(A/N:Chapters are probably going to come later as I need to make decisions on where to take the story. Also, I want to clarify a few things real quick.
One, I'm aware I should use a hyphen in Spiderman but since we're 20 chapters in, I don't see the point in changing how it is now. Sorry for getting that wrong to begin with.
Second (And this is a separate thing from the first point), I appreciate CONSTRUCTIVE criticism but I'm not going to pay attention to vague criticisms with no specifics that seem only intent on insulting my story rather than giving me insights on what's specifically wrong with it [This applies even if you say something like 'No offense']. I'm also certainly not going to approve them being reviews when they come in from a guest who I can't even respond to to clarify what they mean.
If you don't like my story, you don't have to read it. It's that simple. Like I said, I'm not 100% in tune with Spectacular Spider-Man but I'm trying my best to keep all the characters as they were in the show and stay true to the history of the show. I'm not going to change the story to your liking as it's MY story, not anyone else's.
Sorry for the rambling. Just thought I'd get that off my chest. Anyway, I do not own Spiderman. That right belongs to Sony).
The ESU lab was quite different from last year from the viewpoint of Gwen Stacy. Last year, she worked for two kind bosses (Who were also husband and wife which Gwen kind of found adorable). She also had two of her bestest friends working there as well: Peter and Eddie. Eddie...was receiving help at Ravencroft institute to help him with this 'Venom' ordeal and Peter didn't need nor want to be here it seems. She couldn't really blame him but...it still would have helped if he was here with her. Even though she had reconciled with him and Mary-Jane, she still felt lonely most times.
At the moment, she was currently sweeping the floors while Dr. Warren and Debra Whitman were looking over lab reports at a desk nearby. Dr. Warren was different than Dr. Connors in many ways. He was very stoic at most times but he seemed pretty friendly to her at most times...maybe sometimes a bit too friendly. Like he would always look over her shoulder and tell her what a good job she was doing and sometimes nod in approval when he stared at her while she was working. It's not that the compliments weren't appreciated but...if he could tone it down a bit, that'd be wonderful.
However, given the blonde was the daughter of a single dad that had a mortgage, taxes and bills to pay, she needed all the scholarship money this internship could give her along with the possibility of a potential job as a lab assistant. She couldn't mess this up by doing anything to upset her possible future employer. The student loans that she would have to take out even with the potential scholarship money this internship offered were a pain enough as it is.
While Gwen was sweeping the floors, wiping up dust, she looked up and saw Warren looking at her with a bright smile on his face. She just flushed and immediately went back to what she was doing. She thanked god that Debra was here at least. She didn't really know if she could handle Warren alone.
After a few more minutes of sweeping, she heard the doors to the lab open. She looked up and smiled widely at the person entering in through the door. Dr. Warren and Whitman looked up and gave raised eyebrows.
"Mr. Parker...you're back" Warren said in a very monotone voice. He gave a slight glare to the boy who had a big grin on his face walking in.
While Warren didn't seem particularly happy about the return of one Peter Benjamin Parker, Gwen was ecstatic. She practically threw the broom on the floor and ran over to him, giving him a big hug, which he returned. Out of the corner of his eye, Peter could see a hint of jealousy in Warren's eyes.
"Alright, you two, no PDA during lab hours. Mr. Parker, while I'm surprised to see you here after all this time, it's good that you're here. The lab could always use an extra pair of hands. You have a lot of catching up to do if you hope to still receive a scholarship for the work this internship requires" Warren said, his voice getting more stern as he talked
"...Of course, sir...however, before I start...may I see you in your office? I wanted to discuss something with you...in private" Peter said to the Professor with a small smile on his face as he said this.
Warren raised an eyebrow at this. After a few moments of consideration, he simply nodded and gestured for Peter to follow him into the office.
Gwen had her own eyebrows raised at this. This was very unusual for Peter to ask something like this. He had never asked something like this from the Connors. However, with all that's happened recently, anything that could have been considered 'usual' didn't apply to her life much anymore. She picked up the broom and continued sweeping the floors while Debra went back to looking over the documents she was previously looking over before Peter walked in.
*Warren's Office*
"So, Mr. Parker...what does a big businessman like you want to discuss?" Warren asked as he sat down on his desk chair.
"Oh, I'd just thought I'd give an explanation as to why I've been missing work the past few months. I've...just been going through issues" Peter explained.
"Yes, I've heard from Ms. Stacy about your...recent habits. Rest assured, I hold no grudge against such things but note that we as scientists deal with extremely volatile and dangerous chemicals in this lab, Mr. Parker and if I hear any more word about you...indulging yourself, so to speak, you are fired...for good this time" Warren warned Peter.
"...Right. Well, rest assured yourself, Dr. Warren, I've given that up" Peter explained, nodding.
"Good. Is that all you wanted to speak about?" Warren asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Well...no. Not really. I also wanted to discuss another thing. Have you ever met a...Mark Allan, doctor?" Peter asked, raising his own eyebrow.
