A/N: Oh my goodness where the heck have I been! Life, as it so often does, gave me a few twists and turns these last couple months and then lately I have just been so unmotivated to write so I am so so very sorry for the delay on this chapter and sincerely hope some of you are willing to forgive me and keep reading anyways lol! Seriously, big apologies for the delay, and I am going to try my best to not take so long to write next time.
Of course, because of that this chapter is a little all over the place! I started writing it basically as soon as the last chapter was posted and only finished it basically an hour before it was posted versus how I normally write sort of all at once or within a week, so it for sure is very all over the place but I'm just trying to find my footing with this fic again so please be patient with me (although you already have been!)
Other than that I sincerely hope you enjoy this chapter! I've got a few small announcements on the second A/N at the bottom per usual, and also per usual any feedback is so so so SO appreciated to A) let me know which parts you like as it helps me focus on them and B) I do really love to see who's still reading! That said, please do enjoy, and get excited for regionals which will be the next chapter (!)
TUESDAY MORNING
The Porter house was never quiet, and this morning was absolutely no different.
"Stop fucking looking at me," Heather hit her brother with a spatula.
"I'm not looking at you, I'm looking at your roots," Felix reached over to mess Heather's hair up.
"Come on guys," Alistair sighed out deeply, "It's 7 AM,"
"Congrats dad, you can tell time," Felix snickered.
"That's more than you can do," Heather raised her eyebrows at Felix.
"Nice one kiddo," Spencer smirked, walking into the kitchen, ruffling Heather's hair, "But watch where you're waving that thing," he grabbed the spatula out of her hand.
"You always take her side," Felix groaned.
"And Alistair always takes your side," Spencer pointed out, "That's why we're so functional,"
"I think we have different definitions of functional, Dad," Heather rolled her eyes.
"Hey, we're pretty functional," Alistair spoke mid-yawn.
"Means a lot coming from the drug dealer," Heather smirked.
"As if that's not your dream job," Felix pointed out.
"My dream job is being jobless actually, thank you very much," Heather now reached for a whisk to wave at her brother.
"Hey speaking of jobless," Spencer suddenly remembered the news he'd recently heard, "Have you guys heard from Roderick recently? Or Emery?"
"We haven't in the past like, five years, why would we start now?" Heather asked skeptically.
"Just curious," Spencer shrugged.
"So why not ask about literally any of the other kids we hang out with?" Heather, per usual, tested her father and everybody else in the room.
"Because you never shut the hell up about Mia so we always know what the McCarthy's are up to," Felix snickered.
"Interesting coming from the idiot who's head is so far up Zoey's ass that he can't see the light of day," Heather shot back, "At least Mia and I are actually dating,"
"And you've just proved our point," Alistar laughed, "We know what's going on with the kids you hang out with,"
"Now get the hell out of here, you're gonna be late," Spencer began shooing his kids out the door, "And try to have a good day,"
"I make no promises," Heather smirked, "Shotgun!" she suddenly called out, dropping the whisk
"Well, I'm driving, so, sure," Felix shrugged, letting the door close behind him as they made their way out.
NEW DIRECTIONS
"Woah, is it just me or does it feel like it's been forever since we've been in this room?" Lex laughed, looking around the choir room.
"It does feel like it's been… a while," Savannah nodded before turning to her boyfriend, "How are you feeling? After you know, your big fall?"
"I'm feeling a lot better, especially thanks to you taking such good care of me," Finley cooed.
"I'm just surprised your parents were so… cool with it all?" Flora couldn't help but laugh as she entered the room.
"Yeah that party was wild," Sophie agreed, "Mostly in a God-honoring way, but of course, I don't know what most of you were up to,"
"Our parents weren't cool with it," Hazel raised her eyebrows, laughing, "The opposite, actually. I think we're all grounded until we graduate,"
"That's not too long now for you though, is it?" Felix smiled, nudging Simon.
"Yeah, it's coming up… much quicker than I realized," Simon sighed out.
"I hear that. Early acceptances are coming out in the next few weeks," Kyla nodded.
"Where'd you apply to?" Rey asked curiously.
