Chapter 6
While the brothers worked on making the ditches deeper, all three wondered about Oscar's awful plan. Just the thought of ensnaring the sisters repulsed Franco, especially Sarita.
He can't imagine being with a woman like her. He loved women, but his types are usually beautiful, curvy, glowing skin, and flowy hair like Rosario. Sarita couldn't compare. She couldn't even compare to her little sister, Jimena. Now that's another one who fits Franco's standards. Jimena accentuates herself more with her feminine wiles. The way she dresses is more youthful, the way she smiles with her eyes, and the way her dark locks always flow behind her when she walks. Jimena was a beautiful woman. Sarita, on the other hand, is much too bland for Franco's taste. She's always covered from head to toe, she barely smiles, and she acts as if everything is beneath her. As small and dainty as she appears, Sarita is feral and lacks so much flavor. There's no way he could ever seduce that one. He mind as well take Jimena and fulfil his revenge. But does he really want to though?
Franco broke out of his reverie when he saw Eva running to him and his brothers. From the look on her face, she didn't seem calm. This worried him.
"Franco, Juan, Oscar…" she gasped, out of breath.
"What is it, Eva?" asked Juan, who seemed to not notice the older woman's manic behavior as he continued digging in the ditch.
"I came here to warn you." she says, her eyes wide. "They're here."
"Who's here?" asked Oscar.
"Mrs. Norma, Mr. Fernando, and Mrs. Gabriela." she answered, looking over her shoulders.
At the mention of those names, Juan finally stops working. The three brothers are now staring past Eva's head.
"So they're finally here."
"They arrived unexpectedly." Eva said rather quickly. "Please be careful."
The three brothers all share a look.
"Be very careful." she warned before heading back to the front of the mansion.
The three brothers now are being fed and watered in the Elizondo's kitchen, but the three couldn't enjoy the meal. Franco and Oscar are trying their best to control Juan's temper. Juan was so determined to see the widow as soon as he heard of her return that he stopped working and wanted to storm into the mansion. Oscar had to stop him before he tried something he will soon regret. Things have to go according to Oscar's plan, in which Franco and Juan are still on the fence.
After a few hours of settling Juan, the brothers are back outside to do their work, until Eva approaches them again. Juan, although he is better, is still impatient about reclaiming his rights from the Elizondo widow.
"You have every right to complain about what happened." she begins to say. "But any violent action will not be permitted."
"Don't worry, Eva." assured Oscar, standing at Juan's side to make sure he doesn't get temperamental. "We won't resort to violence."
"If I were you", warned Juan, "I wouldn't be too sure."
"We're not attacking anyone, Juan." scolded Oscar. "We have to act like sensible beings. As if we were workers who knew nothing about her."
"Don't worry, Eva", said Franco. "Nothing bad will happen."
He remained calm, when his mind was strictly focusing on Oscar's seduction plan.
"At least for now." added Franco.
"I'm begging you." pleaded Eva, not sure how to feel about Franco's statement. "Try to pretend as best as you can."
Moments later, the three brothers are to report inside the mansion to meet with the widow. Franco and Oscar looked at their older brother and advised him to control himself.
Within minutes, they saw her. The Elizondo widow. She was waiting for them in the family room. The brothers gulped down a breath, because this woman, as elegant as she appeared, held herself with so much pride. She was intimidating. Her piercing blue eyes scanned each of the brothers. Franco could see where Sarita got her rough character from. Perhaps, she really isn't adopted after all.
"So you're the workers?" she asked, her voice just as prestigious as her appearance.
"So you're Mrs. Gabriela Elizondo." challenged Juan. Franco began to get uncomfortable and he felt Oscar tense beside him.
"I was sure there would be more of you." she said, seeing that there were only three of them before her. "What are your names?"
"Franco Reyes."
"Oscar."
"Juan Reyes." Juan answered, annunciating his name with so much malice.
The widow narrowed her icy eyes.
"You're brothers."
"Yes, we are." assured Franco.
Gabriela cleared her throat.
"The architect mentioned ten or more workers. What happened? Why only you three?"
Eva chimed in to answer but Gabriela cut her off.
"I'm not asking you, Eva." she scolded her and then turned her eyes to the men. "I'm asking them. Let the gentlemen answer."
