as possible with his magic but it barely budged and when it did someone immediately came in to ask if something had happened. After that he tried to be more subtle. He tried focusing his magic on the door handle and then pulling it to the side, which again didn't work. He tried to push his magic into the lock which gave him some response. He felt a flash of something like his magic was acting like a extension of himself and he was pushing against a wall. The feeling as fleeting but gave Aris a goal. He focused on trying to feel the feeling again.
Aris was currently doing such, he sat in the middle of the room, eyes closed and both arms stretched out in front of him. His snakes were on standby ready to tell him if they saw anything, so he could completely focus on finding the feeling.
'I can do this. I will do this' chanting in his head.
It was faint but he could feel that pressure in the lock again. Grinning he tried to push against the object he felt. This time was different from all the others as he felt like the magic he was pressing up against was shifting.
'I feel it it's moving! I'm doing it!' Celebrating in his head at his achievement.
The celebration was accentuated as his serpents told him what he couldn't see with his eyes closed.
"It's opening!"
"Wait I see something beyond the door. Someone there!"
The exclamation stopped the celebration dead. His eyes shot open to verify the same. Quickly he summoned a book towards him to hide his actions. A red book flew from the shelf, slamming into his hands with a thud. At the same time the book reached his hands the door was pulled fully open.
Standing in the door way was same person Aris met on that fateful day. It was Professor Severus Snape. Looking just as intimidating and irritated as the day Aris met him.
They stared at each other for a moment before Aris quickly got up to greet the man. Keeping his voice even, "hello Professor Snape"
Not expecting a reply back he turned toward the shelf, raised his arm holding the book and let go. Rather than true book dropping the the floor the book slowly flew back to its place on the shelf. Not looking at the Professor to see his reaction as he snakes were looking for him.
"He looked surprised"
"He closed his mouth and raised an eyebrow"
His snakes told him the play by play, knowing it that only Aris would be able to understand and tell him secretly.
"What brings you here today Professor?" Aris asked neutrally, while turning back towards the man. His serpents took this time to pull back his hair and wrapping it up into a ponytail.
Snape held the same face as when he walked in, devoid of any hint of expression earlier. He spoke in a tone most would describe as cold but Aris suspected that it was just his default voice.
"Mr. Ruamont...I am here to escort you, so that you may procure your school supplies. Now follow me" ending his explanation, Snape quickly turned and walked out the door with his cloak following a second after, from the abruptness of his movements. Had Snape not turned to quickly he would had seen Aris's face morph into a elated smile.
Aris quickly followed the Professor, his grin never leaving his face not bothering to even acknowledge the worker who accompanied Snape to his room.
They marched to the elevator, riding it down to the first floor. They walked through the main reception area over to one of the many fireplaces lining the walls. Most of the fire places were unlit but the few that were had people walking out of the bright green flames. Beside each fire place was a large pot halfway up the wall filled with a white powder.
"We will travel by floo, do exactly as I do. Speak clearly, we will be traveling to Diagon Ally" Snape told Aris with a tone that spoke volumes of his seriousness in instructions.
Snape proceeded to grab a handful of powder and walk into the fire place turned around and called out the name Diagon Ally. He then threw the powder on the ground and disappeared in the following roaring green flames.
After a second of awe Aris quickly followed suit. Taking care to repeat the steeps exactly. Then with a loud voice bordering on yelling Aris said his destination, "DIAGON ALLY!" The flames rose up and just as quickly as they came they left taking Aris with them.
The trip was short but not uneventful, the bright green fire that filled Aris vision never leaving as he felt he was water being sucked down a drain. He caught glimpses of fireplaces and uncountable amount. The experience was amazing and just as quickly ended as he felt be squeezed back out into the air and the fire died down.
Blinking his eyes Aris saw he was in some kind of large room that was filled by people coming and going in similar fireplaces. He quickly stepped out unsure what should happen if someone came through behind him. Looking forward he saw his guide a little ahead outside of the ash littering the hardwood floors around each fire. As he walked to the man, Snape brandished his wand and cleaned Aris of the soot he was unaware of covering his clothes. After which Snape gently put away his wand. The quickly exited the building, Aris turning his head to learning the building was called. Diagon Ally Floo Port.
'Wow really couldn't come up with anything else. Well I guess it makes it clear you arrived correctly' Aris pondered.
The thoughts were quickly stopped as he looked towards the street and saw everything. It was amazing the cobblestone road was filled with people dressed in varying robes and pointy hats all different colors and sizes. The people were bustling around walking into stores and other buildings. There were tables out that had people eating colorful food and chatting. The cacophony of noise merely added to the surreal beauty. All culminating in a singular thought.
'Now this is the magical world!'
