Story information

This chapter will get a little more technical with specifics of magic. There will be some mentions towards child abuse, please note it won't be extremely in depth of detailed but the subject matter will be there. Not to worry it's not all doom and gloom, I promise there will be some fun laughs ahead.

As a old timey cattle rancher might say "ye ha lets get started!" Please just forget what I have just said

"Hello welcome to St. Mungo's, its time for your checkup"

Aris stood up and followed the worker with Professor Snape. Walking over to the elevator that was already empty and awaiting passengers. Once inside the worker tapped his wand against the control panel, then pressing the button labeled two. Interested as to why the second floor, Aris turned towards the work before asking, "Sir can I ask what is normally done on the second floor?"

The worker seemed pleased about the curiosity about the hospital. While Professor Snape looked indifferent or possible relieved for not being the recipient of questions. The worker explained, "the second floor is used for magic bugs, meaning magic based illness or diseases. We will start the examination here to make sure you aren't carrying anything dangerous"

Agreeing with that line of thought, Aris stopped talking. He instead thought about how it was similar to a book about medicine, he never was able to fully understand the book only getting some key concepts. The words and subject matter of books he read often went over his head, but didn't mean he couldn't try to learn from them.

Next moment a chime sounded and the doors opened back up. The hallway that opened up was extremely long to the point Aris wasn't sure he could see the other side. Large dark green doors lined the hallway, each door was accompanied by a plaque explaining the purpose of the room. The reasons labeled were things Aris had never heard of, even from what little he could remember of his medical books.

Eventually the group had arrived at a door with a blank plaque. The door slid open rather than prying, revealing a remarkably clean room. Cleaner than any room Aris could remember. A white bed sat in the back middle of the room, pillows looking brand new. Desk attached to a wall giving view to the bed. Another dark green door located on the furthest wall sat on hinges.

After walking in the door Aris didn't enter through opened. Two people walked in, looking somehow even more professional than everyone Aris had seen so far.

First was an elderly man with wirily gray hair. A face set into a frown, with multiple small faded scars across it that looked to be almost healed and a single scar on his forehead that looked much older. He wore a white set of robes with green trim. Brown eyes peaking open, as if the man had just woken up. Walking with a small hunch that brought his hight down a few centimeters.

The second to walk in was a middle aged woman. She held a much kinder expression, a small smile that spoke of calming thoughts. Soft green eyes that reminded Aris of the grass hills around his home. Standing at even hight with the slouched man. Wearing the same lime-green robes as the rest of the workers, except that her's had a white outlining.

Both people seemed to be familiar with Professor Snape as they greeted him by name. The woman then turned to Aris asking, "now young man if you could take a spot on the bed and then we can begin". Her tone didn't hold any hidden meanings. That point itself was what started some level of worry for Aris. People didn't often speak to him easily and freely, people didn't often talk to Aris period.

Aris deciding that he didn't have many options he complied. A short hop on to the bed, found him wanting to lean back into the surprising softness. His legs dangled for the bed doing nothing, before his right shoe started to tear at the sole. Leaving his foot somewhat exposed to the rest of the room.

"Hmm Reparo best get new shoes boy" spoke the older man after a flick of his wand. The shoe was repaired to the point Aris didn't think he would have to worry about them for a while. Before anything else the rest of the occupants also waved their wands suddenly three chairs appeared out of thin air. 'Magic can do that! What else can it do? I thought I was pretty good, but I never even thought it could do something like that!' Aris's mind raced with thoughts about magic.

"Okay let's go over what we have before anything, thank you Rupert" the woman spoke to the young man who guided Aris here as the man handed her a stack of papers, before nodding and then leaving the room.

"Mm Lila aren't you forgetting introductions? Seeing as his first appearance is with the Professor here, I don't think the boy is used to all this" cut in the older man before anything could proceed. 'He actually seems really professional now' Aris had to revaluate him.

"Oh true! My apologies, just sometimes get so into routine. I am healer Lila Thornbottom" identified the woman.

"And I am Creatures specialist healer Hippocrates Smethwyck" followed the man.

'Healers? Like a doctor?' Questioned Aris

"Healers use magic rather than just science like muggle doctors do" responded Smethwyck. He continued, "no you didn't say it out loud, just was written on your face boy...that and it's a common question for new folks like yourself" grinning all the while at the flickering of emotions on Aris's face.

