Here we go! Chapter two… If you've stuck with me, thank you.
I really hope you like this one, Enjoy!
…
By the time Monday rolled around, May had made certain that she was going to shock the life out of Drew Hayden when she arrived at school that morning.
When she had stormed out of her room after his lame attempt at an apology, she found herself at the mall. If she was going to prove to him (and the rest of her senior class) that she was anything but average, the first thing that needed to change was her wardrobe. She had done a complete 180; changing her jeans for skirts, her hoodies for trendy jackets and her trustee chucks for heels. Her undergarments got an upgrade too, but that was mainly because she should've thrown out her skitty underwear years ago.
Somewhere along the way, she had filled Misty and Dawn in on her plans and blurted out her confrontation with Drew. Let's just say it took May and Dawn a good hour to convince Misty that 'wiping that dumb smirk off his face by attacking him with her sister's pokémon' was not the right thing to do. Although Dawn tried to cheer May up with a pep talk (rather than allow for such an intense makeover to occur) insisting that 'she didn't need to change for anyone', the bluenette agreed to help her friend with her quest.
Even though she had reiterated Drew's words to her best friends, May made sure to leave out the fact that she had felt as though his remarks had rang true at times. She made them believe that she had no idea what he was on about and that their trio was the same as any group in their school. The girls agreed with this statement. May was one of them and that was that.
May of course knew this wasn't the case. She was anti-social and awkward and well- average looking… but that was before. The new May was about to blow everyone out of the water.
With a quick adjustment of her outfit in the mirror, a honk of a car horn pulled her attention to the black satchel bag on her bed, which she snatched up in a hurry. If this plan was going to work, she'd need to get to school on time…
With a deep breath and a nod, she reassured herself she could pull it off.
"Okay Maple, showtime," she mumbled, turning in the direction of her bedroom door.
Walking down the staircase of her home, May was met by an impressed Caroline at her front door. Obviously, her mom wasn't in the know about the reasons for her fashion improvement, but the older lady was absolutely delighted at the sight of her daughter in a skirt.
"Oh, honey- you look so different! Good different, so grown up!" Caroline beamed, handing her daughter a raspberry muffin for breakfast.
"Thanks Mom… I thought I'd make a change. But, I better go, Dawn and Misty are waiting…"
"Mommmmm-" a familiar voice called from the kitchen.
"Ahh yes, looks like your brother needs me too. Have a beautiful day, sweetie," Mrs Maple added, kissing her daughter on the cheek.
When the coast was clear, May pulled her skirt up a little higher, it was a mini, but she was embarrassed that Caroline would tell her it was too short. She felt guilty at first, but after catching a glimpse of herself in the reflection of her front door, she realised that she loved how her skirt showed off her toned legs. Something she never thought possible.
"Woah! Who is this?!" Misty called from the driver's seat of her car, as May stepped outside. A wolf whistle escaped the red head's mouth, May giggling in response.
It felt nice to be receiving some positive attention in regards to her outfit, especially from Misty. The brunette was sporting an extremely different style compared to last week. She wore a white button up shirt, tucked into a leather mini skirt which fell just above her mid-thigh. The shirt's buttons were undone at the top exposing May's delicate collarbones. Her hair was out and wavy; her makeup simple apart from the black mascara accentuating her already long eyelashes and causing her blue eyes to sparkle even more. On her feet were a pair of black and gold pumps, with a strap at the ankle; the colours complementing the gold jewellery on her wrist. Her black satchel bag hung stylishly from her right shoulder, tying everything together.
"You look beautiful May," Dawn chirped from the backseat of Misty's car. May smiled and thanked her before climbing into the front seat.
"Oh! I cannot wait to see the look on Hayden's face when he sees you! Average my ass… never were, never will be!" Misty exclaimed.
Ugh Hayden, the teen had tried to push him from her mind. She was still riling at his comments but at the same time… he made her anxious. This time however, she was anxious that she wouldn't get it right. She prayed her plan would work and he'd regret the words he spoke to her the other night. She wanted him to feel as stupid as she had. She needed to succeed, or this would all be for nothing…
The ride to school was long. It felt longer than normal, as if the universe was trying to torture her. May's heart was in her throat, her stomach in knots as they pulled into the parking lot. To say she was nervous would be an understatement. She was petrified, but there was no backing out now… she had no choice, she had to go in.
