SURPRISE! HAHA! You all thought that was the end of the story. Well, it sorta was, but that's a different discussion. Until more comes about on that, I bring you MEISA'S SHINDEN. This was totally unplanned, but as I was writing the epilogue and listening to my playlist, the song "Confident" by Demi Lovato came on, and all I could think about was that's who I wanted Meisa to be, and it sorta spiraled from there. Suddenly, I had a whole plot for Meisa's backstory, and I thought it would be a nice little snippet for everyone out there who's still reading. It also keeps with Kishimoto's theme as well; all the Shinden's came out after Naruto was finished, and mostly took place before Boruto begins. Meisa's story will focus on her own self-discovery, starting when she is 13 up until the time she is 15/16. We tried to put a lot of themes and different spins on certain ideas; aka, this story will be more cannon than usual. Bear with me, I think it will be an entertaining story that you guys will love. It will be broken up into 2 to 3 parts (leaning towards 3 right now, but it's all up in the air).
So, without further ado,
-trumpets sound, beat drops-
Part One
"I can feel the flames on my skin
Crimson red paint on my lips
If a man talks shit, then I owe him nothing
I don't regret it one bit, 'cause he had it coming
They say I did something bad
Then why's it feel so good?
They say I did something bad
But why's it feel so good?
Most fun I ever had
And I'd do it over and over and over again if I could
It just felt so good, good"
-I Did Something Bad, Taylor Swift
Wild, uncontrolled, crazy.
Would she always feel this way?
The rush of adrenaline that surged forward as her crimson snared trap wrapped around her enemy. They were always thugs given that all the villages had an alliance with each other after the war. Always causing mischief and pain; pain they didn't care to understand. Mercenaries trying to vie for contracts, lands, supplies. Trying to instigate petty squabbles to garner more bloodshed and coin.
They wanted war, they wanted to shed blood, they wanted to suffer.
'Then they will.' She thought drily as she crushed her fist.
"Sacuna Blood art: Cat O' Nine Tails"
Her victim screamed as red wires cut him into pieces, lacerating his flesh and rending his body in pieces causing immense pain, but an immediate death. Blood surged forward, misting the air in a deluge of gore, and dousing the young woman. She released a pensive sigh, feeling release wash over her like a fresh shower. It was a macabre scene; the warm body in a pile of meaty bits, the trap releasing, liquefying from the solid form to its original viscous state, and the kunoichi, dressed in his blood.
She heard a deep sigh from her sensei, "Dammit, Meisa," he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "You didn't have to be so bloody about it. What a drag."
Her stormy blue-green eyes glanced back at him. "The twins aren't any better, Shikamaru-sensei."
The dark-haired Nara had to agree. The twins, Maikeru and Arrekasu Otsutsuki, weren't much better. They had the nasty habit of using a combination of three changes in nature, resulting in a Typhoon release. The duo would become a whirling storm of twin dragons which caused massive destruction and rending sinew from bone, leaving much of the same bloody mess as their teammate.
Silently, two figures appeared seemingly out of thin air. To the left of Meisa stood Maikeru Otsutsuki. His dark grey hair was spiked ferociously, spilling onto his forehead and into part of his eyes, but only parting to give way to his two protruding horns that rested at his hairline. His blazing scarlet eyes peering through the hair and contrasting his pale skin and dark hair. A red triangular strip marked his left cheek, declaring his Inuzuka heritage. He wore a white, black trimmed, high collared kimono that ended just below his knees with black shinobi pants underneath. His right arm was completely covered by the sleeve going passed his extent of his hand, opening only slightly at his shoulder, while the other was exposed at the shoulder. The kimono sleeve were torn along the arm from the slicing force of the wind.
In contrast, Arrekasu Otsutsuki stood to the right. His silver-white hair stood out against the group of dark-haired shinobi. His hairline came to a deep peak on his forehead which also sported two horns. On either side of the horns came a long piece of white hair stopping just after his cheek. The rest of it was tied off into a ponytail with a white bandage, falling at his mid-back. His eyes were pupil-less and opaque, blood vessels popping around them. His right cheek bore the Inuzuka birthmark. Opposing his light appearance was a black, white trimmed kimono that was an inverted version of his brother's and black shinobi pants. His left arm was covered with the kimono sleeve while his dominant arm was exposed. The bottom of his pants and his sleeve were completely shredded from the attack.