Eva stayed silent and looked nervously at the brothers. Franco and Juan glanced over at Oscar, who they trust can sneak his way into this one. Out of the three, Oscar was the most cunning.
"The architect thought that since it's a small project, there was no need for more workers." he lied.
Franco stared at Oscar, incredibly amazed at his manipulative skills.
"And it's not a matter of saving." Oscar continued. "He did it out of consideration for you, m'am. We may take a little longer but at least you won't have to tolerate a bunch of men coming and going all over the place bothering you with their yelling, damaging your gardens."
Gabriela seemed to be eating up his lies.
"M'am, with just us three you will have peace of mind, if you may."
Oscar finished speaking and all Gabriela could do was raise her eyebrows and nod in understanding. She agreed with Oscar's little speech and informed them of her gratitude. Once they were dismissed, Juan lingered a moment but had to be dragged out by Oscar, who whispered to him to sustain himself.
On their drive back home, there was another uncomfortable silence. Franco looked at both his brothers and he could swear he saw steam coming out of their nostrils at the mere memory of finally meeting with the dreaded Elizondo widow.
By the time they got home, the three brothers fell into a great depression, especially Juan, who is now standing by the window, his thoughts running wild with revenge. Franco sits by himself on the sofa, his hands dwindling with his hat. Oscar paces and soon breaks the silence.
"Based on what we said to Gabriela, I understand you accept my plan, right, Juan?" asks Oscar, still pacing. "We'll do things as I said, okay?"
"I can't make any promises." Juan responds, finally taking his eyes away from the window.
Oscar stops pacing and glares at his brother.
"Stop being so stubborn, Juan!"
"That woman is exactly how I imagined her to be." he muttered, his eyes boring into the distance. "She's a tyrant used to exerting her every will, humiliating everyone under her. With just looking into her eyes, I know Eva wasn't lying."
He paused to look at both his brothers, who are in their own thoughts.
"She must have humiliated Libia in the worst way." he added.
"What are we supposed to do then?" asked Oscar.
"Don't do anything if you don't want to!" bellowed Juan. "I'll do everything!"
"Juan, I'll just say it again", cut in Franco who sat calmly in his sofa, "be careful with your temper."
"I won't hesitate to squash her as she deserves." seethed Juan. "I could kill her coldly just as she killed Libia."
Franco had enough and stood up.
"No one killed Libia, okay?" shouted Franco.
"Let him be, Franco." said Oscar with utter sarcasm. "Let him do whatever he wants. I could see the massacre now!"
Oscar starts making gun-like noises and then crashes down on the sofa angrily.
"Blood everywhere! One madman enters the ranch, kills the owner and the entire family! What a headliner! We'll rot in jail in no time! Bravo, Juan!"
Oscar begins to clap, mocking Juan, whose patience was running thin.
"Then I'll do it alone!" Juan bellowed. "Leave me alone, if you want. I'll be alone! Betray the oath you took, don't keep your word!"
"We'll keep our word by using our brains, I told you!" argued Oscar.
Juan sits in front of Oscar.
"I'm not smart like you," he confessed. "Or a coward like Franco. I'm a brute. I accept the consequences of my actions!"
Juan gets up and starts going for his room.
"Don't worry. Just leave me alone. I won't berate you for abandoning me. But my word comes first.
He takes a good look at both his brothers, who eye him with fear.
"My one law is an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I demand their lives for the life of my sister!"
With that said, Juan walks to their bedroom and slams the door, leaving Oscar and Franco distressed and worried. Later that night, Franco dreamt of the widow sitting with her two daughters, Sarita and Jimena in their family room. All three were clad in white dresses. The three women jump when they are disrupted by an angry Juan who pulled out a pistol. The women were shouting and pleading but it wasn't enough. Oscar and Franco tried to stop him, but it was too late. Juan shoots both sisters in the heart and twice at Gabriela in the head and chest.
Franco woke up, covered in sweat. He looked over to where his brothers were and was relieved to see Juan sleeping soundly. He settled back into his bed and prayed that dream won't become a reality.
Franco and Oscar were extremely nervous on their way back to the ranch. The two kept their guards up whenever they looked over at Juan, who could be capable of doing anything, given his temper from last night. As soon as they got to the ranch, Franco and Oscar were a little at ease at how calmly Juan worked. So far so good.