"Oh, I uh," Kyla began but was unsurprisingly cut off by Felix calling out.
"There he is! The man of the hour!" Felix laughed loudly.
"Did we not all agree to… not talk about the party?" Oscar sighed out, Bryce close behind him.
"Yeah what happened in the Jones' backyard… stays in the Jones' backyard," Bryce nodded in solidarity.
"Agreed," All of the teens in the room spoke in unison, making Mr. Schue feel spooked as he slowly walked in.
"Woah, what's gotten into you guys?" He laughed, "Don't get me wrong, it's great 'cause I love to see you guys getting along but it is… unexpected,"
"We're trauma bonded," Sophie smiled, nodding eccentrically.
"What?" Will only became more confused, but didn't have a chance to finish his thoughts as Rowan appeared in the doorway, seemingly a friend along with them.
"Hi friends! You've all met Grey, right?" Rowan grinned.
"Uh, maybe?" Lex tried, not wanting to be rude.
"Hell yeah, I have!" Felix grinned, "I didn't see you at the pa- I mean, intimate get together?"
"I was there," Grey assured him.
"Either way," Will spoke slowly, putting the pieces together, "Welcome to New Directions, Grey,"
"Wait, just like that?" Savannah raised her eyebrows, "No audition or anything?"
"I think it's fine," Bryce shrugged, "I didn't audition either,"
"Yeah, but we thought we lost Rowan when you joined, Bryce," Finley explained with a shrug.
"Lost me? I was sick," Rowan tried to interject, but was cut off by their glee teacher.
"Alright, how about this," Mr. Schue started slowly, "Originally, I was going to suggest this week we do song options for regionals,"
"Are the lists out?" Simon asked.
"Not yet, but," Mr. Schue paused for dramatic effect, sticking a single finger in the air, "It could be good to throw some ideas around because the lists are meant to come out this week. So, this is a great chance for Grey and Bryce to both audition if they want,"
"Nice!" Bryce grinned.
"And then," Will continued, admittedly, ignoring the outburst, "The rest of you are free to come up and do any sort of suggestion you have for regionals,"
"And we're supposed to do that without knowing what the themes are?" Savannah quirked a skeptical eyebrow.
"I just want to get a feel for the kinds of songs you guys want to do," Mr. Schue tried, though he was quickly getting tired of constantly feeling like he was being tested by his students.
"That's a first," Kyla rolled her eyes.
"Alright guys, that's enough," Will put his hands up, "I'm not sure why you're all acting like this but in this room, we're supposed to respect each other. I do my best to respect you and what you want, all I ask is that you do the same for me,"
Unfortunately for Will, he was cut off by the bell as he found he usually was. While normally he would have said something to the at the end of the meeting, he simply did not have it in him today as he watched the kids slowly but surely trailing out of the classroom.
"Hey," Kyla nudged Oscar as she came up behind him,
"Jesus," Oscar jumped at the voice, "Don't scare me like that,"
"Why? Are you afraid I'm the cops? Coming to get you for your car crime?" Kyla teased.
"Don't joke about that," Oscar shook his head, sighing out.
"Alright, alright, I'm sorry," Kyla smirked, "But I uh, I just wanted to see if you wanted to do a song with me this week?"
"Really?" Oscar was surprised, but pleasantly so, "I mean… yeah. Sure,"
"Cool, I can't wait," Kyla smiled, leaning to place a small kiss on Oscar's cheek, causing both of their faces to flush as they began going their separate ways.
THE TROUBLETONES
"Yo, what the hell?" Heather looked around the room, "Where did you all come from?"
"Yo," Delia rolled her eyes, "I'm not sure what you mean. By my calculations there are only two more people than usual?"
"By my calculations," Tia mocked Delia's voice, "You're a big nerd,"
"Alright girls, that's enough," Marley intervened, "We want to make a good impression on the newest additions to the Troubletones," she smiled towards Isa and then Sanna-Rose who sat awkwardly next to Audrey and Naomi respectively.
"I think that ship has sailed," Juliet rolled her eyes.
"Nobody asked you, Juliet," Naomi snapped.