Shikamaru finally settled on the young woman in front of him. Her hair was the purest black, settling down her back smoothly and framing her face in long layers like her mother's. Her cheekbones and jaw were sharper than a typical female's, but they fit her face well with her narrow eyes that always held a stormy expression. Her skin tone was darker than the twins', but still fair. Her skin that was also dripping with blood. It affected her kimono more so. For some reason beyond her sensei's brilliant mind's comprehension, the kunoichi loved wearing white haoris. White, long kimono sleeved haori coats that were trimmed with red thread and bore the Uchiha crest on her back. She wore it loosely tied with a red sash at her hip that showed her mother's clan symbol. Underneath, she wore a tight fitted, short sleeved black ninja shirt and matching compression shorts. All of which was soaked in blood.
A long sigh escaped from their sensei's lips as he reached for his box of cigarettes. "You all ruined your clothing…. -again…" He sighed once more, this time with smoke. "How troublesome. I swear, who did I piss of to deserve you three? Honestly, this is just unfair."
The twins took their place standing behind Meisa with impish grins.
"You know sensei," teased Maikeru, "if you hated us that badly, then why did you pass us?"
Arrekasu nodded and laughed, "My brother has a point. You knew that we were a no holds barred team. You pit us against the legendary Ino-Shika-Cho trio as our entrance training."
Shikamaru sighed, peeved at how well his students could poke holes in his decisions. Taking another drag of his cigarette, "Ya know, you three held back in those tests, and I believe that our lovely little Uchiha has a pennant for her uncle's violent tendencies."
Meisa threw her hands in the air, "The mission was to neutralize the targets by whatever means necessary. I did, by means well within those boundaries, and just think, the leader won't be coming back to harass these trails again."
"There are better ways of handling your opponents. There may come a time when reducing them to a bloody smear isn't going to be a viable option," Shikamaru pointedly blew his smoke over the three of them. An action that was common place, to show his irritation. "You all have your own jutsu and methodology, but you need to worry about-"
"I know," snapped Meisa, "The legacy and the Will of Fire that has been given us. We are all aware that we live under the shadows of our clans and our actions shape them."
"But," added Arrekasu, "We are tired of people, no, villains trying to destroy the peace that our parents earned. You fought in the war. You know-"
"Enough! You three are handful in the best of times, but don't drag the sacrifices of those who died into your vendetta game."
The trio stood silently, all three of them shocked by the outburst. Shikamaru glancing over them, shaking his head. "Now don't get so sullen. Seriously Maikeru, no tears." Shikamaru groaned massaging the bridge of his nose. "This is not how this was supposed to go.
Meisa blew out an angry puff of hair. "If you're just going to belittle us, can we go then? This blood is getting sticky."
Per usual, her sensei was right. Her mother absolutely threw a fit over the red staining. Nevermind the fact Shikamaru assigned them to go fill all the deer feeders in the Nara forest later.
"Meisa, what have we talked about?" Her mother asked exacerbated. "You can't cause such a bloody mess. The more you give-"
"The darker I become. I get it, mom, and I can handle it."
"Then why is it getting worse? Before you were so timid with it, trying to learn how to use it without killing people. Now, you're going right in and eliminating them."
"That's what my missions require!" Meisa exclaimed.
"Not always! You are still Genin! The Hokage isn't sending you on S-rank assassination mission!" Sintary argued back.
"'Whatever means necessary'" Meisa echoed what she told her sensei. "That's what our mission said. The twins-"
"Don't even go there." Her mother stopped her, shaking her head. "You are one whole year older than them. They are following your lead. If you start killing people right away, they are going to follow you."
"No," the younger girl interrupted her. "Mom, the twins have their own destructive tendencies. Do not blame me for the blood they shed. They destroyed the arena in the Chuunin Exams."
