Howdy folks, here with both the answers for the Q and A and also a small epilogue where nothing suspicious or worrying with implications to season three happens :D
Anyways, questions time!
Shuriken asked, "What inspired this story" - To be honest, my only inspiration was deciding that I wanted to make some for Digimon. People contribute to the communities of their favorite things in different ways. Some people make fanart, or remixes of popular songs, or hell even entire fangames. But I can't do those things, so here I am writing an incredibly indulgent and wild adventure purely for the sake of enjoyment. So long as I know even a single person has enjoyed the content I'm putting out their for this community, I'm happy :)
Shuriken also asked, "Why Choose these particular digimon and their evolution lines?" - This ones a little harder to give in short form answer, each character got their evolutions for different reason. The partner digimon themselves were chosen purely based on personal bias lol Like Kotemon who has been a favorite of mine since Digimon World 3. In the lead up to actual posting this story, a lot digimon changed, I think the only one I was dead set on was Kotemon, and I think Tsukaimon. But much like in the first season of Adventure, the evolutions were mainly chosen to represent growth (Of both human and digimon) and that particular digimons role in the party. For Kotemon, his evolutions have always been showcasing his improvement as a swordsmen, slowly climbing up the ranks into proper Knighthood. Shamanmon started off as kind of a dorky, dumb beast evolution with Apemon, but has been growing into this refined and skilled martial arts master. Kokuwamon started with an evolution that mimicked his partner, as Digimon that can't function properly on its own with Mekanorimon, I chose Gigadramon for his Ultimate level for 2 reason. 1 being that Gigadramon doesn't get enough love, and 2 being that I noticed in Mekanorimon's design that he has some kind of organic body inside the metal suit that you can see around his exposed eye. So the idea of him exploding out his metal confinement seemed like fun to me :D. As for Tsukaimon, well all of her evolutions were entirely character relevant lol each one showing a phase of her growth. From "Uncontrollable monster" to "What Mephistomon wanted" to "Loving myself". Boy that answer was kind of a tangent, hope you can make some sense of that because it definitely got away from me there XD
Shuriken also asked, "Are there any references/easter eggs in this story?" - In chapter 1 I mentioned that Thomas is wearing a shirt with "A well known Kaiju" on it, this was supposed to be Godzilla because I am also a huge Godzilla fan. You already noticed, but yes the "Cyber Space Global Operations" group (CS:GO) is meant to be a joke reference to the game "Counter Strike Global Offensive". Kai's last name "Sarata" is a mash up of the name "Arata Sanada" from Cyber Sleuth. Cody and his brother Dustin are both, in name, references to the professional wrestlers "Cody Rhodes" and "Dusty Rhodes" though their personalities aren't similar lol
This one is less a reference and more forshadowing, but when Devidramon joins the fight against Dragomon, Madison says "We won't let this be the end of us, This is just the beginning!" - This was forshadowing to her song later in the story, that ends with "This is not the end of me, this is the beginning"
The last one I can for sure remember, is Gokuwmon's first attack against Kinkakumon after he digivolved. This attack sequence was a reference to Dragon Ball, and Goku's "Meteor Combination" attack he uses to finish off Piccolo at the end of their battle. It's on youtube under "Dragon Ball - Goku's Meteor Combination" if you want to compare for youself :D
There are probably more, but those are basically all I can remember atm...
SpaceRyder asked, "Any plans for more chosen to appear?" - Now now, that would be telling :)
SpaceRyder asked, "Will there be any DigimonXhuman pairings?" - I know I joked about it with Kinkakumon falling in love with Cody, but to be honest I'm not sure. I'm not opposed to the idea, but it would need to be story relevant. We came very close to Madison X Tsu before proper logic and reasoning reasserted itself in my brain XD
SpaceRyder asked, "Favorite Digimon and Favorite Season?" - Favorite season is easy, Tamers all the way baby lol As for Favorite digimon that's tough... I love a lot of Digimon. If I had to choose, it'd probably be Machinedramon, I have just always loved everything about him, his design, his lore, all of it. I even run a Machinedramon deck in the current TCG.
SpaceRyder asked, "Any plans for other Fanfictions after Digimon?" - Maybe, I've certainly had ideas floating around I would mind pursuing. Right now the top contenders that may or may not ever happen are Godzilla/Monsterverse, Pokemon, Elder Scrolls, My Hero Academia, Fallout.