"Woah, new additions? Without auditions?" Heather gasped, ignoring the other two girls.
"Heather, are you ever gonna let that die?" Audrey sighed out shaking her head.
"Would you rather me start trying to recruit for my band again? Cause I can do that if you'd rather," Heather smirked.
"Band?" Sanna-Rose questioned.
"Don't get her started," Mia sighed out deeply.
"Are we not going to talk about the elephant in the room?" Nikki suddenly asked, "And by elephant I of course mean backstabber who none of us trust,"
"Please don't talk about your sister that way," Marley sighed out, defeated.
"And Nikki, you were a part of that whole situation too," Cay pointed out.
"Who's side are you on?" Nikki frowned.
"Look, I know it's weird that I'm here but," Leah started but was cut off.
"That's the understatement of the year," Zoey rolled her eyes.
"But I really want to be here. And I thought we could all try to let bygones be bygones," Leah sighed out.
"I'm so confused," Isa spoke, shaking her head slightly.
"I'm sorry, but Marley?" Trina suddenly spoke up, "This is all just… a lot. New members? That's great and I know half of the people here didn't audition but… it does feel odd that now that we clearly have enough members… none of them are auditioning,"
"I concur," Heather stated simply.
"I'm glad you mentioned that, actually," Marley smiled gently, "I was thinking that, well, we could of course have the new girls audition. And part of Leah's terms to coming back were to re-audition. And then everyone else who didn't audition can have a chance to,"
"Does… that include us?" Naomi spoke exchanging a glance with Delia.
"No, you were in New Directions before this, so that's fine. I'm referring girls who are new to glee this year," Marley responded with a small nod, "So that would of course be, Sanna-Rose, Isa, Juliet, Zoey, Nikki, Heather, and then, like I mentioned before, Leah too."
"Woah, woah, woah, I did not agree to this," Zoey scrunched her nose up.
"I've gotta agree with Satan's mistress over here," Heather nodded, "Kind of fucked up,"
"Honestly… yeah. The weirdos have a point," Nikki nodded, "It's not like you haven't seen us perform before,"
"Come on girls, that's not the kind of initiative I want to see from you," Marley tried to hype them up, "Who wants to go first? You know set an example for our new friends?"
"I'll go," Leah surprised the group by standing up, "The song I picked is um, well, I don't know just sort of something I can relate to, I guess?"
"Sounds great honey," Marley smiled, moving to take a seat with the rest of the Troubletones, "Whenever you're ready,"
Taking a deep breath Leah looked at all of the girls in the room who she had somehow either managed to betray or lose the trust of. Letting her music start, she shook her head and began singing.
"So I've been doing a good job of makin' 'em think
I'm quite alright, better hope I don't blink
You see it's easy when I'm stomping on a beat
But no one sees me when I crawl back underneath,"
She sang out, gently swaying to the music clearly relating to the words, shaking her head as she opened her eyes to see Sanna-Rose innocently also sort of swaying to the music, while Leah ignored the daggers that Nikki and Naomi both seemed to be looking at her with.
"If I smile with my teeth
Bet you believe me
If I smile with my teeth
I think I believe me,"
Breathing out heavily once more, Leah once again looked at her fellow Troubletones and was surprised to see that a handful of them were either bopping along or giving her pity smiles, and was even more surprised that as she started the chorus, Audrey, Mia, Cay, and Sanna-Rose were all harmonizing along with her, as even Heather, Tia and Isa bopped their heads along to the music.
"Oh please, just don't ask me how I've been
Don't make me play pretend
Oh no, oh no, oh what's the use?
Oh please, I bet everybody here is fake happy too,"
Wrapping up the song Leah gave a small, ironically, somewhat fake smile, though was just as ironically, somewhat genuinely happy at the not totally negative response.
"Oh please, I bet everybody here is fake happy too," She concluded with a small nod, and even smaller smile appearing on her lips at the scattered applause.
"Well done, Leah. And I'm very proud of you for going first," Marley smiled, just as the bell rang, "Alright everyone, thanks so much. And please think about what songs you'd like to do for your auditions!"
