The Shortcomings of Love
Everyone knew who she really loved. The one that made every day worth living. Just hearing him saying hello could lift her spirits. She joined in him joy and in sadness. She was there in every break up and every new relationship. She never said anything, never made any moves towards him. He had dated nearly everyone in her house. Everyone except her. Every day she would wake up hoping that he would declare his never-ending love for her. But each day was a disappointment. There was another boy, though, that felt the same way about her. She would brush him off, too centered on her feelings for the boy who saw her as nothing more than a friend. It was raining the day he asked her out. The boy who she didn't love with every fiber of her being. But she said yes anyways. She couldn't deal with the heartbreak. She didn't notice her old love stiffen when they came into the Great Hall together after going to Hogsmeade. All she saw was the boy who actually asked her out, the one who would love her forever… She sat at her usual seat. Across from him a couple seats down. Her boyfriend, she guessed, sat down next to her instead of in his usual seat of command next to him. He gazed down the table at her, confused… She had never accepted his advances before, what had changed? She smiled sadly at the boy who would never know how much she loved him and turned to face the man she would most likely spend the rest of her life with. Years later, an hour before she walked down the aisle, he came into her room.
"I've always loved you, you know? I was too scared that you wouldn't say yes to ask you out."
Her heart crumbled. A tear slid down her face as she faced her first love and said the hardest thing in her life.
"I loved you more than you will ever know. I was there, every single time… When you asked out yet another girl my heart would twist and I would cry myself to sleep. When you broke up, I was elated… I thought you maybe would finally ask me out. When your best friend asked me out he told me he felt the same way about me that I felt about you. And you know what? I believed him and I still do. He cherishes me. He doesn't love me then leave. He always knew I existed and he will always be there. I've grown to love him. And I won't break his heart like you broke mine all those times you got with a new girl. You'll always be in my heart. You'll be my first true love. But things are complicated now. I'm sorry."
She turned away from the man she loved and tried to fix her hair. As she lifted her hands up, he caught one of them and kissed it. He pulled her close and kissed her passionately. He eased away and whispered into her ear: "One day you will be mine. I'll never give up. True love always finds a way."
He left her there, in her hotel room, trembling. She was overcome with emotions. What did he mean? She got up and calmly walked towards the mirror and resumed getting ready. An hour later she walked down the aisle toward her fate. As she came to the altar, he caught her eye. She broke the contact and stared at the man she was marrying. Sooner than she expected the ceremony was over. Lily Evans was now Lily Potter. Her childhood dreams and teenage fantasies would never come true, she mused a few months later. She would never be Mrs. Sirius Black… But she would always have a reminder that he was once hers. She patted her round belly absently. She knew that Sirius would have been a great father. Lily just hoped the baby would have his stormy and passionate grey eyes.
The End
So… what do ya think?
