Chapter Thirteen: Danger Amongst the Clan
Suyin stared at the man she had trusted with her family for medical needs for years. He sat at the table tapping his fingers while he smiled. Khari had been under strict supervision for three days. Even when getting care she was to be supervised. Suyin had only tasked two guards with watching Khari. Khari had slept since she was brought back to Zaofu but no one expected anything less. Suyin had tried to sleep but when she did she imagined Khari being beaten and that monster licking her blood off of her. Khari's wounds had been taken care of by the man's sister. When they asked her if she knew anything about what had happened, she got so upset and sick at the thought she vomited where she stood. They took that as a confirmation that she knew nothing. She offered to help the family with any mess her brother had caused. Suyin was quite impressed by her work, she was almost better than her brother. Suyin turned when she heard footsteps to see Aiwei, Baatar, and four guards enter the room. The group all looked at the man as he sat there with an amused look on his faced. The group soon entered the room, a guard on each corner while Aiwei, Baatar and Suyin stood on the opposite side of the table.
"Cut the shit Yun, we already know you are a traitor to the city. Why come to my city if you were going to betray me? Why do what you did to Khari? What is your issue with Beifong family?" Suyin asked.
"Has she been taken care of yet? Has the blood been cleaned up? If not, I could make some," he paused for a moment. "Arrangements." He looked up at Suyin as he licked his lips.
"You sick bastard. I should just kill you and be done with all of this. If you want Beifong blood I'll give you a taste of Beifong blood when I beat you to death!" Suyin shouted as she made her way for the other side of the table.
Baatar and two guards quickly moved in, grabbing Suyin before she did anything stupid. The three pulled Suyin out of the room as Yun laughed at her. When they were out of the room Baatar made Suyin look at him. He gave her a small smile as he grabbed her hand. She smiled at him before the two took a final look at Yun. They could tell Aiwei wasn't getting anywhere with him so they decided to go check on Khari. The two strolled, wondering how Khari was handling the whole thing considering she wasn't talking about it. When they got to her room Shen Tao and Ling were standing there watching her sleep. Suyin walked over to Khari's bed, sitting down next to her. She pushed the hair out of Khari's face, tucking it behind her ear. Khari pushed her face further into her pillow before she looked up at her aunt. They both smiled at each other but Khari's smile soon faded. She placed her hand on her face, slowly touching the places that had stiches. She flashed back to the night she was attacked before she pulled away from her Aunt Suyin. Suyin saw the fear in Khari's eyes as she pulled away from her. Suyin reached out for her but Khari backed against the wall. Suyin didn't know what to do so she placed her hand on Khari's leg before she went to get up. Khari grabbed her hand, making Suyin stop where she stood. Khari drooped her aunt's hand as she started to cry, making Suyin turn around. She tried to look up at her aunt but it was hard so she looked at the bed as she cried. Suyin sat on Khari's bed, hugging her. Khari dug her face into Suyin's shoulder as she cried. Suyin started to run her finger through Khari's hair as Baatar rubbed her back.
"I'm so scared Aunt Suyin. I've never felt so vulnerable in my life. I don't know what to do," Khari admitted.
"It's okay, we have him. He isn't going anywhere. We are all here for you. Just try and relax for a while. You need to emotionally, mentally and physically need to heal from this," Suyin told her.
Khari continued to cry into Suyin's shoulder until she fell asleep. Suyin laid her back down, covering her up and tucking her hair behind her ear. She kissed the top of her head before she turned to Shen Tao and Ling. She thanked them again for everything they have done. She and Baatar soon exited the room to go check on the children. When they found their children, Opal was playing with dolls, Huan was making some art, and Baatar Jr. and Kuvira were looking at making something. The two were just happy that during this whole mess their children were on their best behavior. They were happy that none of their children got hurt. Suyin was going to get answers for Yun and make him regret what he did to Khari even if it was the last thing she did. She felt Baatar's eyes on her so she smiled a bit. She looked around when she felt more eyes on her to see the whole family staring at her. She gave them all a puzzled look until she looked down at her arm to see she reshaped her armband. She reshaped it to its normal appearance before she started to walk out of the room. She heard her name but she continued towards her office as her husband called her name. When she reached her office, she grabbed a pen and paper, writing as fast as she could. She didn't even bother to look up when Baatar burst through the door.