To make matters worse, the parking spot Misty had chosen happened to be right next to Gary Oak's black sportscar; his group loitering around the front of it, some spilling onto the footpath ahead.
"I can't do it guys…" May uttered, hyperventilating a little. The confidence she radiated during her conversation with Drew, now a distant memory, in comparison to the uncertainty she displayed now.
"You can, we're right here, you've got this!" Dawn gushed, squeezing the brunette's shoulders from her place in the back seat of Misty's car.
"C'mon Maple! For revenge, remember!" Misty beamed, pumping her fist into the air.
That was enough to light the fire in May's belly once more.
"You're right," she voiced positively, placing her sunglasses on her face; "Let's do this".
…
Drew Hayden had spent the entirety of his weekend feeling bad about his exchange with May Maple, the girl across the street. As kids she had always challenged him… but no matter what dumb shit he'd say to her, she'd always forgive him. Although he hadn't really spoken to her since- well practically since middle school, their relationship practically non-existent now- he didn't expect her to be so quick to dismiss his apology, even though it wasn't the best. He still felt bad about that too…
This morning however, Drew woke with a fresh attitude. If she wanted nothing to do with him, fine. He wasn't about to chase her, no words could make him forgive her, so why bother trying. He expected her to ignore him. He expected her to forget his words. What he did not expect was for all those expectations to go out the window and for her to look like that…
"Duuuuuude! Is that- is that May Maple?!" Gary announced, his shock clear as the words left his mouth. It was this shock that caused all the boys to stop what they were doing and look up at the trio hopping out of the little, red car in front of them. Their heels clicked against the pavement, as May flipped her hair over her shoulder, a bright smile painted on her face.
Ash, Paul, Gary and Brock stood glued to the footpath, raking their wide eyes across the group, clearly surprised by the girl who had filled May Maple's place. Brock earnt a slap from Joy, his girlfriend who was clearly unimpressed with his hungry looking eyes.
Drew felt as though the wind had been knocked out of him. He blinked a few times, his mouth ajar as he took in the scene in front of him. A burning sensation hit his stomach and he tried to regather himself. She looked stunning… heck, she looked sexy. Her hemline meant her toned legs were on full display, but the way it hugged her hips and butt sent Drew's pulse racing.
"Damn! She looks hot!" Gary remarked, shifting on the balls of his feet. A smirk now graced his features, causing Drew to narrow his eyes in anger. He knew that smirk. It was Gary's signature and the way he was now licking his lips meant he was definitely thinking about May in a way Drew never him wanted to. He wanted to smack the look right off his face.
"Cut it out, man… she looks the same as always. Stop staring," Drew growled, he was clearly annoyed which earned him some laughter from the gang around him.
"I thought your little crush on her ended in elementary, Hayden?!" Paul uttered. Usually the quiet of the lot, when he did speak, his words were like poison; deadly effective.
Drew shook his head, flipping his hair out of his eyes in annoyance.
"I'm outta here. I'll see you losers in class."
And with that the green-haired teen stormed off down the footpath and towards the doors of Petalburg high, his knuckles white as he clutched the straps of his backpack in frustration.
May, Misty and Dawn had watched his actions, exchanging smirks and snickers as they walked arm in arm across the school courtyard.
Boy would today be a long day.
May, one- Drew, zip.
…
May didn't realise how much her change in look would boost her confidence. Apart from the girly compliments and occasional wolf whistle, it wasn't until she dropped a textbook on her way to her final class did she realise that people did really view her differently.
"Woah- let me get that for you gorgeous," a voice appeared, when May's book hit the ground. It was low and deep, its owner possessing the most mesmerising pair of sapphire eyes May had ever seen. Was he talking to her?
"Oh- um, thank you," May responded warmly, blushing a little at his compliment.
Handing her the textbook, the teen in front of her grinned brightly, his perfect teeth on full display.
"I'm Brendan," he said, reaching out his hand.
"May," the brunette replied, accepting his handshake.
"Pretty name… hopefully I'll see you around." His tone was flirty, causing May's cheeks to reddening once again.
She nodded bashfully, a shy smile on her face as he walked away, a wink sent in her direction as he did so.
