Hi Guys,
Here's another high school themed fic.
These stories have made me so excited as both a reader and a writer and quite frankly have been some of the best things I have ever read!
This story will consist of many ships!
I hope you enjoy!
xxx
P.s. a lot of films have inspired this story, the most prominent being The Duff and High School Musical (HAHA)
Obviously, I do not own these story lines or Pokémon, so here is my disclaimer.
. . . . . . .
When your 17, everything in life seems like a struggle. The brutality of high school and it's never ending cycle of social hierarchy and mean girls, the drag of classes and the fear of missing out on getting into a decent college; the constant pressure to be perfect, just as every ancestor before you was… with the exception of Uncle Fred (he does still work at the local diner, but he's happy nonetheless).
But for May Maple, being 17 had become especially difficult. You see, May's life had been anything but ordinary from the moment it began a mere 17 years, 8 months, 26 days and 23.5 hours ago. Not only was she the daughter of a famous Pokémon Gym Leader, but her mother was also the head of the region's newspaper, the 'Dragonite Daily' (known for its rapid delivery speed hence the dorky name). Being from such a successful family meant the spotlight was always on May… everywhere but school that was.
School was a completely different story. Don't get me wrong, May liked school, she just would've preferred to be sent to a planet millions of miles away from the dusty, old halls of Petalburg High; the most prestigious school in the entire Hoenn region. Okay. Maybe she didn't like it all that much. But it was bearable. Thanks to these two…
Subject one: Misty Waterflower. A beauty with long locks as red as the fire alight inside her, her skin porcelain in colour and long legs inherited from the goddesses above, May was sure of it. Misty was the feisty one of the group, her personality was strong and confident and she was not one to turn down an opportunity to speak her mind. Being the captain of the swim team, meant her body was that of every man's fantasy; with a face that held the most unique pair of cerulean eyes one had ever seen. But behind all that, Misty was intelligent and funny and the most loyal friend a girl could've ever had; and May was so very grateful she was hers.
Subject two: Dawn Berlitz. Unlike Misty, Dawn wasn't too hot-tempered, being the well needed calm within their little trio. She was your typical girly girl and was a fan of all things preppy, especially when it came to pep rallies and school football games, but she was the captain of the cheer squad and class president, so who could blame her. Guys would swoon over her and all of her 5'2 glory, which consisted of lengthy blue hair and a sparkling pair of friendly cobalt eyes, she was warm, clever and charming; the kindest young women in their cohort, in May's eyes.
If it weren't for these two, May's life would've ended at Petalburg high long ago. The trio spent every minute of the day together, except when they'd be whisked away to separate classes or commitments. But no matter how far apart the were they'd always return to one another, but I guess that's what you'd expect when you'd been friends with two people since elementary, though that's another story within itself.
Unlike her friends, May wasn't too confident in her place in Petalburg's social strata; she didn't have guys pining after her and most of the parties (okay, all of them) she was invited to were through her friends. However, this never really seemed to bother her… she was more content with staying home and writing stories for the school's paper 'The Petalburg Press', then she was going out anyway.
Ah, another thing making her life at 17 that bit brighter; the school paper. May was always welcome there. She'd been on the team for years now and going into her senior year meant she'd be writing for the last time before getting her Pokémon license and moving on with her life as a Petalburg High School Alumna.
Petalburg High was prestigious in more ways than one. Not only did it educate a great deal of successful doctors, lawyers, journalists and business people but, it was also one of the most reputable schools in the region for its high percentage of eminent Pokémon Masters, Breeders and Coordinators. Most of the students at the school were here for one of those three reasons. Both of May's parents had been here, it was only right for her to attend as well; however, unlike her parents, she was stuck on what she wanted to do when she left.
With senior year just beginning, May was one step closer to her graduation…
and she was fucking petrified.
….
