It was headline news.
Peter Pettigrew, a man many believed had been killed by Black that fateful day, was the true traitor of the Potters. Amelia had force fed him veritaserum to find why he had stayed in rat form for years. After that the dicta-quill practically flew off the page as Pettigrew spilled everything about his service to Voldemort.
And, thanks to the fact that Pettigrew fully admitted to the crime of betraying the Potters, Sirius was able to go to the Ministry for an actual trial. One that was a mere formality at this point.
Black innocent! Pettigrew to be charged with deaths of Potters and being an illegal animagi!
Harry put down his paper, smirking a bit. Hermione had been stuck between horrified and preening like a peacock after learning the news about Pettigrew. She was horrified, because she had changed clothes while that rat-man had been in the compartment while the boys were out in the loo, and preening because her cat had been one of the first to know something was very wrong with the rat.
Harry, on the other hand, was still trying to process the news that Black was his godfather, and once his mandatory rehabilitation was done with, he would be pushing for full custody.
Which left the question of what Harry and the pack were going to do in the meantime. No way was his so called aunt going to let a wolf pack near her house.
Fortunately an answer was presented to them before the final exams.
That answer was Remus Lupin.
Sirius Black had, in a fit of inspiration, gone straight to Privet Drive and gotten the custody papers signed a few days after being cleared of all charges. Petunia couldn't sign the papers fast enough, and all of Lily's old school things were packed up and given to the wizard.
Sirius had made an arrangement with Amelia Bones. In exchange for allowing Harry to stay with her and Susan on full moons, Remus was to have temporary custody until Sirius was 'fit' to take in his godson.
His reasoning was that Remus lived close to the woods, making it ideal for Harry's wolf pack to roam around without suspicion, as it was now clear that they intended to stick around him. It was highly unlikely a werewolf would be able to deal with five highly intelligent magical wolves long enough to infect the boy-who-lived, especially with how loyal the wolves were to the boy.
Apparently most of the Wizangamot agreed with this reasoning, as Kiba and Tsume alone had killed ten dementors, which were much more difficult than a lone werewolf.
Which was why Harry was grinning as Remus turned his trunk into a portkey which transported all of them straight to his cottage in the middle of a dense forest.
Kiba stared down Moony, and the werewolf stared back. It was the full moon, and as much as he would have wanted to stay, Harry had been dragged to Susan's house until morning.
Since he was not a normal boy, he didn't feel a shred of horror when Susan invited half of the girls in their year and one Luna Lovegood.
You are Alpha, said Moony.
"I am. I am called Kiba."
My human half calls me Moony.
"I am aware of this. Do you wish to be chained every moon, unable to sing?" asked Kiba.
I wish to be free, but my human side fears that I may hurt others. When I was with pack, I always followed the Alpha's decisions. Padfoot would never allow me to harm others, even if they were prey.
"You viewed Padfoot as Alpha, not Prongs?"
Prongs was prey. Padfoot was stronger than him.
Kiba considered this comment. Considering James Potter was a stag, a creature most wolves would take down and eat, he could understand where Moony was coming from. Leaving prey alone because the Alpha told him to was something he could believe, and Padfoot was a stronger fighter than Moony was, despite being a dog and not a wolf.
He idly wondered how Sirius would react to the news that Moony considered him the Alpha of their pack, not James. It would be amusing to see.
"Your human half wishes to join my pack. Padfoot has agreed to run with us, but I would need you to agree as well."
I want to be part of the pack again. I don't like being chained by potions or silver.
"If I speak to Remus, would you be willing to properly merge with him and become an animagus rather than a cursed beast?"
I could care less if I became an animagus form if it means that I will never be subjugated by that damn potion again.
"I will speak to Remus once the Moon has sung her song."
Moony bared his neck to Kiba, a sign of subservience in wolves. He was a Beta, and was not ashamed of this fact. Kiba lightly nipped him on the neck, and Moony left the room to see his new Pack. Remus had hoped his wolf half would agree to this, and he didn't like the potion anymore than his wolf did.
(Mostly because it tasted terrible, and the cost of it was far too high for him normally.)
"So Moony accepted the offer to join the pack? That's great!" said Sirius.
"Well, he also said that he viewed you as the Alpha, not James," said Kiba amused.
"But James was the leader of the Marauders! Half the crap we landed in was because of Potter luck!" protested Sirius.
