Chapter Forty one: How I got into yet another fight or… How started to dream a dream…
About thirteen days into the boot camp all of us had decided to have a break. Or more accurately our squad was threatened by the doctor "squad", to take a day off. Honestly none of us were brave enough to argue with any of them. Currently we were all lying down on the ground of the butterfly estate dojo. None of us actually knew what to do. Even Shura, Mukago, Aoi, and the butterfly girls had joined us. Though Shura was moving her arms, if one looked closely they could see the barely visible strings attached to her fingers.
Apparently when she wasn't being experimented on, her own words not mine, she was usually using her blood demon art to actually help clean most of the estates. She stated that since her strings were strong enough to hold people, they could be used to hold cleaning tools. Shura actually took a liking to using her skills in such ways, something about using her skills for something good. Personally I had to admire her for it. Unfortunately that still left the rest of us completely bored out of skulls. Well besides Kyojuro, but he wasn't there. Instead he was hanging out with his father, something a lot of us were jealous about. Though in his place was Senjuro. That was funny for at least a little bit seeing how the butterfly girls seemed to gravitate towards the kid.
As we stared right up at the ceiling I sighed. "I miss T.V's…" Everyone looked at me confused before I waved them off. "An invention that will be made in a few years, don't worry too much about it." As those in the know nodded their heads in understanding, the butterfly girls and Shura only looked confused. However they didn't question me and instead Shura spoke up.
"Oh! How about we tell stories? That sounds like fun!" I was about to speak up when those of my squad turned to me.
""""""NO!"""""" All of them even Mitsuri were apparently still traumatized from my last story. Those who hadn't heard my stories could only look at me warily.
"It was just the one story! Jeez talk about Cthulhu and everyone freaks out."
Kiyo spoke up at this point. "What's a Cthulhu?" Again I was about to speak up when Mitsuri covered my mouth with her hand.
"Nothing you need to worry about sweetie~!" She then glared murderously at me. "Isn't the right Michael Kun?" I couldn't help but gulp and nod my head furiously as she smiled sweetly. "Good~!" She then turned back to the ceiling. "Now does anyone else have any GOOD stories to tell?" After a moment no one spoke up, ironically too bored to think of anything. "We have become boring people!" A few of us couldn't help but snort at her comment, I of course being one of them. This caused her to pout. "It's not funny!"
Waving a hand at her Aoi placated the love Hashira. "Hai hai… it was just the way you said it that was funny. Though I've realized that we seriously need to get ahold of some games. Just we're usually so busy that we don't have time for them normally. Guess we're paying the price for that now eh?" Everyone even Shura nodded at that.
At few moments Mukago sat up. "UGH! Why did Kocho Sama have to ban even magic practice?! She's even banned me and Aoi Chan from the medical room! And that's where all our textbooks are! I'm honestly starting to think I should've gone with Rengoku Kun, least that would've been interesting." As everyone else agreed, I personally picked up the "Rengoku Kun" part of her sentence. So deciding to alleviate my boredom I did what I usually did nowadays… tease everyone who had any sort of love interest!
So with a grin I turned to her. "Oh? What was that I heard?" She looked at me a bit confused but seemed a bit wary of my grin. "Normally for one of his status you'd add Sama, like you did for Shinobu San. But you added Kun for my sensei? Any reason for that Mukago Chan?" She gave me a rather strained smile as everyone turned to her.
"Oh he's just been a good friend is all. Nothing to worry about master." Seeing what I was doing Mitsuri spoke up with a grin.
"Really? And all those times I've seen you staring at him dreamily? I'm sure that meant absolutely nothing am I right?" As everyone besides Inosuke, who had fallen asleep, turned to Mukago she made some kind of squeaking noise.
That's when without realizing it Senjuro hit the final nail in her coffin. "So you like Onii Sama? Hmm with all the time you've spent with us and around him, I don't think that'd be too bad." My poor first knight looked like she was about to pass out, her face now equaling Tanjiro's and Kanao's the first time we really teased them. Fortunately or rather unfortunately for the former demon turned dragon, Shura decided to intervene on her friend's behalf.
"I personally don't think there's anything to tease her about." Mukago looked at her friend in hope, before having that hope crushed with Shura's next words. "She's beautiful and he's handsome so I think they'd look great together~! There's nothing to be ashamed about with that!" Poor Mukago's jaw dropped at her friend's words. Now deep down she knew that her air head of a best friend, honestly didn't mean to make things worse for her. Yet she still ended up doing so.
