Jounouchi stared at Iris in confusion and wariness.
"So you want me to spy on Yug for you," said Jounouchi.
"In essence," she agreed.
"And you're paying me to do it. Why?" he asked.
"You have a younger sister, yes?" said Iris. Jounouchi nodded. "Would she be more likely to confide in a male friend or a female one when she's trying not to worry you?"
"Girl, especially if it's personal," he said immediately.
"As much as I love Yugi, I also know my own weaknesses. The fact you joined him during that ridiculous 'Death T' nonsense says he trusts you completely, and while I live in a game shop I'm not as game mad as he or grandpa are. He's more likely to go to you first rather than me if it involves games, which Shadi has heavily implied it will. Particularly Duel Monsters. I can be there for him when he needs emotional support, but I need someone I know will actually be there during the times I can't be there...like during tournaments in between duels."
Jounouchi understood her request now.
"You want to pay me to keep an eye on him during the tournaments since I'll be able to go into areas you can't," said Jounouchi.
"Exactly. The pay is so you have the funding needed to back him up when necessary," said Iris.
Jounouchi looked a lot more comfortable with that idea.
"I would have done it without the cash," he said.
"I know, but this way I can slip you some spending money or living expenses without your manly pride kicking in and assuming it's charity," she said bluntly. "If something major comes up and you need the help, just ask. We can work out an arrangement so it's not entirely charity later. Which reminds me..."
Iris dug around in her bag, and pulled out a key.
"What's this?"
"Spare key to the house," said Iris. "I asked Yugi why the guest room looked like it had been used recently and he said that you had been crashing at the house a few times. This gives you almost unlimited access to crash at the house, and my room has a special lock so you can't enter it."
Which had been added shortly after she hit puberty and learned how to spell against people entering without her permission. She was a fairly tidy person anyway, so it was rare for anyone to enter her room.
Jounouchi looked a tad guilty at that. He always did when he crashed at Yugi's place, because he knew he ate a lot and the shop wasn't exactly pulling in the customers.
"And before you get it into your head that you're taking money from the shop, grandpa actually gets a stipend each month from my parent's account because he took me in," said Iris.
"Say what?"
"My dad was loaded...one of those old blood, old money types. After a bit of confusion regarding the fact I was living in Japan and not England, the bank started sending money to his accounts each month to pay for expenses. It was a safety measure set up by my dad's family in case the head of the family died and only the heir was left."
"Sounds like the sort of nobility nonsense," he joked.
"It is," said Iris, looking pained. "And it's a pain in the ass. There's a reason I only spent two years in England, just to satisfy the requirements on the account rather than attend that backwards school."
She had taken one look at the book requirements, made some subtle inquiries to the ICW, and came to the conclusion she would be better off in her magical cram school than Hogwarts. That she blew the other children out of the water after taking her two exams in the old castle had proven she made the right choice.
The old coot tried to keep her there, but she knew her rights and she wasn't afraid to call in a barrister to fight him every step of the way as the head of an ancient and noble house.
She was not sticking around in such a dreary country when she had grown up in Japan.
Jounouchi stared at her for a moment.
"Seriously? You're rich, from nobility and you're one of the hottest girls in school. Aren't you a bit too perfect?"
Iris snorted out laughter.
"Oh gods, please mention that to Yugi sometime...I want to see his reaction."
A few days later...
Jounouchi did mention it to Yugi, and he started cackling.
"Nee-san, too perfect? She's really lazy, she's territorial when it comes to me, and during that time of the month she turns into an absolute demon. She could care less about fashion and the last time someone insulted Anzu around her, she punched their lights out," said Yugi, laughing. "And don't get me started on what happened when she found out someone was harassing me because of my size. Ushio was lucky she was out of the country when that happened, because it wouldn't have been pretty."
Iris smiled 'sweetly' at her little brother.
"You say the nicest things."
"Nee-san, the last time you caught someone bullying me, they started wetting themselves at the mere thought of being in the same room as you. Personally I'm more surprised Kaiba hasn't suffered from your wrath yet."
Iris' face turned sour.
"Thank you for reminding me about that. I'll need to make sure my feelings are perfectly clear to that egotistical ass," she said annoyed.
Yugi winced.
"Nee-san, don't. I really don't want to deal with Kaiba after me for another reason entirely."
"Why do I have the feeling this is going to be funny for everyone but that rich prick?" asked Jounouchi.
"Nee-san is the revenge prankster from hell," said Yugi flatly. "The spirit in the Puzzle should be glad that so far he's been 'protective' rather than 'harmful', otherwise Nee-san would have done worse than chew him out."
Unknown to Jounouchi, the Yami looked through Yugi's memories of the incident with permission...and then resolutely decided to never, ever do something that would royally piss her off.
Dear gods...if that was what she did to the last person who harassed Yugi to the point of tears, then he was glad that he hadn't done anything to actually upset her.
"So what's her relationship with Kaiba?" asked Jounouchi.
"They had the same tutors together, and Nee-san kept beating him in class. Honestly I think they have too much sexual tension between them," said Yugi without thinking. Then he eeped, and had to duck the grab Iris made for him.
"What was that, you little twerp?"
"Oh come on, even Mokuba could see it and he was trying to get back at me for Yami hurting his brother!"
"Wait, what?" said Jounouchi, staring at Yugi.
Yugi made the mistake of staying still long enough to explain, and ended up in a headlock courtesy of his sister.
"Well when he first came after me, I asked him if it was because Nee-san kept pissing off his brother due to the obvious sexual tension between them...and his first reaction when I said that was 'You can see it too?' before he remembered why he was mad at me in particular. We spent a good chunk of that game commiserating at the fact that both our older siblings were in denial."