"May! Breakfast is ready!" a voice floated from the bottom of the Maple's staircase. It belonged to the mother of the family—Caroline, in attempt to get her teenage daughter moving and out the door for school. Luckily, May was already ahead of her.
"Coming Mom!" A flustered May shouted, skipping down the stairs, eager to get out the door. Snatching a piece of toast from the table, May made her way towards the front door, much to the surprise of her mother.
"Leaving already?!" Caroline asked in confusion. May turned to face her, a horn beeping outside before she even had a chance to get an explanation out.
"Let's go Maple!" an irritated voice yelled from the driveway. Caroline laughed, planting a kiss on her daughter's cheek before farewelling her. May bolted out the door, where she was greeted by the friendly face of Dawn Berlitz, one of her two very best friends.
"Good morning sunshine!" Dawn greeted warmly, a smile adorning her features. May hopped into the car, buckling her seatbelt before offering Dawn a simple 'Good morning', in return.
"And hello to you too Mist- wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?" May teased the third member of their little trio which probably wasn't too clever considering Misty was driving.
"Augh, always Maple. Thank God it's Friday!" Misty huffed, tapping her fingers along the steering wheel as she pulled out of May's driveway. It was Friday already… the first month of senior year had flown by and they were surviving… much to their surprise.
"So! There's a party tonight at Gary Oaks', and we are going!" Dawn announced, earning a groan from May.
"C'mon Maybelle, you promised you'd live a little this year!" Misty piped up.
"Hey- I am! And don't call me Maybelle!" May threw back.
Dawn giggled from her seat next to Misty. Maybelle… May hated when they called her that. It wasn't even her name, more like a tribute (reminder…) of May's embarrassing obsession with the movie 'Beauty and the Beast' when she was a kid. The girls would watch the movie over and over, May insisting they call her Belle for a solid year and a half.
"Well… I heard Drew's going to be there!" the bluenette added enthusiastically.
Augh… Drew Hayden.
He had lived across the street from May forever. They were quite close when they were younger. Really close actually. Their parents would hold dinner parties and barbeques and Drew and his brother, Adam, and May and her brother, Max, would play out in each other's backyards till it was dark and their parents had to practically, drag them inside. But times had changed… they had all grown up, Adam had left for college and May and Drew had grown apart. They barely spoke nowadays. Drew was wrapped up in his world of football and girls, May in her world of books and journalism. But with all that being said, May still saw him as that boy she had a slight crush on, all those years ago. Her heart would still leap when she saw him and butterfrees would flutter in her stomach when he nonchalantly looked her way in the halls at school.
"Don't tell her that! Then Little Miss Shy won't even consider going!" Misty cried, snapping May away from her thoughts of her green-haired neighbour.
The brunette rolled her eyes. "If you guys promise not to mention him for the rest of the day… I'll come."
"Deal!" Misty and Dawn shouted in unison, earning a chuckle from May. Parties weren't really her thing, but she could handle one night for the two of them.
When they finally rolled into the parking lot, it was 7:45am, with school a mere 15 minutes away, the carpark was busy with the hustle and bustle of students rushing to get in on time.
"Hmm… I spy with my little eye, someone who Misty's in love with!" May teased, earning a death stare from the red head.
The front courtyard was littered with seniors. Ash Ketchum and his little gang, including none other than the famous Drew Hayden; and his buddies Gary Oak and Paul Marino, gathered on the front steps of Petalburg High.
"Man, I hate when he wears that shirt," Misty scoffed, shutting off the car's engine and pushing open her door.
Dawn laughed at this statement. "I think it's cute! I also notice how nice his arms look in it, but I'm sure you can see that too…"
Misty blushed, rolling her eyes. Ash was adorned in a black t-shirt, a pokéball design covering the back of it; and Dawn was right, his toned biceps looked incredible against the tight black fabric. He wore a pair of blue jeans and black converse, his messy black hair combed back lazily, with what one could only assume was his hand.