"Yes, but Moony didn't acknowledge him as the alpha of your pack. He was a stag, and wolves eat stags. You, on the other hand, are a canine who has fought him before and won the battle. According to pack rules, fighting a wolf and winning more than once is a sign of an Alpha, which his wolf half was looking for. He couldn't accept James as Alpha because of his animal form, but you were the next best thing according to Moony," explained Kiba.
"He's right. A wolf would never accept a 'lesser' animal as Alpha. Even if this Prongs had beaten Moony before on his own, the fact that he wasn't a wolf or equal animal would have labeled him as prey. We could possibly accept a greater cat or another canine as an Alpha, they are hunters, but a stag or other herbivore would never be our leader," said Tsume.
Seeing Sirius still had trouble understanding, Harry put it another way.
"Think of it this way Sirius. There is a group of Slytherins and a lone Hufflepuff. They might accept the Hufflepuff as part of the group, but they would never allow him to lead it."
That cleared up his confusion. Kiba gave Harry an odd look.
"Slytherins are snakes, who eat small animals. Hufflepuffs are badgers which as far as I'm aware mostly eat plants and fish. They could coexist, but a snake would never consent to the same diet as a badger."
It was an argument that Kiba could understand.
"Which brings me to my next trick...Harry, this is for you," said Sirius, handing over a potion.
"What is this and why do I suddenly have the urge to flee before your insanity catches on?" asked Harry with a deadpan. Toboe and Remus snickered.
"It's the animagus potion, your dad and I took it when we were fourteen and it took us a year to get it right."
Harry looked at it askance, but drank it anyway. A few moments later there was a pop and a young wolf cub with green eyes and hair as black as Tsume was sitting on the floor very confused. A few seconds later Harry popped back to normal.
"I knew it," said Kiba.
"You knew his form was a wolf?" asked Sirius.
"I sensed it shortly after we were set free from that damn cage. I could tell Harry was a cub who was in desperate need of a pack, but I wasn't entirely sure. I knew he was human, but he had the feel of a wolf."
"And you didn't know why until you ran into me, right?" asked Sirius. Kiba nodded.
"So does this mean I have to learn how to become an animagi, or can I just use the same trick Kiba and the pack use?" asked Harry.
"That's a good question. I'm not entirely sure if you can change like we do, or what the consequences would be," admitted Kiba.
Their world had been a barren wasteland after all, and this was his first encounter with magic.
"Well, why not try both?" suggested Sirius.
For the next month and a half, Harry tried to become a wolf the way Sirius became a dog. He had partial success, but according to him it felt like something was missing. Something important.
So he tried it the way Kiba told him to. And he felt it was closer, but there was still something left out.
Finally they took a break for the Quidditch World Cup, which Tsume declined to go because of the noise level. He hated humans at the best of times, and only tolerated Sirius and Remus because they were now Pack. Harry was just a cub, and an Omega. If anything happened to Kiba or Tsume, then Harry was the next in line to lead. Mostly because Kiba had been training Harry in how to do so when it came to wolves and not humans.
Harry was smelling so many different things thanks to his partial wolf transformation. Remus and Sirius seemed to find it amusing to see the amazement in Harry's eyes as his senses expanded to take in the new information.
Because Harry was bringing three of the five wolves (Blue had asked to stay behind because of a headache) they had been given an area practically inside the woods, far away from most of the other camps.
According to Kiba, there was at least one flock of deer in there, as well as a few wolves who would be avoiding the humans on principle.
They set up the tent, which had an area that would allow the wolves to come and go without bothering the rest of them. Out of the three that went, only Toboe joined Harry and the rest. Kiba didn't feel like walking up that high and Hige complained about the smell of perfume some of the women were wearing on the way there.
Since they would be among humans, Toboe took his human disguise, altered slightly by the addition of a robe. As far as anyone was concerned, he was Remus' cousin. He certainly shared enough of the characteristics to make people believe it.
Harry felt his hackles rise when he saw Draco and Lucius Malfoy.
"Easy cub," whispered Remus.
"Something about him sets me off Remus," Harry whispered back.
"Wait until after the game, and then you can talk to Kiba about it."
"I really don't like them... the female I can tolerate I think," said Harry.
Sirius snorted.
"The female is my cousin Narcissa. I'll make sure you aren't near Draco or Lucy," said Sirius.