She had a point. The dynamic duo demolished the Forest of Death via monsoons and wind storms. It caused their sensei, who became the Chief Strategist, along with her father, an advisor to the Hokage, to put their genius minds together to formulate new tests for the exams. Needless to say, the team failed that exam for their 'lack of control.'
"And that was why you failed, and why you need practice to when you're on missions. You cannot retake the Chuunin exams until Shikamaru feels you and the twins have improved in that area."
Meisa sighed disgruntledly. "I know, mom."
"Then why do you continuously push the envelope? Why can't you first attempt at subduing and then kill if your enemy refuses to go down?" Her mother continued. "You have no self control over this!"
"I have self control!" The young girl screamed back. "Those people opposed the very life you and dad almost died for! They want to cause pain without any regards for the effects on other people! They just want to kill others anyway, so why shouldn't I put those bastards to sleep myself!? Why should they be subdued and sentenced when it risks them escaping?"
"Meisa, there are times when you or the village need information."
"Then, they'll send Kazuki or a Yamanaka since they're the one supposed to obtain intel. Isn't that why you allowed him to leave? To gain intelligence?" The young girl argued.
Her mother sighed, her head tipping back slightly and rubbing her eyes with her finger tips. It was a sign she was exacerbated, one Meisa was very accustomed to. "Kazuki left because he felt his mind was not at the level an ANBU's should be even though he was promoted with exceptional scores. It was at the same time the Hokage received a message from Uncle Ko requesting backup regarding some information about the Otsutsuki. The only one who can reach Kokuro is Uncle Sasuke. Since Uncle Sasuke had been Kazuki's sensei throughout his Genin and Chuunin years, he felt it would be beneficial for his pupil to come with to expand his self-discovery and knowledge. Your father and I could see your brother was distraught here. There was nowhere for him to for his enlightenment, and he was trapped. We didn't want to see him struggle anymore. So, with our consent, the Hokage assigned Uncle Sasuke and Kazuki the S-rank mission to assist Uncle Ko."
"Well, why can't I join them?" Meisa asked, abruptly.
"You're still too young," Sintary started to say.
"Their mission might be over by the time you claim I'm old enough!" The young girl protested. "I'm a Genin now, a shinobi. You can't say it's too dangerous now because any day I go into the field yields that aspect. You claim brother felt trapped, well, I feel trapped too! I have they violent tendencies that I can't control, and it scares me, mom! You think I really want to kill these people? I don't even think about it. All I feel is this rage, and-and this rush that clouds my head. They're trying to ruin everything you and dad and everyone else worked so hard for! People died for this peace, people you all knew. And then these bandits march right in and want to inflict pain and cause war just for the hell of it! It's not right, and they don't deserve to live at that point! And that's all I think about when I capture them, and the only time I come out of that cloud is when they're already dead. I don't know how to stop that rush, how to control it, and I can't learn it here because you don't use your Kekkei Genkai like I do. You don't feel it, and you don't understand what is going on, and there's no one in the five villages that experience what I feel either. So, instead you try to tell me all this b.s. about learning control for the importance of missions because you can't tell me exactly how to take the reigns myself. If I can't find control here, I should be allowed to find someone out there that can help. Mom," Meisa pleaded at this point, "I wouldn't be alone. I'd be with family. You know all of them would protect me from any harm, and I can handle myself."
She could see her mother sigh, the resolve faltering in her. "I can't promise anything, Meisa. I don't even know where Uncle Ko has them currently."
"Can't you call him?" The young girl asked since new technology had been flooding their civilization due to the inter-dimensional interactions.
"On that device? I don't believe Uncle Ko carries one, and I know Uncle Sasuke and Kazuki do not." Sintary said. Meisa sighed frustratedly at that. "Meisa, I still have to talk to your father and the Hokage about this. Even if Uncle Ko walked through that door now, doesn't mean you'd have permission to go."
Another annoyed flow of air escaped through the young girl's nose. "Now, go clean up. You have to attend to the deer in the Nara Forest."