And that is everything, thanks for the questions everyone I enjoyed getting this info out there for people to enjoy :D
Now then, about that Epilogue... Consider this the last little inbetween before Season 3, a season that will be broken up into 2 parts and come out... Well, I'm aiming to have it started at the beginning of June, fingers crossed.
. . . Cody and Shamanmon . . .
"Alright, try not be too loud or say anything about what happened in the Digital World." The bleach blond young man whispered as both he and his partner approached the door of their small home. It was in a rather cramped neighborhood, their home vastly overshadowed by a large home just next door. It was late though, and there was nothing on but the street lamps.
The goblin digimon nodded, giving him a thumbs up. "Got it! Don't say anything about almost dying."
Cody was nervous, but knew they couldn't avoid having this conversation. So he did as he usually did, putting one foot in front of the other as he ascended those creaky old wooden steps. Climbing up to the door, lights could still be seen through the curtains despite it being well past midnight. He took a deep breath before raising his hand and racking the door with his knuckles.
A moment later, footsteps could be heard approaching and the porch light kicked on. The door slowly opening, as the groggy form of Cody's grandmother appeared before them. She was short, with bushy gray hair, rubbing her eyes a bit as she tried to clear her vision. "Yes, hello? A little early for the postman isn't it?" Before she got a proper look at him, her eyes widening. "Cody?"
The young punk felt his heart soar as he laid eyes on her, his tough guy façade cracking as he went in for a hug. Embracing her, careful not to squeeze too hard, "Hey Granny, been a little while." His own words a little shaky, holding back his emotions just barely. "It's... It's good to see you again."
She sighed and returned his hug, patting him on the back. "Oh dear, you must have been through a lot while you were gone..." Seeing right through his attempts to remain calm, "But I'm glad you're home." As they broke away from the hug, she turned and started making her way back inside.
Causing Cody to blink, sharing a confused look with Shamanmon, "Uh... Aren't you a little curious about-"
"Whoever your little friend is, I'm sure he's alright." She offered with a smile, "But you look tired, so we can worry about explanations in the morning." Waving for them both to follow her.
Cody feeling relieved to hear that, "Right, thanks... You haven't rented out my room have you?" He joked.
"Bah, of course not." She replied with a dismissive wave. "And your friend can use the guest room, what do you want for breakfast tomorrow?"
Cody struggled to hold back a tear in his eye, "Anything you make will be just perfect."
. . .
Madison and Tsukaimon
. . .
When Madison reached the doors to her apartment, she noted that it was locked. Sighing lightly, she made her way around to the side windows, looking for the one she knew belonged to her brother. "Can you see inside?" She whispered, looking up at Tsu.
"Yeah hang on," She nodded, fluttering up to the glass. "He's sitting at his desk, what should I do?"
"Tap the window to get his attention." She urged.
"Right!" The little purple digimon grinned, turning back to the window and patting her paws against the glass. Watching as Mark turned to look at her, his eyes widening as Tsukaimon waved. "Hiiiii!"
But in response she got an- "AAAAAGH!" As Mark fell back out of his chair.
"Uh oh..." Madison blinked, chuckling lightly as she heard him scrambling inside. Before the window opened, and her brother stuck his head out. "Hey, can you let us in?"
He looked down at her, wiping his eyes trying to make sure he wasn't seeing things. "M-Maddie? It's really you... Yeah hang on!"
Moments later, they were entering into the apartment. Madison and her brother sharing a hug, "Sorry to scare you guys, I know it's been awhile... Is dad at work?"
To which he nodded, "Yeah, left a little while ago actually..." He nodded, taking a seat at the kitchen table. "Madison, what happened?" Looking to Tsu as well, "We saw the fighting on TV, but the broadcasts got all scrambled once that light appeared in the ocean." Looking down worriedly, "We thought you might be dead but... We've been holding onto hope for awhile."
Madison sighed lightly, "Sorry to worry you, we got pulled to the Digital World, er... The world where Digimon come from," She explained, trying to simplify things as best she could. "Had no way to get home or contact you guys for awhile, but we all made it back home safe."
Mark nodded his head, "Well, so long as you're okay..." His eyes drifting to Tsukaimon, "I guess I have you to thank for keeping her safe huh?"
Tsukaimon seeming to shrink a little at the suggestion, knowing the danger her very existence had put Maddie through. "W-Well-"
"We kept each other safe." Madison intervened with a chuckle, "But enough about that, I've been dying to sleep in my own bed... We got stuff for breakfast? I wanna make dad a big meal!"
