"Yes, may I help you?" Jakob graciously offered to his reflection in the usually secluded lake near the castle. He then shook his head and waved his hand dismissively. "No, no, the pleasure is all mine." He smiled reassuringly. "I am simply happy to help my fellow servant as best as I can. After all, aren't all of our goals the same? To serve Master Corrin as best as we possibly can?"
"Um, I guess?" a familiarly dull voice answered from behind him, causing him to jump up and yelp in horrified surprise. "But I'm not exactly one of Corrin's servants, so what would I know?"
Jakob took a moment to recompose himself before turning around and giving Ananias an incredulous grimace. "Ananias, do you mind?!"
Ananias cocked an eyebrow at this. "Mind what?"
"Another man's privacy!" Jakob exasperatedly answered. He shook his head disapprovingly. "Honestly, is nothing sacred or important to you?"
"Lots of things are important to me," Ananias answered quietly. "That's usually why I try to stay out of them."
Jakob groaned. "And there you go with the unnecessary and nonsensical rambling," he muttered.
"Besides," Ananias continued, "I was sent to get you. Corrin apparently needs you for something."
Jakob's eyes widened in horror. "Oh gods! I was so busy practicing that I didn't realize that I was completely ignoring my responsibilities as a butler!" He then began to make his way back to the castle. "I must be at Master Corrin's side at once!"
"That's the idea," Ananias deadpanned. As he and Jakob made their way back to the castle, however, he then asked, "So, what exactly were you practicing all the way out here anyway?"
"And why ever would I divulge that type of information with you, hmm?" Jakob scoffed.
Ananias simply shrugged. "I don't know. Small talk for the sake of small talk, I guess?" Jakob let out an exasperated sigh. "I mean," Ananias quietly added, "if you need any help with it, I could offer some if I can, you know?"
"You? Offer me help?" Jakob let out a mocking laugh. "Well, that will certainly be the day."
Ananias' eyes narrowed angrily at this. "Hey, I'm not completely useless, alright? I can at least do basic help for your… your…," he struggled to find the right words, "rehearsals? Is that what that was, a rehearsal for something?"
Jakob angrily rolled his eyes and groaned. "Fine. Since you insist on sticking your nose in where it doesn't belong, I suppose I will tell you. But," he raised his index finger, "if I find out that you have shared information with anybody else, especially Master Corrin, then I promise you… your food from then on will always be the slightest bit less delectable than everyone else's."
Ananias' eyes widened in surprise. "Wow. Sounds serious." His face went back to its usual expressionless state. "So, what is it?"
Jakob sighed. "As much as it pains me to admit this, you brought up a somewhat decent point the last time we spoke."
Ananias gave Jakob a funny look. "Um, yeah… what exactly did we talk about last time?"
Jakob gave him an incredulous look. "You do not remember?!"
Ananias nonchalantly shrugged. "Well, it's not like I can remember every conversation I've ever been in, you know? I mean, all I can remember is getting a little bit emotional during it, but after a while, you sort of get over it and forget all of that."
"'A little bit emotional'?" Jakob scoffed. "Could've fooled me. But regardless, I am referring to your comment about how I was acting out of line as a butler."
"I was?"
Jakob growled in frustration. "Yes, you did. You see, I've had ample time to think over what you said to me, and as much as I hate to admit it, you were right."
"I was?"
"Shut up, you simpleton! Or did you change your mind about wanting to hear my woes?"
Ananias shook his head. "No, no, that's fair. I'll shut up now."
Jakob released an exasperated sigh. "Thank you. Anyways, I've realized that my insolent behavior may, in fact, have the adverse effect of disgracing my master in terms of his association with me, so I've decided to become a much more cordial and friendly butler, to better reflect off him, or course."
Ananias thought it over. "Hmm, makes sense," he admitted. "But you don't exactly have to go THAT far, you know? Just be nicer to people. I'm sure that's all that most people would ask for."
"Hmph," Jakob scoffed, folding his arms irritably, "easier said than done, I'm afraid."
Ananias raised an incredulous eyebrow at this. "'Easier said than done'? Just treat other people the way you would want to be treated. What's so difficult about that?"
"Typical," Jakob said, shaking his head in disgust as he did. "You cannot even fathom the simplest of complications, can you?"
Ananias frowned. "What's so hard about treating other people the way you'd like to be treated?" he repeated sternly.
"Well," Jakob said haughtily, "for starters, that couldn't possibly be true!"
"What about it sounds untrue?!" Ananias cried, showing the most emotion ever since he first decided on staying at Nohr.
"Well, let us apply the same logic with you," Jakob suggested. "If what you're saying is true, then that would mean that your version of 'nice' is to be completely useless to only slightly adequate whenever you offer aid to people, and that cannot possibly pass off as being 'nice' to someone, now can it?"
Ananias stared at him incredulously for a moment before screaming, "What's your problem?! I'm trying to help you and this is all you can say to me?!"
"Do not be cross with me," Jakob retorted. "Just because the truth hurts, it does not allow you to behave like an angry child."
Ananias began pacing angrily, attempting to regain his composure, before stopping for a moment, walking up to Jakob, and muttering, "You know what? You're absolutely right, Jakob. Throwing a temper tantrum or starting a fight with you would just be childish, so how about I handle this like an adult?"
Jakob rolled his eyes as he let out a mock sigh of relief. "Finally."
"I'm going to report your behavior to Corrin."
Jakob's eyes widened in horror. "You wouldn't dare!"
Ananias put on a rare, insolent, and mischievous smile. "I'm sorry Jakob, but," he shrugged his shoulders helplessly, "your behavior, for a butler, is unacceptable. And the only one who can do anything about it seems to be your master, so…." He began to make his way back to the castle.
Jakob cut him off before he could get too far. "Did I not make my threat perfectly clear?!" he hissed.
Ananias pushed him out of the way and bluntly answered, "I could care less about your cooking."
Jakob gasped. "Blasphemy!"
Ananias nodded. "It's true," he answered dully. "Besides, your cooking's a little bit too good for me. I wouldn't mind eating the lesser version of it. Who knows? Maybe it'll be more in line to what I'm used to."
"Ah ha!" Jakob cried, pointing an accusative finger at the scarlet retainer. "So you admit to your inability to identify with quality!"
"You can continue to insult me all you want, Jakob," Ananias called as he continued making his way to the castle. "I'm still reporting you to Corrin."
"N-No!" Jakob cried, running after him. "Can we not come to some sort of agreement? Ananias? Ananias!"