"Dear, what are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm getting us some reinforcements. If anyone could get her to open up and help her it will be these three. They may even be able to help us get something out of Yun. If they can't I don't know who can," Suyin said.
She finally looked up as she finished the third letter. She shoved each letter in an envelope and called a guard into her office. She gave her detailed instructions on what to do and where the letters were to go. The guard nodded showing she understood what she was told before she rushed out of the room. Baatar hugged his wife, knowing she was blaming herself for what had happened to Khari. He got the children ready for dinner while Suyin made her way back to the interrogation room. When she opened the door Aiwei shook his head, telling her he still had nothing. Her head snapped in Yun's direction as he laughed. He soon grinned at her as he looked her up and down. She walked over to him, punching him so hard he fell out of his chair. He started to laugh again as he looked up at her with blood coming from the corner of his mouth. Suyin felt someone grab her and she started to get pulled out of the room. When she turned around, she saw Baatar standing there, trying to give her a smile but he couldn't. He urged her to come eat with the family but she wanted to stay in case Yun gave any form of information. She could tell he wouldn't take no for an answer so they walked back towards Khari's room. They thought maybe she would want to join the family for dinner tonight. Khari jumped out of bed when she was offered the chance to leave the room. She was so tired of looking at the four walls she had to call a room. She looked back to see Shen Tao and Ling following them. When they entered the dining area Khari saw a guard had already been told to stand in each corner. Khari stood in the doorway as she looked at the children before she looked down at ground. Khari stared at the table for a bit, only looking up when Suyin's chef placed her meal in front of her. She looked up, giving him a small smile before she looked down at her meal. She listened to the clicking of the silverware but continued to stare at her meal. She looked up when all the clicking stopped and she felt like she was being stared at. When she looked around the guards and her family were all staring at her. She gave them a smile before she picked the fork off the table. She began to push the food around her plate for some time before she looked at the children. She placed her fork on the table and pushed against the table, soon smacking her chair against Shen Tao. He grunted but moved to the side as he held his stomach. Everyone stared at Khari but she didn't feel like eating anymore. Before she left the room, Khari looked back at everyone and gave them a small smile. Suyin sighed as she rubbed her eyes. Khari walked over to the area where Suyin kept her meteorites and pulled a small piece of one of the rocks. Ling and Shen Tao watched as she bent it differently than most metalbenders would attempt to bend. Khari threw the small piece she took and stormed off towards her room. She didn't understand the point of all the guards if they already had the man that already attacked her. When she reached her room, she slammed the door on Shen and Ling. They sighed as the opened the door to see her with her face in the pillow. She screamed in her pillow before she threw it at the two. She put the blanket over her head and went to sleep for the night. Later in the night her bed room door opened, making the two guards look up to see Kuvira standing in the doorway. She slowly made her way for over to Khari, giving her a small smile. She sat on the bed next to Khari, touching the cut above her eye that had required stiches. Kuvira sat in the whole night, falling asleep not long after she entered the room. Early the next morning, not long after the domes had come down three women had arrived in the city. They were soon escorted to the Beifong Estate where Suyin was pacing back and forth. She spotted them and finally stopped pacing.
"Oh, finally you three are here. If anyone I think she will open up to you three. I think that you three could help try to get answers out of Yun, the man who attacked her. Izumi, I hope you won't tell Iroh. She is pretty ashamed of what happened. Katara and Kya I was hoping that maybe you could help with something. She misses you guys," Suyin rambled.
