They can't see it.
Lily has a string protruding from her chest and it's red, red as blood.

She asks Professor McGonagall whether the professor can see Lily's string.
McGonagall says no, but adds that the Red String of Fate (as it is apparently called) can only be seen by the person it belongs to and their soulmate.

Lily's in her second year and she still doesn't know who her soulmate is.
The girls she shares a dorm with tell her that you usually don't find your soulmate until you're at least fifteen.

The library is quiet.
Just how Lily likes it.
She's a Ravenclaw, after all.
She continues to skim books, looking for information.

Severus's hand grips hers with a renewed intensity.
Lily asks him what's wrong.
"James Potter," he whispers.

Lily receives a hairclip for her birthday, and she immediately falls in love with it.
It's white and shaped like her namesake - a lily.
A card profusely thanking Petunia is sent, as well as a cute bracelet Lily bought in Diagon Alley.

Lily never really noticed James Potter.
Sure, she's passed him in the hallways, but she's passed everybody in Hogwarts in the hallways in her four years of being a Hogwarts student.
She heard about him from Severus, and was quite inclined to dislike him.
When she meets him for the first time, face to face, both actually noticing each other, Lily's attention is drawn to his hazel eyes.'
Then she realises that he's staring at her intently. Or more accurately, at her chest.
Lily glances down, wondering what he's seen. It's just her Red String of Fate.
But wait - Red Strings of Fate can't be seen by anybody except its owner and their soulmate right?
And a horrible realization dawns on Lily.
"Not you," she breathes, backing away. She thinks of Severus's constant remarks about James Potter's far-too-large ego. "Not you."
Lily flees.
