"Grr!" Nyx grumbled as another weapon slipped out of her grasp and fell to the ground with a loud clang. Nyx eyed the elusive little thing in frustration as she shook her head and made a careful and tentative attempt to pick it back up while still being careful as to not drop the rest of the weapons she was carrying in the process. "Just my luck that I be placed in charge of weapon inventory and maintenance without anyone else to assist me. With this accursed body of mine, would it be of any surprise if it were to take me all day to complete such a task?" She let out a small sigh of relief upon succeeding in reaching and picking up the fallen weapon without having to drop any of the others and immediately went back to performing her duty... only to let out another exasperated sigh upon realizing that the crate that these particular weapons were supposed to be placed in was a bit too tall for her. Never in a million years would she have realized that placing a multitude of spears into a crate would give her so much grief.
"Need some help with those?" a familiar dull and monotonous voice asked from behind her, startling her so much that she jumped up, let out a small gasp of surprise, and unintentionally threw all of the spears she was holding into the air and making them all fall harmlessly onto the floor. The two of them stared at the mess she had made for a moment before Nyx glared accusingly at the culprit who had caused her to do something so foolish and embarrassing while Ananias looked down at her with a sheepishly guilty look on his face. "Sorry," was all he could mutter as he knelt down to help Nyx clean up the mess they had made.
The black mage sighed. "That's quite alright," Nyx said, with a noticeably frustrated edge in her voice. "In the end, it was more my fault than yours." They picked up all the spears and, with Ananias' help, placed them into their designated crate before she crossed her arms, and asked, "So, you came here to help me, yes? Why?"
Ananias raised an eyebrow in surprise at Nyx's response. "Do I really need a reason?" he asked.
"No, I suppose not," Nyx admitted a bit petulantly. "But if you came by to help simply because you thought I would not be able to handle myself, then you just know that I take offense to that. I can handle myself just fine, thank you very much."
"Well, I mean, I'm sure you can," Ananias said carefully, "but it's just... you're a bit tiny, you know?"
Nyx blushed profusely at the word Ananias chose to use to describe her body. "Tiny?!"
"N-No offense," Ananias quickly said.
"A little bit too late for that, don't you think?" Nyx muttered under her breath.
"W-Well, so anyway," Ananias stammered, "once someone finally realized that leaving a little kid to do all the work by themselves may have been a goof on management's part, I got volunteered to help you out, and, well, here I am."
"Hmph," Nyx huffed, still far from impressed by the explanation given to her. "How many times must I say this? Despite my appearance, I am most definitely not a child! Especially not one who must be babysat and taken care of every second of the day!"
"Well, no offense, but with a tiny kid body like yours," Ananias indicated towards said body as he said this, "not a lot of people around here have any reason to actually believe you." Ananias' eyes widened upon making a sudden realization. "Unless you're not just a late bloomer, you're actually something else entirely."
Nyx raised an eyebrow in confusion. "Hmm?"
Ananias looked down at the ground, holding his chin as he was deep in thought. "Well, I guess based on everything I've seen, there's bound to be some kind of explanation for it," he muttered.
"Ahem," Nyx irritably said, "um, excuse me? Just what are you blabbering on about?"
Ananias then looked at inquisitively and asked, "Hey, you don't happen to have some kind of medical condition that keeps you looking like a kid, do you?"
Nyx let out a surprised gasp at the sudden question before crossing her arms, averting her eyes to the side, and quietly answering, "W-Well, it's certainly something, but it's nowhere near as serious as that. Well, I mean, at least I think it isn't."
"Hmm," Ananias said, studying Nyx carefully as he did. "And you definitely don't look like a manakete or have any of the abilities of one."
"Um... a 'manakete'?" Nyx asked.
"Half dragon people who can live for centuries," Ananias nonchalantly answered. "They look really young as a result. The oldest one I've ever met still looked a young woman. But you're not one of them, are you?"
"Er, no, I'm not."
"Yeah, I figured. The lack of pointy ears are a dead give away." He then thought it over for a moment. "Unless you're lying to me and you want to keep the fact that you're a manakete a secret and you're actually using a spell to hide what you really look like." He shrugged. "Or you're just a normal human being who placed a spell on herself to look young. That's possible too, I guess." He looked down at a shocked Nyx. "Well, is it?"
"Um, well," Nyx stammered, shocked that Ananias was able to very nearly l, though admittedly vaguely, deduce her complicated situation and unsure as whether to come clean with him on it or not, "considering that I do not like being referred to or treated like a child, wouldn't it make more sense that it would be a curse rather than a spell I placed on myself? A-After all, if it were a spell, I would just dispel it the moment it would cause me any problems, right?"
Ananias nodded. "Yeah, I guess it could be that too." His eyes then widened upon realizing that Nyx had guided him towards that particular conclusion. "Wait, is that it? You're an adult woman cursed to look like a child?"
"W-Would you believe me if I said yes?" Nyx carefully asked.
"Well, I mean, you'd still have to explain how it all happened, but yeah, sure, why not? Believe it or not, I've seen and heard of crazier things than that."
Nyx gaped at him for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh of relief. "Oh, thank the gods."
"So, you're going to tell me, or what?"
Nyx nodded, a relieved smile on her face as she did. "Well, considering the fact that you sort of figured it out all on your own, yes, I see no reason not to." She then frowned. "But not at this very moment. We have work to do, or did you forget all about that?"
Ananias gave her an embarrassed wince. "Um, yeah, kind of."
Nyx let out an amused chuckle. "Hmph, and you're usually so dependable."
"D-Did you just make a playful jab at me instead of a normal jab at me?" Ananias asked incredulously.
Nyx nodded. "Let's just say that I'm a bit relieved that I was found out. At least by a little bit." She then gave him a quick warning look. "And I wish for us to keep it that way, understand?"
Ananias quickly nodded his head. "Y-Yeah, sure, of course."
Nyx smiled. "Good. Now, let's get back to work now, shall we?"
"Y-Yeah." Once Nyx went back to work and was out of earshot however, Ananias quickly and quietly muttered, "Man, I seriously did not expect this development when I agreed to help out here."
