"Hey, Kaze," Ananias greeted as the two happened to pass each other by.
Kaze, having been deep in thought at the time, looked up a bit startled for a moment before finally seeing Ananias and giving him a small, respectful nod in return. "Oh, yes, hello Ananias. How very nice to see you."
Ananias gave him a funny look. "Nice to see you too," he said. He studied the look on Kaze's face for a bit before asking, "So, um, is everything alright? Cause you look a bit… troubled, is all."
Kaze heaved a sigh as he placed his hands onto his hips. "Yes, I suppose I am feeling a bit troubled, aren't I?" he muttered.
"You want to talk it over?" Ananias offered.
Kaze thought it over for a moment before nodding his head. "Yes, I suppose that would be for the best." He then took a deep breath before explaining, "Well, you see, I was making my usual rounds throughout the kingdom, and, at first, it seemed like nothing was truly out of the ordinary."
Ananias nodded. "Uh-huh."
"But eventually I realized that my 'usual' rounds throughout the kingdom were usually a bit more eventful, and at first, I couldn't put my finger as to why, but that was when I looked around and noticed just how sad and standoffish the fair maidens of the land were when I laid eyes on them."
Ananias raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Really?"
Kaze nodded. "Yes, it truly is a bit hard to believe, isn't it? But it was true! One even broke out sobbing the moment I looked at her! It was all so very strange!"
"Well, I mean," Ananias nonchalantly shrugged, "obviously."
"And whatever reason had caused them to behave as such I still have yet to find out! Far and wide, I had asked what had happened to all of them, but no matter who I sought answers from, my investigation was met with nothing but shrugs and ignorance!"
"Wow, really? No one knew what was going on?"
Kaze nodded solemnly. "Yes. It would appear that we have a real problem on our hands, but how can we ever hope to solve it if we do not even know the source?"
"Well, don't go pulling your hair out over it, okay?" Ananias said with a firm pat onto one of Kaze's shoulders. "If you've got no leads, then you've got no leads, and that's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes. I mean, you can't be held responsible for everything, right?"
Kaze sighed and nodded his head slowly. "Yes, I suppose you're right. It's unfortunate, but we can't hope to solve all of the people's problems, now can we?"
Ananias shook his head. "Nope. Just gotta give them the best crate we can offer them and hope for the best. I mean, it's lousy, yeah, but that's life. You did your best to solve it, and it ended up all in smoke. Nothing terrible about that."
"Yes, I suppose I do have that particular tendency, don't I? Holding myself far too accountable for consequences that are a bit too out of my control?" He gave Ananias a small, thankful, and appreciative smile. "Thank you, my friend. I must make it an effort to work on that."
"Ah, no problem. Believe it or not, we've got that same problem, you and I. Being too hard on ourselves for no real fault of our own."
Kaze raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Really?"
Ananias nodded. "Yeah. I just tend to see it in other people more than myself."
Kaze chuckled. "Yes, that seems to be a tendency that everyone seems to share in some regard. What hypocritical creatures we all are."
"Heh, you said it."
The two smiled at each other for a moment before Kaze asked, "Ah, yes, did you ever find a place for all of those gifts I gave you?"
"Not at first," Ananias admitted, "but then one of my aunts came by to visit and realized that a lot of it could be sold for a pretty decent profit, so I gave all of the stuff to her."
Kaze raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Really? You got rid of all of it that easily?"
Ananias nodded. "Pretty much."
"Oh. Well then, good for you."
"You mean good for her. She's the only one really making a profit out of this."
"Ah, yes, my apologies. Good for her then." The two were silent for a moment before a sudden, horrific thought popped into Kaze's head. "Um, do you know, perchance, where your aunt is selling all of my gifts?"
"Huh?" Ananias asked, giving Kaze a small look of confusion. "Oh, well, I'm pretty sure she's doing business within the kingdom right about now. I mean, it's temporary, but that's where she's selling, so…."
Kaze gulped nervously and visibly turned green. "Oh gods, what have I done?"
"Hmm? What do you mean by that?"
"I was given gifts by many fair maidens throughout the entire kingdom… and now a merchant is selling those very same gifts back and is very possibly selling them to those who gave them to me in the first place."
Ananias' eyes widened in surprise. "Oh." They then grew wider upon realizing what Kaze was trying to insinuate towards. "Oh gods!"
"That is why all of the women throughout the kingdom were acting so strangely! It was because of me and my careless and inconsiderate mistake!"
"N-Now, hold on just a moment!" Ananias said. "Don't panic, alright? We can fix this!"
"Correction, I must fix this!" Kaze said with a determined look on his face. "I must apologize to every single one of those women and beg them for their forgiveness!"
"O-Or you could just tell them the truth and explain the situation to them!"
Kaze shook his head. "And cause them even more pain? No. I should have been more considerate of their feelings, and now, because of my selfish haste, I must make it up to all of them!" He then disappeared, no doubt making his way back to the women he was referring to to apologize properly.
"Aw, geez," Ananias muttered as he ran towards the castle doors. "What a mess this turned out to be, huh?"