Meisa headed up the stairs silently, not willing to say another word to her mother. Once in her bathroom, her blood-soaked kimono was peeled off and placed in the trash can off to the side. Her undergarments followed suit given nothing could remove the red liquid from them. Steam rose from the shower as she entered. The water boiled against her skin, but the kunoichi could barely feel it. Instead, she focused on the blood and the water mixing together down her body and into the drain.
Blood was beautiful, she decided, even more so than water.
Meisa remembered the first time she had manipulated the red substance. She was six at the time, just freshly enrolled in the Academy. Her father and brother were sparing against each other while her and her mother were sitting on the sidelines, watching. It was towards the end of their fight when her father threw a kunai at Kazuki's leg, only scratching it, but her father ended the match saying Kazuki was "critically wounded" and would have had to abort anyway. Her mother had gotten up to heal his wound, and Meisa had rapidly gone to her brother's side. She sat on the ground next to him, tilting her head as she became fixated on the blood dribbling steadily down her brother's leg. Her little attention span still on the wound as she stared long and hard at it. Shortly, the blood stopped flowing, but when her mother called to her and her concentration was broken, it began again. Oxygen began to flow through the young girl's lungs again, as she had forgotten to breathe, and her head felt woozy afterwards.
It was then on, her parents tried to shield her from any blood. At first, she thought it was because they thought she was afraid of it, but as Meisa progressed in the Academy, she determined it was because she liked seeing blood.
Her academy sensei tested her chakra nature like all the others, and the water release became her predominate focus. She was reintroduced to her Uncle Kisame when she was eight, not only as a family friend, but as her sensei for water release while she wasn't in the Academy.
A smile crossed over Meisa's lips as she remembered her first thought on her blue uncle: he was a beast.
He had shown no mercy to the little girl, even going as far as to use his sword, Samehada, against her. The cuts along her shoulder had stung, anger and adrenaline flooded her system as her flight or fight response kicked in. She remembered him staring at her cockily, his sword resting over his shoulder, exposed with her blood.
He had expected her to give up, to cry, to beg for mercy.
She did none of the above.
Meisa acted unconsciously; stopping the bleeding in her arm, and then wrapping her uncle in a blood snare using the residue on his sword as her source. Her uncle was a strong shinobi, and she clearly recalled the strain she felt trying to complete the jutsu and immobilize him. Her body screamed at her to stop, but it only fueled her resolve even more. She had this burning desire to spill his blood because he had the audacity to spill hers. Those thoughts cascaded into reality as some of the blood wires cut into his skin.
Everything after that was a bit of a blur. She remember her father stepping between them, releasing her control and returning her back to a conscious state. She recalled the unreadable look in her father's dark eyes, and the fear in her mother's when she joined his side. Meisa had collapsed to her knees, now feeling fear instead of anger. What had happened? Why did she do? Why was Uncle Kisame bleeding? She was petrified and felt so helpless in that moment. Her breath came quickly to her as her hands crept up and gripped under her hair.
'What is wrong with me?' She had wondered.
Suddenly, her parents were by her side, a hand on each shoulder. She heard her father's calm voice, telling her to breath and relax. She had leaned into him, sobbing. The sound of his heartbeat slowly subdued her frantic state. It was then her mother explained her Kekkei Genkai, a blood release.
That night, Meisa had stood in the shower just like she was now, watching the blood mix with the water. It was when she decided she wouldn't fear this technique like her mother. That she would master it and control it, rather than it control her.
Archives were moved from the Sand Village to the Leaf for her to study from. She practiced as much as she could, but she often required a partner. Her mother would often spare with her. While her mother's knowledge was appreciated, they very quickly reached a point where she could no longer provide Meisa with anymore. The young girl often joined her brother and whatever teammates he had at the time in sparring, choosing to experiment with her Kekkei Genkai. She went with her gut feelings, going with whatever, but this technique led to blackouts where Meisa couldn't remember attacking her opponent or whether they were foe or friend. She simply acted, and often times her brother had a hard time pulling her from these experiences. Meisa couldn't think, couldn't feel, had no sense of time, no sense of danger, she was absolutely blank during these moments. Kazuki worked with her after these sessions, trying to stop these blackouts by walking through what had happened. They would even take it slow. He wouldn't attack her, but merely draw blood for her to use. In the slower moments, she had control; she thought harder on her actions, trying to solidify a routine. In battle, however, it proved to be useless.
