"Humph," Odin grumbled.
"Humph," Ananias pettishly returned.
An awkward and stubborn silence came between the two before Odin begrudgingly muttered, "You too, huh?"
Ananias nodded as he continued to do anything in his power to avoid looking at him. "Yep."
"... I've never seen Lord Leo so disappointed in me before."
Ananias nodded. "Yeah. This has been the first time that Lady Elise has ever been really mad at me. It sucks."
Odin sighed. "Tell me about it."
Another awkward silence came between the two before Ananias shrugged and said, "Well, for what it's worth, Lady Elise was also kind of impressed with me."
Odin's eyes widened in surprise as he couldn't help but turn to look at him. "Wha - she was impressed!? How?!"
Ananias simply shrugged and answered, "She didn't think I had it in me."
"Well, of course she didn't! No one did!" Odin then defensively folded his arms and muttered, "Neither did I, but... here we are."
Ananias nodded. "Causing so much of a ruckus telling everyone each others' secrets and letting it get so out of hand that it ended with us being locked into a room together - "
"With the only way of earning our freedom being to call a truce or reach an understanding with one another and promise to leave our petty squabbles behind us," Odin finished. The two of them let out an exasperated sigh before Odin asked, "What happened to us, man? I mean," he turned forward and slumped down in his seat, "you used to be the only guy who I felt like I could be myself and not feel like a complete idiot around, and now here you are," Odin waved his hand, "making fun of me for it worse than anyone who's ever tried before. What changed?"
Ananias pondered over the question a bit before muttering, "I grew up. And you... you just," he shrugged uncertainly, "started a second life." He turned his head to look at Odin. "You were still acting like a kid, even though you had adult responsibilities, and it irked me, you know? Somehow you were going around making stupid and immature decisions and, for some reason, you were just getting away with it. You were a sword user for most of our lives and now you've switched to using just magic and everything's just... fine." Ananias slumped further down into his seat. "I... I guess I really was just jealous of you. You and your calling. You and your second life. You and your... success at a completely different life in a completely different world." Ananias took a deep breath as he took a moment to keep himself from crying. "I'm sorry." He bowed his head. "I was wrong. I shouldn't have went so far just to prove a point."
Odin's eyes widened as he stared at Ananias in shock for a while before bowing and shaking his head. "Yeah, well, maybe it was a good point," he softly admitted. "I mean, look at me. I kept telling you that I was here to do something serious and important, but how could you believe me when I don't even take myself seriously?" He ran his hand sadly through his hair. "I'm a joke."
"No, come on," Ananias gently said. "Don't say that. You're not a joke. You're the furthest thing from one!"
"How?!"
"By acting like a joke but still getting good results out of it! Could you imagine what more you could do if you didn't act the way you did? Maybe things would be even better than they are now!"
"And that's supposed to make me feel better... how?!"
"By reminding you about what's really important! That everything here is fine! I mean, yeah, sure, some things could be better, but most of those things are out of your control, whether you were acting like a joke or not! When it comes down to the things you do have an influence on... they're perfectly fine, and in the grand scheme of things, that's okay! Or at least it's better than someone taking everything seriously and still messing up half the time!"
Odin's face softened as he then only felt pity for one of his oldest friends. "Ananias..."
"I mean," Ananias ran both of his hands through his hair in frustration, "you'd think that after the one hundredth screwup, things would finally start to click, you know?" His arms then flopped down as he stared into the distance and sighed. "But they haven't. I'm still making all of these stupid mistakes, even though I try so hard not to make them. And unlike everyone else, my mistakes just seem to never really work out for anyone. Especially me."
Odin sadly chuckled. "Aw, come on now. Don't YOU start."
Ananias dejectedly shrugged. "Where's the lie though?"
"Sure, maybe you do still make some pretty unacceptable mistakes when it comes to doing things, what with you overcomplicating even the simplest of tasks, but that just shows how much you care! You care so much about doing things right, exactly how somebody wants it, no matter how strange or how weird the orders and instructions might be, that you just end up second guessing yourself, even when you got it right the first time!"
"Yeah, and that's annoying," Ananias matter-of-factly replied.
"Sure, maybe a little! But it's also kind of nice, you know? Knowing that you have a friend who'll put so much effort into doing something exactly the way you want it for you? A guy can really learn to appreciate that, even if there are a few growing pains and screw ups along the way."
Ananias couldn't help but grin at this. "Humph. The way we're talking to each other, you'd think we somehow made up, huh?"
Odin's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, we still haven't?! But I thought - "
"You thought that I was just going to let your newfound sloppiness with a sword go?" Ananias shook his head. "Nah, man. I'm still pretty adamant about that."
"B-But my persona!" Odin whined.
"No buts about it," Ananias firmly rebuffed. "We gotta do something about your swordsmanship, otherwise I'm not going to be able to sleep well at night."
"Aww."
Ananias let out an exasperated sigh. "Look, we can take your 'Odin Dark' character into consideration, but, one way or another, we're going to work on your swordsmanship, alright? Seriously, I shouldn't be able to beat you, man. That's like, some really worrying stuff."
"I guess," Odin reluctantly conceded. "But it's going to be really hard to call myself a master of the dark arts if I'm spotted half-decently swinging a sword around."
"Geez, man. I'm not asking you to choose one or the other."
"I know! I know! But the two roles... they just require two completely different mindset, you know?"
Ananias raised an eyebrow incredulously. "... Seriously?"
"Hey, you don't know Odin and Owain's inner pain! You don't know how painstakingly nuanced the two of them are!"
Ananias glared at him solemnly. "Look man, if you can't figure out a way to get back into training with a sword again, then I'm just going to have to tell everyone that I'M the one giving you lessons, and we both know how embarrassing that's going to sound, don't we?"
Odin gulped nervously. "Ha ha, yeah, that... that would be embarrassing. Like, SUPER embarrassing."
Ananias rolled his eyes. "Tell me about it. Now," he held out his hand," do we have a deal?"
Odin smiled and shook Ananias' hand. "Yeah, deal." He then stretched out his arms and asked, "Special Justice Cabal hug?"
Ananias chuckled and nodded. "Sure, special Justice Cabal hug."