The three women smiled at Suyin as she took a deep breath and looked at them. Baatar met the four women in Suyin's office and they discussed what had happened the night Khari was attacked. They talked about how they have interrogated Yun for days and he still hasn't said a thing about why he did what he did. Katara thought about what Khari must be going through. She never experienced this before. Even when the Red Lotus attacked, she wasn't so vulnerable, just a little hurt. Baatar and Suyin decided maybe it was time to take the three women to see Khari. When they arrived at her room the group saw Kuvira asleep next to Khari. Kya and Izumi looked at Suyin.
"One of yours?" Izumi questioned.
"In a way. Her parents told us she was a handful and they couldn't control her with her earthbending. Handful is an understatement when we describe her. She reminds me of me when I was younger. We took her in and now she is like part of the family. Only I never expected this. She and Khari didn't get along when Khari first got here," Suyin told them.
Suyin walked over to the bed gently nudging Khari. Khari rubbed her face before she rolled onto her stomach. Kya and Suyin laughed as they thought back to when they were younger. Lin would never be able to deny Khari as her daughter. She acted too much like her. Khari felt someone nudge her again but she wasn't getting up. The sun was barely up and that meant she didn't rise. She suddenly felt cold water being dumped on her. She sat up to see everyone laughing at her. She threw the blankets on the floor as she stared at her Aunt Kya. She groaned as she began to look through her clothes for something to wear. When she finally found something she undressed, ignoring the fact she had three men in her room. All three men turned around until Khari had dressed herself. When she was ready, she hugged Kya and Katara. She didn't think a hug could ever feel so amazing until this moment. She looked over at Izumi who have her a smile. Khari looked around her to see if Kimiko was around but Izumi shook her head. Three was better than none to her. Everyone decided breakfast would be a good idea before they went to check on the interrogation with Yun. In the dining area Suyin's chef had place a raw veggie wrap, a bowl of fruit, a bowl of rice, a plate of seal jerkey, and a bag of fire flakes in front of Khari. The tree women stared at Khari and all the food in front of her but to the Beifong family this was a typical breakfast for Khari. Khari began to shovel rice in her mouth, making Suyin metalbend the bowl away from her. Khari looked at her then looked down at the table. She gave her aunt a half smile as she swallowed the food in her mouth. After the group had finished their breakfast, they made their way for the room where Aiwei was still trying to get answers out of Yun. The group could tell that Aiwei was exhausted from days of interrogation. Shen Tao and Ling had followed only as extra protection. All the other guards were still on high alert from days prior. Khari clenched her fist before she grabbed the doorknob. She felt someone grab her arm but they let her go. She slammed the door open, staring directly at Yun. Aiwei stared at her for a moment before he stood and left the room. She walked over to him slowly as he stared at her like she was a meal. She smacked him across the face, making him laugh at her. She grabbed one of his hands and slammed it against the table before she punched the table, making a spike pierce his hand. She flattened her hand making the spike turn into a bar, trapping his hand. She repeated the process with his other hand and watched as he screamed. She took her hand to one of the corners of the table and looked down when she felt the blood run. Suyin's eyes widened as Khari squeezed her hand above the table and blood dripped on the table. Khari grabbed Yun by his hair in the back of the head as tight as she could.
"You want to taste Beifong blood so bad, here have another taste you freak!" Khari shouted.
She shoved his face into the table where the blood was that everyone heard a crack. She turned his head to the side, still keeping it pressed against the table. She got close to his face as he laughed at her. She pulled his head up to see that his nose had started to bleed. She hit him again but he only looked up and laughed at her.
"Am I supposed to be scared of a little girl? You should be the one who fears me. I licked your blood off of you, remember? I'm not scared of any of the Beifong women why should I fear a tiny Beifong girl?" he tormented.
"Oh no, it's you who should fear me. I'm not like the other Beifong women in my family. I'm one of a kind, limited fucking edition, irreplaceable, got it? I could make your worst nightmares look like your best dreams. Oh, and one more thing. Usually when you fuck with a Beifong you piss off Grandma Toph. Never a good thing because it means you're dead, or barely hanging in there when it comes to her family. Now, be a good boy and give me the answers we want," Khari told Yun as she grabbed his face.