May knew exactly who he was. Brendan Williams, captain of the school basketball team, the protagonist of every girl's fantasy at Petalburg high. She just couldn't believe he was talking to her… and he was so- so charming.
With a spring in her step, May made her way into her favourite class- Coordinating.
When she got to her seat at the back of the room, she noticed a particular sour looking Drew in the right corner, next to her own seat. His jaw was clenched, gaze firm as he stared out the window. Taking her seat, May smiled to herself, organising her stationary until Dawn's familiar face filled the seat on the left of hers.
"Hello my love! How has your day been?" Dawn began. It seemed as though their teacher was running a tad late, meaning they'd have time for a quick catch up.
"It's been fantastic! You'll never guess who just stopped me in the hall! Well- he helped me, but still… stopped for a chat!" May enthused, earning an excited smile from Dawn.
"Who?!" she asked exuberantly.
"Brendan Williams!" May practically squealed, "and Dawny… oh, he was so sweet and-"
A sardonic laugh sounded from the seat beside her, cutting May's tangent short.
"Brendan Williams, sweet… please April, it seems his hair spray has clouded your judgement…" Drew piped up, his tone mocking May's excitement.
The glare on May's face was enough to melt ice. Who did he think he was?
"Excuse me?! I don't remember asking for your opinion," She spat. A week ago she'd be afraid to stand her ground like this, but she was proud she could hold it together now.
"Oh no, it's free for you Maple. Everyone knows Williams is a player… He only wants one thing," Drew stated matter-o-factly, earning a scoff from May.
"Correct me if I'm wrong Drew, but people seem to say the same thing about you…" Dawn piped up, raising an eyebrow in his direction.
Drew rolled his eyes. He hated that rumour. The truth of the matter was, he wasn't a player. Not in the slightest. But being on the football team meant a certain stigma attached itself to his name. It pissed him off big time.
May's glare melted away, overtaken with a cheeky grin, at Dawn's comeback. Drew shook his head, ending the conversation with a sigh as their teacher Miss Keira entered the room.
Drew loved this class. He knew his father was against his dreams of Coordinating after getting his Pokémon licence but at least he had this class until he graduated. He could forget about the misfortunes of life and be completely carefree in here. Well… usually.
At the moment even with the help of his favourite class, he couldn't escape his thoughts.
Or the girl who danced in his head. His disinterest turned to worry, his annoyance to concern; feelings of attraction buried years ago resurfacing and he had no idea why. He hadn't thought about her like that… or at all really, for years.
He needed to shake it, whatever it took.
…
The week seemed to fly by, and before they knew it Friday had rolled around again.
The attention May had been getting was second to none and she was delighted with it. She loved how people were noticing her and it made her feel fantastic. Seniors who never looked her way, would stop her in the halls for a chat and she was welcomed into classrooms with open arms and saved seats. But the best thing of all was the attention she was getting from Brendan.
He'd escort the brunette to class, invite her to sit with him during free period and offer to carry her bag to the cafeteria. He made May melt… all thoughts of green haired boys and 'surprisingly average' insults, far from her mind.
With all this being said, it shouldn't have been a surprise when Brendan headed her way on Friday afternoon after the dismissal bell had sounded.
"Hey May… how's your day been?" he asked, the allure in his voice quite apparent to an infatuated May.
"Good thanks," she giggled, "how about yours?"
"Yeah, fine thanks cutie… hey listen, I was wondering if you were busy tonight? I was thinking maybe we could catch a movie?"
May's stomach dropped. Was THE Brendan Williams asking her out… on a real, proper date?
"Uhh- y-yeah, that sounds great!" May beamed, grinning from ear to ear.
"Perfect! I'll pick you up at eight…" he winked, causing May to blush slightly.
As she watch his figure grow smaller in the distance, May leant back against her locker, a dreamy expression overtaking her face.
'A date with Brendan Williams… could this week get any better' she thought to herself.
With a satisfied sigh, she sifted through her locker, grabbing her necessary belongings before turning in the direction of the school's exit.
She couldn't wait to fill Dawn and Misty in. They were going to be thrilled!
A new look and a date with the school's super hottie, man was this week the best. May was certain about that.
…
"Okay people! Concentrate! We need to have you looking tip top for this date-"
"Not that you don't already look beautiful naturally Maybelle, but you know what Red here means!"