"So, Zoey," Heather started, chasing her acquaintance at best down the hallway, "What song are you thinking of doing for your little audition?"
"Leave me alone, Porter," Zoey rolled her eyes.
"Come on, I need some inspiration!" Heather practically begged.
"For the last time, leave me alone!" Zoey suddenly snapped. She was never super kind to Heather, but this seemed different.
"Woah, jeez, are you okay?" Heather suddenly asked, surprising Zoey by her genuine concern.
"It's just… home stuff," Zoey took her turn in surprising Heather by her voice softening, "You wouldn't understand,"
THE WARBLERS
"Good morning gentlemen!" Sutton, per usual, threw his arms in the air as he entered the room, making his presence known immediately.
"Good morning gentleman!" Tommy grinned right back.
"What's on the agenda for today, my lovely councilmen?" Sutton grinned cheekily.
"As I'm sure you're aware," Teddy began slowly, "We always wait for all of our members to show up before diving into the meetings."
"Yeah, but I mean, come on," Sutton made his way behind the desk to nudge Teddy, "We both know you're looking for some charming gentlemen such as myself to take over for Mack and Tommy next year. And we also both know one of them will be me,"
"We know absolutely no such thing," Teddy raised his eyebrows, "Besides, the vote for council doesn't happen until after regionals. You're more than a few weeks early."
"Exactly!" Sutton pointed a finger up in the air, "Never too early to begin campaigning!"
"That's the spirit!" Mack grinned happily.
"Yeah!" Eric pumped a fist in the air as he Addison, and Michael walked into the room, "What's the spirit, by the way?"
"I'm so glad you asked, friend!" Sutton beamed, "Hi, I'm Sutton Puckerman," he reached out to shake their hands.
"We know who you are, buddy," Addison laughed, but shook his hand anyways.
"Great! Then you should know I'm running to be a councilman next year," Sutton grinned proudly.
"Oh, that'll be good," Oliver snickered, not looking up from his phone.
"What'll be good?" Zach questioned, Frank, and Bob both trailing behind him.
"Sutton's running to be a part of the council next year," Michael spoke dryly, "Apparently,"
"And why exactly are you running for council?" Ambrose couldn't help but question, curiosity piqued.
"Because I'm fun and I love the Warblers and you're my only real competition," Sutton smirked, "So it'll be a cake walk,"
"There is going to be two spots on the council," Mack spoke up, but was not surprised when nobody had paid him any attention.
"What if I wanted to run?" Frank suddenly questioned. They didn't want to run, but also was curious.
"Yeah!" Bob piped up, "Or me!"
"Or me!" Zach repeated with a firm nod.
"Zach, honey," Trent laughed as he made his way into the room, "You're graduating. Besides, we shouldn't get too ahead of ourselves. We need to focus on regionals and then deal with whatever might happen next year much later,"
"That is exactly what I've been trying to say, thank you Trent," Teddy offered Trent a small polite smile and nod, "Which is why we need to start considering songs for regionals. While there are themes once again, we likely won't know what they are until the end of the week. However, it's never a bad idea to sort of… get started on some ideas,"
"So what? We just goof off and then hope something comes to us?" Oliver finally pulled his eyes away from his phone long enough to pay attention.
"Isn't that what we always do? It's worked so far," Eric spoke up with a small laugh.
"Well, it's not goofing off, exactly," Teddy sighed out, "But you're free to come sing any song you think could be worth a shot, and by all means we encourage it. Hopefully it will fit one of the themes and if not, it can maybe give us an idea for something else,"
"Can we do a song we've already tried in glee?" Sutton raised his eyebrows.
"Yes, I think so!" Mack nodded.
"Unless it's Blue," Teddy let out a deep, deep sigh.
"Why do you take so much joy in seeing me suffer?" Sutton matched Teddy's deep sigh just as the bell rang.
"Alright, think of some songs and we'll see you all this afternoon!" Trent called out as the boys began to file out.
"Hey," Eric pulled Addison gently to the side, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Addison forced a laugh, "Why?"
"Because I'm your boyfriend and I can see that something's off," Eric offered a small, sympathetic smile, "You don't have to tell me or anything but… I'm here for you. Always," He reached to grab Addison's hand, giving it a small squeeze.
