"Hey, Effie," Ananias greeted. He then took a moment to eye the humongous boulder atop of Effie's shoulders, cross his arms, and say, "It seems that you went back to lifting boulders over your head to train."
Effie let out a slightly embarrassed chuckle. "Yeah. No matter how hard I looked, I just couldn't find anyone strong enough to spot me, and I couldn't exactly stop doing these exercises, so I just thought, what the hey, I'll take my chances, you know?"
Ananias crossed his arms disapprovingly. "That still sounds completely unsafe," he then lowered his head and let out a relenting sigh, "but since there really is no one who can do it, I guess there's really no other choice."
"Right?" Effie said. "And hey, don't you worry about little old me. I've taken my fair share of bumps and bruises before. One more couldn't hurt."
"Well, that depends if all of those bumps and bruises have been in the face or against the back of that old noggin of yours," Ananias pointed out.
Effie nodded as best she could under the boulder's weight. "True, but considering how easily I can lift his, I doubt that it will lead up to that."
Ananias nodded. "Yeah. I guess I was just being paranoid for no good reason, huh?"
Effie shook her head. "Not at all. It was a totally legit concern. No one can fault you on having one of those."
Ananias sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. "I guess." He then began to make his way past her. "Well, I'll be leaving you to your training then. See you around."
Effie nodded. "Yeah, see ya." Unfortunately, it only took the moment for Ananias to take his eyes off of Effie for him to hear a loud crash and a loud, "Ouph!" from her.
Ananias turned around and immediately his eyes widened in both surprise and horror at what he saw: Effie, crushed under the very boulder she had been so easily lifting over her shoulders just mere seconds ago. "Effie!" he cried, running up to her and shaking her shoulder, making sure to see if she was still conscious or not. "Effie! Are you alright?!"
"Ugh," Effie groaned, her head stirring as her fingers slowly clawed against the ground. "Y-Yeah, I'm fine."
"What happened?!" Ananias incredulously and frantically asked.
Effie shook her head. "I don't know. One moment, everything was perfect, the next, my foot slipped and now, all of a sudden, I'm lying on the ground with a gigantic boulder lying on top of me."
"Don't move!" Ananias instructed, upon seeing Effie attempt to push herself back up. "You might've broken something!"
"I'm… fine," Effie said. "I just… need a moment to catch my breath, and this thing will be off of me in no time."
"No offense, but I'm not exactly willing to wait until 'no time'! We've got to find a way to get this thing off of you, like, right now!" Ananias frantically looked around and let out a frustrated grunt when he saw that nobody else was around to help. "Help!" he cried out, hoping that someone would possibly hear him and rush to their rescue. "Somebody! Anybody! We've got a possibly injured retainer here!"
"No one's coming, Ananias," Effie said. "If you want to get this thing off of me, then you're going to have to do it yourself."
"Do it myself?!" Ananias incredulously asked. "B-But… I can't! I'm…," he hung his head and clenched his fists, "not strong enough to lift it off of you."
"Then… push it off or something," Effie weakly suggested.
Ananias blinked in confusion for a bit. "Um… what?"
Effie sighed. "If you can't lift it off me, then just push it off of me, or get something to help you get some leverage on it so that I can crawl or roll myself out. There's more to getting boulders off of people than just being able to lift them, you know?"
Ananias was silent for a moment before punching himself repeatedly on his head and muttering, "Argh! That's right! Stupid, stupid, stupid!" He then immediately placed his hands against the boulder and said, "Alright, I'm going to push on three, okay? One… two… THREE!" He pushed the boulder as best as he could, but when it didn't seem to budge, he shook his head and, continuing to push with all of his might, said, "It's… not… budging!"
"Come on, Ananias!" Effie encouraged. "You can do it! Just a little bit more! Come on!"
"It's no use! I'm… I'm just not strong enough!"
"Yes, you are! Now put your back into it and remember why you're doing this!"
"W-Why I'm doing this?"
Effie nodded. "That's right! Why do you think I've gotten as strong as I have? It's because, despite how tired and sore I may get, I can always remind myself that I'm doing all of this for Elise! To be able to protect Lady Elise no matter what! That's what drives me to get stronger! Much stronger! Now tell me, why are you pushing this boulder right now?! Is it really to prove how strong you are, or is it something else? Well?"
"Why am I pushing this boulder?" Ananias murmured to himself. He took a moment to contemplate on Effie's words before gritting his teeth and crying, "I'm pushing this boulder because my friend is being crushed under it!" He then let out one last, loud grunt and, with a burst of strength, was able to successfully push the boulder just enough to let it roll off of the retainer that it had been lying under it.
As Ananias fell to the ground in utter exhaustion, Effie slowly lifted herself off of the ground and smacked her hand against Ananias' back, causing him to wonder if maybe BOTH of them now had potentially broken backs. "Ananias, you did it!" she proudly cried. "You got the boulder off of me! That was amazing!"
"I did it," Ananias panted. "I actually did it." He laid down on the ground. "I can't believe it."
Effie laughed. "Looks like you're plenty strong enough to help your friends after all, don't you think?"
Ananias nodded. "Yeah… I guess." He then looked at Effie and noticed that she was seemingly unaffected by the entire ordeal, both physically and emotionally. "But Effie… you look completely fine."
Realizing her mistake, Effie let out a surprised gasp before clutching her back tenderly and going, "Oh, well, I mean, yeah, it may look like it, but… ow, man, does my back hurt!"
Ananias' eyes widened in surprise. "Did you fake getting crushed by a boulder to make a point?!"
Effie chuckled awkwardly. "Um, yeah, I guess I did." She then tilted her head to the side and curiously and hopefully asked, "But did it work though?"
Ananias sighed, before looking up to the clouds, nodding, and answering, "Yeah, you've made your point."
Effie giggled. "Good."