May giggled at her friends, dangling her legs over the edge of her bed. Her wet hair was twisted up in a towel, her crimson robe covering her body. When she broke the news to Misty and Dawn, they were ecstatic. Dawn had practically squealed in her face, squeezing her as tightly as she possibly could; Misty doing a little victory dance in the meantime. May was so excited, but also super nervous. She knew she wasn't exactly Brendan's type and this was her first official date in well- almost forever. There was that one time with Peter Davis in Middle School, but that was more of a pity date… but anyway, May was nervous.
The girls had practically forced their way up the steps of the Maple residence and into May's bedroom to help pick an outfit for her big night. Misty had shoved her into the shower to let 'the masters work'. Apparently, Misty had picked up a thing or two about fashion from her sisters (not that she needed their advice, her outfits were killer), as much as she hated to admit it. Dawn on the other hand, was as fashionable as they came and was the much-needed voice of reason in such a high-pressure situation. It was for this reason, May was happy to leave them too it, while she relaxed in the shower for a little while.
She still couldn't believe her luck, a date with the hottest guy in school! She had to pinch herself again to make sure she wasn't dreaming.
"Okay May, while Misty finishes up here, let's get started on your hair and makeup," Dawn beamed, a giggle escaping her lips.
She, guided May to her makeup station, where the bluenette had laid out her materials.
May took the towel away from her head, looking at herself in the mirror as Dawn reached for the hairdryer.
She was so lucky to have these two… the sisters she never had. She knew that no matter where life took them, Misty and Dawn would always be there for her and she would always be there for them. That was certain.
May hummed in appreciation as Dawn effortlessly styled her hair. By the time she was finished, May's brown hair fell in waves over her shoulders, framing her face, romantically. Her makeup went very much the same way. Her skin was flawless and glowing, pink and brown hues decorating her eyelids. The mascara against her eyelashes framed her sapphire eyes in a way that pulled you in as they sparkled against her tanned skin. A delicate sweep of pink blush decorated her cheeks and a subtle gloss emphasised her soft, pink lips.
"Oh Dawn! You're amazing! Thank you!" May raved, turning and pulling her friend into a huge hug.
"May! Careful, you'll smudge your makeup," Dawn giggled, "but your welcome!"
"And, I think I have it!" Misty piped up from across the room.
On May's bed, she had laid out the most perfect outfit. It illustrated style and elegance, whilst suiting May's personality beautifully. A short, red, tea dress with subtle white polka dots lay against May's dark bedsheets, a cropped, black, denim jacket beside it. On the floor were a pair of black, heeled boots and a matching black bag.
"Woah… yes. Thank you! Thank you! You definitely have it!" May retorted, an excited tone in her voice. "Now let me change! It's 7:45, I'll meet you downstairs!"
"You got it Maple, we'll see you in a sec!"
And with a wink, the girls vanished from the room.
At the foot of the steps waited Mrs Maple, her hands entwined and brought to her face, in glee.
"So girls, how's she doing!"
"All set Mrs M, she's just changing now!"
"Oh, I cannot wait to see the outfit you picked out Misty! She's going to look beautiful… Oh, my little girl, going on a date… Thankfully Norman's out of town or the poor boy would get such a grilling…"
"She looks fantastic, Mrs Maple! And don't worry… between Misty and I, he'll get a good talking to at some point," Dawn laughed, Caroline smiling brightly at her.
"Oh, you too are such good friends to her! But, what about you two… any boys in the picture? I'm sure they'd be chasing after you!"
At this statement, Dawn turned to Misty, raising her eyebrow, a smirk worn proudly on her face.
"Oh yes- Misty is just finding it hard to admit-"
"- admit that dating is silly and boys are idiots! Ooops, I admitted it, done!" Misty butted in, red faced.
"Hey! Boys are not idiots!" a voice, belonging to May's younger brother Max, floated across the hall.
Misty bit her lip, "All boys expect you Max, of course!" she called back, hoping he could hear her from the next room.
"Well okay then, but Misty… whoever he is, you should let him know how you feel, you don't know where it could lead!"
"Gee umm, thanks Mrs M, I'll keep that in mind…"
Dawn chuckled in response to this, earning a nudge and a glare from a clearly embarrassed Misty.
