Marth was standing beside one of the many tents, but this time, she wasn't alone.
She was supporting another girl that Robin wasn't familiar with. Marth looked exhausted. Her hair was matted with sand and she was gasping for air like she had just sprinted ten miles. Marth looked so tired that she looked as if she might keel over any minute, but this other girl seemed to be in even worse shape than Marth. The girl had cuts and bruises all over her, and she appeared to be unconscious as she leaned limply next to Marth. Robin saw the girl take shallow breaths, proving that she was indeed alive.
Marth noticed Chrom and Robin running over to them. She adjusted the girl next to her so she could stumble forward a bit.
"Please…I beg of you…help her," Marth pleaded and tried to push the unconcious girl towards the pair.
Chrom looked down at the girl, and nodded. He carefully took the unconscious girl out of Marth's arms and into his own. "We'll do what we can."
"Milord, what can I do?" Maribelle called as she ran up to Chrom. Her face paled as she looked at the girl in front of her.
Chrom nodded, "Hurry and get Lissa. Then meet me at the infirmary." Maribelle nodded and ran to go fetch Lissa. Chrom turned to Robin, "Robin, I need you to look after Marth while I get her sorted out," Chrom said as he gingerly picked the girl up off the ground.
Robin nodded, and Chrom quickly walked off, leaving Marth and Robin alone yet again.
Marth glanced worriedly at her companion, then coughed. She shakily brought her hands up to her hair, and tried to shake some of the sand out of it. She sighed, "Ugh, I hate sand."
Robin raised an eyebrow, "This is like the third time this has happened now. You sure you aren't following us?"
Marth was about to say something, then coughed again. She took in a shaky breath, and slowly fell to her knees from exhaustion.
Robin quickly knelt down beside her as she struggled, "Woah, take it easy. Sorry, I'll stop asking questions. Here, take this," he said, and pulled out a tin of water.
She hesitantly took it, and drank a few gulps of water.
She wiped her chin and sighed, "T-Thank you."
Robin nodded as he took the near empty tin back, but he didn't care. He was just glad to see her alright.
Marth sighed as she tried to recover her voice. "I know you probably have…a lot of questions."
Robin nodded, "Yeah…but those can wait."
She shook her head, "No. I need to-"
"Save your energy. We'll discuss this later, but right now you're in no shape to do a lot of talking. Just promise me you'll let me ask at least one question, alright?"
Marth shakily nodded, "A-Alright then."
Robin stood up and held a hand out to the women before him. "Why don't we get you something to eat?"
Marth looked up and shook her head, "No, other people would need it more than I wou-"
"I wasn't asking. C'mon," Robin said firmly.
Marth sighed, and shakily got to her feet on her own, completely ignoring his outstretched hand yet again…shocker.
Robin led Marth to their temporary mess hall, which was a sloppily put together tent with a few pop-up tables underneath it. There were some small crates full of rations and cooking supplies piled up in the back of the tent. Robin made Marth sit down as he went to get her something to eat.
He was intercepted by Sully.
She scowled and crossed her arms. "Who's that?" She asked harshly while jabbing a finger towards Marth.
Robin stepped around her and continued to make his way towards the crates. "Just a friend," He replied plainly.
Sully followed Robin, unconvinced. "Robin, for all we know, she could be a threat. Like a Plegian spy," she persisted.
Robin scoffed, "Spy? Ha! As if! No, I assure you, she's with us."
Sully grumbled as Robin dug through the food supply crate. He pulled out a small package of jerky and dried fruit. "Not much, but it'll do," he thought.
He turned around, but Sully stepped right in front of him, glaring directly at him. Robin glanced around her to see Marth. Marth was sitting patiently at the table, carefully inspecting her sword.
Robin looked back at Sully, and sighed. "Sully, please. I know what I'm doing. Marth has saved me, as well as Chrom and Lissa, countless times. I owe her. So please…give me the chance to repay the favor."
Sully still scowled, but decided to let Robin pass. As she stepped aside, she muttered, "Robin, the second she does anything remotely suspicious, I will end her without hesitation. Understand?"