So with a twitchy left eye Mukago mentioned something that tweaked my interest. "Oh yeah?! How about you and the guy you were talking to the other day? You seemed pretty friendly with him if I do say so myself!" Now while Shura didn't blush nearly as hard as Mukago. A light dusting was visible over her pale skin.
"Oh… well… he was mostly just curious as to why I was there. Sure he did threaten to cut off my head, but if one thinks about it. That was a perfectly understandable response seeing how I'm still a demon." I desperately wanted to point out how that was NOT! A normal response but let her continue. "He was quite nice after I explained the situation. Haven't seen him sense though, so I'm sure we can't count my interaction the same as yours. At least you have some romance in your life. You should be happy for it~." As it turned out, Shura was a lot more pure now that she wasn't under Muzan's influence.
Something that seemed to grate on Mukago's nerves. "You're too precious for this world you know that?" Poor Shura had no idea what she was talking about so instead simply smiled. That did it for the dragon doctor, and Mukago closed her eyes and sighed. All the while pinching the bridge of her nose, for without even knowing she did so. Shura the spider demon had won this round. That's when the door to the dojo opened. As one we turned to the doors and looked at the two figures entering.
While I recognized them Mitsuri was the one who greeted them. "OH! Obanai San! Shinazugawa San! What are you two doing here?" The both of them were silent for a moment, instead looking at all of us in confusion. After a moment the snake Hashira spoke up.
"Why are all of you on the floor?" He was answered by a puffy cheeked Mitsuri.
"Because we're bored! Shinobu Chan threatened us if we did any sort of training! And Kyojuro San left us, and Michael Kun's stories are too horrifying to even attempt to listen to! So we got nothing to do!" Her fellow Hashira could only stare at us strangely, but after a moment Sanemi turned to me.
"While I can understand following Kocho's orders. Why would that bas…" He trailed off when he saw the young ears in the room. Understanding what would happen if he cursed, and they asked Shinobu about what the word meant. He decided to censor himself. "I mean jerk's stories be horrifying? That can't be that bad! Seriously you're a Hashira, what could scare you?" Those who had heard my stories before looked at me in horror as I grinned.
I had just found my next bit of entertainment. "Do you really want to know?" Apparently even a Hashira could be unnerved, because those two were now looking at me warily. However they stood strong and nodded, also seeing what was about to happen. Those who knew grabbed those who didn't and ran away. This did nothing to alleviate the snake and wind Hashira's worries. "Alright! Tell me… have you ever heard of the rats in the walls?"
I have ascended to an eldritch line break!
The next day was a began a bit strange. Seeing how only Tanjiro and myself were invited to the Hashira meeting, we weren't even told the reason behind that. Although upon arriving I saw that a certain male pair looked rather tired. They were also glaring at me murderously. Turns out my stories, were enough to make them completely forget the reason they came to the dojo in the first place. Also looking at them then I gave them nightmares. Both Mitsuri and Tanjiro looked at me as I was evil. After a moment Obanai spoke up at the master, still respectful, just rather grumpy for what I did.
"My I ask the reason as to why they are here once again? For while I'm sure you do have your reasons, the fact remains that they are not Hashira."
Sanemi was quick to back him up. "Respectfully I must agree with Obanai on this one." Deciding to cut them some slack I spoke up.
"I must also agree with them. In fact I've recently made a joke about how many of these Hashira meetings I've attended lately." The two looked over to me, a bit surprised that I agreed with them. As if sensing the interaction, Kagaya smiled with a light chuckle.
That's when he dropped a bomb on everyone. "Actually after a bit of discussion, as well as looking at the rules of the corps. We have decided to promote both Tanjiro and Michael to the rank of Hashira." There was silence for a bit when a number of people yelled out, Tanjiro and I being amongst them.
"""WHAT?!"""
"But they've barely been with the corps?!"
"HAHA! Good work my Tsuguko!"
"YEE~! Tanjiro Kun~! Michael Kun~! Congrats!"
"Who are they again?"
"I am most pleased with the increase of our ranks. I will continue to pray for their success."
"Ara ara~."
"So flamboyant!" Yeah I'll leave all of you to sort out who said what. Only one who didn't say anything was Giyu, instead he looked over to us with a proud smile. After a few moments of chatter the master held up his hand, this calmed everyone down as he began to explain himself.
