The rest of Betty's day had been relatively boring. At least first period was. She got scolded by the teacher for being late to class and then scolded again whenever she was caught 'gossiping' with Jamie.
It wasn't her fault. Honestly. All she could think of was whether or not the trip to Seattle was worth spending time with someone who unsettled her so much. She tried to shut it out of her mind until she could talk about it more with Jamie at lunch.
Of course, Edward decided to pick today to sit at their lunch table.
Betty seethed whenever she saw him. He sat casually against the chair, making even that simple object morph into a throne fit for a god. Multiple wards for banishing enemies breeze through her mind but she pushed them away in favor of more civilized thoughts.
"Betty," Jamie mumbled once he caught up with her narrowed gaze.
"Cullen," Edward's eyes snapped over to her even though she barely whispered the word.
Rookie mistake.
"Are we going to sit somewhere else?"
"Yes." Betty noticed her sister shuffling towards the table.
"But Bella's sitting there too..." Jamie sounded eager. It was obvious that he wanted to witness first hand what ever gossip that this would cause.
"You can go." Betty paused, meeting Edward's eye then her sisters. "I don't want to bother dealing with vermin." She turns on her heel, making her way out of the lunch before a figure as tiny as herself stops her.
"Hi, Betty. I'm Alice, do you remember me?" The tinkerbell practically bounces with some sort of pent up excitement. "Well, I just wanted to tell you that I'll meet you up at the parking lot after 7th period." She adds on without giving Betty the time to answer.
"Wait!" Betty grabs hold of Alice's hand in an attempt to solve the confusion she felt over Alice random words. Her skin touches Alice's skin.
Cold.
A vicious cold that burned her to the touch. Frost bite and fire are kin to what she was experiencing. It hurts. Visions flickered in Betty's mind. Alice was driving Bella's car with Betty in the passenger seat. The words were hard to understand and the vision was not unlike a brain freeze against her skull. The same chill that was Alice's hand reaped on Betty's brain.
"Fuck!" Betty yanked her grip away from Alice's and clutched her head from the exertion.
"What's wrong, Betty?" Jamie questioned, rushing to the girls side. An accusatory glare was sent towards Alice, who resembled a frightened woodland creature.
"I think I got a migraine."
"Is it serious? My aunt used to get some that made her vomit. Do you need to go to the nurse?"
"I'm fine." Betty shook her head and ignored the faint ringing that was going off in her ear. "Bye, Alice. See you later." The girl rushed off with Jamie faithfully trailing after her.
The rest of the cafeteria gawked at the dumbstruck Alice Cullen before she too left the spot. Her family's suspicious, questioning eyes pierced her more than anyone else's.
With the killer headache, Betty's day continued to be uneventful minus the speed bump during lunch. The ticking of the school clocks mocked her but she did not know whether or not to be grateful that everything was moving at such a tedious pace.
She was dreading the ride home with Alice and tried talking herself out of what occurred earlier. There was no way that Alice knew that she would be driving Betty home, or at least she hoped that was the case. Unfortunately, a text from Bella confirmed Alice's vision. It only left Betty with more questions.
Up until now she had been respectful enough with the Cullen's privacy to not actively search for what they were. Oh, she questioned it a lot but never did she put any research into her paranoia. Betty had the resources to solve the enigma that was the Cullen's in hours if she truly felt like it, but she didn't. Now, the situation changed.
The confrontations between Betty and the Cullen's were becoming more frequent. Edward was starting to close the distance between Bella and himself. More questions were surrounding them and more abilities that Betty had not been privy to before were being revealed. Without proper protection, Betty would be doomed should the Cullen's ever choose to be hostile.
Ring. Ring.
The sound of the dismissal bell brought her out of her reveries. She walked to the parking lot with worry in her eyes and hesitance in her stance.
Alice Cullen stood there in all her bubbly, fae-esque glory. Her appearance did nothing to shroud the shadow of death that engulfed her aura.
"Hey, there!" Alice chirped. In her hands the keys to Bella's truck dangled. A pit formed in Betty's stomach.
"Hello, Alice." Betty answered, heading straight for the passenger side of the truck. The girl stayed silent as Alice went into the truck as well.
It was comical. The way the small girl was dwarfed by the truck. She looked like a child trying to drive an adult car. Betty would have laughed if she wasn't so nervous.
The awkward silence was killed by the roaring of the truck.
"Wow, your sisters truck is pretty loud." Alice laughed. Betty just nodded and turned her head to stare out the window, making it clear that she didn't want to have any conversations.
"How was school today?" Alice tried.
"It was school." Betty answered with a shrug of her shoulders.
"I noticed my brother sat at your table. He's a little clueless sometimes."
"I wonder where he gets it from." Betty made a point to look directly at Alice. This time the pixie girl took the hint and kept her mouth shut with the occasional glance at Betty.
They had been speeding, or at least going as fast as the truck could handle, so the trip home was even shorter than with Bella.
"Just one question."
Betty paused her descent from the truck and turned to Alice.
"Why do you hate us so much?" The question was unexpected but not unwarranted. It was almost comical. The girl, or whatever Alice was, who could see the future had no idea why Betty reacted to her family the way she did. Betty wanted to mock her, but her kinder nature won over. Well, almost.
"Your family is a threat, Alice Cullen. I don't know how and I don't know why but the Cullen family is different. Your auras ooze out death."
"How can you see that?" Alice asked. "What if you're wrong?" Betty was sure the strange girl questioned her sanity.
"I'm not wrong." Betty paused. "If your family hurts mine, I will use everything in my power to make sure the rest of your days are spent in agony."
"How do you know we aren't strong enough to stop you?"
"I don't but I do know that I will not go down without a fight. And remember Alice... Hell hath no fury like a witch scorned."
With that Betty turned on her heel and walked into her home, leaving Alice with more questions than the one she asked.
"Hell hath no fury like a witch scorned? What?"
