"Why, if it isn't everyone's favorite messenger!" Niles melodramatically cried, wrapping his arm around a stone faced Ananias' shoulder and giving him a playful smirk. "Tell me, how goes things with you lately? Because if I didn't know any better, I'd say that you were avoiding me."

Ananias sighed and said, "I haven't been avoiding you, Niles. I've just had no reason to talk with you specifically."

"My my, a straight shooter, aren't we? I can certainly respect that, though I must say," he gave Ananias an indignant pout, "your answer was quite hurtful. Is it really so hard for you to put some time into your little schedule to fit in some time with me? Am I just not a man of your fancy, or is the thought of me being squeezed into something as tight as a your schedule a bit too much for you to handle?"

Ananias sighed and properly turned his attention toward his fellow retainer. "Okay, fine. You have my attention and I'm not doing anything right now, so what do you want to talk about?"

Niles smirked triumphantly. "Ah, how kind of you! Well then, I must not waste this chance, now can I?" He rubbed his hands in excited anticipation. "Alright then. How about we undress you then?"

Ananias raised an eyebrow in surprise as he quizzically folded his arms. "Excuse me?"

Niles chuckled into his fist and shook his head as if he had just remembered a really funny joke. "My apologies, I misspoke. I meant to say that I am interested in uncovering you."

"Huh?"

"Diving deeper into you?"

"... I don't follow."

"Explore the innermost folds of who you really are."

"Something about folds?"

"To peer inside you."

"Like, psychologically?"

Niles frowned before letting out a disgruntled and disappointed growl. "Oh, forget it. It's no fun if the reactions are subpar such as yours have been. I'm simply asking for you to share with me a bit of your past, understand?"

Ananias slowly nodded. "Well, I certainly do now."

"Well then," Niles asked, crossing his arms as he waited impatiently for his answer, "will you tell it to me or not? Because if it is the latter, then I can assure you," he gave Ananias a mischievously dirty smirk, "I have my ways of squeezing whatever I want out of my... victims."

"Well, that's a strange thing to be classified as," Ananias muttered, "but since saying things strangely seems to be your thing... sure, go ahead."

Niles frowned. "Hmph. To reduce my fun into a thing I merely do out of habit... you really are a naughty boy, aren't you?"

"Actually, I think 'naughty' would be the last thing anyone I know would call me."

Niles smirked as he let out a chuckle. "Well then, I am honored to be the first."

Ananias stared at him stone faced for a moment before giving Niles a nonchalant shrug. "Okay... if you really want to look at it that way, then by all means, be my guest."

Niles sighed and gave him a dissatisfied frown. "Honestly, what kind of reaction is that?"

"An... honest one? I mean, if you want to think of it as an honor, then I can't exactly stop you, you know? I'm just going to have to accept it and move on."

Niles smirked and chuckled knowingly. "I see." He crossed his arms as he gave Ananias a disparaging look. "You're the type to just let things happen to him. To let other people run his life for him. To simply be led, but never lead." He shook his head and chuckled. "Your life is barely a life at all. You simply exist and let others dictate who you are and how to feel. Despite the fact that you are a man, you are nothing more than a child taking orders from the other adults in your life. You are a shadow. An afterthought. How pathetic. How sad. No wonder being a messenger was your profession before coming here! Messengers themselves are the perfect afterthoughts of our society!"

"Well, I mean, I wouldn't go that far."

"Oh, but I would. I apologize for the rather deep penetration, but what can I say? I simply call them how I see them."

"Fair enough, but you don't have to be so mean about it."

Niles laughed. "'Mean'? Oh goodness, you really are a child, aren't you? Well, I am sorry, little one, but the only person whom I am truly obligated to be nice to are my superiors. You and everyone else? Not so much, I'm afraid." He then began to walk away. "Thank you for the interesting chat, Ananias. It was certainly good for a laugh."

"Oh, um, sure, okay. Glad you got something out of it." After Niles had made his leave, Ananias' eyes widened upon realizing something. "Wait a minute, wasn't the whole point of that conversation originally supposed to be talking about my past?" He scratched the back of his head awkwardly. "Geez, I know that I can veer off topic every once and a while, but that's actually kind of a new low for me. Well, I guess I'll just tell him the next time we meet then."