"Back to business, now it says here your name is Aris Ruamont correct..." Lila paused for Aris to confirm, as he did with a nod. "...and it says here you are eleven but it doesn't list your date of birth. So when is that?"

Aris embarrassed about his lack of knowledge blushed before turning his head and mumbling, "...I ...on't ...k..ow" his response earned him a single raised eyebrow from Smethwyck, while Thornbottom looked up from her papers in confusion as she didn't properly hear his response.

"The boy seems to have been oblivated at a young age, I presume at the age of seven. It was why I asked for someone of your expertise Thornbottom" Snape answered the looming question.

"Oh dear that's awful! To use such a spell on a child!" Gasped Healer Lila shaking her head at the thought. Leading her to have to tuck back her brown hair that had gotten displaced by the outburst.

"Well then we'll need to test blood for age then" surmised Smethwyck as he scratched his chin. He then walked back to the door he came from. Going through and leaving for what felt like a second before coming back with a cart with medical tools. Pushing the cart besides the bed, pulling a syringe from the assorted tools.

"Your arm please young man, it won't hurt at all" asked Smethwyck in a calm voice, that seemed more awake than before.

Aris stilled at the sight. Not moving a muscle as the healer drew blood from his arm. Aris felt he was far-away from everyone and everything. The moment it was over was when Aris snapped back. The sight of a syringe filled with a red liquid, is what pushed Aris into a different state. One that was much worse.

"All done, see nothing to it...hmmm are you okay?" Hippocrates asked in a soft voice, seeing Aris pale at the sight of the needle now that it was over.

The voice while calm did nothing for Aris as he suddenly started to feel scared. He couldn't understand why, but seeing the needle accompanying a liquid made him instinctively react. His head started to hurt more as it went on. Aris could feel his breaths start to quicken. Hair fell down, signifying movement from his serpents. He gripped his head with one hand, the other on his heart that felt like it would beat out of his chest. He felt even more scared as he didn't even know why it was happening. Shacking he reached for the only thing that truly gave him comfort, his snakes. Upon feeling their scales Aris was able somewhat ground himself. He continued to pet the snakes as he tried to breathe. Hearing mumbling around him, but Aris didn't concern himself with that. He focused on the smooth texture of the scales, their almost glossy shine. Taking a few minutes to gather himself.

Aris finally looked up at the others. He felt embarrassed that he had a freak out over a stupid needle.

"Sorry I don't know why I did that..." Aris quietly apologized. Seemingly more to himself than anyone else.

"It could be trauma the body remembers, even if he can't. I'm starting to understand the warrant for requesting me" Healer Thornbottom pondered.

"Mmm well let's move on to happier news ay? How about it Aris would you like to find out when your birthday is?" Smethwyck asked in a light tone. Driving the conversation away from other thoughts.

Which was extremely successful. Aris desperately wanted to know more about himself, especially after his freak out which confused even him. Aris eagerly shook his head up and down.

Hippocrates Smethwyck responded by pulling out a large bowl with numbers engraved at the bottom divided into two sides. Smethwyck waved his wand and water filled the bowl. He then took Aris blood which was now in a phial and dripped a few drops in. The blood started to cloud the water. Once more waving his wand Smethwyck chanted, "revelare aetate". The mixture then started to drain from nowhere and then left the blood siting and staining specific numbers.

"Well would you look at that. It's 1980 May 23! Well Aris happy birthday to you" the healer congratulated Aris with a kind smile.

The reveal brought smile to Aris's face as he repeated the information given to him. The comfort he felt at the news was amazing. Aris didn't even notice the wetness of his checks till he felt them brushed away by his scaly friends. He laughed carefree, something he hadn't done in a long time. He thanked healer Smethwyck, "thank you, thank you! This is the best birthday ever!" Looking at the man with all the gratitude he could muster.

After letting Aris bask in the clear happiness of the news for a minute the checkup continued. They asked him more questions some he knew the answers to but most he didn't. Then came the obvious question of heritage.

"Now Professor Snape tells me you are possibly a half-Gorgon. Which would be very interesting, would you mind if I examined your hair and snakes for a moment?" Smethwyck probed.

"Oh yeah sure. Just give me a sec" Aris causally responded, feeling comfortable with the man. Aris turned to his snakes and told them to behave in Parseltongue.