Mokuba was slightly less antagonistic when he realized Yugi was Iris' brother. It certainly caused him to be less of a brat the second time, once he realized that Yugi was just as eager to get their older siblings together, if only so they weren't so uptight.
Conspiring against older siblings was something he could agree with every time, especially if it meant the entertainment of poking fun at both of them later. Iris was the only female Mokuba could remember his older brother complain about with any regularity, usually because she kept beating him in test scores.
"Care to explain runt?" said Iris. Jounouchi wanted to laugh...it was so obvious the two were siblings with how they interacted.
Yugi looked at his sister unrepentant.
"Nee-san, Mokuba told me Kaiba was openly considering following you to England to prove he was better right up until he heard where you were going to be and decided he'd be better off waiting until you got back to prove his superiority," deadpanned Yugi.
There was a slight flush on her face at that, before she rolled her eyes.
Yugi wanted to snicker, it was so obvious she had a thing for Kaiba, but they were both stubborn as mules about it.
In Kaiba Corp...
Kaiba was not a morning person. It was fairly obvious by looking at him, but it needed to be stated. For that reason alone he relied on the miracle tonic known as the strongest black specialty coffee he could get his hands on regardless of legality.
Mokuba refused to go near the stuff as he swore it would even eat the lining of a dragon's stomach if you consumed it. The few foolish secretaries who dared to steal from the boss' stash would heartily agree...once they were out of the hospital for extreme caffeine poisoning.
So when he went to take a drink out of his personal cup...you could imagine Mokuba's surprise when he immediately spat it out and glared at it like it had personally offended him.
"What's the matter nii-san, did you finally grow some taste buds?" he asked.
Kaiba's face twitched.
"DAMN YOU IRIS! How many times have I told that twit not to mess with my damn coffee?!" he snarled.
That seemed to be the opening queue for all out chaos in his building. By noon he was still putting out minor annoyances and headaches courtesy of Iris in a full on revenge prank spree against him.
Mokuba, for obvious reasons, was laughing at his brother because he knew very well he was safe from Iris' pranks. Both Kaiba and Iris had made an agreement early on to leave each other's family alone.
Kaiba was well and truly pissed off. So when Iris suddenly appeared, he was ready to strangle her.
"Kaiba... I believe when we started our little rivalry, we both agreed to leave our siblings out of it. So why did you target my little brother with that stupid game of yours?!" she growled.
"...What?" said Kaiba, confused. They had agreed to keep their siblings out of the line of fire because going after them was too low for even him to contemplate since his beef was with her. But he honestly couldn't recall going after her brother.
"Does the name 'Death T' mean anything to you, you ass?" she asked.
Kaiba thought for a few seconds, then paled.
"That runt Yugi is your brother?"
"And the old man you targeted is my grandfather," she said angrily.
"How was I supposed to know that? Your surname is Potter!"
"You of all people should know that blood doesn't make family, you twat!" she shouted.
Outside the room, Mokuba snorted.
"Should I be concerned?" asked Roland.
"Nah, it's just Nii-san having another lover's spat with the only girl who's ever caught his interest," said Mokuba. He listened for a moment and winced. "I may have forgotten to warn him that Yugi was Iris' little brother though."
To be fair, he had been suffering from the penalty game Yugi had inflicted on him at the time and it had slipped his mind. After that he had spent far too much time trying to convince his brother not to completely ruin Yugi for it that he had forgotten all about it.
Roland blinked.
"Isn't Iris the same girl who attended the magical tutoring classes with Kaiba-sama?"
"And is the only one who can outclass my brother, thus keeping his interest," said Mokuba snorting. "One of these days I'm going to lock those two in a room so they can sort out their actual feelings...once it stops being entertaining to poke fun at them for being clueless anyway."
Roland snorted in agreement, then carefully schooled his expression. Even he could agree that his boss needed to loosen up and get a girlfriend, and Iris was the only person who really kept him on his toes.
It was such a nice peaceful day. Then some of Iris' new friends from England showed up and it was all out chaos.
"Luna!" said Iris cheerfully.
"Nee-san!"
"How was the trip?"
"The nargles seem to be leaving Ryou alone, so it was great!"
Luna Lovegood was a lonely girl who had attached herself as a surrogate little sister when Iris was temporarily sorted into Ravenclaw to take her exams. Ryou was an oddball of the school because of his strange black outs and his love of Monster World, which looked more like a "Dungeons and Dragons" knock off than anything.
After a few incidents that couldn't be proven, he had opted to finish his schooling early rather than risk being expelled and his wand snapped over something he swore up and down he didn't do.
Dumbledore was still looking into the reason why several students looked like they had been kissed by a dementor, despite the Ministry's assurances that all of them had been removed after that disastrous year when Sirius Black had escaped.
Luna had bonded with Iris, and being one of the few friends Ryou still had since the incidents started, had dragged her friend with her.
Ryou found Luna refreshing, but was a tad too shy to admit they were dating. Iris found the whole thing adorable, and practically adopted them both.
She wasn't homesick and she would happily hex anyone who said so as to why she did it.
Luna took one look at the confused Yugi, then beamed at him.
Yugi took one look at the way she interacted with Iris, and knew.
"Welcome to our home, nee-chan," he said.
"Glad to be here, nii-chan," she replied cheerfully.
Yugi didn't mind having another sister...besides, her quirky nature was somewhat refreshing.
Solomon on the other hand, was cheerfully explaining to the oddball twins who had taken their time and brought Luna and Ryou with them, the headaches of running a new business. Fred and George listened with avid attention, since they planned to open in Japan rather than England like they originally intended.
Mostly because it meant having their silent partner Iris helping them create new products.
