Watch Your Steps

Thunder roared mightily through the dark night, lightning cut the menacing clouds into shreds, and the trees moaned under the assault of the storm. Two little figures hurried toward the house as fast as they could, hoping to find shelter before it started raining.

Too late. The sky opened and rain came crashing down, flood like, soaking their clothing within seconds. Gasping and wiping the water from their eyes, they huddled under Hana's cloak and stumbled the last few steps into the warm security of Shigure Souma's house.

Leaving little puddles on the floor with every step, they sneaked up the stairs to Tohru's room, careful not to wake anyone. They managed to get there with only one floorboard creaking beneath their bare feet. Once they were through the door, they stripped off their wet clothes, which were uncomfortably clinging to their cold bodies.

Only left with bra and underwear, Hana immediately slipped under the bed covers while Tohru gathered up the dripping pile of clothes in her arms, heading for the open door again. She turned her head to glance over her shoulder at her friend and whispered, "I'll go and hang those up in the bathroom quickly." Still looking at Hana, she stepped out of the room, completely missing the figure outside who was about to enter.

With a poof, a flash, and a cloud of smoke, Tohru fell backward from the impact, flat on her behind. Clothes flew in all directions, landing with sucking noises on the floor around the wide-eyed girl.

Hana jumped out of bed and ran over to check on her friend who just sat there, stunned. "Tohru-kun, are you ok?" Her words quiet and soothing, Hana wrapped her arms around the girl, who suddenly winced, grimaced, and rubbed her lower back.

"Ow ow ow."

"Are you hurt?" There was a trace of concern in Hana's even voice, and Tohru was about to answer and assure her that everything was all right, when she felt the girl at her back tense. She tilted her head to see what was wrong, and noticed that Hana was fixedly staring at something in front of them. Slowly following her friend's gaze, Tohru spotted it at the same time as Hana spoke up again. There, underneath Hana's cloak...

"Tohru-kun. Why is there a mouse staring at us?"

Tohru blushed, momentarily at a loss for words. Just as she regained her voice, there was a small sound, and the mouse was gone. Tohru sighed with relief, a small smile gracing her lips. If she had seen correctly, the mouse's ears had seemed a bit redder than usual.
