They never knew.

Lily and James never saw me, lurking behind my Lord, when he killed them. I had perfected my Disillusionment Charm, and I watched as James's body thudded to the floor. I felt a twinge of regret, then pushed it down -

You chose this, you can't back out now, you'll be killed -

I remember Lily throwing her arms out in a pathetic attempt to protect her son - and when the light went out in her eyes, I could've sworn that her son glared at me.

When my Lord turned his wand on the child, the child that he'd come to kill, his curse rebounded and it was so quick that I hardly realised what was happening -

I would've died, if I hadn't transformed into my Animagus form and scurried out of the house, as quickly as I could.

I spent the night in my house, and at two o'clock, I realised what I had done - I had betrayed them.

They say that regret is one of the deepest emotions you can feel.

But it was too late, wasn't it, they were already dead and their son was who-knew-where, and Sirius undoubtedly knew what had happened, there was no going back -

Later, I would wonder what would've happened if I'd turned the Dark Lord down.

I would've died, but at least James and Lily would survive.

(But I wasn't really all that brave, and I wouldn't be willing to give up my own life for James's and Lily's and baby Harry's -)

Coward.

The word echoed in my mind, and the worst thing was - it was true.

As I gasp for air, I can't help but wonder what will happen when I die.

It's not like anyone will miss me, anyway.

Harry certainly won't.

"I wish it was you. I wish it was you to die instead of them." he spat, and for some reason I wish that to, but -

I shudder, taking my last breath.