Robin frowned, but walked back over to Marth, and handed her the food.
He pursed his lips. "Sorry, I know it's not much, but it was the-"
Marth quickly grabbed the package, ripped it open, and tossed a handful of dried fruit in her mouth. She heaved a heavy sigh of content as she savored the sweet flavors.
She looked up at Robin, and smiled. "Thank you, Sir." She clutched the bag even tighter. "You don't know how much this means to me."
Robin smiled, "Don't worry. There's more where that came from. Besides, I still owe you, and I'm definitely not repaying you with just dried fruit."
Marth's smile wavered, "Please, Sir, you mustn't worry about repaying me. I was just doing a good deed like any other person."
Robin shook his head. "No, no normal person would take a fatal blow for a person they don't know." He sat down across from Marth. "So, if there is anything else I can do, please, don't hesitate to ask."
Marth nodded, and took a bite of her jerky. It tasted amazing.
Robin let her eat in peace. Based on her appearance from earlier, she has definitely been through a lot recently. He wanted to bombard her with a bunch of questions, but decided to hold his tongue and let her rest. After about fifteen minutes, Marth seemed to have recovered greatly. Robin's thoughts drifted back to the other girl who was with Marth. She had been in awful condition, and Chrom and the others still haven't come back from the infirmary.
Robin noticed some of Shepherd's sneaking glances towards Marth. Some appeared concerned, others curious, and some, such as Vaike, didn't seem to care.
Marth scowed at the table after she finished her food. She pursed her lips. "Do you think she'll be alright?" She muttered.
"Who? Oh, you mean the girl that was with you?...Yeah, I'm sure with Lissa and Maribelle, she'll be fine," Robin said.
Marth nodded. She clenched her fists, but otherwise remained quiet.
"Who is she?" Robin asked after a few minutes of silence.
Marth was quiet. She opened her mouth to reply, but then closed it as she thought about how to reply. She frowned, "She's just someone I met on the way here."
Robin nodded. He smiled. "Interesting, I thought you were a loner. Apparently I was wrong."
Marth pouted, "Hey, I have no problem working with other people. I'm just very careful about who I work with, that's all."
"Riiiight…anyways, why are you here?" Robin pressed.
"That's none of your business."
Robin shook his head, "It is too! You promised me an answer, remember?"
Marth scowed, "No, I promised you a question. However, I'm gonna set some boundaries. One: No questions about why I'm here. Two: No questions about my past. Three: No questions about this," She said, and held up her sword.
Robin frowned. His eyes lit up, "Okay, well what about how 'the world is teetering on the brink of chaos' or something like that?"
Marth shook her head. Robin sighed. His thoughts then went back to the girl who was with Marth. Marth didn't strike him as the type of person who would just take in anyone. He sat up straight and grew serious.
"Alright then. The girl. Who is she and why is she traveling with you? Is she a friend? Also, why was she in such bad condition when you arrived here?" Robin asked.
Marth sighed, "That's four questions, Sir." She thought about it, but decided to humor him. "Alright, fine. Her name is Heather, and I've only just met her yesterday. I just happened to run into her, and she wanted to help the Exalt. She would've found her way here anyway, I'm sure. So, for her sake, I let her come with me. Unfortunately, we ran into some stray Plegians while on the way here. We weren't expecting them, and she got the bad end of the attack."
Robin nodded, "Oh, I see."
Marth started to collect her things, and stood up. Robin immediately jumped to his feet. "Oh no you don't! You're not gonna just disappear for like the fifth time in a row! Especially in the condition you're in!"
"Sir, I was just going to go check on my companion," Marth said in exasperation.
Robin narrowed his eyes. "Fine, but you don't mind if I tag along, right?"
She rolled her eyes. "Not at all, Sir."
…
Robin and Marth walked to the infirmary tent in silence. Robin walked behind her as she stalked forward. She seemed to know where she was going though.
They made their way to a large tent. The flaps of the tent were closed, but they could hear the voices of Chrom, Lissa and Maribelle from inside.
Marth stood in front of the closed flaps and just gazed blankly ahead.
"I think you can just walk in," Robin said behind her.
