Throw Your Worst At Me
By RowenaHermioneRavenclaw
Narcissa can't say that she's been very supportive of her son during his childhood.
It would be a lie.
She knows that she was never around, always shopping in some faraway city for clothes or meeting up with her friends for tea. She hadn't spared any time for Draco.
But she does care about him.
During the summer holidays after Draco's fourth year, Narcissa planned to spend time with him. But then the Dark Lord rose again, and she couldn't.
She feels guilty.
But she's a Black and a Malfoy, and people as important as her simply don't feel guilty.
So Narcissa held her head up and kept being the dutiful Lady Malfoy.
Narcissa narrowly ducks a spell that zooms at her head. She throws up a shield to protect herself.
She glances up. The stars and constellations are shining above her, but they're blocked by the flashes of light zooming through the sky.
She can see many of the constellations and stars that members of her family are - or were - named after. Bellatrix. Cygnus. Sirius. Regulus.
Narcissa wasn't named after a star or constellation. Her mother, Druella Rosier Black, took one look at Narcissa's lovely blonde curls, her icy blue eyes and her sharp features, and promptly named her daughter Narcissa: the female version of Narcissus, who, in Greek mythology, is said to be very beautiful.
A blast draws Narcissa's attention back to the battle. Something goes up in flames.
A short silence, as all spellfire ceases for a moment.
Then the fight starts up again, spells flying left and right, both Light and Dark witches and wizards falling to the ground, injured or dead.
Narcissa catches a glimpse of white-blond hair, whipping through the crowd -
"Draco!"
His head turns around to face her. Draco opens his mouth for a moment, perhaps to say something -
And a green light shoots over the crowd in front of the two Malfoys, and Narcissa realises, with dread, where the Killing Curse is going to land -
No. Not Draco. She can't let him die.
It's a quick, impulsive decision.
Narcissa blocks the Killing Curse...with herself.
At least she can die knowing that her son still lives.
