Wow...wasn't expecting Lupine Horror to come up with a story idea scarily similar to my opening. Though I will give him props for such an awesome idea! I totally recommend Reinforced Magic! Look it up if you haven't read it yet!
Lina bet all of their lives on the Giga Slave. It was all or nothing to defeat Hellmaster Phibrizzo. Right as she was about to go to the next verse, Phibrizzo struck her with a spell, causing it to go out of control. Suddenly she was overtaken by this beautiful golden light.
After that she blacked out.
"My precious baby girl! My little Serena!" said a woman's voice. It sounded so familiar to her.
"Our beautiful baby Serenity..." said a man's voice.
"She's adorable Prongs!"
"Run Lily! Take Rena and run!"
"James!"
"Avada...!"
There was a flash of green light and she saw the woman with familiar red hair collapse. A shield of gold appeared before her before the same green light hit her.
The infant's eyes became ruby red and the black hair became like flames. The golden shield covered the infant child and teleported her far from the house which was now falling apart. The child vanished right before a piece of ceiling nearly crushed the crib.
The infant landed in a yard where a young toddler was playing. The mother picked up the infant and took her inside the house...
Lina barely recognized Gourry in that dimensional void. He had jumped in to it to rescue her from the golden light of chaos.
She heard a voice. One that was both familiar and not at the same time.
'Well Lina Inverse, I have an offer for you. Would you like to become my Knight on the material plane, or would you like to return to being a normal sorceress?'
'Who...who are you?'
'I am darker than darkest pitch, deeper that the deepest night. I am the one who shines gold upon a sea of darkness...'
'The Lord of Nightmares!' said Lina in her mind.
'Indeed. You and your companion have impressed me, Lina Inverse. I am offering you the rare chance to become my Knight, my avatar in the mortal realms to act as my will.'
'What do I get out of this?'
'The chance of the Giga Slave going out of control drops if you are my knight, and the Ragna Blade will be easier to cast. Plus you get to annoy Xellos.'
'Deal. I will be your knight,' said Lina.
She could feel the power coming to her as she and Gourry were brought back to the material world.
As Lina had her freak out on Gourry, hiding her relief that he did care about her, she felt something else take place.
"EH? You want to make a trip to find your parents?" said Amelia.
"My mom and dad tend to travel a lot. And my sister works as a waitress between cases. I have something I need to ask my parents about," said Lina.
"Really? What do you plan to ask Ms. Lina?" asked Amelia.
"While I was in that golden light, I had this weird vision that I need to ask them about. Plus I kinda forgot to send them any letters while on the road like I promised..."
"Ms. Lina that's awful! How could you forget to send them any letters?!" said Amelia.
"Because I rarely have any idea where they are," said Lina.
"Well, that could be a major problem," admitted Amelia.
The post needed an address to deliver after all.
"Plus Luna would have the same trouble getting a hold of them," said Lina.
"Who's Luna?"
"My older sister. Let's just say that while we get along, I try to avoid her if at all possible," said Lina with a shiver.
"So what do you want to ask your parents Lina?" asked Gourry.
"The vision I had while in that golden light was that of an infant being teleported between worlds. I have to know who that child was," said Lina.
"Lina dear!"
"Hi mom!" said Lina. It had been two months, but they had finally located her parents.
This was mostly because Lina had sucked up her fear in concern to her sister and asked for help.
"So what do you want Lina? You wouldn't have asked Luna for help finding us if it wasn't important," asked her father.
"I had a vision after a fight with a monster. It was about a baby being teleported across worlds..."
"You're the infant," said her mother flatly.
"Mom?"
"When you were almost two, you appeared in our front yard where Luna was playing. We could sense the transportation magic on you from the house. Since there weren't any reports of missing children, and it was doubtful an infant could teleport that far on their own, we assumed it was fate. So we took you in and named you Lina."
"I'm...not your daughter?"
"You're our daughter in every way that matters Lina. Never forget that."
"So where to now Lina?" asked Gourry.
"I have no idea," said Lina.
"Hey...is that an owl?" said Gourry.
"HUH? Why would an owl be awake at this time of day?" said Lina.
"Then what do you call that?" asked Gourry, pointing.
"What in the... What's an owl doing awake at noon? They're supposed to be nocturnal!" said Lina.
"I think it's carrying a letter," said Gourry.
"I think you're right," said Lina.
The owl nearly collapsed in Lina's arms, and the envelope it was carrying was very frayed at the edges.
"Who the heck is Serenity Potter?" said Lina. For as long as she had known, she was Lina Inverse, sorceress extraordinaire and known bandit killer.
About the only reason she recognized the name was because of that weird vision she had.
She was about to leave the owl there when Xellos appeared.
"You know Ms. Lina, this is supposed to be a test."
"A test?" said Lina.
"In order to fully become a Knight, you must first pass a test of sorts. That letter is the key to your past...and your future Ms. Lina," said Xellos.
"Let me guess. In order to pass this test I have to settle my past, is that it?"
"Pretty much."
"Any limits on who I can take?"
"Only those who are your regular traveling companions."
"Which means Zel and Amelia."
"Exactly!" said Xellos.
"Well, at least I won't bored!" said Lina.
Xellos wondered what the Lord of Nightmares had planned for Ms. Lina. Whatever it was, it would prove to be interesting.
"Ms. Lina what did you need us here for?" asked Amelia.
"Simple. There is a certain Dark Lord that has devised a test for me, and the easiest way out of it is to go along," said Lina.
"Which Dark Lord?" asked Zelgadis.
Lina had tracked him down and literally dragged him back to the cafe where Amelia and Gourry were waiting. Only an idiot tried to fight back against Lina in that mood.