"Y-Yeah we do," Mark nodded, smiling faintly. Watching her quietly for a moment, just breathing in the fresh air she'd brought with her return. But there was something else, like his little sister had changed... And it had started before she disappeared. "Man... It really blows my mind how much you've grown up recently."
Causing Madison to blink, pausing for a moment as a soft smile rested on her lips. "Yeah well... I've had a lot of help."
. . .
Kai and Kotemon
. . .
The young prodigy and his partner were forced to climb the wall around the traditional home, landing in the yard where no lights remained on. The duo making their way quietly inside, careful not to make any noise as they continued all the way to Kai's room. Though the young man noted a pair of shoes missing at the main hall, it didn't surprise him that Hitomi had already gone home, back to Japan over the last month.
"So we aren't going to wake anyone up?" Kotemon questioned in a whisper, as Kai closed his room door. "I'm sure they want to see you..."
But Kai waved him off, "We can talk in the morning, let them rest..." Sitting on the edge of his bed, looking around at this room that somehow felt alien to him after being away for so long. Despite everything being the way he'd left it, he'd almost gotten used to things on the other side. Still, it was good to be home, where he was safe.
Though, as he rolled over into his bed and stared at the ceiling to rest, he couldn't help but wonder...
"So is that really it? We just... Go back to business as usual?"
"..."
"Is that even possible?"
. . .
Thomas and Kokuwamon
. . .
It was morning by the time Thomas reached his home town, an entire state away from the others by train. Of course he was sure things were going to be loud and probably emotional, so he was happy to have gotten some sleep on the ride here. Now rolling along the sidewalk with Kokuwamon walking beside him, the sun hadn't even made it over the horizon yet so there weren't many out and about in this small neighborhood.
Until he rolled to a stop right out front of his home, eyes landing on the familiar ramp leading to the front door.
"So... We're just gonna walk in?" Kokuwamon questioned.
"Of course," Thomas nodded, starting to move forward. "What else would we do?"
"I'm just nervous," The little metal beetle explained, tapping his metal pincers together. "I mean, what if they don't like me?"
Earning a chuckle from Thomas, "I'm sure they'll think you're great, besides they'll probably be more focused on me coming home than anything else..."
He paused as they reached the top of the ramp, his hand hesitating for a moment before he reached for the doorbell. Giving it a ring, and nervously swallowing. A small part of Thomas still holding his breath, almost unable to believe this was real. That after everything they had gone through, he managed to make it back home safe.
And when the door opened, he was met with the familiar face of his father. A rather portly man with a thick beard, wearing a half closed robe, pajama pants and a white t shirt with a cup of coffee in his hand. "A little early for the paper isn't-" His words hitching as he laid eyes on his son. "T-Thomas?"
The young prodigy was best known for keeping a level head, thinking fast and solving problems. He had already expected this moment to be emotional, he'd thought of every possible question and prepared various answers depending on the tone of the conversation.
But above all else, he was still a kid.
And all that careful planning was blown out the window as he rolled forward, hugging his father. "Dad!" A few tears welling up in his eyes.
The father was still processing, but did as his paternal instincts dictated as he returned the hug. "Thomas... Y-You're here, you're really here... Jenny!" He called out back into the house, "It's Thomas! He's home!"
The sound of feet across the wooden floors thundered towards them, before the form of a thin woman with curly hair and glasses appeared. Blinking as she laid eyes on him, "Thomas!" Joining in on the hug, "We were so worried about you!"
"I-I know," The boy a bit choked up, "I'm sorry, everything happened so fast..." His plans for this conversation in complete disarray, "I-I don't even know where to start..."
"Well," Kokuwamon taking some initiative, raising one claw. "Maybe we start with me?"
Both parents looked at the oversized taser of a digimon, blinking and looking down at their son. Who could only offer a nervous laugh as he wiped his eyes, "Um... Right, yeah... We should take this to the kitchen." Attempting to roll forward, only for his wheel to get caught on part of the welcome mat, "Oh come on... Stupid bargain barrel chair."
"Hang on I've got it!" Kokuwamon happily stepped forward, helping adjust him as well as start wheeling Thomas inside. The boys parents watching in silent disbelief, "So uh... Which way is the kitchen?"