"I'm sure while some wish to congratulate them, all of you are curious as to why I made my decision." They nodded as he continued. "To simplify things… while all of the affectionately name kamaboko squad has ranked up. Amongst them it is only Tanjiro and Michael who have actually bested lower moons in combat. They were also instrumental in beating back the two upper moons they've encountered. Now it has long been a rule that when a swordsman defeated a moon, they would rise to the rank of Hashira. However I had held off for these two, mainly desiring for them to gain more strength and experience. I believe that they have now at least made the minimum for Hashira."
That got everyone thinking when Mitsuri, who was sitting between us, hugged the two of us. "After all the hard work these two have put in they certainly deserve it. Besides that! Tanjiro Kun was also the first to unlock his demon slayer mark. In fact if he used it I'm sure he could give a number of us a run for our money~." She then looked over to me. "As for Michael Kun, he was the first to while not kill, defeat a lower moon all by himself. Plus he has whatever that form that turns his flames black." As Tanjiro blushed from the closeness, I laughed a bit. Or at least I did until I felt a huge amount of bloodlust be directed at me.
Looking around I saw that it was coming from Obanai. It didn't take me long to figure out why that might have been, though what Mitsuri told me earlier helped as well. I couldn't help but sigh at how oblivious Mitsuri was. I had honestly thought Kyojuro, Giyu, and Shinobu were bad. But at least they weren't actively seeking a relationship.
Oh Mitsuri… to not see how the guy is obviously in love with you, yet have the desire to get married. Guess that's par for the course these days. Shaking my head I gave the snake Hashira an apologetic smile, this only made him narrow his eyes further at me. I think I might be in trouble for that later. Deciding to hope for the best I looked back at Kagaya.
He gestured a bit with his hand before speaking up once more. "Mitsuri is correct in her words. Is there anyone here who has any objections?"
I honestly should've expected the snake Hashira to pull something. "Before we induct them as Hashira I would personally like to test them. To see if they truly are of Hashira level, or if they've only gotten lucky." Everyone even Mitsuri looked rather amicable to the idea, me and Tanjiro on the other hand could only look at each nervously. It would seem as if we were about to fight arguably, the third or fourth strongest in the corps. So yeah there was some cause for worry.
After a moment of thinking Kagaya nodded. "I suppose that is a fair idea, and shall test them after the meeting. Though I have full faith in them, and even if they do not win they will receive the title of Hashira. Tanjiro shall be now known as the Sun Hashira, and Michael shall be known as the shadow flame Hashira for his dark flames. Now to move onto the crux of this meeting, Kyojuro please tell everyone what you've learned of the mark." That's when things became serious as he told them what Val'gin told us. As he finished everyone looked worried, though none more than Shinobu who was now holding Giyu's hand.
It was as if he would turn into a demon any moment. "Did he tell you of a way to prevent this? Well without relying on Michael Kun's powers that is?" Kyojuro shook his head sadly at the insect Hashira's question. "I see… then I will have to conduct more research on the blood of those who are marked." She then looked at Tanjiro with a look that made him gulp. "I hope you don't mind if I use your blood as well Tanjiro Kun~?" As he shook his head much the room's occupants looked at the kid in pity.
That's when Giyu spoke up. "I will stay human." Everyone looked at him as he elaborated. "I will stay human unless I absolutely have to become a dragon. For now I think while everyone should still gain the mark. That we should limit it even more to the direst of emergencies." Kagaya nodded his head to this.
"That is an excellent idea, one I hope everyone adheres to. I don't want any of you to needlessly risk yourselves. Those of you who wish to become dragons must also understand the sacrifice involved. For while you would break past your current limits, and continue to grow stronger and faster. You will sacrifice your mortality." Everyone nodded seriously as he spoke to me. "I'm sorry to have to put so much on your shoulder's Michael, but I wish for you to turn anyone who truly wishes it."
Bowing my head slightly I agreed to his request, though I couldn't help but sound a bit upset about it. "Hai… I understand Oyakata Sama." He nodded before speaking to everyone else.
"Now let's move on from this topic, there is still much more to discuss before Iguro tests our new Hashira." As everyone gave a "Hai!" of agreement I looked down at my clenched hands. I honestly didn't want to become the reason everyone would outlive their loved ones. However at this point I didn't have much of a choice. I just hoped everyone would think it wasn't worth it. However knowing my luck I knew that was not to be. So with a sigh I went back to listening and participating in the meeting. There was a lot of logistics to go over. On the plus side as two brand new kinds of Hashira we got our own estates.