Marth took in a deep breath, and pushed the flaps open.
Inside, there were a couple rows of cots. Crates scattered the interior of the tent, and they were probably each full of medical supplies. Marth slowly walked in, surprised that they were able to do so much in such a short amount of time.
"Marth!" A voice called out.
Marth turned and saw the grinning face of her companion, Heather. She was sitting upright in a small cot, and she had Chrom, Maribelle, and Lissa all around her. Standing at the corner of the room was Frederick, who was probably trying to give them space while Heather recovered. He looked skeptically over at Marth, but stayed quiet. Heather was in much better shape than before. She still had a few bruises, but her cuts were all healed up thanks to Maribelle and Lissa. She seemed to have also recovered most of her energy, her face practically glowing with excitement.
Marth couldn't help but smile. Heather had mentioned she wanted to be a mage for the Ylissean knights, so her being in the presence of Prince Chrom himself probably made her like she was living her dream.
Marth walked over to her. "I'm glad to see you're alright."
Heather laughed, "Yeah me too! I'm glad you're alright, as well! Man, who knew Plegians could pack quite the punch. But don't worry! Next time I'll be ready!"
Marth narrowed her eyes, "Yeah, well, next time don't just run right into enemy lines without thought, then freeze when the enemy appears. You have to learn to think things through, Heather." She scolded.
Heather sighed, "Yeah, sorry, I know, I screwed up. I'll be more careful next time."
Marth nodded. She looked to Maribelle and Lissa, "Thank you for helping her. I guess I owe you now."
"Oh, no of course not, Dear. It is our job, isn't it?" Maribelle said, and Lissa nodded.
Lissa's eyes were wide as she looked at Marth in shock, realizing the mistake she had made before.
Chrom smirked as the realization hit Lissa, "Yes, well, I'm glad we could be of some help to you, Marth. After everything you've done for us, I don't know if there's anything I can give to repay you."
Marth shook her head, "No, the thanks is enough for me, Sir."
"Well, I did give her fruit and jerky, so that's a start," Robin said from behind, and stood next to Marth.
Heather went rigid as she looked at Robin.
Robin looked pleasantly down at Heather, and held out a hand, "Hi, there. I'm-"
"YOU JERK!" She yelled as she jumped out of the cot and swung her fist right at his face. Her fist collided directly with his nose.
"Heather!" Marth yelled in surprise, and pulled her back before she could assault him again.
Robin clutched his face in pain and stumbled backwards, "Arghh! What the hell was that for!?"
Maribelle and Lissa stood frozen by the cot, eyes wide with shock. Frederick ran over to the group, but stood beside Lissa. Chrom immediately ran to step between Heather and Robin.
Heather struggled against Marth, but Marth was stronger and managed to keep a hold on her.
"Alright let's just…settle down," Chrom said, unsure about what to say, or even do. Heather was completely fine before now. But, something about Robin flipped something in her.
There were footsteps towards the tent, followed by voices.
"Hey! Everything okay!?"
"Captain, are you alright!?"
"Don't worry, ol' Teach is on the way!"
Heather slowly started to stop fighting, but Marth still kept a hold on her. She glared darkly at Robin. "You're a real ass, you know that?" She growled.
Robin rubbed his nose and glared at the girl, "Look, whatever you think I did, I didn't." He said sharply.
Heather glared back and scoffed, "Ha! That was so funny I forgot to laugh."
"Alright, guys, let's just settle down," Chrom said.
"So this is where you've been, huh? All this time? And it didn't even occur to you to like say something? Not a 'hey, I may disappear for a while and join the Ylissean army' kind of thing?" Heather said angrily, ignoring Chrom.
Behind them, Shepherd's began to accumulate and watch the commotion. A low hum of murmurs began to fill the air, and a few of them readied their weapons.
Robin furrowed his brow, confused. "What do you mean?" He shook his head. "You're just confused. I've never even met you!"
"Don't you play dumb on me, Robin!" She shouted.
Robin's jaw dropped. "H-How did you-"
"You're unbelievable! You know how long I've been waiting for you to come back? Like at least a year! Had I known this is where you've been all this time, that would've saved me a year's worth of stress!"