Locking her car, Misty followed the girls through the courtyard and towards the steps into the building, earning a few wolf whistles along the way.
May studied her friends on their walk across the yard.
Misty was the trendy one out of the three of them… She looked good without even trying. Today, she wore a pair of black skinny jeans, which were ripped down her legs; an oversized band tee which exposed a small portion of her toned stomach where it was tied in a knot; and combat boots. Her red hair was out, long and flowing down her back, her face dusted with some bronzer and her cerulean eyes framed by some black eyeliner and mascara, making them even more striking. She gave off an aura that said 'don't fuck with me', her confidence something May only dreamed of possessing.
Dawn was Miss Fashionista. Her outfit was stylish, yet elegant. She wore a long-sleeved blouse, black in colour, tucked into a light blue, tartan skirt, falling mid-thigh. Her feet were clad with a pair of strappy black heels, her blue hair curled and pulled over her left shoulder. Her makeup, was simple and natural, and aside from an obvious gloss across her lips, you couldn't tell she was wearing any. On her back was a light blue satchel bag, completing her look. She smiled vibrantly, reflecting warmth and beauty to all around her.
May looked down at her own outfit. She had opted for a pair of high-waisted leggings, a grey, cropped t-shirt and her trusty white chucks on her feet. She didn't have any make-up on and her brown hair was pulled into a lazy, messy bun. She had nothing on Dawn and Misty. In fact, May looked a little out of place next to them. They didn't seem to notice… or care for that matter. They loved May and she was all right with that.
"Looking good Mist," Ash Ketchum voiced as the girls passed his gang on the stairs. His tone was flirty and Misty's face exploded with colour.
"Bite me Ketchum!" she responded casually, walking past him and straight up the steps.
Ash snickered, shaking his head. Their relationship was complicated to say the least. They too were close friends, mainly because their mothers were the best of friends since… well, since forever! Like May and Drew, Ash and Misty had grown up together, and even after her mother's passing, Misty remained close to the Ketchum clan.
"Hey boys…" Dawn smiled, nodding her head slightly in the direction of Paul Marino. Paul was a tough guy, but his clenched jaw seemed to ease slightly at Dawn's gesture, a slight blush noticeable against his tanned cheeks.
Linking arms with Dawn, was May, who received a smirk from Drew Hayden, who had clearly caught her staring at him during Misty and Ash's exchange. With an eye roll and a sigh, May followed her friends down the halls of Petalburg High. The three were greeted with waves and the occasional kiss on the cheek, although May could tell most of the greetings weren't meant for her, but she smiled anyway.
When they finally made it to their locker, Dawn spoke up.
"Misty! What was that? He was giving you a compliment!"
"Yeah… Mist…" May added, both girls giggling at their red-headed friend.
"Oh, shut up, you!" Misty laughed, nudging the brunette slightly.
"I need to make him work for it. Treat em' mean, keep em' keen! Isn't that what people say!"
May shook her head. "Oh Misty, you don't actually believe that!"
"No! Of course not!" she laughed again. "But it's funny to say!"
"Right…" May chuckled. She opened her locker pulling out her AP Biology and Coordinating textbooks, her first two classes for the day. The first in which neither Dawn nor Misty were a part of much to May's dismay.
"Tattered old chucks again, Maple?!" a squeaky voice jeered from across the hall.
"Same shitty old insult again, Serena?!" Misty spoke up, mocking the girl's tone.
Serena huffed, storming off down the hallway with her gang of mean girls. Knowing better than to rile up Misty, she ended the exchange rather quickly.
"Thanks Mist…" May mumbled, pushing her locker closed.
Misty blew a kiss May's way, moving towards her and wrapping an arm around her shoulder.
"One of these days I'll get her, you wait and see!" The red head announced, earning a laugh from her friends.