While they worked, both Franco and Oscar set their eyes on a man with short dark hair and a tan blazer. They found out his name was Fernando Escandon, who didn't sit well with any of the brothers due to his air of arrogance. His wife must be just as worse than he is. They are still anxious to meet her, just to see if she's anything like her mother or sisters. Franco shuddered at the thought of another Sarita, and hoped the third sister would be like Jimena.
The three go back to their digging and stop when Jimena comes into the balcony.
Franco smirks to himself when he sees that she came out in her satin bathrobe that barely covers her blossoming cleavage. Oscar turns around and smiles when he watches her slip her fingers through her dark long hair.
"She can't stop looking at us." he says to Franco. "They're into us."
Franco tears his eyes from the flirty young woman and pursues his digging. Jimena might be into them, but not Sarita.
"If we can seduce those women, we'd have our perfect vengeance."
Oscar looks back at Jimena, who is now leaning over the balcony, bearing more of her cleavage with a knowing smile on her pretty face.
"And maybe even more." adds Oscar tearing his wandering eyes from Jimena to his little brother. "But if we hurt or kill someone as Juan suggests, we'd lose everything, don't you see?"
"Then come up with a better plan because neither Juan nor I like it." said Franco. "I don't agree on seducing women that do not interest me."
He meant it. He only has eyes for Rosario. Sarita and Jimena aren't half the women Rosario is.
"Oh yeah?" taunted Oscar. "But you used to do it. To ugly and old women."
Franco shot him a sharp look, remembering all the times Oscar would try to pimp him out to wealthy women, like Eduvina Trueba. He shuddered at the memory in disgust.
"Because I was an easily manipulated idiot. I'm disgusted by what you're making me do."
"Are you disgusted by the easy money you made too?" teased Oscar, grinning at him while passing him an extra shovel.
"I won't do it, okay?" affirmed Franco. "I don't like either yours or Juan's plans."
Franco storms over to where Juan worked quietly, leaving Oscar, who wasted no time in giving Jimena a good show by taking off his tank.
Hours later, Juan began to get anxious and almost tried to bash his younger brothers for not permitting clearance to Gabriela, who apparently was alone in the mansion. Eva saved them when she asked the three brothers to help Mr. Martin down the stairs because he wanted to go out. Once they've helped the older man, they were confronted by the angry Gabriela who scolded them for helping her father. Juan was livid. After Mr. Martin strolled away in fury, Gabriela angrily stormed up the stairs to her room. Juan thought this was the perfect chance to take his revenge so he began to pursue her up the stairs, only to be stopped by both his brothers.
Juan calmed down eventually and took his anger out on the ground. Pounding, scraping, and digging for all he was worth. Franco drew in a breath when he saw the widow approaching them. She didn't look happy.
"Hey, you!" she called out to Juan, who was shirtless and thoroughly invested in his work. "You!"
Juan stopped digging and stared at her. Franco and Oscar also stopped working and paid their attention to the widow.
"Please come here." she ordered, crossing her beige shawl over her arms.
Juan sat his shovel down and approached Gabriela, who eyed him up and down. She then starts glancing over at Franco and Oscar, who remain perfectly still.
"None of you", she begins to say "will ever enter the house without my authorization even if my father calls for you."
She pauses and stares at the lack of clothes on Juan.
"In second place, please cover up. This isn't a nudist beach or anything like it. This is a decent family and we will not tolerate this. If you don't, I will call the architect and have him replace you."
With one stern glare, Gabriela turns on her heel and begins to walk back to her house.
This infuriated Juan. Without thinking it through, Franco and Oscar watched their brother pick up an axe and walk to where Gabriela was going. Franco and Oscar toss their shovels in fear and run to stop their tyrant brother.
Soon Juan stopped in his tracks when he heard an unfamiliar voice. A woman's voice. Juan, Oscar, and Franco are all rooted in their spot when they finally see the eldest daughter of the Elizondo, and damn was she a beauty.
Franco and Oscar steal glances at each other and then back at the young woman and Juan, who appeared to have been paralyzed as he stared at her. From the looks of all this, it seems like Oscar's plan was about to override Juan's original plan of revenge.
Let the seduction begin.
I was just anxious to write this one away really quick! I can't wait until I reach more of Franco and Sarita scenes! Okay... chapter 7, here I come!