He looked directly at her before he spit in her face. Khari let go of his face and wiped his spit off of hers. She kicked the chair from under him and slammed his head against the table. When he looked up, she saw the blood running from his head and thought back to that night. She slammed her fist on the table, releasing his hands. She kicked him in the side so hard she felt his ribs crack.
"Baatar, Shen Tao, GO! NOW!" Suyin shouted.
The two men bust through the door as Khari pushed the table out of her way to get closer to Yun. She grabbed Yun by the throat and squeezed until she felt someone grab her. She tried to pull away but they started to pick her up. She started to kick and scream. Suyin covered her mouth with one hand and placed the other on Kya's arm.
"Stop! Let me go! He deserves it! HE DESERVES THIS! He left me for dead! I hate him! I hope he dies! I should kill him! Put me down! I said put me down! I should feed him to an animal!" Khari screamed as she was being pulled from the room.
Suyin felt the three women staring at her as she grabbed Kya's arm. Khari pushed her arms against the doorway as the two men tried to force her out of the room. Suyin helped the men push her arms down before they pulled one more time. Kya and Izumi slammed the door shut before Khari could run back into the room. Suyin placed her hands on Khari's face, trying to get her attention. Khari's eyes started to water, making her look down. She pushed past everyone, running to her room. Everyone tried to catch up to her but she was running too fast. She slammed the door behind her, locking it. Suyin tried to turn the knob but it stopped. She started to pound on the door but Khari never unlocked or opened the door. Suyin began to bang on the door harder, hoping Khari would get the hint that she was to open the door.
"Khari Beifong you open this door this instant! You know there are to be two guards in there now open the damn door!" Suyin demanded.
"Shut up! You're not my mom. I don't want those stupid guards. I'm not afraid of anything. You know my parents may not love me but they never would have let something like this happen to me. In fact, nothing like this did happen to me while I lived on the island!" Khari screamed at her.
"Suyin, she didn't mean it. Remember to tell yourself she isn't acting herself. This isn't your fault," Kya tried to comfort her.
Suyin stared into the empty space for a few moments while she tried to get over the fact, she felt like she had been slapped in the face. She wasn't trying to be Khari's mother, just trying to take care of her. Izumi reached out for her but she pulled away and walked away. The three women sighed as they looked at the door. Suyin walked past all of her children into her office. She shut the door and sat at her desk. She pulled a newspaper clipping from one of Republic City's newspapers with Lin, Tenzin and Khari on the front. Suyin smiled at the at the picture as she looked at a younger Khari. Innocence she told herself as she stared at the younger version of Khari. She placed the clipping in a drawer and sighed. She looked at the stack of papers on her desk and began to work on whatever work she had to try and distract her. When dinner time arrived, everyone looked at the two empty seats at the table. Khari stared at the door, wondering what she should do next. She stared at the door until later that night when she knew everyone was asleep. She opened the door, looking down the hall to see if any of the guards were near. When she didn't see any she sprinted down the hall as quietly as she could out of the estate. She found a piece of scrap metal and went to the area she and Kuvira fought when she first got here. She closed her eyes and began to bend the metal, taking deep steady breaths. When she was done, she opened her eyes to see a small metal version of the painting of her grandparent and their friends after the war. She sighed as she looked at the piece of art in front of her. She looked back at the Beifong Estate and decided maybe it would be best to head back in. When she entered the building, she noticed her Aunt Suyin's office light was still lit. She knocked but didn't get a response.
"Aunt Suyin, it's me. Look can we talk about earlier?" Khari asked as she opened the door.