May thanked her lucky stars she had Misty around, Serena was a constant issue… She hated May and May had no idea why…
With the chime of the school bell, the trio was whisked away to homeroom, taking their usual seats, in the row second from the back. Students poured in, including Drew, Ash, Paul and Gary; now joined by Brock Harrison, who's hands were entwined with that of his girlfriend Joy Jameson, until they took their seats.
May placed her elbow on her desk, steadying her head with the palm of her hand as she watched Miss Jenny, their homeroom teacher enter the room.
"Alright, you lot. Settle down…" the women called, signalling to the class to quieten down, clearly surprised, when they did.
"We have a few announcements today from our various club and team leaders, so I want you to listen closely to what they have to say. Dawn- would you like to start?"
Dawn stood up from her seat and strode to the front of the room confidently.
"I'd love to Miss J!" She beamed. "As many of you know, varsity seasons for many of our school sports start in a few weeks. The same can be said for our cheerleading squad, which hopes to make nationals for a fourth consecutive year. As reigning champions, we hope to score another title, whilst, cheering on our football team the Poochyenas, of course! So, we are holding cheerleading try-outs in free period in the gym. As your captain, I hope to see many of you, future 'PaCHEERisus' there. Thank you!"
"Thank you Dawn. Hopefully Coach Flannery will see a lot of new faces there. Misty, you're up!"
"Okay, basically the same goes for the Poliwhirls, our swim team. We are holding try outs after lunch. You'll find us all in the water. Any questions?"
Ash Ketchum raised his hand playfully. Laughter echoed around him. "Can anyone try out for a chance at team captain?" he teased, clearing hoping to rile Misty up. The smirk on his face said it all.
As quick as lightning, the red head hit back. "Hmm, well Ketchum, to become captain you need to display impeccable skills in the water, assuming you've made the team first. Unfortunately for you, I don't see that happening; with a head that dense you'll sink… and I need my team to swim."
With a cheeky smile and a wink in his direction, she walked back to her seat. The room had erupted into a chorus of laugher and 'ooooooo's.
"Nice one Misty," Brock Harrison piped up from behind the red head, a cheery Misty taking a slight bow before sitting down.
Ash glared at his friend, earning a chuckle in response.
"Okay, okay, that's enough!" Miss Jenny interrupted, a slight smile on her face too.
The rest of the announcements were given and the second bell for the day sounded, signalling first period.
Augh- biology. A subject in which May had a love hate relationship with. She was good at it, but sometimes it frustrated her, especially considering her friends weren't there to share in her misery. Taking her seat at her usual desk, May noticed her lab partner hadn't yet made an appearance among the sea of students walking into the science room. Leaf Greene, was her name. She had begun a few weeks ago at Petalburg high, and the girls had really hit it off. May's class would be dreadful now she wasn't here either.
When majority of the class had taken their seats, Mr Ramsay, their biology teacher, entered the room. He was a middle-aged man with brown hair and green eyes. He had a stocky build but was quite tall. May could tell he would've been handsome in his younger years. He was friendly and fair, easily one of her favourite teachers.
"Ahh, good morning class. Let's begin today's demonstration…"
As her teacher continued with his presentation of today's assignment, May found herself staring out the window… She daydreamed thinking about all kinds of things… her friends, the party tonight, the lunch special in the cafeteria (please be cheeseburgers!) … Drew… she really wished she hadn't thought of that last one.
She thought about that promise she made to her friends about 'living a little' this year. She hoped she'd keep it…
The brunette was snapped from her thoughts by Mr Ramsay's deep voice.
"Miss Maple, are you hearing me?"
"Oh! Umm- s-sorry Sir! Can you repeat that?" May replied, shaking her head in an attempt to dismiss the thoughts it contained.
"I said you will be paired with Mr Hayden today, as both your partners are absent." He stated matter-o-factly.
May gulped. "Please be a joke…" she whispered to herself. At least she thought so…
"-fraid not, Maple…" Drew murmured, dangerously close to her ear. She could feel his warm breath against her neck as he spoke, causing her to shudder. Mentally cursing herself for speaking out loud, she hoped her cheeks had remained pale, at least that way he couldn't see the effect he had on her.