Chrom narrowed his eyes, and looked at Robin. Robin put his hands up in defense, "Chrom! I don't even know who she is! Besides, I've only been here for a few weeks. Not an entire year!"
"Let go of me, Marth," Heather hissed.
"Not until I know you're done making a fool of yourself," Marth replied in a low tone.
Robin sighed. "If you claim to know me, other than my name, tell me something about myself that no stranger would know."
Heather rolled her eyes, "Fine, if that'll make you act reasonable again…" She thought about it. "You love to read, and would spend an entire day in a library if you could. You're terrible at cooking, and one time you somehow managed to burn water. That coat you wear," she said, and gestured at Robin, "that's from your mother, who you never actually met." She paused. "Happy?"
Robin looked slowly down at his coat. 'My…mother?'
"Robin?" Chrom asked tentatively.
'How would she know any of that?…It can't be…'
Robin sighed, and sat down on an empty cot. He sat there, silent, for about a minute, deep in thought. He ran his fingers through his hair as a million different thoughts went through his head.
"Sir?" Marth said uneasily.
That broke Robin from his thoughts.
Robin looked up to Heather. Even though Marth had let go of her, Heather was still glaring daggers at him. "Listen…Heather. I know this may be hard to take in but…I don't remember anything past a few weeks ago."
Heather narrowed her eyes. "...What?"
"It's the truth! Robin had amnesia when we found him. He barely even remembered his own name!" Lissa piped up.
There were murmurs throughout the shepherd's ranks. Robin glanced over at them, and saw a mix of uneasiness, fear, confusion, and…awe.
He looked back over to Heather, who now looked like she was on the verge of tears. Her lip quivered as she said, "Okay Robin, knock it off. If this is your idea at a joke, it isn't funny."
Robin stayed quiet. That was enough of an answer for her.
Slowly, she sat back down on the cot as tears began to stream down her cheeks. She sniffled, and she sunk her head into her hands as she cried.
Robin stood up, and walked over to her. He sat down next to her and wrapped his arms around her. "I'm sorry," He whispered.
Heather accepted the embrace, and buried her face into his chest as she cried even harder.
Robin noticed Chrom shooing all the Shepherd's out of the tent to give the pair some space. Chrom, along with Marth, gave the pair one last curious glance before exiting the tent as well.
Slowly, Heather began to calm down. Robin let her go, so she sat up and wiped her eyes. They then sat there in silence for what felt like eternity.
"...How long have we…known each other?" Robin asked, trying to break the silence.
Heather shrugged, "Well…about ten years."
Robin's eyes widened, "Woah, that long, huh? We must've been pretty close, then?"
Heather nodded, and smiled. "Yeah, you were like a brother to me."
Robin smiled, too. Heather seemed nice enough, aside from her little outburst from earlier, she seemed like someone he could trust.
"Heather, just because I don't remember doesn't mean I don't want to be friends with you. How about we start over? Make up for the memories I've lost with new ones."
Heather looked down sadly, but nodded. "Yes, I'd like that very much."
Robin beamed, "Great! Starting now, we make new memories! Here's to new friends!" He cheered.
Heather smiled, "Alright, but promise me you won't forget these new ones, okay?"
Robin nodded, "I promise. These will stick with me until the very end, don't you worry!"
Heather smiled, then stood up and stretched. "Alright then, why don't you show me around camp?"
Robin stood up, too, and nodded. "Right. Follow me, Milady."
That earned a soft punch in the arm.
…
Chrom watched as Robin, and the new girl, Heather, made their way around camp. He heaved a heavy sigh, and sat down at a table. He had just explained the whole Robin-amnesia thing with the rest of the Shepherds, and received a mix of reactions from them. Some had more of a sense of respect towards Robin, while others grew weary of him.
It took a lot, but Chrom was pretty sure he was able to put everyone at ease towards Robin.
But, that did take a lot of convincing, which took a lot of energy out of Chrom.
"I still can't believe he remembered absolutely nothing before all this. It's just so hard to believe with how awesome he is," Sumia murmured. She sat across from Chrom, and was fiddling with her lance.