When she entered, she saw Suyin asleep on one of the two couches in her office. She slowly closed the door behind her as she continued in the office. She covered Suyin before she went over to her desk. Khari sat down and looked at the things laying on her aunt's desk. She looked up to see a picture, which made her reach out for it. She couldn't have been more than a few days old in this picture. She was with her parents. What Khari didn't understand is how her aunt could have gotten a picture like this. She wasn't allowed on the island and her parents were never in contact with her aunt as far as Khari knew. She then noticed that there were also pictures of her brothers. Khari looked up when she heard her aunt move, almost dropping the picture. She saw that her aunt was still asleep so she continued to look at the picture. She started to blink back the tears that started to form in her eyes. She didn't understand how she could miss them so much. She took the picture with her to the other couch in her aunt's office. She sat down and continued to stare at the picture like it was going to take her back in time. She laid her head down but her thoughts still raced. She fell asleep a few hours later, still holding onto the picture. Early the next morning Baatar woke to see that Suyin's half of the bed was still empty. He got up and walked towards Khari's room to see Kya and Katara standing outside with the door open. They looked over at him and shook his head. The three soon made their way to Suyin's office to see if Suyin was at least sitting at her desk. When they opened the door, they had to suppress a laugh. Both women had their hair in their face, a slight snore, and had one foot propped on the table.
"You think they made up yet?" Baatar asked.
"With the way they are sleeping it is hard to tell. Hey what's that in Khari's hand?" Kya asked as she noticed the picture frame.
She quietly made her way over to Khari, gently pushing Khari's hand up to see what was in the frame. She smiled at Khari as she gently let her hand down. Khari shoved her face into the pillow on the couch and groaned a bit. She rolled a bit, soon rolling onto the floor. The loud bang made Suyin sit straight up and look around. She looked down at Khari and the two laughed a little. Suyin got up, walking over to Khari. She sat down on the floor next to her and the two women looked at each other. Khari didn't know what she should do. She looked down at the ground but soon felt her hand under her chin. She looked at her Aunt Suyin again to see that she was receiving a smile.
"Aunt Suyin, I'm really sorry. I know that-" Khari was soon cut off by Suyin.
"You don't have to apologize. You're hurt and upset. I know you didn't mean in. I want you to know I'm not trying to be your mother I'm just trying to protect you," Suyin said.
Khari smiled at her before she wrapped her arms around her. She didn't think that she would be forgiven so easily. Suyin looked at the picture frame in Khari's hand to see that she was holding one of her pictures. Khari looked down at her hand for a bit before she realized she was holding one of her aunt's pictures. She stuck her arm out almost hitting her aunt with the picture. Suyin held the picture with Khari as she thought about the day, she was sent this photo. Katara knew Lin still wasn't talking to her so she sent her pictures of each of Lin's children in secret. The day she received Khari's picture she was so excited for her sister. She had her first child and her family was starting to grow with the man she loved.
Fifteen years ago
Suyin stared at the picture attached to the letter from Katara. In the letter Katara said the small girl with her sister and Tenzin was her niece, Khari. Everyone had come to the island to meet her. Katara had told her that Aang thinks Khari has the most beautiful green eyes. She should have figured the first thing on Tenzin's mind would be Khari being an airbender. She had to share the news with Baatar. She was an aunt to the most adorable little girl.
"Baatar, come quick!" she shouted from her desk.
"Is everything okay?"
"Yes, it's great. Katara wrote to me and it turns out my sister, Lin that I have told you about had her first child. A little girl named Khari. She looks like she will break some hearts someday. She already looks strong like Lin too. I hope one day we can meet her. It would be nice to have Lin's children get along with us and the family we build one day," She said.
Suyin blinked a few times when she felt something touch her face to see Khari's hand. Everyone looked at the door when there was a knock. They saw a guard standing there with a note in his hand. He slowly made his way over to Suyin, handing her the note. He stood there and waited for further instructions. Suyin started to read the note before she looked up at the guard who nodded. She handed the note to Khari. Khari began to laugh as she read the note. She knew it wouldn't be long until he wanted to talk to them again. He is a fool if he thinks that she won't get answers out of him. A short time later Suyin and Khari stood in the room staring Yun down. He looked back and forth between the two women. Khari sat on the table close to him, making him pull his hands close to his body. She started to tap her fingers on the table a bit before she smiled and leaned in closer to Yun.