A gasp filled the foyer, the previous exchange from moments ago, long forgotten.
"Sweetie! You look stunning!" Caroline gushed, bringing her hands to her mouth as her daughter descended the staircase.
Beside her, Dawn and Misty hi-fived covertly; they had done well as her stylists, May was a knockout.
The brunette held onto the handrail, a giddy grin plastered to her face.
She felt fantastic. Even looking in the mirror, she was stunned; expecting to see anything but the delightful young woman, her friends had turned her into.
"Thanks Mom," May responded, embracing the older woman gently. "I couldn't have looked like this without my two stylists though, thanks ladies!"
"That'll be fifty bucks, thank you!"
"Our pleasure," Dawn interjected, "no payment necessary!"
"Hey, speak for yourself, Berlitz," the red head winked; the sound of the doorbell, cutting their conversation short.
"Oh my gosh! He's here, how do I look? HOW DO I LOOK?!" May expressed, panic evident in every word.
"Beautiful!" Caroline, Dawn and Misty shouted in unison, moving out of view from the front door as ordered by a nervous May; The brunette breathing a sigh of relief in response.
She walked over to the door slowly, her heels clacking against the tiles in the foyer of her family's home.
"Hi Brendan," she greeted warmly, smiling confidently in her date's direction.
"Hi beautiful, you ready?" Brendan replied, pulling a bunch of pink carnations out from the arm hidden behind his back, and giving them to May.
May hated carnations… but it was the thought that counted right?
"Oh they're lovely, thank you! Let me just put them over here… okay, all ready!" May passed the carnations to Caroline, blowing a kiss in the direction of her 'girl gang', before shutting the door behind her.
"Okay, Miss Maple- let's go!"
Helping her into his sportscar, Brendan shut the passenger door, before climbing into the vehicle himself.
With a turn of his key, the engine roared to life.
May was still smiling from ear to ear.
Best. Week. Ever.
…
"So… May? Why is it we've never spoken at school before. I find that so hard to believe…" Brendan piped up about five minutes into their journey.
May didn't exactly know how to answer him. What did he expect her to say… 'Oh up until a week ago I was obsessed with the kid across the street?! Please. How pathetic'.
"May?"
"Oh! Sorry, ummm- I-I'm not too sure. No one really notices me; uh- I just mean I spend so much of my time on the paper at school… I guess I haven't really been an easy one to catch?" May shrugged, clearly unsure if she'd delivered the right answer.
"Fair enough… school does get a bit like that sometimes. I understand,"
May smiled in response.
"But for the record… I always noticed you."
(At this statement, May was certain that her cheeks had changed in colouring; as crimson as her dress).
Brendan reached over taking her hand in his as he continued along the dimly-lit street.
(A burning face and a racing heart… this boy was going to kill her; Gosh, he was cute!)
The small talk continued naturally. Brendan asked her a few questions about her friends and her plans for after school (both of which she didn't really have much to say on) and then he spoke about Basketball… he really did seem to love the sport.
As he rambled on, May found herself staring out the window. It really was such a beautiful night. The moon was full and bright, the stars shimmering against a remarkable, blue night sky. The edge of the forest was visible from the moving car, causing May to smile a little as she caught a glimpse of the few Pokémon bounding among the greenery before her.
"Hey Brendan…" she spoke up, interrupting the boy's rant about how he'd scored the final basket in last season's championship game. He seemed a little put off, but smiled at her nonetheless.
"Yes gorgeous?" he enquired.
"Do you have a favourite Pokémon? You know, one you'd hope to own someday?" May asked, her eyes bright with wonder.
Brendan's face seemed to scrunch at her question.
"Nah… I'm not really a fan of Pokémon, they aren't really in my plan for after school. I'm going to pla-"
"Play basketball! Yes, you were saying…" May cut in. "That sounds wonderful," she continued, in the cheeriest tone she could muster.
Before she knew it, Brendan was on a roll again about his plans to attend college in Dewford Town, (because the beach was like his home- man!) and play for the Machamps in- yep, you guessed it- the college basketball team…
May nodded in understanding, her face painted with a look that said 'I'm listening', apart from her eyes, which were clearly darting in all directions of the forest surrounding them, in hopes to catch a look at the creatures that called it home.