None of this deterred Meisa, though.
Even though, years later, she had yet to gain total control over this Kekkei Genkai, she continued to try. She remained disciplined and confident. In truth, it didn't necessarily disappoint her when her missions went like the current one had; where she killed her target. She had validated each of her kills and shrugged it off, saying she would try again next time. What she was getting tired of, though, was everyone telling her she needed to gain control; insinuating she wasn't trying her hardest. Now that, pissed her off, leading up to her own boiling point.
She needed to find release, a sense of self peace, her own thing.
And she couldn't do it here.
Meisa ran her hands through her hair, thoroughly rinsing it before pulling back her own hand. It was now free of blood as was most her body. But she'd never truly be free of it.
No.
This kunoichi's hands were permanently stained red. No amount of soap, vinegar, or bleach will ever rid her of the truth.
Her hand gripped into a fist as she pushed all those thoughts aside. She needed to get to the Nara forest before she got into more trouble…
When she arrived, she was met with the sound of mischievous giggling. She knew the twins were there, and that neither father had been present when they had to go home to change. They had yet to reprimanded like she had.
Mizuki ran a hand through her drying black locks and looked around for their sensei. He did have to allow them inside, after all. She grew antsy, like something was crawling beneath her skin. For some reason or another, she wanted to be in that forest; she felt the need like she needed air to stay alive.
Shikamaru didn't delay them much longer. His speech was blurred in her mind as she grabbed her bag and headed in, dazedly, after the twins. The two skipped holding hands while the other carried each of their bags.
Meisa headed towards the western part of the forest, where the deer were least likely to be at that time of day. Her feet moved of their own accord until she got to her first feeder. Her mind was numbed despite all that she could reflect upon. She dumped some corn into the wooden feeder and moved on.
One of her paths was odd. The young kunoichi was taken further back, deeper than usual. She was definitely off the path she was allowed, but again, her feet kept moving and her worries muted. Her hazel blue-green eyes landed on something glinting on the ground beneath the bushes. She gently reached down and grabbed hold of it, pulling back a pendant.
"What is this supposed to be? An upside down triangle?" Meisa frowned, confused but intrigued. As she stood, she felt a presence surround her. Her skin prickled with anticipation. "Who's there? Shika-sensei, you're not spying on me are you?" She called out, looking for him or the deer. She found neither.
Meisa turned back to the necklace and thought about tossing it back, but deep down, she felt she should keep it. It likely wasn't of any value to the Nara; she had never seen anyone wear such a thing. She slipped it into a pocket of her kimono and continued towards the next feeder.
'Hey!'
Meisa's eyes narrowed as she wiped around. "Who's there?!" She growled. The wind merely blew around her in response.
'Not out there, you fucking moron.' The voice continued. 'Down here!'
The young girl gaped as she stared at the ground, her fist gripping together. "You're calling me a moron? Who's the one in the dirt!?" She shouted at him. "How the hell are you talking to me!?"
'Lord Jashin connected us. You are the one he chose to free me.'
"Who the hell is Jashin?"
"Meisa!" Shikamaru's voice rang out.
Her light eyes went over to the tree her sensei stood in. "Shikamaru-sensei, is something wrong?"
Dark eyes looked her over silently, trying to decipher the situation. "You're in a restricted area." He started.
Meisa slowly looked around, as if she was seeing the area for the first time. "I'm sorry, sensei. I guess I got so wrapped up in my thoughts, I didn't realize where I was going."
Those dark eyes gazed back at her before he jumped down, accepting her answer. "Come on,"
Meeting the older man, she walked besides him. "Sensei?" Meisa started, getting a hum in response, "Why is this area restricted?"
Silence again.
The young girl glanced over at the man next to her. She was met with an expression she had never really seen on her sensei. His eyes were soft with sadness and remorse. His lips were turned downward, but only fractionally. In his pocket, she knew he was clutching that cigarette lighter he always carried with him.