"Okay! I did it because of Toph Beifong! She took my family from me. The triads had been fighting and my mother got caught in an attack. They were arrested but all we got from Chief Beifong was oh I'm sorry. Her Police Force didn't get there in time and my mother lost her life. Then my father started to take out triad members and you know what she did as her last as chief? She arrested him. The man who made her job easier by taking out those criminals. That left me and my two little sister and even younger little brother. I was only thirteen, my sisters were eight and my brother he was five. We were all alone. You deserved everything you got. Toph brought this on your whole damn family," he spat at Khari.
Khari stared at him before she slapped the side of his head. "You're just plain stupid. I'm sorry that your mom died and all but your dad can't kill people even if they were criminals. It's you know kinda against the law. I'm sure my Grandma Toph didn't just throw four kids on the street. Plus, I didn't deserve any of that. I am a teenager that had nothing to do with what happened."
Khari suddenly got a sharp pain in her head, making her feel lightheaded. She felt something wet by her nose, making her put her hand up. She pulled her hand back to see she had blood on her fingers. She started to see a few black dots in her vision so she reached back for her Aunt Suyin. She managed to grab Suyin's arm but let go as she fell to the ground. Suyin started to rush towards Khari but stopped when her nose started to drip blood. Yun started to laugh as Suyin saw black dots in her vision.
"Wh-What did you do us?" she asked him
"Oh Suyin, you didn't really think I wanted to confess everything did you? Didn't you pay attention to your guard that handed you the note, he wore gloves. I laced it with poison. Slow acting poison for my enjoyment but still poison. You'll be dead within fifteen minutes. Your niece might not get so lucky. Even in prison I can get to the Beifong family," Yun laughed.
Suyin fell next to Khari as Yun continued to laugh. The last thing Khari saw before she lost consciousness was her Aunt Suyin reaching for her. The door swung open and Baatar, Katara, and Kya ran into the room. When they looked at Suyin, she had begun to convulse and sweat profusely. Khari began to vomit, rashes started to form, and the three could tell that her breathing was becoming more difficult. Yun laughed as he pulled a key from his sleeve of his shirt, unlocking his cuffs. He slowly made his way for Khari and Suyin, pushing them with his foot. Kya pulled water out, pinning him against the wall. Katara and Kya ran to Khari and Suyin. A woman ran to the door after hearing the guards talk about Yun requesting to speak to the Beifong women.
"What did you and Zhen do? Which of father's poisons did you give them? Yun, I know it is a slow acting one? Tell me right now!" she demanded.
"Oh Jia, I think you forget who the older sibling is here. I'll tell you so you can attempt to save them if that would make you feel better. Bottom self, third bottle in from left. I'd hurry if I were you or they make it," Yun laughed.
Jia's eyes widened as she ran as fast as she could towards her brother's home. When she got there no one was around. She tried to open the door but it was locked. She began to slam her body against the door until she finally broke it down. When she entered the home, she saw her brother had it very neat. She ran over to the shelf where there were bottles neatly placed. She looked for the one Yun had told her about as quickly as possible. When she found the bottle, she nearly dropped it. Yun and Zhen knew what they were doing when they poisoned Khari and Suyin. Jia knew it would be extremely close but she could make the stuff she needed. She started to grab the things she needed to make antidote. She was almost done when she realized that Yun didn't have one ingredient. She cursed under her breath but knew she had it at her place. She grabbed the antidote she had and ran as fast as she could to her home. When she got there, she started to throw things until she found it. When she did, she put it in and started to run back to the two women. She soon felt someone grab her arm tight. She turned around to see her brother.