However Tanjiro and I decided against two separate ones, instead agreeing to share one. If only since as I didn't believe I'd stick around all too much after Muzan was slain. Everyone could see the pragmatism in that and agreed to it, everyone also agreed to Tanjiro's request on not making it too large. So instead of it being full sized, it would be three fourths as big. Tanjiro tried to protest to only having it at least half as big, but he was denied. Much to the amusement of a number of people there.
That's when Sanemi actually gave Tanjiro some good advice. "Oi! Will you stop with the humble act already! I get it! You aren't used to having something like this all to yourself, I certainly wasn't. However in this case take it as it is and use it for whatever you like. Hell use it to house all of your buddies and family or something. Just man up and accept the gift Oyakata Sama said you've earned!" After a moment Tanjiro nodded and turned to Kagaya.
"Thank you Shinazugawa San. Oyakata Sama I'm sorry for my rude behavior. I will accept anything you're willing to build for me." Kagaya smiled warmly at the kid before nodding.
"Then we shall build you one of three fourths the size of the other estates. Now how much would you two like to be paid?" It was then that I remembered that Hashira get whatever they want.
So before Tanjiro could speak up I reached over Mitsuri and covered his mouth. "After doing some calculations in my head, and with them being right as always. I believe just seven hundred thousand a year will suffice." Everyone looked at us with some surprise. Not that I blamed them, most went for a million or at least eight hundred K. So seeing the unasked question I explained myself. "I decided to add fifty thousand for every rank we've surpassed. Also since we're pretty much sharing the place, as well as being in the same squad. I thought seven hundred would be appropriate."
That got nods from everyone as Kagaya spoke up once more. "Once again you give a practical idea. So for now on, or until you change your minds that shall be your yearly pay." Letting go of Tanjiro who I knew would be fine with just the pay he had been getting, I bowed my head in thanks. Tanjiro also did so though he gave me the stink eye. I only grinned at the kid, making him sigh. It truly had been a good day.
I have ascended to an eldritch line break!
Or at least that's what I had thought until we entered the Butterfly estate Dojo. Our audience to the side as Obanai faced us, and while I couldn't see under the bandages he used to cover his mouth. I could just tell that he was grinning, both his turquoise and yellow eyes practically smiling. Unsheathing our swords Tanjiro and I prepared for combat, we knew that this wasn't going to be easy. Unsheathing his own sword, which looked more like an Indonesian Kris than a katana, I observed the blade. His sword looking like a slithering snake, and his tsuba was circular, golden in color with snakes connected by plants engraved on it.
On the side was the kanji for akki messatsu, or destroy demons. Made me wonder if we would get new engraving on our swords, all the other Hashira had engravings. So I didn't exactly see why we wouldn't get any. Shaking my head I prepared to put all my training to hard work. Ignoring the jealous yells of Inosuke, and the cheers from the rest of our friends, not that I was trying to be rude. I simply knew that this guy was no push over, and would require everything I could give.
Looking over to Tanjiro I came up with a game plan. "Truthfully under normal circumstances I doubt we'd stand a chance here. However if I distract him for a bit, and then you use your mark, we might be able to at least pull out a draw." Tanjiro nodded as I sheathed my sword, preparing to use my now perfected tenth form. Thankfully only those of my squad knew of the technique, having simply not mentioned it during the meeting.
However I knew the snake Hashira was no fool, a fact that was further reinforced by his narrowed eyes. His snake watching us carefully as Shinobu raised her hand. Being the main doctor it was decided that she would be the referee.
"And go!" Chopping her hand down the fight had begun, and I immediately sprang into action.
Ju no Kata Senko Moyasu! As I flashed forward I could tell that everyone not in the know were quite surprised. However Obanai proved how he obtained his position by blocking my sword.
"I'm actually impressed, not many are able to create their own forms. Though I can see some similarity with thunder breathing, a fine idea to look at other styles for inspiration." He then narrowed his eyes. "However…" Pushing me back he struck at me with amazing speed. "You still have much to learn. Go no Kata En'en Chōda." As he unleashed his fifth form on me, winding his sword as a snake came from it. I used another form to counter his attack.