Cordelia sat next to Sumia. "I can't begin to imagine how he must've felt," She mused.
"After everything we've been through, and the guy never told me," Sully said angrily. She was laying on her back in the sand, and was tossing a rock in the air.
Stahl, who was sitting on the ground too, shook his head. "I mean, as crazy as it sounds, we have only known him for about three weeks. I'm sure he just wanted to feel ready to talk about it with us."
"Oh yeah, Stahl? And how long do ya think he was gonna take until he was ready?" Sully said sharply.
Chrom shook his head, "Sully, it wasn't really much of a secret. Frederick, Lissa and I all knew. So please, don't put the blame on anyone, especially on him."
"Oh yeah, Cap? Why didn't you tell us then? It would've been nice to know that I was taking orders from an amnesiac," Sully spat.
"Sully!" Cordelia and Sumia said in unison.
Sully scowled. She dropped the rock and stood up. "Fine, whatever. Just leave me alone if ya know what's good for ya." She stomped off.
Chrom pinched the bridge of his nose. "I don't have time for this." He stood up. "I have a feeling the scout is back with more reports. Sumia, I need you to go find Flavia and Basilio, and tell them to meet me in the war tent." Sumia nodded, and left.
Cordelia eagerly stood up and looked at Chrom. "Captain, what can I do?"
"I need you to go get Robin, Tell him to meet me at the war tent as well."
Cordelia nodded, and quickly walked off.
Chrom turned to Stahl, who was still sitting on the ground. "Stahl, you're with me."
"What about me, Sir?" A voice said.
Chrom jumped. "Gah! Oh um, you can uh…come with me, too, Kellam."
"Yes, Sir!" The voice replied.
Chrom shook his head, then made his way towards the war tent.
…
Lucina sat on the ground by herself. She had opted to keep to herself and interact with the Shepherds as least as possible. She was carefully inspecting her own sword, looking for any chinks or dents in the blade. When she finished, she decided to just people-watch from afar. She noticed Robin and Heather walking around camp in the distance. Lucina looked at Heather, and narrowed her eyes. From what she could remember, she never met this girl before…like ever. So why was this girl so close to Robin all of a sudden?
Lucina rubbed her head. "All this business is making my head hurt," She muttered.
"Yes, yes, some crazy stuff, ain't it?" A gruff voice said from behind.
Lucina tensed. "Oh, Khan Basilio. Pleased to meet you." She said pleasantly as she stood up to greet him.
Basilio smirked, "You mean, pleased to 'see' me again."
Lucina sighed and Basilio laughed. "Ha! The little prince told me everything, lass. And I must say, you are not what I was expecting under the mask! Har Har!"
Lucina shuffled her feet in discomfort. She then felt a hand on her shoulder. "Oh, stop it you oaf. Leave the poor girl alone, will ya?" Flavia said.
Flavia looked at Lucina, and grinned. "I suppose I should be thanking you. Without you, I wouldn't have won the tournament. So thanks!"
Lucina smiled. Flavia lowered herself to Lucina's ear and whispered, "This was your plan all along, wasn't it? I must say, you are a lot smarter than I had made ya out to be."
"Oh, um…thank you?" Lucina said hesitantly, unsure on whether or not that was a compliment.
"Flavia! Basilio! Captain Chrom wishes for you to meet him at the war tent!" Sumia called as she stumbled towards the trio.
Flavia nodded, "Right, we still have serious business to take care of. C'mon oaf, let's go."
"Right, right, coming," Basilio said, and gave Lucina one last wink before leaving. Sumia gave Lucina another curious look, and then turned to follow the retreating Khans.
Lucina looked around. There weren't many people around, so she could easily slip out without being noticed. That was until she heard a familiar someone approach her from behind.
"Do you need something, Sir?" Lucina asked, and turned around, only to be faced with Robin, along with Heather and Cordelia.
Robin smirked, "Just making sure you aren't running off again. We have a battle meeting to attend to, you should probably join as well if your to be fighting alongside us."
Lucina shook her head. "Who said anything about fighting with you?" But she proceeded to follow him to the war tent.
