Harry had been sitting at his lab table watching Cordelia and Emmett out of the corner of his eye. He was suspicious at first that the vampire was going to do something to his sister, but when Harry saw that Cordelia was beginning to relax around Emmett, his worry calmed a little. Harry tried to listen to their conversation, but his lab partner kept talking to him, and he didn't want to be rude to her. So, after making sure that Cordelia was okay and that she wasn't going to freak out about being so close to a vampire, Harry turned and started talking to his lab partner, Jessica Stanley.
When class ended, Cordelia and Emmett gathered their books, put them in their bags, and walked towards the door. Emmett smiled down at his beautiful mate, "Well, I guess I'll see you later."
"I suppose so."
The was a pause as they walked down the hall, "Um, Cordelia, could I walk you to your next class?"
Harry walked up to Cordelia and Emmett, "That's not necessary; my sister and I know where it is." Harry said, then ushered Cordelia out of the classroom.
Emmett glared in the direction that Harry and Cordelia had gone and growled. Jasper came up behind Emmett, "What happened?"
"Harry cock blocked me from walking Cordelia to her gym class."
"Can you blame him, Emmett? They don't know us, and they don't trust us."
"Yeah, but I think Cordelia likes me now."
"That may be true, Emmett, but that doesn't mean she trusts you. Something happened to them that causes them to be hyper-alert suspicious of everyone. Kind of like they've been through a war."
"Are you sure," Emmett asked.
"Yes, they have all the signs of PTSD. If you look into their eyes, they have a haunted look, a soldier's look."
Emmett's heart ached just thinking that something horrible happened to his mate and he wasn't there to prevent it. His job was to care for and protect her no matter what, and Emmett felt like a failure.
"Don't do that to yourself, Em; you didn't know her at the time."
"I know, but I still feel bad."
"Well, you know her now, and you now have an opportunity to protect her."
Emmett sighed, "Yeah, you're right. Come on, let's get to our next class."
While this was going on, Harry and Cordelia were walking to the gymnasium, "So, what were you and the big guy talking about?"
"He was asking me questions about Hogwarts. He was trying to get to know me."
"And?"
"And I was as vague as possible, but I did discover that his family moves around a lot. It makes sense; they can only pass for teenagers for so long without people getting suspicious. He told me that Carlisle and Esme adopted him and that Jasper had an older sister named Rosalie that graduated the year before. It was strange; Emmett wanted me to know that he and Rosalie had dated, but nothing was going on between them now. He was very adamant that I know that."
Harry's brow furrowed, "That is strange. What else did you discover?"
"Well, he's very kind and funny, a bit childish, but he has a good heart. I'm beginning to think that the Cullens are not like the vampires that sided with Voldemort."
"Perhaps not, but we still need to keep an eye on them and not drop our guard. Remember what Moody said."
"Constant Vigilance!" The god siblings said at the same time and laughed.
The rest of the day went by quickly, and finally, it was time to go home. Harry and Cordelia went to their lockers and got their books for homework, then headed towards the parking lot. They saw that the Cullens and Bella were standing around talking. Emmett and Alice waved at Harry and Cordelia, and the god siblings awkwardly waved back.
Alice waved them over, but Cordelia shook her head and yelled that they needed to get home. Alice frowned and nodded. Harry and Cordelia quickly got in the car and sped out of the parking lot. The Cullens and Bella looked at each other, confused.
"They don't like us, do they?" Alice wondered.
"It's not that, Darlin'. They're suspicious of us and are wary."
"Do you think they know what you are," Bella asked.
"I don't know," Jasper said.
"I wish I could read their minds, but every time I try, I'm blocked," Edward said.
"What do you mean you're blocked?"
"Well, with Bella, I don't hear anything; it's only silence. But with them, it's a block, and if I push harder, Something throws me out of their minds. Sometimes violently."
Everyone's eyes widen at this new information, "We need to discuss this with Carlisle. Maybe he's heard of this before."
Everyone pile into the Volvo while Emmett got into his Jeep and followed his family home. When they arrived, They found Esme in her study, going over some plans to renovate a Seattle house. Rosalie had left and had gone to Isle Esme for a year. She wanted some time away from the family, well, from Bella. The human had been getting on her nerves, and she needed some peace.
Edward and Emmett walked into Esme's office and asked her if she knew where Carlisle was, "He's covering at the hospital today. One of the doctors called in sick. But he should be home in a few hours. Why, what's going on?"
"Well, remember when we told you about the two new students that started yesterday? Some things about them are odd, and we thought that maybe Carlisle has come across something like this before," Alice said.
Esme nodded, "Well, why don't you all go hunting in the meantime. And Edward can help Bella with her homework."