Shi no kata Sei En no Uneri! As I swung my sword I managed to block all of his slashes. Thankfully that's when Tanjiro quite literally jumped in, his mark fully active now as he swung down on Obanai as he spiraled in the air.
"Hino Kami Kagura! Kiki Onkō!" As the burning slash surrounded our foe he used another form himself. Also jumping into the air to counter Tanjiro.
"Shi no Kata Keija Sōsei." Twin snakes then collided with Tanjiro's fire, throwing them both back. Though the snake pillar landed on his feet and Tanjiro had roll backwards to his. Hoping to take advantage of this I rushed in, slashing upwards.
Ni no kata Nobori En Ten! Moving to the side Obanai managed to dodge as Tanjiro rushed in. Together we attacked our fellow Hashira at the same time. His skill with the blade showed through as he managed to hold us both off. As we fought though I felt myself slipping, both Tanjiro and Obanai were just so much stronger than I was. It was frustrating and I led me to attack with more ferocity then I usual. My dragon side was starting to take over as I felt the need to dominate the fight.
At the look on my face Obanai narrowed his eyes as he deflected one of my strikes. He then slammed his left palm into my chest, knocking the wind out of me and sending me flying. Tanjiro twitched wanting to see if I was alright, however he kept himself focused and continued attacking. I was actually proud of him for that, and even our opponent seemed a bit impressed as I struggled to get up.
That hurts… Getting to my feet I looked forward, gritting my teeth as the two continued to increase the pace of the fight. Sure Tanjiro at this point was technically stronger, however Obanai was simply skilled enough to keep up with him. Made me realize what an outlier I was in this fight. Dammit! If only I had access to the mark, or at least whatever allowed me to kill Grel'Slyfer by surprise! Then I'd win this easily! Gritting my teeth I shook my head. Don't think like that! Looking forward I decided to change roles in this fight. For while I came close to unlocking my mark during these last two weeks. I didn't want to try my luck at the moment.
Instead I decided to support Tanjiro in the spar. I started doing so by flashing forward with my tenth form. Using it to strike at Obanai while getting behind him, after defending from my attack his eyes widened upon seeing the position he was in.
"Clever." I couldn't help but grin as I used my first form to increase the speed of my attack. Twisting out of the way he deflected an incoming attack from Tanjiro as he back away. "I see you've calmed down now at least. Your attacks are back to being precise." I held my sword in front of me as I looked at Tanjiro from the corner of my eye. He was starting to breathe a little heavier now, the mark starting to take its toll. Letting out some air I raised my sword, covering it in flames.
Go no kata Enko! Unleashing a number of slashes I formed the flame tiger. As it rushed forward so too did I and Tanjiro.
To counter this Obanai used another form. "Ichi no Kata Idagiri." Slashing his sword a snake collided with my tiger. At the same time Tanjiro used another form of his own.
"Hino Kami Kagura! Enbu!" As he began striking with his blade lit on fire I joined in, blocking when he couldn't, and attacking when he was defending. Together we started pushing the snake Hashira back, finally in working sync. However Obanai proved his worth by being able to keep up with us. His swordsmanship was peerless, and his strength was enough to not be outclassed by Tanjiro. Though like my favorite buddy, he was starting to tire.
However as we jumped back to escape one of his forms, I could see that Tanjiro was tiring much quicker. I knew I needed to make a decision, so with a chuckle I did something no one expected. I sheathed my sword and stood up straight. I then put a hand on Tanjiro's shoulder.
"I think we should stop here." Both looked to me confused as I elaborated on my choice. "Look while we are all tiring, it is Tanjiro who is doing so the fastest. The mark may allow him to keep up with you, however it drains his strength a lot faster. Secondly I'm playing second fiddle to him right now, and without his mark, not only would Tanjiro be out of commission. But I would have to fight you alone, and I'm not confident in my abilities to do so. So I say we call this spar your win before something happens." As Obanai hummed in agreement Tanjiro let his mark return to its dormant state.
"I guess you have a point there." He then turned to Obanai and bowed his head. "Thank you for the spar Obanai San." Smiling I copied Tanjiro and Obanai scratched his left cheek before speaking.
"It's alright… I suppose the spar was good enough, and you two are at least minimum Hashira level." He then looked at us sternly as we stood straight up. "However! Don't go slacking off now! You two still have a long way to go." We couldn't help but salute our fellow Hashira.