"Zhen, let me go now! If they die you are not going down for attempted murder you are going down for murder. Two Beifongs. One is the daughter of a councilman and the current Chief of Police and the other is in charge of a city. Now if I were you, I wouldn't want that. Now let me go!" Jia yelled, trying to scare her brother.
Zhen tightened his grip on Jia's arm, making her narrow her eyes. She bawled her fist, punching him the face which made him fall to the ground. She ran to the interrogation room, hoping that the two women had hung on long enough for her to make the antidote. When she entered the room, she could tell that they were barely hanging on. She quickly went over to Suyin, prying her mouth open. She dumped half the bottle in her mouth before she turned to Khari, dumping the rest in her mouth. Khari stopped breathing, making Jia freak out. She looked over at Suyin who was slowly starting to look a bit better. Jia started to shake Khari a bit to see if something would happen. Everyone and everything in the room was soon knocked back by the metal in the room as Khari gasped for air. Jia smiled and laughed a bit as a wave of relief hit her. She got up to double check that the two women were okay. She informed Baatar, Katara and Kya what her treatment plan would be before she told them that her other brother needed to be arrested as well. Baatar nodded and commanded the guards to do so and to not underestimate Zhen. The three gave Jia a sympathetic look as the guards went to arrest another one of her family members for the same crime. All she would have would be her twin sister and she didn't even know about that. Jia smiled at the three before she informed them, she would send some people to help get the two women to their beds.
"Jia, wait! You may gladly stay at the Beifong Estate until Suyin and Khari are okay. We can also arrange for you to get another home here in Zaofu. A better one. If putting them both in our room would help you then you are to do so. The Beifongs are extremely sorry about what is happening. If you need anything please let any of us know," Baatar said sympathetically.
Jia nodded as she walked out. Moments later four men came with two stretchers to assist the two women. They took the two women to Suyin and Baatar's room where Jia was setting things up for treatments. Khari opened her eyes briefly, but quickly closed them. After both women were placed in the bed, Jia sat in the room with two guard for a few days as she completed the treatments. Baatar, Izumi, Katara, and Kya would visit to see if there were any changes. They could all tell Jia was extremely exhausted but she wasn't going to rest until the two woke. Suyin was the first to wake but it still didn't put Jia's nerves rest any. She quickly got up and made her way over to Suyin to check on her condition.
"Suyin, how are you feeling?" Jia asked.
"I'm still extremely tired. How is Khari?" Suyin asked as she sat up and looked around.
"Please, you must rest. You were poisoned with something very serious. Both of you are lucky to be alive. We don't really know much on your niece's condition. She hasn't woken yet. You may have had the poison in your system longer but she is smaller than you. It really took a toll on her body. We just have to wait," Jia tried to comfort Suyin.
"Aunt Suyin, what... what happened? I'm so tired and I feel really sick. Why... why does everything feel so foggy? Where's Yun? Where... where am I?" Khari asked very confused.
"My brother poisoned the both of you. Your currently in Suyin's room so I can take care of you. Now will you both rest a bit more. I'm going to go get the family so they can come see you. They have been extremely concerned for you both. When I come back you better be where I left you," Jia said sternly.
The two laughed before they started to cough. Jia hurried out of the room to gather everyone. When she found them, she smiled at them and told them to follow her. When they entered the room, they saw Suyin staring at Khari as she laid there with her eyes close. The children ran to Suyin, quickly jumping on her. Baatar sighed as Suyin groaned from the pain. Katara and Kya walked over to Khari who didn't even open her eyes. Izumi stood there for a moment before she finally walked into the room. She has seen Khari hurt so many times but she felt like this time was different. Kya sat on the side of bed, placing her hand on Khari's arm to see if she would open her eyes. She smiled before she opened her eyes to see the two Water Tribe women. Katara ran her hand through Khari's hair. Khari sat up and looked at the doorway with a confused look. Everyone looked at her then Izumi who was closest to the doorway.
