Crackle.
Hiss.
Two boys.
Pop.
Barely visible with their backs against a tree, blending into the black backdrop of night.
But they can see me.
They're staring at me right now.
Fshh.
I send up a shower of orange sparks to acknowledge their presence.
But they do nothing except keep on staring.
Hiss.
This goes on for a few minutes.
Until finally, pop, one of them moves closer to the other.
He's got red hair. Kinda reminds me of mine.
The other one, though.
Crackle.
His hair is like a weak, dying ember, fading orange-gold, but his eyes are far from weak.
The red one sits next to the smaller boy.
The smaller boy doesn't even look up.
They start talking.
Pop.
Oblivious to the fact that I can hear almost every word of their conversation.
"–don't–"
"–have to–"
"–not necessarily–"
"–leave–"
"–I'm going with–"
"Why?"
Snap.
"–because... my friend–"
The boy with light hair... dim as it was, I could tell that his expression was turning to an angry one.
"If you're really my friend, then listen to me when I tell you to leave me alone!"
My assumption was correct. He snapped.
The other one has nothing to say to this.
Or so I thought.
He lifts himself up and moves away from the smaller boy.
"If you're really my friend," he whispers just loud enough for me to catch, "then you should stay with me."
And with that, he disappeared briskly into the blackness of the forest ahead.
"A-Axel..." Now the other one scrambles up from his seat, reaching out a hand in vain to try and catch his friend before he left.
He didn't.
So, with one quick glance at me, the smaller boy left, following after the red one.
And my life went back to normal for a while.
Crackle.
A stray leaf falls from a tree.
Hiss.
An owl hoots, breaking the silence around me.
And then I started to die.
It started out slow, yes. But soon I was clinging to life only by a single twig.
I idly wondered what those two boys were up to, wondering if their encounter was supposed to be the last significant thing I see before I die.
It probably was.
Maybe I should just... let go...
But then I heard boots tramping over dead and dried leaves of the forest floor.
And voices.
Hushed, urgent voices.
Pop.
I could cling to this twig for a little while longer.
The two boys emerged from the wood suddenly, the red one being dragged by the smaller one.
"Look at this fire." The small one demanded sternly, pointing at the stick that was currently acting as my lifeline.
I felt myself fading under the two gazes directed at me.
"It's about to go out," he continued.
But I held tighter to my branch, wondering what this boy was on about.
Snap.
"Everything is going to go out, like this fire."
The red one, Axel, raised an eyebrow in question, as if saying "Do continue".
"Including you and me... and...us."
Hiss.
Everything was getting darker, my vision wavering in and out, good and bad, dark and dim. I was about to go out, just like that boy said.
Axel said nothing for a few seconds, my last few seconds of life...
And just as I faded away into nothing but a worthless pile of ash, he pulled a lighter from his back pocket and told the other boy, "Funny thing about fires, Roxas: they don't go out if there's someone there to keep them going."
–End.
