The yacht cut through the water smoothly. They were headed North, towards Portland, as recommended by Iris. Percy was in the cockpit, once again donning his white captain's outfit. He seemed to be in a better mood.
Hazel and Frank didn't know what happened the night before. He left with his message, seemingly worried and pissed off, then he came back relaxed and in a great mood. He thanked Iris for having them, and led them to the yacht.
They sat on the deck, making a game plan. They would go to Portland, find Phineas, somehow get the information from him, then head to Alcyoneus's lair, free Death, and come back to wait for whatever happens next.
Then Percy asked how they got rid of the basilisks.
"You knew what they were?" Frank asked.
"Of course. I told you. I know a lot of things. I used to know the future, but lately, it's been… dark."
Hazel and Frank absorbed the information.
"Well? How did you?" Percy asked.
"You'll have to ask Frank, he's the one who did it." Hazel said.
Frank looked like he was about to break down. "I. I uh, I don't really want to talk about it."
Percy nodded. He stood up. "Well. We better start moving towards Portland."
Which brought us to now. Hours passed as they sailed. Endless sea for miles around them.
Frank and Hazel took a nap, while Percy stayed in the cockpit. He wasn't necessarily steering, more like he was just there. He pulled out the mini sword made from Rory's feather. It was of shitty quality, and seemed only put together with hot glue.
The blade itself was razor sharp, just like all of Rory's feathers. Dried blood sat where the feather met the handle.
Percy sighed, before putting the feather away. He stood up and looked out the window. Land seemed to be in the distance.
Portland.
LINE BREAK
Rain fell in the city. The water patted the questers.
"How are we supposed to find a blind man who can see the future?" Frank asked.
The sound of a weed whacker came from across the street. When percy turned to look at it, he struggled to keep in a laugh. "I think I found him."
Frank and Hazel turned to where he was looking. A man was running around in a bathrobe, wielding a weedwhacker. He struck it at harpies as they tried to steal food from him. Food was laid out on a table like an elegant feast that kings and queens would have in Ye Olden Days. The food came from the numerous food trucks.
"HA! DIE YOU STUPID CHICKENS!" The man would scream. "AWAY FROM THE DEEP-FRIED ICE CREAM!"
"Did he just-" Frank asked.
"Yep. he did." Hazel answered.
Percy clapped his hands. "Well, let's go bother the crazy man with a weedwhacker. Absolutely nothing is going to go wrong."
They approached, the demigods following behind Percy.
"Phineas!" Percy called.
Phineas turned around and instantly swung the weedwhacker at him. Percy grabbed the shaft of it before the blade hit him. He wrestled the weedwhacker out of the blinds man's hands and turned it off.
"Enough of that."
"Who are you? How dare you disrupt my meal?" Phineas demanded.
"Lucifer Morningstar, and I dare, very easily."
Percy looked over the man. He was old, and fat. He was bald, save for the rim of white thin hair. He had scars across his head. His bathrobe was spattered with ketchup, mustard, and other various condiments. He had on bunny slippers, though they looked old and faded. He was clearly blind, as his eyes were milky white.
"I don't care if you're Jupiter himself. I have harpies to fight. Dirty food stealers!"
Percy looked over at the harpies. Harpies were supposed to be plump, that was just their body type. But these, they looked like they were starving. Sunken eyes and hollow cheeks. Their bodies were covered in molting feathers. They wore ragged burlap sacks as dresses. They had stopped coming for the food, opting to watch what was about to happen.
Percy realized that they seemed desperate for the food. He turned back to Phineas. "We need information."
"On what?"
"The location of a giant."
"Ah, Alcyoneus. Yes, I know where he is."
"Are you going to tell us?" Hazel asked.
"And ruin my mistress's plans!" Phineas exclaimed. "No. I'm no you, daughter of Pluto. She is still mad about that. No, the only way you're getting the information is over my dead corpse."
Percy narrowed his eyes. He lit his hand on fire and held it close to Phineas's face, making sure he could feel the flame. "That can be arranged."
Phineas seemed to realize that Percy wasn't joking. "Um." He frantically thought about ways to get out of this. "What about a wager?" He tried. "I can't see small events, so I can't cheat. If you win, I will tell you the location. I win, and you three go back to trying to guess."
"If I get to pick the wager." Percy said, extinguishing the flame. He felt Frank relax.
"Deal!"
Percy smirked. He took Phineas's shoulder and guided him to a table. He sat down on the other side.
He took a couple of ketchup packets and held them in his hands. He threw them on the table, and two golden goblets appeared. They were beautiful. Gems and crystals of all colors and types lined the middle. Water sat inside.
Next to them sat a white tablet. A skull was engraved onto it.
"Here's the bet. There are two chalices. Both are filled with water. I have a poison potent enough to kill ten angels over. Frank and Hazel will put the poison in one of the cups. Then, we will each pick on and drink. Winner is the one who is still breathing."