"Mom? Dad? What are you guys doing here? I thought we... I thought you didn't want anything to do with Aunt Suyin? How did you know I was here?" Khari started to question.
Everyone looked at the empty doorway then looked at her. They looked at Suyin then Katara. Jia sighed as she thought about the list she would have to make. Khari was still having side effects from the poison. She would have to send someone else so she could watch the two to make sure that they didn't get worse.
"It looks like she is still having side effects from the poison. Delusions are actually pretty common. I'm surprised that they both didn't get them during the interrogation. I'll make a list and send someone I trust to go grab the ingredients so I can continue their treatment for a few more days," Jia assured them.
"Thank you. It is nice to know my granddaughter will be in wonderful hands. Baatar, I'm sorry but Kya and I must go back. We didn't tell Bumi or Iroh why we were leaving so if we are gone for too long, they will know something is wrong. If you need anything please let us know. I know Izumi has also mentioned leaving tonight," Katara said.
Baatar nodded as the three women looked at Khari and Suyin. Before they left Katara and Kya kissed the top of Khari's head. Izumi made Khari lay back down before she covered her and kissed the top of her head. They told all of the children goodbye and waited for them to calm down before they tried to tell Suyin goodbye. They reminded Baatar again if he needed anything that he should contact them. Izumi said she would make prison arrangements for both Yun and Zhen to make sure they were out of the city and away from the Beifong family. The children all made themselves comfortable in the bed and fell asleep. Before Khari could fall back asleep Shen Tao walked in the room making everyone turn their heads towards him. He made his way towards Khari sticking his hand around her neck. When he pulled back everyone noticed she had her necklace. Izumi and Kya looked at each other, giving one another a smirk. After giving Khari her necklace Shen Tao nodded at everyone before Jia got his attention. She made a list and asked him to get everything on it as quickly as possible. He nodded again before he rushed out of the room.
"Looks like Iroh will have some competition if Khari stays here long enough," Katara laughed.
"Doubt it. She will focus on being with the Beifong's while being here then move with us and close to Iroh. Boom instant marriage. It will piss Tenzin and Lin off until they are in their grave. I love it. We have push for this to happen," Kya said ecstatically.
"Have you taken into consideration what Iroh and Khari would want? Stop trying to be Kya the matchmaker. You made it work two times okay. Two. Leave my children as well as your brother's children figure out their own love lives. What is with you try to get people together anyway? Especially those two," Izumi pushed.
"Actually, we have to count it as three because Lin and Tenzin count as two. Like I said it would piss my brother off and I'd love that. Spirits Izumi don't tell me you don't see how they act around each other. If you don't you need better glasses," Kya said.
"Okay you two. Suyin and Khari can't rest with you arguing who the other will marry. Let's just leave it at we hope they get married one day and that they don't die before they see that day because at the rate, they are on that might happen," Katara giggled.
The two women sighed as they agreed with the aging woman. They knew she was right at the rate of Khari's injuries she was lucky if she was going to see a wedding day. They said their final goodbyes and left for their respected destinations. Baatar smiled as he watched his wife, children, and niece sleep peacefully in their bed. He thought about how just a few days ago this was almost taken from him. He almost lost her and he would have never seen her eyes shine the way they did every morning. He almost lost the most amazing smile that a man could ask for. He grabbed a chair and sat down next to the bed, holding Suyin's hand. Jia left the family be and asked one of the guards where they had placed her brothers. She decided it was time for a little family reunion.
(Author's Note: Okay so I wanted one of Toph's Chiefly duties to come back and bite her family in the ass later. The poison thing kinda happened randomly like the attack. I rolled with. I figured we could see how environment can cause difference in each person. Jia took what happened to them and wants to help people. Zhen and Yun not so much. I also figured we would have Kya and Izumi argue about Iroh and Khari a bit. I figured I give you guys a bit of a cliff hanger in a way. I thought I'd let you decide what Jia is gonna do with this family reunion with her brothers. Hope you liked the chapter.)