Not a fan of Pokémon? She was honestly unsure how people couldn't love the little things. She had always dreamed of owning her own Pokémon, ever since she was a little girl. But then again, what could one expect from the daughter of a Pokémon Gym Leader.
May had been around 4 or 5 when a young lady named Lina had come to challenge her father at Petalburg Gym. She was so excited because her Dad had let her sit in on the battle, watching it from the sidelines. May had mentioned to her father that she wanted a Pokémon of her own and Norman thought she was old enough to see the responsibility of a trainer in battle. After Norman defeated her first Pokémon, a Tailow; Lina threw out her second pokéball. May's eyes lit up with joy when the ball exploded, a bright, white light emitting from inside it. When the light changed, the Pokémon's true identity was revealed… standing before her Dad's Vigoroth was a little, orange chick. "My first partner! Torchic! You're up!" Lina called; the little bird, chirping in determination. May was mesmerised by it. It was so tiny, yet so determined to win for it's trainer. The way Lina and Torchic worked together was inspiring; May longed for that feeling, of partnership, that no matter what, they were there for each other… They didn't end up winning the battle, but the way Lina had embraced her Torchic at the end, showed just how proud she was of it, anyway. From that day, May had dreamed of owning her own Pokémon, going on her own journey, her and her Pokémon as teammates- always.
May was so thankful when Brendan turned into the parking lot of Petalburg's Cinema. His revelation wasn't completely gone from her head, but at least a movie could distract her from it.
For the time being, at least.
…
The movie Brendan had picked was surprisingly good. May wasn't too surprised that the main character played Basketball (what was it with boys and balls, seriously?!), but it had a bit of romance and funny stuff, so she managed to keep watching. Her date had even wrapped his arm around her during the film, causing her to internally scream while the butterfrees filled her belly. Being the gentlemen that he was too, Brendan had paid for the entire date, despite May's constant protests.
When they returned home, the young brunette was a little upset that it was over so soon. While she was unbuckling her seatbelt, Brendan jumped from the car with the intention of opening May's door.
"Who said chivalry was dead" she thought, smiling to herself.
Walking her to her front door, Brendan cleared his throat.
"I had a really nice time with you tonight," he said, resulting in the colour to rise in May's cheeks once again.
"So did I, thank you again for paying…"
"That's okay! The gentlemen always pays."
May giggled at his words.
"I hope that cute, little laugh means you'd like to do it again sometime?" he added with a wink.
A second date? Surely, she was dreaming! A nod solidified her answer, Brendan grinning in return.
"Great… I better go…" he voiced, ironically moving closer to her.
"Yeah, maybe you should…" (and closer) …
"Well, I guess… hmm…" (and closer) …
"…"
And before she knew it, the gap had closed and his lips where on hers. She wasn't complaining though, he was a fantastic kisser! She was living every girl's fantasy at this current moment. Gently, he deepened the kiss, a soft moan leaving May's mouth. It wasn't her first kiss per se (that's a whole other story), but it certainly was different. Desperate for oxygen, she broke their contact, beaming brightly in his direction.
"I'm sorry. I had to do that… Goodnight gorgeous…"
Watching him return to his car May waved softly. It was only when he had finally driven away from her home, that she brought her fingertips to her lips as if to savour the last few moments of their date.
Brendan Williams. THE Brendan Williams, had just kissed her.
Dawn and Misty were going to lose their shit.
Again, Best. Week. Ever.
…
Eyes wide and face white, Drew took in the sight before him. Innocent little April caught lip locking with the biggest man whore at school. His stomach dropped as Brendan wrapped an arm around her waist, the kiss continuing for what felt like forever. Pulling his curtains shut aggressively, the teen threw himself back onto his bed.
He didn't know why it bothered him so much, he didn't have feelings for her or anything… Heck! He didn't even like her all that much, but something in him hated the sight and he'd do anything to get rid of it.
Pulling his phone from his pocket, he dialled a familiar number.
"Oak. Call the boys and get over here. My parents are out of town and we're getting wasted."
With a click of a button, his Friday night plans were set.
And he could not fucking wait.
…
Chapter Two!
This one was a little hard to write at first, but bear with me, I have some epic plans for this fic.