Harry sat between Narcissa Malfoy ne Black and Sirius. Surprisingly, he got along with Draco's mother better than he did Draco.
Probably because he rather enjoyed her acid wit, even if she wasn't a Quidditch fan.
When the Veela came out, Harry was unaffected, as was Toboe and Remus. Sirius was drooling, but that was about it.
"What was that all about? And why are most of the Weasly males acting like idiots?" asked Harry, blinking.
"Those were Veela. Think sirens, only instead of singing they use allure. When you piss them off they turn into something akin to a harpy that throw flames," explained Remus.
"Weird. Wait, why weren't you affected like Sirius?"
"Most likely for the same reason you and Toboe were unaffected. Kiba's training," said Remus. Which was partly true. Because of the difference in species, wolves were simply unaffected by Veela allure. Sirius, being a dog, was only partly affected.
Toboe had a different theory.
"I think it's cause we're more affected by Lunar flowers. Wolves are more in tune with nature, so fire-elements like Veela don't affect us as strong as a they would a human."
Seeing their confusion, Toboe tried a different route.
"Wolves and canines are more Earth and Wind oriented, whereas Veela are Fire. We simply don't mesh easily. Sirius, however, is a Water element."
That at least made sense.
They rather enjoyed the game...the after party, not so much.
"What in blazes is that racket?" demanded Kiba.
"Death Eaters. The ones that manages to escape what they had coming," said Sirius sourly.
"What do we do?" asked Toboe nervously.
"There are wolves deeper in. I've been meaning to find another pack for a while, but this is the first chance we've had. If we split up to find the pack, can you find us later?" asked Kiba.
Sirius put something around Kiba's neck.
"This is an old trick the pure bloods use to keep an eye on their children. It has a spell that will let us find you later and let us apparate to wherever you are. If things get really bad, have the pack put their hands or paw on a piece and say 'den'. It will become a portkey that will take you straight back to Remus' cottage."
Kiba accepted the necklace, which was doublelooped around his neck. More than long enough for the pack to put a paw or hand on it.
Kiba and the others took off, with Harry following them. So far he had managed the transformation, but he was still a puppy for some reason. He was barely able to keep up with the pack because of his short legs.
She lifted her head up. Someone was calling.
She howled back.
Another howl came, this one closer. It was saying "We are here. We do not wish to fight."
This time she gave a different call.
"I am here. I am alone."
As the last note of her song ended, she saw him. A great white wolf with beautiful golden eyes. Beside him was a tawny wolf with three bangles around his front leg, and a warm brown wolf with a collar. Behind them was a panting wolf cub with gentle green eyes.
"I am Kiba, leader of the Lunar Flower pack. We are merely traveling," he sang.
"I am Tsuki, leader of none. My pack has died because of hunters."
"We have room in our pack, if you wish to join," sang Kiba.
"You smell of humans."
"We have found those who can coexist with us. They gave us a new land to roam and protection. They are pack."
"I have no love of humans," sang Tsuki.
"The one who lives in human dwelling is a cursed wolf. He will not allow hunters near his lands," sang Hige.
Tsuki's interest perked up at that. She had nothing against Cursed wolves, only humans and hunters.
"What of the pup?"
"He is one who will be pack," replied Kiba. Meaning he was part of the pack, but not part of it. In this case Kiba was referring to the fact that Harry had yet to master his transformation between wolf and human.
Tsuki seemed to think on this. On one paw, she could stay alone and try to find another pack that would take her in. Unpleasant and hunters already wanted her dead because she had killed the last one. On the other, she would have to deal with magical humans and a curse wolf. Her paws were tied.
She was not a wolf who enjoyed loneliness. She wanted to be part of a pack again, one piece of a greater whole.
"Let me join you."
Whoo! That was a pain to get out. Now, I do have a reason for making Sirius the Alpha and not James.
Most of the reason why I have Sirius as the 'lead' wolf is because of his animal form. I find it hard to believe Moony would accept James as the lead considering his animal was something wolves would take down in packs to eat, and Peter would be considered a snack at best.
As for Harry being a wolf, well, I had planned that from the beginning.
Now, as for pack pairings, there are currently two so far, with a third one in the works for later once Harry returns from the ambush in the graveyard.
The pairings are: Blue and Hige, Tsuki and Tsume. If any of you have suggestions for Toboe, I would be glad to hear it! (I already have plans for Kiba...there was a reason why they couldn't find Chesa.)