Warren momentarily froze and blinked twice. "I...suppose you mean the young man that managed to cover himself in fire and was arrested for trying to kill Spiderman? I believe the Daily Bugle called him 'Molten Man'. Unfortunate what happened to that boy but I haven't personally met him before"
"I see...It's kinda interesting what happened to him, don't you think? It must have been quite an experiment that managed to mutate his body like that. Do you have any idea of what it could have been" Peter asked the doctor.
Warren stayed silent before stating "I would have to study Mr. Allan more before I could make a determination on what was done to him. Maybe I could arrange the city to arrange frequent visits so I could determine the root cause"
Like hell Peter would allow that to happen. As far as Peter knew, Warren could have made a new contract with Tombstone now that the Green Goblin was gone for good and his rightful place as 'Big Man' was restored.
"Hm...From what I saw on the news, would you believe that maybe...microscopic nanobots that covered his body in armor and somehow managed to accelerate the mutated genes in his body that gave him his fire powers?" Peter asked, suddenly frowning.
Warren's heart had stopped at this and his subtlety was all but gone. He blinked rapidly.
"It...It could very well be. Are you...trying to imply something here, Mr. Parker?" Warren asked, suddenly giving him a slight glare.
Peter simply shrugged, acting indifferent when he's about to drop the bomb on him.
"Well….as you've probably heard, I've been named the new CEO and Chairman of Oscorp. Of course, this is all after I finish High School and probably College but as the upcoming head, I've been given access to all resources offered at Oscorp HQ, including documents Norman was working on before he...well, went insane. It describes a deal he had made with you, Dr. Warren...to conduct an experiment on Mark to clear his debts with the bookie Blackie Gaxton" Peter said bluntly, not feeling the need to dance towards the point any further.
"I..I don't...Peter...there...there has to be some mixup. I would never do such a thing-" Warren tried to explain before Peter cut him off.
"Save it. I know Osborn recommended you for this job. No doubt you were a replacement for Doc Ock after he went off the deep end and tried to kill Norman off. You continued Norman's experiments of creating super mercenaries like Sandman and Rhino for Spiderman" Peter said, starting to glare at Warren.
At that point, Warren then stopped trying to act all innocent and nervous. With a glare of his own, he stood immediately up and stepped towards Peter.
"...Listen, Parker, I don't know what you're trying to get from all this but let me tell you something. Whatever you think you found will never be taken seriously by the police. You're not even 18 yet and documents like that can easily be falsified. There's nothing else connecting me to Allan even if you get his testimony. The police will take it as a desperate attempt to get time off his prison sentence. So here's the deal: You're going to walk out of here with your tail between your legs and maybe I won't tell the University board about your atrocious work ethic and your accusing of me" Warren said, glaring down at the 17 year old brunette.
"So you're not denying you conducted an illegal human experiment on Mark?" Peter asked, not breaking his stride.
Warren just shrugged. "Humans make for better test subjects than animals on the kinds of experiments I practice...and believe it or not, I was doing the city and the world a favor. Spiderman is a nuisance to society and if Allan had eliminated him, the city would have been better off. Osborn was an insane sociopath, I realize that but his experiments were sound. They would have provided the country the super mercenaries it needed to ensure a secure nation. How we went about it is neither here nor there and if we would have had to off a gambling junkie like Allan, so be it. I have no regrets. You honestly should be thanking me for even trying to improve society as a whole"
Despite his smug words, Peter just smirked at this.
"You're right. Thank you, Dr. Warren...for ratting yourself out" Peter said, still smirking.
This caused Warren's confidence level to drop drastically as he frowned deeply.
"Wh-What?" Warren stuttered.
Peter raised his arm and pulled up his sleeve, revealing a sort of bugging device. He held it up to his mouth and asked "Did you get all of that?"
"We got it" A deep, male voice said on the other end.
At that moment, they both could hear the doors to the lab slam open. They both could hear Whitman let out a yelp. Warren looked to the door behind Peter. He practically shoved the boy out of the way and quickly opened the door out of the office and into the main lab area.
At that moment, he could see several police officers, including captain George Stacy and the Chairman of the University board.
"D-d-dad?! What are you doing here?" Gwen sputtered out.
"Don't worry, Gwen. This doesn't concern you" George said to his daughter, nodding towards her
"H-h-how...what…" Warren stuttered, suddenly getting afraid, an emotion he didn't usually experience.
George Stacy walked towards him and glared down at him.
"Miles Warren, you're under arrest for the illegal human experimentation of Mark Allan. With the documentation and the recording of your confession that you just blurted out, we have more than enough evidence to take you in. Cuff him" George said to Officers DeWolff and Sergeant Carter.
"Yes, Captain. Hands behind your back now. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you in court" DeWolff said as she and Carter proceeded to arrest Warren.
"N-n-no. Y-y-you don't understand! M-Mr. Chairman, please, I was only trying to-" Warren said to the University Board Chairman as he was placed in handcuffs. However, the scientist was cut off.
