"Hey Bella, what is this for?" Emmett asks as he holds up an egg beater. He was spending the day Bella-sitting at the Swan house. The remainder of the Cullen's were in Seattle attending a fundraiser for the Forks hospital. Emmett had been looking forward to some 'Bella time' and convinced Edward to attend as Rosalie's date for the event. For the past hour, he had been distracting Bella from her math homework (he knew how much she hated it) by finding seemingly everyday objects (to Bella) and asking her what their function was. In all fairness – Emmett had probably never even used an egg beater in his human life, as Bella knew his mother and sisters would have done the cooking.

"It's for mixing eggs Emmett." When he still looked at her in confusion, she decided she might as well demonstrate and make herself a snack at the same time.

Getting up, she selected two eggs and the container of various pre-chopped vegetables from the fridge (Edward had ensured she wouldn't need to utilize a knife with Emmett around). Setting them on the counter, she selected her favorite cast iron frying pan, a bowl, and a spatula.

The frying pan went on the stovetop to preheat with a dollop of bacon grease in it. Emmett watched in fascination as she dropped some veggies in the pan to brown, then cracked each egg into the bowl. Then she held her hand out to Emmett.

"The egg beater please, sir."

"Of course m'lady," Emmett responded with a grin as he placed the instrument into her hand.

Bella then proceeded to beat the eggs as she explained exactly what she was doing. Emmett watched over her shoulder, literally with his chin resting on her. Bella rolled her eyes and smiled to herself. He was the goofy big brother she loved dearly.

Once the eggs were ready, she gave the veggies a stir then poured the raw egg into the pan. When the omelet was close to finished, she spooned the goat cheese Esme had gifted her (she was surprised how much she enjoyed it) onto half and then folded the other half over.

Letting it cook for a few minutes longer, Bella then plated the omelette, turned the stove off and carried it over to the table along with a fork.

Emmett took the seat across from her and watched her eat with his nose scrunched up. She giggled at the hilarious picture he made. As awful as he found the smell of human food, he was leaning across the table as much as his seat allowed to get a good view of her eating.

As she ate, Bella interspersed her bites with solving her math problems. Finding a mistake she had made on the previous problem, she reached for her large pink eraser. Only Bella being Bella, she misjudged the distance between her water glass and the eraser, knocking the glass over.

It wouldn't have been an issue except for two things: Emmett was distracted with poking at a mushroom sticking out of her omelet and therefore did not catch the glass; when the glass fell it landed on the metal of her wristwatch, shattering on impact.

Bella yelped as the shards slashed and imbedded into her skin on the top of her arm. Instantly blood began to bubble up.

Emmett said, "Oh shit" and immediately stopped breathing. His eyes went pitch black, but he seemed to remain in control.

Bella tried to breathe through the pain. The glass hadn't touched the soft underside of her wrist, so she knew the damage just looked worse than it was. Calmly, she asked Emmett for a towel and the first aide kit that was in her upstairs bathroom. Then she too held her breath – everyone knew her track record around blood.

Emmett handed Bella the towel, then headed upstairs. As he went, he pulled out his cell phone to call Carlisle. He was really worried about Bella – she was currently as pale as he was and that looked like an awful lot of blood.

His call to Carlisle went unanswered. Frantically, he tried each family member in succession, with no answer. Heading back down the stairs, his supernatural hearing caught a sucking sound, and a deep inhalation. These were immediately followed by a weak, "Bad idea Bella" and a thud as her body hit the floor.

Reentering the kitchen, Emmett's heart hit his toes. Bella was lying in a growing pool of blood, an open gash on her arm where there had previously been glass imbedded and she was paler than he had ever seen. Strangely she also seemed to have a green tinge to her skin.

Believing she was dying, Emmett really started to panic. Charlie was fishing and out of cell range; he thought about calling 911 and immediately discarded the idea – Carlisle wouldn't be there to change Bella if the human doctors couldn't save her; he considered calling Jacob – as much as he hated the wolves he knew the dog would do anything to protect Bella. Unfortunately if the dog couldn't save her he would also likely prevent anyone from changing her.

After processing and discarding each of those ideas in a matter of seconds, Emmett grabbed up the towel and wrapped it around Bellas limp arm. Again, he desperately tried to call Carlisle to no avail.

Emmett hadn't helped a wounded human since he was one himself. He didn't know the first thing to do for her beyond trying to stop the bleeding. And the towel was fast approaching needing to be replaced. Emmett was convinced Bella would be dead in minutes if he didn't do something!

The only plan Emmett could find was to change Bella himself. Could he do it? Unlike Edward, he had drained both his singers without a conscious thought until they were dead and cold in his arms. He didn't have Rosalie's control let alone Carlisle's. Even the little Pixie would be a better choice than he.

The towel began to turn a vibrant red where Bella had removed the shard and Emmett was convinced he didn't have a choice.

He gathered Bella into his lap and smoothed her hair away from her face. With a look of utter determination, he spoke for the first time since his initial reaction, "It'll be okay Little Sis. I'm gonna make it okay."

Tilting her head to bare her neck, he locked his tongue to the roof of his mouth in an effort to prevent swallowing and then sunk his teeth into her artery.

He held himself with the unnatural stillness of his kind, willing his venom into her system and doing what he could to ignore the blood bubbling into his mouth and spilling down her neck when he refused to swallow.

Finally, he figured he had injected enough and swept his tongue over the wound to close it and seal the venom in.

It then took every ounce of self discipline Emmett possessed (which admittedly wasn't much to begin with) to pull away from her neck and spit the incredibly sweet blood from his mouth.

Bella remained unconscious. Emmett took a clean kitchen towel and replaced the one on her arm. Knowing Charlie wouldn't return for two days, he ignored the mess in the kitchen, lifted Bella bridal style and took off with her through the woods to the Cullen home.

He had just laid Bella down in the bed Edward had purchased for her when she began screaming. Remembering the fire from his own change, Emmett laid down next to her and pulled her onto his massive chest, hoping his cool body would help her pain and his presence might somehow soothe her.

An hour later his phone finally rang with an incoming call from Carlisle.