"Hayden…" she greeted, a forced smile on her face.
"C'mon April, we are paired together once, at least try to have some fun with it," he retorted, offering her a charming wink.
"Yeah, fine. Just make sure you help me out… I'm not doing all the work here! And don't call me that!" May snapped, getting stuck into their dissection of a what Mr Ramsay indicated was the eyeball of a cow.
"No problem there. Dissections are a piece of cake!"
May chuckled. His cockiness intrigued her. May didn't know why she came across so blunt with him, considering the way he made her feel internally. She assumed the brutal cut off, of their friendship had something to do with it… but, nonetheless, she would try and enjoy his company for the time being.
"So… you coming to Gary's party tonight?" Drew was the first to break the silence.
May nodded gently in response, concentrating on the task in front of her.
"Yeah, Misty and Dawn are dragging me along…" she replied absent-mindedly.
"That's good. It'll be great seeing you there… I-I-I mean you'll have fun." Drew chuckled awkwardly.
May dropped the scalpel she was holding, causing a clanging sound to emit from her desk as it connected with the tray in front of her.
Picking it up hastily, she cleared her throat.
"Uh-huh… I-I hope so…" May responded, her words laced with the same amount of awkwardness as his.
Did he really just say it'll 'be great to see her there'? Did she imagine that?
Shaking off the questions she held, May focused on their experiment.
The duo shared a few laughs, a couple of flirtatious exchanges and some light-hearted banter, before the bell cut their reunion short. May found herself saddened by this… she swore that for a second, she was talking to the boy from her childhood.
She didn't realise she'd missed him that much.
Man, did that feeling suck.
…
The day had dragged on slowly, like it always did on a Friday. May's head continued to swim with thoughts of green-headed boys and biology labs through all her classes. She couldn't shake them.
Her stomach flipped when she saw him watching her at lunch time, Drew clearly unaware that she could see his green eyes dart to her every now and then.
For the first time in her high school life, May was excited to go to a party. Something she never thought would happen.
So, when the final bell signalled the end of the school day, May felt excitement wash over her body. She practically ran to Misty's car, to the surprise of her best friends.
"Woah May, are you in a hurry?" Dawn laughed when she finally made it to the car herself.
"N-no, I'm just really glad to see the weekend! That's all!"
May's giddy smile was enough to give it away.
"Ohhhh! So it has nothing to do with a certain boy and a certain party that he may or may not be attending tonight?" Misty added, tongue in cheek.
"Oh! He's going… ooops, shoot! I-I-I mean, no!" May continued, red-faced.
Dawn and Misty couldn't contain their laughter.
"You are so c-uuute, Maple!" the red head exclaimed, wrapping an arm around the blushing brunette.
"Oh, shut up… let's go!"
"Your wish is my command!" Misty retorted, untangling herself from May and jumping into the car. The girls followed suit and with a rev of the little, red car's engine, they sped off out of the car park and into the weekend.
…
"May, are you really wearing that? Again?"
"I think she looks cute, Mist!"
"Yeah, you would Berlitz, you don't have a mean bone in your body… I however can ask the tough questions. So, Maple? Are you wearing that?!"
May chortled in response to her friends' question.
"What's wrong with this Misty?!" she asked, spinning around in attempt to show off her outfit.
The brunette wore a grey scoop neck tee, tucked into a pair of blue high waisted jeans. Her trustee red hoodie was tied around her waist, a pair of red converses covering her feet. Her hair was down and messy, a slight dusting of pink swept across her cheeks.
"Nothing! It's just, I thought you'd have a bit of fun with your outfit, being a party and all…" The red head shrugged. Her outfit showed off her toned body in a way that screamed both style and class beautifully.
