Peacock Craziness

Lucius Malfoy had always loved peacocks.

Why?

Because they were as grand as him, of course. Though not as important.

During his childhood, the only time he saw peacocks was in books. The illustrations were extraordinary, of course - a Malfoy could not expect to read anything less. They looked three-dimensional, and the vibrant colours of the peacocks' feathers looked very real, but Lucius always wished to actually meet a live peacock, to touch one.

He kept these wishes a secret from his father, Abraxas Malfoy, because Abraxas was not one to appreciate his son's obsession with an animal. Animals, in Abraxas's opinion, were inferior.

And Lucius knew that.

He nearly gave up on his dream of meeting a real peacock when a miracle happened - his father died.

Lucius's frail mother, Lucia Malfoy - he'd been named after her - died about a month later due to heartbreak.

So now, Lucius was free to pursue his dream.

His new wife, Narcissa, was fine with it. Peacocks, she said, would be an excellent accessory to their garden.

Lucius purchased them from a shifty business partner. Transportation was quick. Ten peacocks came less than two days later.

He wanted to be the first one to see them, so the second the peacocks arrived, Lucius gave Narcissa a quick excuse and walked outside.

They were beautiful.

Their multi-colored feathers looked even more magnificent than in Lucius's books. Their eyes were blue-grey, much like Lucius's own. They stood tall and mighty, looking at everything haughtily.

So like Lucius himself.

He reached forwards and stroked their beaks. Surprisingly, the peacocks allowed him to.

"You all deserve the best you can get," Lucius murmured to them lovingly. "I'll give it to you."

The peacock Lucius was currently stroking made a noise.

"I'll take that as a yes." A rare smile spread across his face. "Welcome to Malfoy Manor, your new home."