"No clue, and Xellos just keeps saying that it's a secret," said Lina easily.
Which was true. If asked by anyone Xellos would just say that it was a secret. Gourry didn't care and Lina had an idea of what was going on anyway.
"Where are we going anyway?" asked Zelgadis. The sooner this was over with, the faster Lina would leave him alone.
"No idea," said Lina a little too cheerfully for his taste.
"WHAT?! You dragged me off and you have no idea where we're heading?!" said Zelgadis angrily.
"I have no idea because I was too little to remember it. If you want info, ask Xellos," said Lina flippantly.
"Ms. Lina is correct. Where we are heading is an entirely different world. A realm where Monsters and Gods have been banished from. This world was formed from the excess energy of the banishing. That is why there is so much magic in this realm. However, the world Lina is going to has limited magic. Some users barely get any while others receive a great deal," said Xellos.
"What? An entirely different world?" said Amelia.
"Indeed. Ms. Lina is not of this world. She is from this other world. Because of a certain incident when she was still an infant, she was sent here to live...at least, that's the best theory among certain Monsters," said Xellos.
"MS. LINA ISN'T FROM OUR WORLD?!" shrieked Amelia.
"Perhaps I've said too much," said Xellos.
"We might as well get this out of the way. To be blunt, while I was in the golden light, I saw a vision of an infant carried away by magic and left with a couple and their toddler. From what my parents told me, I was that child."
"And how did you end up here? What about your birth parents?" asked Zelgadis.
"There was some mage in that other world who attacked my birth parents. The only reason I escaped was because of the shield that teleported me here," said Lina.
"So why did you drag us here?" asked Zelgadis.
"And listen to you whine when you realized I went to another world where you might be able to find a spell to turn you back to normal?" said Lina.
Zelgadis blinked...before he realized her point. Had he been left behind on this he would have complained a great deal...possibly enough for Lina to blast him to shut him up.
"And Amelia?" asked the chimera.
"She'd complain about Justice or something and just be generally annoying if I hadn't brought her too," shrugged Lina.
"She has a point you know," said Gourry.
"So when do we go?" asked Zelgadis.
"After Amelia says goodbye to her dad and I hit Xellos with a fireball," said Lina.
"Eh? Ms. Lina...?"
"FIREBALL!"
Xellos landed on the floor looking a little singed.
"I've been meaning to cast that since Xellos kept hinting at something about the other world that I didn't know. You really got on my nerves doing that," said Lina smugly.
Zelgadis snickered evilly at what happened to Xellos.
Lina was packed and ready to go. She had enough gold to survive a few days, and Gourry was carrying some of the bags. (Zelgadis had the rest, to his annoyance). Since Amelia's status as Princess wouldn't matter as much in this world, she had almost left her royal crest at home. She brought it anyway just so she wouldn't feel like she was forgetting something.
Xellos started to draw on the ground to make sure they all made it. All these months traveling with them had been the most entertaining he'd ever had. Losing even one would be annoying.
"So how bad is the traffic?" joked Lina.
"Well considering we're jumping worlds there is to be some traffic. After all, Monsters are the only ones who bother jumping these days."
"Monsters can go between worlds?!" said Zelgadis.
"Just because we were banished from the other world doesn't mean there is a barrier keeping us from going there for short periods."
Sometimes Xellos went there for a snack. The taste of negative emotions was much higher in England for some reason. Finally he finished the circle. He stepped inside and cast the spell.
"Dimensia Traves!" said Xellos.
A bright bubble appeared around them and they vanished from the clearing they had been in. The circle was erased as soon as the bubble came up.
"UGH! What is this smell?!" said Lina. It smelled worse than any campfire smoke!
"That would be smog. Since magic isn't as common here as it is back in our world, technology is how people have progressed. Unfortunately this means they've also wrecked the environment to the point that you have to deal with health hazards because of certain by products. In this instance it would be best to blame the cars and certain trains," said Xellos.
"Ick... Alright bubble charms for each of us," said Lina in disgust.
Using a minor variant of the Ray Wing was a pain, but considering it was either that or continue breathing the fouled air, Lina put up with it. The best part was that it was invisible unless you were underwater.
"So where to first Xellos?"
"The bank. And before you try to rob them blind, I should warn you it's a natural labyrinth and not even the goblins have a map. They just use magic tied to the vaults to drive the carts," said Xellos.
"Damn. I hate labyrinths not made with a plan in mind..." said Lina.
"Plus if you rob them, then they won't hand over all the gold that your birth parents left you."
"Gold?" said Lina, perking up. Xellos wrote down a figure that the Lord of Nightmares had given him, and once Lina saw that she nearly fainted.
She still started to drool heavily though.
Ragnarok cursed when the alarms went off. Some of them meant that another Monster had showed up to do business. They barely tolerated them because while their loyalty and morals were questionable at best, their gold was still good.
The other one was why he was cussing.
The inheritance alarm, which was tied to a select few of the pure blood children of old lines, was going off like a klaxon in the goblin half of the bank.
And to date, the only one who would set off this alarm in this day and age would be the Potter girl. After her disappearance from the wrecked house they had set the wards to her blood which had been taken from a sample of Lily and James.
Dumbledore had attempted to use a doppelganger to keep his ruse that she was attending Hogwarts, but it failed spectacularly. He had barely managed to keep the press from finding out about it.
Ragnarok cursed as he went into the elevator. For her to show up now at the same time as a Monster. His day was officially shot to hell.
Lina was bored. And when she was bored, bad things happened to others. So far they were waiting for the blood work to come back so she could claim her gold. In the meantime Zelgadis had put on a rather strong glamour charm and gone looking around at the books being sold.
Fortunately Xellos had given them all a translation charm so they could understand everyone else.