She had a pair of white skinny jeans on which were ripped slightly along the thighs, a lacey, maroon bodysuit tucked in to them. Her toned arms were on full display, her skin still slightly sun-kissed from spending all Summer at the beach. She had a gold cuff on her wrist, matching the two dainty, gold chains around her neck. A pair of black, heeled boots dressed her feet. Her long, red her was pulled to the top of her head messily, pieces falling wispily around her face and down the nape of her neck. Much like today, her makeup was natural, except for the liner around her bright, cerulean eyes.
"Don't listen to her Maybelle, you wear whatever makes you comfortable. You look good in anything!" Dawn chimed, producing a warm smile from May.
Ironically, Dawn's outfit looked anything but comfortable to the brunette.
She wore a pink bodycon dress that hugged her body. It had thick straps and fell mid-thigh. Dainty, silver jewellery decorated the bluenette's wrists, neck and ears; her feet adorned with a pair of strappy heels, matching the silver colour of her accessories. Her blue hair was half down, the other half pulled into a sleek ponytail at the top of her head. Her makeup was natural, aside from a bold pink gloss accentuating her plump lips. She too, looked incredible.
"Ready to go?" Dawn asked, shoving some makeup into her handbag.
The other girls nodded. May was thankful, they had picked her house to get ready at. It meant she could grab a snack and her favourite book and shove them both into her bag without her two friends realising. She knew, through no fault of their own, Misty and Dawn would be pulled onto the dancefloor, leaving the third member of their group to make her own fun.
"Oh, you girls look lovely!" Caroline chirped as the trio made their way downstairs. May's mother had kindly offered to take them to the party. Although she didn't agree with it, Mrs Maple knew that teen parties were home to alcohol and crazy kids and she much preferred to take the girls then have them in an accident on their way home.
"Thanks Mrs M, and thank you again for taking us…"
"Misty, you've known me long enough to know you can call me Caroline! And it is my pleasure. Are you ready to go?"
"Sure are!" Dawn exclaimed, excitement lacing her words.
And with that the three of them headed out the door...
…
At the party, It hadn't taken long for the girls to be whisked away from May. She didn't mind too much, she was glad they were enjoying themselves. Picking a spot on the couch on Gary Oak's patio, May placed her cup of water on the table beside her before getting stuck into her book. Although it was loud and dark, she had managed to get a spot of light from her seat, illuminating the pages of her novel. She had read a chapter or so in, before a voice pulled her out of her fantasy world.
"April? Are you seriously reading right now?" It was Drew, his broad shoulders shook as he laughed, snatching the book from May's grasp, much to her dismay. Thankfully she'd managed to keep a grip on her cup of water, now in her hand.
"I'm not really the partying type Hayden," she stated matter-o-factly, eyes narrowing. Drew shook his head in disbelief.
"You could at least try to have some fun… I mean look at everyone else."
May let her eyes rake over the room subtly. Red cups and popcorn littered the floor, and the sounds of bad pop music blared through the speakers. She suddenly wished she'd never looked up; her book had captivated her in a way this party never would. Outside, the scene was worse; drunken teenagers pressed against each other in what May could only assume was a kind of sexual dance ritual. Some had stripped down to nothing but their underwear as they frolicked in the pool, tongues stuck down one another's throats in steamy make out sessions that were way to public for the brunette's liking. Scanning the crowd once again, May's eyes fell on her two best friends. Misty and Dawn were dancing blissfully near each other. She watched as the red head's head fell back in ecstasy, eyes closed and hips swaying along with the music, red cup glued to her hand. Ash Ketchum made his way over to her, holding her hips from behind, his lip to the side of her neck as they swayed together, bodies pressed against one another. In a similar way, Dawn giggled as a boy, unrecognisable to May, came up behind her and whispered something in her ear, a smirk on his face. She turned to face him, pulling him into her dance as their faces got closer. May forced herself to look away, only to be met with the eyes of a smug looking Drew.
"What?" she snapped, his stupid smile irritating her even more.
