Breathing: Labored.

Pupils: Dilated.

Pulse: 110, irregular.

They were walking a rope across a great chasm spanning dimensions of their relationship, but that rope was taut, ready at the slightest twist to snap so the two would fall in to the depths of their relationship.

Their hearts were racing, their glares matching, and their breathing coming in equal, but silent gasps.

And there it was between them: that space.

That space they hadn't defined because it had developed under circumstances that were logically controllable.

Yet by a definition they'd conjured in their separate thoughts that space was mistrust, anger, and the all-consumingness of the Job.

And it was them.

They were the that space.

His inability to let anyone in and his ability to shut everyone out and it was his intense anger, the explosiveness of that anger.

It was her concern that was in that space, her desire to be allowed inside his private thoughts she once could read in to, she once shared with him.

The distance was a result of each other -- his fear and hers. His anger and hers. Her concern and his panic.

Because he could not let her in.

He could not talk.

But she listened, she listened to the silence and the tension forever stretching between them with every caustic word that left his mouth.

That space was there, invisibly overflowing with more emotion and thought than had ever existed between two people.

And that space was why they no longer knew each other.

Because, in fact, they knew each other so intimately that they were lost and desperately trying to become two people again to get their bearings in the many dimensions of their relationship.

That space was a new dimension of their relationship.

He moved.

She moved.

The rope snapped ... and they careened in to the depths of their relationship.

But - they tumbled together...