"Right through there," Thomas instructed, letting his partner digimon push him along. His parents slowly following, "Okay so... Uh, well... I didn't really have time to prepare a presentation-"
"How about," His mother finally found her voice, "We start with this uh... Friend? Of yours?"
"Right," Thomas laughed nervously, "Okay so, this is Kokuwamon, he's a Digimon."
"Is he like those horrible monsters on the news?" His father questioned worriedly, "The ones who attacked from the ocean up the coast?"
"Yes and no," Thomas could already hear them jumping to conclusions. He fished out the digivice from his pocket, "About a week before the invasion, I got this strange message, still not entirely sure who it was from." He explained, "But after I got the message, Kokuwamon appeared and my phone turned into... Well, this." He shrugged, "It wasn't just me, there were others who got their own Digimon partners, we all worked together to stop that invasion."
Both his parents looked at one another, before his mother nodded. "I knew I was right, I knew that had to be your voice."
Causing Thomas to blink, "What?"
His father moved over to the kitchen table, flipping open a laptop and quickly opening an internet browser. "They've tried to keep it off the web for awhile, but I think they've given up flagging it." Clicking away at the keyboard, until he turned the screen to Thomas, showing him what appeared to be some kind of file share. The site itself didn't look very official, but it had a play button sitting on a File Icon simply labeled "TheTrueHeroes".
"What is that?" Thomas questioned confused.
"Just listen." His mother urged, placing a hand on his shoulder and nodding to her husband.
"Dragomon is a problem, but that Gateway needs to be closed..." Thomas' eyes widened as he heard his own voice. "Dozens of digimon have already started pouring through, how many more will follow if we don't seal the gate?"
"So I take it you have something in mind?" Cody, no doubt. "And what the hell was that noise?"
"I've got a plan, using the signal our digivices share, the same signal that brought our Digimon here, that's how they created this gateway... That means if we can invert the signal, we can force the gate to close and send all these Digimon back!"
Sam's voice came next, "That was the original plan right? So what's the big deal?"
"Because, I've already spent hours studying this signal!"
"Wait, won't it send our Digimon back too? To the digital world." Madison, ever the one concerned with everyone around her.
"Not just our Digimon... There's a good chance we'll be pulled in too."
"What?! How is that possible?" Kai's bewilderment coming through as clear as day.
"We're bound to our partners now... The same signal that connects us through the Digivice, it's embedded in our bodies as well, its like we've been magnetized, I'm not quite sure how or why but... When we I invert the signal we'll be pulled through as well."
"There's got to be another way!"
"We can't wait any longer! The digimon pouring through have started to spread out, once they start hitting populated areas hundreds will die! We have to do this now! I'm sorry... If there was more time I might be able to figure it out but..."
"Do it. Invert the signal."
"What!?"
"He's right... We can't worry about ourselves when hundreds of lives are at stake."
"You guys understand this could be a one way trip right?"
"We'll find a way back, together."
"Alright, do it... Look at us, out here saving the world..."
The audio play back stopped there, and his father leaned back in his chair. "We saw the monsters fighting on the news broadcasts, trying to stop that... That thing," He shuddered at the memory of Dragomon, "Then this audio leaked, and we thought well... It just had to be you."
His mother nodded, "And then the way they tried to discredit the entire thing," She shook her head, "Trying to deny the presence of any monsters that were fighting for us, it just sounded like a cover up."
Thomas nodded his head, "Yeah..." Grayson at work trying to not cause a panic no doubt. "Yeah that was us," No sense denying it now. "I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to worry anyone I just..." Looking away in shame, "I got so caught up in studying Kokuwamon, and digimon in general... Then when everything happened, I did my best but-"
"Hey," His father placed a hand on his other shoulder, wearing a tired smile. "It's okay, we might still be processing all of this but... We know you did something incredible," He assured, "People are alive today because of what you did, even if it was reckless."
"Thank you... I-" Before he paused to release a relieved sigh. "It's good to be home."
"It's good to have you home," His father chuckled, as both parents hugged their son from either side. "And safe."
"S-So uh..." Kokuwamon nervously tapping his pincers together. "You guys aren't mad? O-Or scared of me?"
All three of them looked at the beetle, Thomas' mother replying. "Honestly I'm... Not sure what to make of you, but if you're Thomas' friend and you kept him safe then you're welcome here."
His father chuckling, "Right, we'll just add another plate at the table for breakfast... Digimon do eat food right?"