"Oh nothing… I was just thinking," he said, still sporting the same cheeky smirk as he took a seat beside her.
"About…"
"Well, people talk ya know. It's just odd, your little trio."
May shook her head in confusion.
"What are you talking about?"
"You, Dawn and Misty. It's odd. You just… oh, never mind."
"Spit it out Hayden, or I swear I will shake it out of you," May threatened, shifting in her seat. She thought about tearing her book out of his hands, but decided against it. She thought it'd be best to hear him out first.
"Well, think about it. Misty and Dawn are so-"
"So what?!"
"Out there, social… hot and you're, well you're little April, the one who makes them look fantastic, because you're so- well- surprisingly average! It's fascinating," Drew said with a shrug.
May stared at him, mouth slightly ajar. Did he really just say that she was average… and her friends were hot. Call her stupid, but Drew had pretty much just insulted her appearance and personality in more ways than one. Did he really think her friends were just her friends because she made them look better?! She was fuming.
"Excuse me?" she hissed, Drew lifting his hands in defence.
"Woah! It's not a bad thing. Just means you got some hot friends. Good on you!"
Overcome with anger, May stood up turning towards Drew and tipping the contents of her cup on his head without a second thought. "Screw you, Drew!" she snapped, ignoring the rhyme she'd unintentionally let slip from her lips and snatching her book from his hands.
"Hey, no- May wait! What the fuck!?" the green haired boy yelled across the room, a chorus of oooooh's following the words as the left his mouth.
May was ropeable. Determined not to cry, she stormed out of the party and pressed down the footpath. Only when she was a decent distance away, did she finally allow herself the lame pardon of calling her mother to pick her up.
The car ride home was quiet and awkward. May was still angry and Caroline knew better than to ask what happened. So the two sat in silence; the only sounds to be heard were from either the radio or from the bushes outside where wild pokémon ran wild underneath the light of the moon.
Drew's harsh words, had torn a hole in May's already tattered confidence, yes that much was certain… but they had also encouraged her to think about how she was going to finish up her senior year.
If she made it that far.
…
"What happened to you last night, Maybelle?" Misty's voice floated through the red cell phone May had placed lazily in front of her, on speaker. She lay on her stomach, laptop open as she began typing away on her keys. After 15 missed calls, May thought she'd better answer her phone before they girls forced their way through her bedroom window.
Misty's voice was laced with concern, causing May to bite her lip… she had let herself cry all night, she didn't need to start that cycle again.
"Oh… nothing. Was just feeling a little tired is all…" the brunette replied, her tone rather melancholy.
"C'mon May, we know you better than that!" Dawn piped up. May had almost forgotten the bluenette was on the line too.
"I'm fine Dawn, I promise!"
"You're not! Firstly, you didn't even attempt to correct Misty, we know you hate it when we call you Maybelle! And secondly, you haven't mentioned Drew once—considering that you two actually spoke last night, I swore you'd be busting to fill us in!" Dawn added, causing May to huff.
Her feelings for Drew had taken a drastic turn since last night. Where feelings of infatuation once blossomed, feelings of anger had taken over with no chance of leaving any time soon. Thoughts of their interaction in the Biology lab long gone. May didn't even know who he was right now.
"Well…" Misty spoke up again, clearly annoyed with May's lack of response. She rolled her eyes, trying her best to think up an excuse to silence her friends.
"I guess he wasn't exactly who I thought he was… that's all," May retorted. She didn't want to think about Drew's words, nor about her place in her little friendship circle. She didn't want to think about any of it, period.
"What do you mean? What happened?" Dawn asked. Her tone was soft and curious, her words laced with concern.
May clenched her fists. Gosh they could be so persistent.
"Nothing! I-I-I don't want to talk about it right now…" she snapped. She kinda felt bad, considering how nice Dawn was being, but she really didn't want the conversation to continue.
Someone must've known this, because almost instantaneously there was a soft knock at her bedroom door.