""Hai!"" He humphed before sheathing his sword and walking away, as he left so too did most of the other Hashira. Leaving us with the others to run up and congratulate us. Kanao even kissed Tanjiro full on the lips. The poor kid almost fainted from the interaction. That got a laugh out of everyone. As for me I simply smiled before looking at my right hand.
I need to get stronger.
I have ascended to an eldritch line break!
The next eight days consisted of some more training, as well as some construction… which was also used for training. The construction we were working on was actually mine and Tanjiro's estate. An estate we ended up calling the Dragon sun estate, partially to be funny but also to pay tribute to what we were. Though Nezuko and Kanao, had a few things to say about how some of the rooms would look like. Reasoning being that Kanao said she was planning on moving in eventually, and Nezuko said she was Tanjiro's sister so she would be living with him.
We also made sure to put in three different baths, at the insistence of the girls. One for men, one for women, and one for both. Something about how they'd have families one day, so it would just make things easier. Another thing they added to the plans were rooms for Inosuke, Zenitsu, Eris, and Cassandra. Though everyone knew the last two would probably move into my room. They were mostly there for formality. Beyond that they asked for enough guest rooms for all of our friends.
I was the one who asked for a large yard and an even larger dojo. In fact most of the estate consisted of those two things. Though we did have to hide the fact, that it was now only an eighth smaller than a regular estate from Tanjiro. Me and the teen girls decided it was something he didn't need to know about. Finally we ended up getting another mission; however I couldn't help but look at Tanjiro incredulously when he asked a question.
"What's a train?" In fact everyone but Nezuko and Inosuke looked at him strangely. "What? I seriously don't know."
Nezuko nodded before speaking up herself. "Same here actually." Inosuke blew steam from his mask as he nodded furiously. Sighing I decided to explain it to the mountain bumpkins as simply as possible.
"Alright, a train is basically a large metal vehicle contraption that runs on steam. The steam powers the vehicle and moves it forward on train tracks. The tracks keep the train from falling over. There's more to it but that's basically the gist of it." The mountain trio hummed in interest, now a bit excited to see what a train looked like. I for one was simply interested in seeing a steam engine. Mostly because I hadn't had the chance to see one in person till then.
I would also admit to being a fame of steam punk. It had always interested me to read how some people could be so creative with steam power. So I was also looking forward to this particular mission. Unfortunately for our little gang Mitsuri was given another mission that depressed her a bit. Each of us got a hug from her and we parted ways wishing each other good luck. To compensate for her lack of presence we'd be meeting three others at the station we were heading to. I had no idea who these three were, but I was hoping for two of them to be Cassandra and Eris. I was really starting to miss my two lovers.
Thankfully the trip there was only two days, and Tanjiro was the first to comment with awe. "Sugoi! This is amazing! I've never seen anything this big in my whole life! Not even the trees we cut down before can come close to how long this machine is!" I couldn't help but smile at his attitude before speaking up.
"It is rather impressive, this Mugen train, however we need to hide our swords now. Because as unfortunate as it is, it's not like we have permission to carry them around." Everyone around me agreed and hid their swords either behind their backs, or within their haoris. Though being the tallest there I had to hide Inosuke's for him. His shirtless body doing him no favors this time around. After getting our train tickets we had an hour before the train left. So instead of getting on we instead explored the train station a bit.
As I wandered around I heard two sets of shouts. ""Michael Kun!"" Turning around I was nearly tacked hugged to the ground by two rather beautiful women. Instantly knowing who they were I hugged them back.
Smiling brightly I kissed their foreheads. "I can't begin to express how much I missed the both of you." Cassandra and Eris giggled a bit before Eris spoke up.
"Not as much as we missed you I'm sure."
"Yep~." I couldn't help but snort as Cassandra agreed with Eris. Though I still kept on hugging, even leading the way towards a bench. As we sat down we began talking, with Cassandra taking the lead. "For your information, we got your recent letters so I do believe congratulations are in order." Eris nodded her head before hugging my neck.
"Oh yeah it is! Just a year out in the field and you're already a Hashira! Seems like we picked a badass as our boyfriend~." I couldn't help but rub the back of my head sheepishly as I spoke up.
"Well Tanjiro also became a Hashira. So the kid also deserves quite a bit of praise." They nodded at that but then kissed me on the lips, once more partially shutting me down. As they pulled back Eris spoke to me softly.
"While it may be true that Tanjiro, that adorable little gentleman, has also become a Hashira. He isn't our boyfriend. Nor the one we are in love with."