"Save it, Warren. I made the biggest mistake of my life here at this University trusting you. When word gets out about this, it's going to shatter our reputation. I'll personally see to it you'll never work in any University ever again" The Chairman said as he glared deepy at Warren.
"You can't do this to me! I'm a top scientist! Do you know how much money in grants I brought to this school?! If I go, this lab will be dead!" Warren said. However, his voice faded away as he was dragged away by both DeWolff and Carter outside the lab.
As other officers went to Whitman to question her about her possible knowledge of these experiments, George walked towards Peter.
"Thanks for the tip, Peter. Now we know what happened that night we arrested Mark. I always did hate having to bring him in. Despite his actions, he seemed like a nice kid. Little did I know the true culprit was my daughter's boss" George said, shaking his head.
"I...I can't believe it. I knew there was something off about Dr. Warren but I always felt he was a nice guy...if not a little creepy" Gwen said, rubbing her arms.
"Well it seems you can't trust anyone in this city, especially those on high" George said as he put her arm around his daughter.
"Captain, would it be possible to release Mark after this?" Peter asked hopefully.
"I'm not sure, Peter. Despite all this, he did try to kill Spiderman and that's something we can't just let go" George explained regretfully.
"Well...what if he was given probation? After all, he was set up by Oscorp and I think if word gets out about this, Spiderman might be willing to...drop the charges" Peter said, smiling knowingly at George.
George stared at Peter for a moment before giving a little smirk of his own.
"Hm...I'll speak to Mayor Waters and the DA about this. After this, they might be willing to give some leniency to the boy. Thanks again, Peter. I'll see you at the next criminology session. Gwen, I'll see you at home" George said, kissing his daughter's cheek.
As the both of them saw Captain Stacy leave the lab, Gwen suddenly realized something.
"Wait...what's going to happen now that Dr. Warren's been arrested?" Gwen asked, turning towards the University Board chairman.
"Well...Warren was right about one thing. He did bring the University several thousands of dollars in grants and funds for the lab to keep going. Without him and the fact that he has just been exposed as a criminal, I don't think we'll have the funds to keep this lab going...it looks like we may have to shut it down" The board chairman said.
"Damn it!" Gwen said, stomping her foot in disappointment. What was she supposed to do now? She was counting on this internship to get her through college. Now she was going to have to go through it deep in debt.
Peter, noticing Gwen's distress, turned towards the Chairman.
"How much money did Warren bring into the school?" Peter asked, raising an eyebrow.
"About $500,000 a year. Why?" The board chairman asked, raising an eyebrow of his own.
"What if I give you double of what he brought in?" Peter asked.
Gwen turned towards Peter with a look of shock and disbelief on her face.
"Wha...Peter, you can't be serious? A million dollars of your inheritance? That's insane!" Gwen exclaimed.
"It may be but this lab has done some good work and all of that work would be lost if it was shut down. What if I give you the money and you can recall the Connors back to their original posts?" Peter asked the chairman who rubbed his chin in response.
"Well...I mean...I suppose I could convince the rest of the board to agree with those terms...yes...alright. You got a deal. Cut the check to the University and the Connors can return" The chairman said with a smile.
Peter nodded and the both of them shook hands. A deal well met this turned out to be.
Afterwards, the chairman gave his goodbye and walked out of the lab as well, leaving Peter, Gwen and Debra who was still being questioned by the police.
"I...I still can't comprehend what just happened" Gwen said, blinking rapidly.
Peter shrugged. "Hey, it's New York"
Gwen just giggled at this. "Well...you did a good thing today, Peter. I'm proud of you...also...with the Connors seeming to be coming back...do you think you'll maybe...I don't know"
"Come back?" Peter asked, amusingly with a raised eyebrow.
"Well...yeah" Gwen replied, blushing and smiling an embarrassed smile.
Peter just chuckled and nodded. "Yeah...I think I will"
Gwen practically yelped with joy and tackled Peter into a big hug, almost knocking him down. The police and Whitman both turned and gave them weird looks.
When Gwen finally realized what she was doing, she backed off Peter and brushed herself off.
"Uh...sorry" She said, blushing madly now, super embarrassed.
Peter shoved it off. "No big deal. Anyway, I gotta meet Liz and Felicia down at the Silver Spoon for a little date. They're going to be super ticked if I miss this"
"Oh, uh...sure. Yeah. Cool. I...guess I'll be heading home soon. After all, the police are probably going to be pretty busy here" Gwen said, observing the police questioning Debra.
"That's cool. I'll see you around, Gwen" Peter said before giving her one last hug and walking out the doors to the lab.
Gwen just stared at the door. Hard to believe that just an hour ago, Warren was a well respected scientist. Now he was criminally charged with experimenting on her friend's girlfriend's brother. Only in New York it seems, as Peter said.
The blonde packed up her things and walked out of the lab. For the first time in a while, it seemed things were starting to look up.