The Cullens nodded and headed out. They return a few hours later when Esme called Emmett to tell him that Carlisle had arrived. They enter the house, and Carlisle is sitting in the living room talking to Esme. He stood up with his children came into the house, "Esme told me that you all had noticed some strange things about the new students. Is that right?"
"Yeah, we thought that maybe you'd seen it before."
"Perhaps, what have you seen?"
"Edward can't read their thoughts," Alice said.
"But it's not the same as Bella. It's like a wall around their minds, and if I try to push harder to get in, I get shoved out. Sometimes painfully."
"What else?"
"They're warier of us than the other students. They're on guard around us all the time. As if they know what we are, They are hyper-alert of their surroundings and seem to be suffering from PTSD," Jasper said.
"I can't see their futures. I barely got a glimpse of Cordelia being Emmett's mate."
"And then there was that thing at lunch," Emmett said.
"What happened at lunch."
"One minute I could hear them talking then suddenly, I started hearing a buzzing noise. I couldn't even listen to Harry and Cordelia's heartbeats. It was like they disappeared, but they were sitting right there. Then as quickly as it appeared, it disappeared."
"Don't forget the hand twitching," Edward said.
"Oh, yeah! Sometimes, Harry or Cordelia's hand twitch like they're reaching for something. A weapon of some sort."
"Hmm, that's very interesting. I'll have to do a little research and get back to you. In the meantime, could you not push your presence on Cordelia and Harry? If they want to talk to you, they will. I know that's going to be hard for you, Emmett, but it's for the best. Cordelia and Harry need to feel comfortable around us so that you can pursue anything with her."
Emmett smiled, "I think she feels a little more comfortable with me now. We have chemistry together, and Cordelia is my lab partner. We talked a while, and she seemed to relax a bit the more we talked. But Harry wasn't too happy about it. He ushered her away from me as soon as class was over."
"But after school, they went straight home without talking to anyone," Alice added.
Carlisle had a thoughtful look on his face. Could they be what he thought they were? If they were, what were they doing in Washington?
"What do you think they are," Edward asked.
"As I said, I'd do some research and get back to you."
They accepted Carlisle's answer and went about their business. Edward took Bella home so that she could have dinner with her father.
Meanwhile, at the Black mansion, Cordelia and Harry got home and sat in the car for a little while, "Should we tell Sirius and Remus about the Cullens," Harry asked.
"We have no choice now. Moony is going to smell Emmett on me since he was sitting so close to me. And we don't want them to overreact before we can explain. Especially Moony," Cordelia explained.
Harry nodded, "Okay, let's get this over with."
The god siblings get out of the car and head inside; Fispey greeted Cordelia and Harry, "Welcome home, Mistress and Master."
"Hello, Fispey, do you know where my father and Remus are," Cordelia asked.
"The masters be in the study watching the television," Fispey informed her.
"Thank you, Fispey. Could you bring us something to eat and tea, please?"
"Of course, Mistress."
Cordelia and Harry walked into the living room and saw that Remus and Sirius were watching the History Channel. Sirius looked bored out of his mind, but Remus was sitting on the edge of his seat as he watched a show on WWII. Remus paused his show when he heard Cordelia and Harry walk into the living room. Both men turned and smiled at the kids.
Remus smiled, "Hey, guys. How was your day," He asked.
Remus's face fell when he saw the serious look on their faces, "Did something happen at school," Remus asked. Then he stiffened when he caught the scent on Cordelia's clothes.
"What's that smell?"
"Oh, you can smell it."
Sirius turned and looked at Remus, confused, "What smell?"
"You can't smell it, Padfoot? It smells almost like-"
Remus didn't finish his sentence when he realized what the scent was, "No."
"Um, we may have a problem," Harry said.
"What," Sirius asked.
"It turns out that there are vampires at the high school," Cordelia said.
"What?!" Sirius exclaimed and shot to his feet, "Did they hurt you?"
"No, but they do seem to be a little bit too interested in us," Harry said.
A low growl started building in Remus's chest, "I'll kill them."
Cordelia and Harry looked at each other, "I don't think that's necessary, Moony. They seem to be interested in us, but I don't think it has anything to do with our blood," Cordelia said.
"Why do you say that, Cord," Sirius asked.
"They have amber eyes, and from what I read in my book about Creatures of North America, that means these vampires only feed on animals."
"That still doesn't mean they're not attracted to your blood," Remus said.
"That's true, but it does mean they do have more control. Especially since they are going to school with a bunch of Muggles, and one of them has a Muggle girlfriend," Harry said.
"You're joking."
"No, and I'm pretty sure she knows they're vampires. If she doesn't, she's an idiot," Cordelia said.
"Okay, so we'll have to be on our guard when it comes to these vampires. If they give you any indication that they're a threat, let us know, and we'll take care of them." Remus said.
Cordelia and Harry nod. They have their snack and tea then head upstairs to do their homework.
