A Chick Senses Spring

I peeped out of the nest in the hollow.

Ma said I shouldn't. Dada said the Secret Po-lice would get me. He said last night they were hunting for Adams and Eees, and he'd tell me to get back under Ma while he went out to help.

But Ma and Dada were sleeping. They didn't know. They didn't know about the air! Their feathers did. Their feathers were fluffing up. But they weren't awake. And I had to see!

White. The world was still white, not green, like Ma said it used to be, long long ago. But there was a new sound! Plip. Plip. A new sound!

I shivered, 'cause the snow fell on my head and it was still cold. I ran back to Ma, ducking under her wings and snuggling in. Maybe, in the warmer air, I could dream of the world being green.