Cassandra nodded before adding her own two cents. "What Eris said is true, and while I do love Tanjiro as a little brother. You will always be our first priority. So take some pride in yourself." I couldn't help but hug them a little closer, a bright smile on my face.
"Thanks you two, I'm lucky to have the both of your support." Once more they smiled quite radiantly at me, then after a bit of simply enjoying each other's company. We began talking about the estate being built. As well as what kind of engraving I should put on my sword. Finally it was time to go and we left for the train station.
I have ascended to an eldritch line break!
It only took us a few seconds to make it back to the train platform. However when Zenitsu saw Eris he gulped a bit as she wrapped an arm around him. "Hey there otouto~! So I heard through my manly dragon of a lover that you are with Nezuko Chan now~. I hope you're treating her well?" Zenitsu laughed nervously as Nezuko came to his defense.
"He's actually been rather wonderful~." She then showed off the bracelet he got her. "Even got me this a bit ago. Also since we got together he hasn't flirted with anyone else." Eris nodded appreciatively at that as we got on the train.
"Good for you!" As they were talking about each other Cassandra was telling the rest of us something.
"I feel I should warn you, that the guy who's arm Tanjiro broke back at final selection is also here. However he simply got on the train, not even bothering with the two of us." Now it was time for me and Kyojuro to be confused. We had no idea that Tanjiro had broken somebodies arm.
Turning to Tanjiro I swiftly asked him about it. "You broke someone's arm? What did they do to piss you of all people off?" Tanjiro scratched his cheek sheepishly before answering.
"Well he was grabbing one of Oyakata Sama's children by the hair. He was pretty impatient about getting his nichirin blade, so I grabbed his arm and forced him to let go. I mean I did warn him but he didn't budge so I just sort of did it." Those of us who knew him couldn't help but nod in understanding. It was certainly something the kid would do. As we walked up to our ticketed seats Tanjiro, Kyojuro, and I helped a few people with their luggage. Eventually we made our way up to the third car where we found and sat in our seats. That's when we saw the last of our crew; he was sitting down and eating something.
Seeing him I decided to be at least friendly and walk up to him. "Hey there, guessing you're the final member of our assigned group?" He turned and glared at me, his scarred face making not doing him any favors. Sighing I held my hands up. "Yeesh just trying to be friendly." The kid rolled his eyes before speaking rather roughly to me.
"Don't care about your "friendliness", and I don't care that you're on the mission. Just stay out of my way." It was unfortunate for him that Eris overheard him, and being who she was she didn't let him get away with his rudeness. So quickly slapped him over the head. "Ow! What the hell woman?!" He quickly shrank under her stare. Truly she could be intimidating when she wanted to be.
"Listen here buster! You're on this team so you will be working with us. That doesn't mean you have to like us, but it does mean you have to play nice! Now you're going to apologies for being rude or else I'm going to shove my boot up where the sun don't shine! Am I clear?" For a moment his jaw didn't work so she yelled at him. "I SAID AM I CLEAR?!" Quickly finding his words he nodded furiously at her.
"Crystal clear ma'am!" She then smiled a backed up while gesturing to me, knowing what he had to do the poor kid bowed his head a bit. "I'm so sorry for my rude behavior." Taking pity on the poor lad, I simply patted his shoulder while giving him a look of understanding. That's when Tanjiro walked up and bowed his own head.
"While it's been a while I am sorry for what I did back at final selection. However I am glad to see you doing well." A bit surprised the kid not really knowing what to say instead nodded in acceptance. Laughing Kyojuro slapped them both on the back before sitting down.
"It is good to see old grievances being put to rest! Now how about you introduce yourself young man?" For a moment the kid seemed a bit surprised to see the Hashira but recovered and said his name.
And boy did his name surprise us. "Names Shinazugawa Genya, the wind Hashira's younger brother." All of us blinked a squinted at him. "What?" Shaking my head I sat down on a seat to the side of his and Kyojuro's.
"Nothing, just surprised is all. Though now that I look at you I do see a resemblance." I then grinned at the kid before making a small joke. "However you do seem a tiny bit taller than him, and you still have a few more years to go. Can't wait to hold this over his head." Say what you want, I still had a bit of grudge against Sanemi for trying to attack Mukago.
Genya however could only look at me as if I were stupid. "Are you dumb or something? He's the second strongest in the corps! He'd probably just kill you for making a comment like that." I however just shrugged.