"There is a dark force that needs to be monitored at all times. Only the Nara shinobi have a vast forest with a connection to the deer that live here. It's how we keep it maintained and out of the wrong hands." Shikamaru answered very solemnly.
Meisa frowned at that. She could tell her sensei wasn't explaining the whole truth to her. It was something more personal than that, but she also knew her boundaries; for the most part.
Once they were back on their path, Meisa looked up at her sensei. "You don't have to stay with me. I'll be more careful about staying on the path."
"You can head out Meisa; the twins already finished the rest." Shikamaru told her quietly.
Blue-green eyes blinked, a bit surprised. "They did? I thought they would have taken longer…"
The young girl left feeling unsatisfied and troubled - which usually she came out with those issues resolved. An invisible source pressed down on her shoulders and adding pressure to her head. Whispers itched at her ear, but when she looked around, she couldn't find the source. Muscle clenched and recoiled as she tried to release some tension as she walked. Her pace picked up, straining her legs because she would break out into a run across the village. She barely glanced at her path or who was in it. For the most part, people cleared the way for her, or quickly jumped out of it. No one wanted to get in the distraught teenage girl's way.
She couldn't go home like this. Her mother would get worried, and then her chance at freedom would flutter out the window. The Nara forest didn't calm her down; she needed another place to breathe.
Taking off her flat shoes, Meisa raced through the forest. She loved the feeling of the earth beneath her feet, and she certainly didn't mind the prick on the debris against her feet. Dirt gave way to coarser sand as Meisa quickly came upon the shoreline of the family lake. A breeze welcomed her, breathing new life as she suddenly felt at peace. Her pace only slowed once she could bury her feet in the wet grain and feel the waves lap at her feet.
A couple of deep breathing exercises and a few happy thoughts later, the young girl felt like she could fly once more. Meisa rested on the dock, crossing her legs and faced outward to the welcoming water. She inhaled the clean air and closed her eyes. She folded her hands to mediate; fingers extended except her index fingers were folded lightly by her thumb. It was similar to the water release, and with that being her "natural" element, it of course brought her much peace with her chakra.
The young girl was only in the eye of her inner storm though. Turmoil soon overwhelmed her again. The whispering overcame the sound of the water. The repetition of "Jashin" pulsated with the throb of her head. Meisa leaned forward, resting her head against the cool wood.
"Kami, make it stop," she begged closing her eyes.
A small noise followed after her plea. Something rolled out of her pocket and came to a stop close nearby her face. It rolled onto its flat side like a coin, recoiling with the wood a bit before going still.
The whole ordeal annoyed the already aggravated kunoichi, but when enthralled her more was what the object was:
The upside down triangle pendant she got from the Nara forest.
Meisa's eyes bled red as anger overwhelmed her. All this started with that stupid pendant. Everything was fine before she picked it up. Deciding once and for all she needed to get rid of it, long fingers gripped the silver circle as she stood.
The whispering grew louder as the pain intensified in her head, down to her neck and shoulders. Her hand shook from so much negativity coursing through her. This wasn't who she was. She had her issues, but she wasn't an angry person who had rage filling her to the brim. This pendant caused that in her; it was evil, and she wanted no part of it.
Thursting the thing across the lake with all her anger, Meisa screamed at it. That didn't satisfy her enough though. Quickly, her hands flew with speed and skill all Uchiha were graced with. Flames ripped from her mouth as she unleashed her heritage at that evil contraption. All her strength focused on melting that thing behind recognition, unbinding it from her completely by destroying it.
Once the fireball resolved, the young girl was left panting, the edges of her mouth signed slightly from the massive overload of fire chakra that she was unaccustomed to. Blue-green eyes glared at the spot the burnt pendant fell into the lake. The whispering had settled and a different type of headache -on most likely chakra induced- took over instead. However, her unease and restlessness returned. She felt like she was missing something; something she needed to complete her again.
Meisa clenched and unclenched her fists as she tried to shake whatever she felt. The pendant was evil, and she was not; therefore, it should not be in her possession. She willed herself to turn away and start walking back.
But two steps later, she turned around and flung herself into the awaiting water.