"I've gotta go guys, I'm sorry… I'll talk to you later." And with that, May hung up her phone.
The knock sounded again, the brunette rolling her eyes; this family could be so impatient.
"You can come in!" she called, turning around and pulling a scarlet red hoodie over her grey tank, completing her outfit, which was comprised of black leggings and black Ugg boots… it practically screamed lazy Saturday. Her hair fell at her shoulders, she had managed to brush it, at least.
Her guest had managed to push the door open and step inside May's room. The brunette had heard the door close again when she had finally put her jumper on.
"What is it Max, I'm bus-"
"Hey Maple…"
No way. There is no way Caroline would've let him in. No, no, no. This was not happening.
"He's not there May, it's in your head…" May whispered, her back still to the door.
Drew chuckled softly.
"Again, I'm afraid not..." he spoke up. The green-haired boy took a step closer to May, tapping her on the shoulder softly.
The brunette turned around, her eyebrows knitted in anger, her big, blue orbs now slits against her sun-kissed skin.
"And what do you want. Mr surprisingly average!" she spat, causing Drew to take a step back from her.
"I wanted to come to apologise," he said slowly, his eyes to the floor.
May laughed sarcastically, Drew's hand shooting to the back of his neck, rubbing it awkwardly.
"I don't wanna hear it Hayden. Your apology means shit to me."
Drew hadn't ever seen May this fired up. He knew he had fucked up. He honestly didn't even know what possessed him to say it. He didn't even mean what he said. The alcohol had corrupted his tongue and his attempt to flirt with the brunette took a major wrong turn. Drew had always found May attractive… even in sixth grade when she hadn't quite had that growth spurt like the other girls in their class had over Summer. He found her intelligence somewhat intimidating and her personality quite endearing. She wasn't average… not even in the slightest. He regretted every word.
"But May, I mean-"
"Stop!" her voice was getting louder now. She inched closer to him, her eyes on his.
"If you think you're going to talk shit about me, making me question everything I've known for hmmm- I don't know- MY WHOLE LIFE, you can think again!" her tone was strong and her volume was high. A smirk crept onto Drew's handsome face.
He had several inches of height on her, and his build was dramatically larger than hers.
"Why the fuck are you smirking at me!?" she cried out in rage. Who did he think he was? Couldn't he tell he had hurt her enough? Now he was laughing at her? Boy was she wrong about him. Two days ago, she would've killed to have been in a room alone with Drew, now she was worried that being alone with him would have him killed.
"I was just thinking, in our seventeen years as neighbours, I've never heard you speak so loudly…" Drew's eyes were soft and May found it hard to look him in the eyes. She'd be damned if she fell for his stupid tricks. But man was he cute… Grrrr! Stupid, cute Drew! Shaking the thought from her head, May crossed her arms. It was crazy to think that they'd known each other for so long… Her whole life he was right across the street from her.
"Get out Hayden! I will prove to you that I am anything BUT average!" she crept closer to him again, causing their faces to get closer, only about three or four short inches apart. Drew's breath hitched in his throat, as a red-faced May looked him dead in the eye. A slight blush dusted his own cheeks as he stood frozen and expressionless in his place.
Then, out of nowhere a smirk crept onto her face.
"You just watch me…" she voiced strongly. It was only slightly above a whisper, but Drew was certain her voice held a sultry tone. His stomach was in knots, under his toned torso.
Was she challenging him?
The brunette stepped around him hastily, snatching her bag off her dresser and charging out, leaving him flustered and speechless in the middle of her crimson coloured bedroom. The sound of a door slamming indicated her exit from the Maple residence, ironically.
Drew blinked a few times, shaking himself out of the trance she had just placed him in.
Something told him, he'd be in for a shock the next time he saw her…
And boy would he be right about that.
. . . . . . .
I'm back… for now!
And there is chapter one!
Would love to hear your thoughts (please go easy on me) J