"Mmm they seem to be lesser black whips, but seem to have some kind of leucism. Mmm interesting" Smethwyck spoke as he wrote things down, before asking more questions about venom, diet, and control.

"Yeah the have venom, they can eat but don't really need to as far as I know and as for control... I'm not to sure, they are more like a really smart arm I guess...it's hard to explain...I don't actively control them it's more like they act subconsciously unless I tell them to do something specific verbally. Yeah that's kinda how it is" Aris struggled to put into words taking time to pause and think.

Smethwyck asked about his abilities. Wondering what he could do in comparison to a full Gorgon. Aris dejectedly told him he could turn people to stone and he didn't know about his resistance to poisons.

"Well as for poisons the only way would be able to test, which I would only do with small less harmful ones and we have a blood sample so I can test it against some illness, as for petrifying we might see that once you go through puberty. Some half-breeds only are able to access species abilities after maturing" easing the concerns. Then adding a possibly "you might grow more snakes as you get older we can't tell if Gorgons grow them or birthed with them as most are extremely secretive, so most ideas we might have are speculations, also you might have stronger muscles and better endurance than the average person. Again would require further test and I don't know how long we will have you in our care" sounding remorseful at the loss of answering such questions.

"Well now that most of the physical aspects are taken care of, let's move onto intangible aspects" Healer Lila guided the focus back to the checkup.

First she started with asking about magical outbursts, which Aris responded that he didn't know of any and always had some control of his magic. Which prompted a showing of Aris levitating objects around one at a time. Telling her other small uses of magic. After which she told him she would need to check his magic core. Telling Aris to remove his shirt and lay down on the bed.

Aris had some reluctance to do so as he was hiding something on his body. He eventually complied after being told if he had scars that they would be able to magically heal them. Upon lifting his shirt there was a slight gasp. While there was plenty of scars, some his own fault through accidents others more purposeful when Aris couldn't get away from some of the hired "help". The most striking was the large marking above his heart. A mark that looked both burned and tattooed on, was a large VII the Roman numeral for seven. Aris never knew how it appeared and it took a while before he knew what it even meant.

"A ...cursed mark" Lila spoke softly as if the mark itself would be spooked. Confused at what she called his mark Aris looked around and saw similar somber looks on the other two men in the room.

"Cursed? What do you mean?" Asked Aris in a firmer tone. If he was cursed he wanted it gone. He always thought it was just a stupid brand that was meant to label him as a thing not a person, which wasn't the happiest thought but it was all he could come up with.

"A cursed mark is a permanent brand that often has magic imbued in it for different uses" surprisingly it was Snap who shared this information.

"Well what's in it then sir?" Aris urgently wanted to know. If it was permanent then what if it could kill him at any time!?

"Severus I think it would be best if he was moved to a more permanent room till we can bring in a curse specialist" Smethwych turning to Snape spoke quick and concisely.

"Wait what! What do you mean?! Is this going to kill me?" Aris was growing fearful again at the unknown aspects in play. He needed to know, because knowing helps keep one alive and Aris desperately wanted to keep living.

"Calm down Aris. We just need to monitor the mark, if you had it this long it probably isn't anything too serious, and it wouldn't be able to kill you outright" Lila attempting to calm Aris. Only partially succeeding, he was worried but this was a hospital and probably the best place Aris could be for something mysterious.

After some more discussion between everyone about further plans and boarding for Aris. He calmed down enough to continue the examination, only somewhat on edge. The idea of a new home appealed to Aris, in a place that had provided more answers to his life than anywhere else combined. He breathed once more and told them he was okay to continue.

Aris didn't pay as much attention after that point. He responded when questioned. Heard things about his magic core and what it meant, things about health and rescheduling a mind checkup for when he was in a better headspace and other things. He tried to listen about what they told him but it was hard, he kept thinking about the mark and what it would mean. He felt angry that this mark could affect his life so much, he wanted to know all about it, 'I have to learn more so that this never happens again and so I can hunt down the person who did this to me, they must know more about me and why I can't remember things. I am me and won't let anyone or anything hold me back!' A silent declaration of what his goal now was. Before it was survival, now it was knowledge and freedom. Now he needed a way to reach them and he had a clear path: Hogwarts.

Aris turned to Snape with new found vigor and declared to him, "I'll be the best student hogwarts has ever seen, and one day I'll brake this mark and be the greatest magician the world has ever seen! I promise you that professor"