"Well, most do," Thomas replied with a shrug, "Kokuwamon kinda just eats electricity."
"So just like you?" His mother teased, "Oh well, we're used to having a high electric bill."
Perhaps not as to plan as he would have preferred, but the tension had been broken and Thomas was finally safe with his family again.
Mission complete, world saved, Digital World liberated from a tyrant, and everyone was well and truly home again.
A fine end to a wild journey, all things considered.
Now came the next great challenge in the young genius' life.
"Oh crap." Thomas realized, as he spotted the nearby calender.
His father blinked, "What is it?"
"Summer break is almost over!"
. . .
Grayson
. . .
While the others enjoyed happy reunions, others were straight to business. The gateway that opened and brought the young heroes back tripped CS:GO's alarms, though upon receiving an interesting direct call from a Miss Angela Ross, along with her companion Hal Roth. Two scientists that had returned to the human world after decades trapped on the other side, all thanks to those damn crazy kids. And now, after a scramble to assemble a private room and get them a ride, the commander in chief of the CS:GO was meeting them face to face.
"Glad you agreed to have this meeting," He greeted, offering a hand shake to both of them. "I'm Arthur Grayson, and I head the Cyber Space Global Operations." Taking a seat across from them, "I've read over the initial report you had ready for us, and I'd like to go over a few things."
The blonde woman, Angela, she quirked an eyebrow as she looked around the room. "And you're not rounding up the teenagers I mentioned?" She questioned, "They'll have plenty of information for you as well."
But Grayson held up a hand, "We'll get to that, as if stands I think those kids have earned a break, we'll watch from a distance for now." He stated simply, "I'm more interested in some of this information you gathered over your time there."
"You'll find my notes quite useful in your operations," She assured with a proud smile. "And I've already began preparations of my own counter measures against these Digital Monsters, should the need arise."
"Now hold on," Hal intervened finally, "I thought we agreed that Samantha and the others are all the counter measure we should need!"
To which she sharply replied, "I agreed to nothing, I simply said what needed to be said so things moved along smoothly."
"I have no intention of putting resources towards digital doomsday weapons," Arthur assured, "I just want countermeasures we can use without putting the weight of the world on the shoulders of a bunch of kids." He added, "I'm not trying to start a war."
Hal didn't seemed to be convinced, but nodded. "Well, I can do better work here than anywhere else, so I'll join this operations group if you'll have me."
"As will I." Angela assured.
Grayson seemed satisfied with the response, "Good, for now let's focus on this report, there are a few things I'm having trouble understanding."
Angela leaned back in her seat, "Go right ahead, I'll answer any questions you have."
What implications this new information would have on the human world, none could be sure. But it was clear that there were those who refused to be taken off guard by an invasion from another world again.
Whether or not that is a good or bad thing, they'd have to wait and see...
. . .
? ? ?
. . .
"Alright, why don't you try opening your eyes?"
"Okay..."
"Good! I know it'll take some getting used to, but this is going to be your new home."
"This feels... Weird... What about my family?"
"They'll be able to visit you on these screens, and in this space you can have whatever you want, just tell me and I'll program it in for you."
"How long do I have to stay here?"
"... Well, however long it takes for your real body to heal, but don't worry! I'm sure you'll be out of here in no time."
"I hope so..."
"I'm going to disconnect now, but if you have any trouble or need anything you can reach me through that buzzer on the wall."
"Okay... Thanks Doctor."
"Oh don't thank me, this is all only possible because of the Cyber Core, and your generous benefactor supplying the funds for all of this."
"R... Right, well tell them all I said thanks, I guess."
Moments later, after a few more awkward goodbyes, he was gone. Leaving her alone in this digital space, this fake world.
For now, it was nothing more than a lavish bedroom with lots of open space and a large soft bed.
She approached and took a seat on the edge, sighing heavily.
"Better than being dead, I guess..."
Before something caught her eye, a small bit of movement in the pile of stuffed animals that completely filled one corner of the room.
She stood slowly, hesitantly approaching. "Wh-Who's there?"
Before a round, smooth surfaced egg rolled out.
Mostly white, with a few burgundy streaks crossing it horizontally.
"Is... That a giant egg?"
It rolled over to her feet, bumping against her shins while she remained frozen with confusion.
It began to split, cracks spreading across the surface.
"Wh-What is this?"
As her eyes stared into the cracks, a single orange iris stared back at her...