Hook.
"But if I'm dead, then I can't give you the location." Phineas said.
"Yes you can. I have many abilities, some that are considered to be unnatural." Percy paused. "You know what, if you're still living, then I'll give you your eyesight back."
Line.
Phineas licked his lips.
"Once in a lifetime opportunity." Percy said.
Phineas seemed to be weighing everything together. Percy started to count down from ten. "Deal!" He finally said.
Sinker.
"Hazel, Frank, would you be so kind as to put this tablet into one of the chalices please. You can go behind one of the trucks so that way I can't see which one has the poison."
They were hesitant, but they did it. They came back. Both goblets looked the same. They placed them between Percy and Phineas.
"Since I'm such a good sport, I'll let you pick first."
Phineas took his sweet time. He ran his hands over each goblet, feeling them. He smelled each one. He listened to them. He stuck a finger in both of them, which kind of grossed Percy out. Finally, he picked a chalice. Percy took the other one.
"Bottoms up." Phineas grinned.
Percy smiled, before they both drank their goblets.
Instantly, Percy started to cough. He put a hand to his mouth as he coughed. Frank and Hazel went to his side.
Phineas stood up. "HA, YES, I WON! I CAN FEEL MY EYESIGHT RETURNING!"
Suddenly, after a very violent cough, Percy took a deep breath. "Sorry, I think some went down the wrong pipe. Apologies."
Suddenly, Phineas' smile faded. He fell to the ground and vomited. He upchucked everything he had eaten in the last hour, which turned out to be a lot. There was chicken, pizza, tacos, and some deep fried ice cream.
Phineas slowly turned to dust. It crumbled under the rain and wind.
"Well now what?" Frank asked. "We still don't have the information."
Percy held up a finger. He waved his hand. A crack split the Earth. A ghostly white spirit rose from it. It took the form of Phineas.
"Hello, Phineas. I believe I won our wager."
"You tricked me!" Phineas yelled. "You lied."
Percy shook his head. "I don't lie. I tell the truth and you found your own way to Hell. Now, where is Alcyoneus hiding?"
Phineas let out a breath. "Chugach State park."
Percy let out a laugh. "Lying doesn't look good on you, Phineas."
"Fine, Skagway."
"Stop lying."
"Yakutat?"
"This is embarrassing. Maybe I should let you go back to Hell. A couple hundred years should get you to talk."
Phineas fell to his knees. "No, please. I'll tell you the truth!"
"And?"
"He's at Hubbard Glacier."
"Well, thank you. Now you'll see if that was enough to save you."
Percy waved his hand and Phineas disappeared. He turned to his companions. "Well, let's go guys."
They started to walk away when Percy looked over his shoulder at the harpies. "Feel free to eat. My treat."
The harpies attacked the food like a pack of ravenous food.
LINE BREAK
Hazel stood at the bow of the yacht, trying to get her seasickness under control.
Frank stood with Percy in the cockpit. He was looking down at Hazel, worried about her.
"You should talk to her." Percy said, not taking his eyes off of the horizon.
"What do you mean?"
"I thought that was clear. You should talk to her. You know, like what we're doing right now."
"Right."
"Of course."
Frank left the cockpit and walked out onto the deck. He walked over to Hazel. "You good?"
"I'm fine." Hazel said.
"It's fine. My mom used to say that you shouldn't have to hold onto a problem alone. But if you don't want to talk about it, that's fine."
Hazel pursed her lips. She wasn't scared of sharing it, she was scared that she'd slip back into a blackout.
"Um. You were right. Earlier. When you said I came from the underworld. I'm… I'm an escapee. I shouldn't be here."
From there, the whole story came out. Everything, from how her mother summoned Pluto, to moving to Alaska, to how she died. She described everything in detail, except for Sammy, her old boyfriend. When she was done, she waited for Frank to yell at her. To call her a monster.
"Hazel. You sacrificed yourself. You stopped a goddess. I couldn't ever be that brave. You went to Elysium for your actions."
Hazel broke down crying. "I didn't… I didn't go to Elysium."
She felt the memories coming for her. She remembered the banks of the river Styx. The cold darkness of the grabbed Frank's hand, trying to cling on to consciousness, but it didn't work.
She found herself back in the Underworld, with Frank at her side.
A/N. Sorry this took so long to get out. I have writer's block, so instead of trying to fix that, I'm just gonna end it there and make the part I'm stuck on the beginning of the next chapter.
What'd y'all think of the little bet between Percy and Phineas? I feel like Phineas, upon seeing that Percy could kill him, would be willing to make a deal.
Also, yes, Percy raising him from the dead is entirely within his powers. Anyone he kills is under his service. Most of the time he just either sends them to Hell or Heaven, but yeah, under his control. Keep this in mind, because it'll come into play later.
Thoughts?