"Eh won't be the first time we've fought. And I'm much stronger now than I was then, so it won't be such an easy fight." Poor Genya only looked more confused at that, but decided to scoff and turn towards the window.
"Whatever man, it's your funeral." After a moment Kyojuro spoke up a bit confused.
"You know… I've known Shinazugawa for a while now, but he's never mentioned that he's had a younger brother." Genya flinched at that before calmly waving him off.
"Honestly we don't really talk with or about each other. But enough about that, mind telling me why a Hashira is here?" Me and Tanjiro, who was now sitting now sitting in front of me, looked at each other. We honestly didn't know whether or not we should tell him we were Hashira as well.
Unfortunately that choice was taken from us as Cassandra sat to my left. "Actually there are three Hashira on this mission. Though Tanjiro Kun and Michael Kun have just barely gotten their ranks." Genya froze before slowing turning to us, his anger quite clearly palpable as Kanao sat between him and Tanjiro.
Looking at me he spoke up. "I'm sorry but what the hell?! I didn't see Michael at my final selection so I don't know how long he's been at this." He then turned to Tanjiro who flinched back. "But I saw that bastard there! How in the hell did you become a Hashira so quickly huh?! I've been working my ass off over here! And you're the one who's become a Hashira! What the hell?!" Before we could say anything Kyojuro spoke up, his tone rather stern as he addressed the fouled mouth teen.
"They have more than earned their positions! Not only have they both defeated Kizuki on their own, but they've been enormous boons when fighting the higher ranks! Their strength is not to be questioned, am I understood?!" After a moment Genya tsked before turning towards the window again.
"Sure whatever." I couldn't help but sigh at the kid's attitude. He honestly reminded me of a mini Sanemi, and seeing how he was his younger brother I wasn't that surprised about it.
As Eris sat to my right she whispered to me. "Sheesh what a brat am I right?" I sighed but couldn't help but nod my head. After that we all found seats and starting talking, waiting for the train to depart. Though I for one decided to go over some strategies.
"Alright, so we all know people have been going missing on this train. Even the slayers sent here have gone missing. Unfortunately that's not much to go on, anyone have any idea as to what has been happening?" While Genya was brooding I could tell he was at least paying attention. However neither he nor anyone else had any idea on what was happening. As the train started to move I turned to Tanjiro. "Can you smell anything at least?"
Taking a moment to sniff the air he frowned. "While I can tell there are demons around, I can't seem to pinpoint their location." I couldn't help but sigh at that, even using my eyes couldn't see anything around me. If only I looked at something a bit smaller. Then maybe we could've avoided what happened next.
"Tickets! Tickets please." As the ticket puncher came around we handed out tickets in and they were punched. Immediately I felt something off, as if some kind of veil was being placed over my mind. I wasn't experienced enough to understand what was happening. So fell asleep as my girls leaned into me. Around me I could see that the others were also falling asleep. With Tanjiro being the last to lose consciousness, thus I could only say one thing.
"Oh kami dammit…" Then I too was forced to close my eyes. Next I opened them I had a hand on my sword and turned around, needless to say I was confused, especially when I heard a voice I didn't expect to hear again.
"Michael! Get back inside! It's time for dinner!" I could feel my heart racing as I slowly turned around. Standing on a familiar patio, in front of a familiar house, was a familiar older woman.
After a few moments of what felt like an eternity as I tried to move my jaw, I finally managed to squeak out one word. "Mom?"
I have ascended to an eldritch line break!
Argentum: And cliffhanger!
Zenitsu: Just like that?! What about us all falling asleep?!
Enmu: Your welcome for your wonderful dreams.
Genya: This is going to suck.
Grel'Slyfer: Probably.
Tanjiro: I know it originally sucked for me… had to kill myself way too many times.
Zenitsu: I just fought in my sleep.
Enmu: Now that was annoying.
Grel'Slyfer: Wasn't your death more annoying?
Enmu: Fair enough.
Genya: What am I going to dream about? In fact what is everyone else going to dream about?!
Argentum: Nope! That would be entering spoiler territory. And I won't be going there.
Tanjiro: Fair enough, though I do wonder how much my dream will change.
Argentum: Well you'll find out next time. Now Genya! Finish this here chapter off please.
Genya: Sure. This has been a Dark Guard production now signing off.
Everyone: Goodbye!