"Thanks Eric," Addison smiled, nodding, "I just uh, you know my mom's boyfriend? We uh, figured out who it is and things are just… becoming very serious between them very quickly. Zoey's weirdly taking it worse than I am but it's still… a lot,"
"I can only imagine," Eric nodded before looking up at Addison, "So… who is it?"
VOCAL ADRENALINE
"And then this is the auditorium," Jude spoke as he walked in, Pilar close behind him.
"Wow, it's actually… really big," Pilar nodded, smiling.
"It's alright," Jude shrugged, "But I'm sure Sophie will be happy to know you've decided to join glee,"
"Even though we're on competing teams?" Pilar raised her eyebrows.
"Don't speak of it," Xavier was now the third to enter the room, dramatically placing the back of his hand on his forehead.
"Huh?" Pilar furrowed her eyebrows.
"Trina's boyfriend," Jude responded lazily, taking his seat.
"And Jude's best friend in the whole world!" Xavier grinned widely.
"That's not true," Emery raised her eyebrows, as she and Isaac walked in, "Jude doesn't have any friends,"
"True, and you'd know better than anyone," Isaac snickered, never missing a chance to join in on some light, friendly, mildly chaotic conversation.
"Oh good, you've got Isaac in on it?" Jude raised his eyebrows.
"He's not in on anything," Emery smirked, "But it was funny,"
"Who's not in on anything? And what was funny?" Kate questioned nervously.
"Emery was spreading lies!" Xavier gasped, in absolute shock. "Saying Jude doesn't have any friends!"
"Damn," Chloe shook her head as she lazily made her way in, "That is hilarious,"
"What's hilarious?" Steven questioned, not realizing a similar question had been asked just seconds ago.
"And who the hell are you?" Sydney narrowed their eyes at Pilar.
"I'm Pilar and I'm new to Vocal Adrenaline!" She responded, a little too happily for Sydney's taste.
"What? Did I miss an audition?" Anthony gasped just as dramatically as Xavier had previously, "No fair! I love judging people. And I'm so good at it,"
"Wait, auditions?" Leslie asked, "Isn't it a little late in the year for auditions? No offense," she turned to face Pilar, "I'm sure you're lovely but… it just seems strange,"
"Why?" Kendall walked in behind Leslie, eyes never leaving her phone, "That weird Ingrid girl joined without an audition. No one batted an eye,"
"I can hear you, you know," Ingrid raised her eyebrows, sighing out deeply.
"What are we hearing?" Sawyer asked curiously.
"Ears! Yay!" Dana threw their hands up in the air just moments before waving them around like they just didn't care.
"Our new friend here," Kate gestured to Pilar, embarrassed that she didn't think to ask for her name, not remembering her from the party, "is going to audition,"
"Could never be me," Ingrid snickered.
"Think again," Harmony practically shouted from the back of the auditorium.
"Huh?" Multiple heads turned to look.
"That's right," Unique smiled, "We've unfortunately had some… complaints that Ingrid didn't audition. And now with Pilar eager to join as well, both girls will be auditioning this week,"
"What about the rest of us?" Kendall suddenly asked, "What are we meant to do?"
"Well, consider this another chance to audition, to really show us what you've got, if you feel up to it," Unique spoke calmly.
"Or take this chance to harshly judge the other performers. Either way, I don't care," Harmony spoke looking over the group, "But make sure you're here every meeting this week,"
"As opposed to every other week?" Jude raised a skeptical eyebrow.
"You wouldn't know," Sydney rolled her eyes, of course, referring to all the meetings Jude had missed.
"This week," Unique spoke up before that interaction could go any further, "We are expecting to hear about who we will be competing against at regionals,"
"And of course, the themes as well," Harmony nodded decidedly, "But until we get that list there's no point in trying to prepare for the competition. So just put your best foot forward, especially those of you who won't inevitably end up swaying in the back,"
"So we really… don't have to do anything this week?" Chloe verified.
"Other than show up, technically no, Chloe. You don't have to do anything," Harmony sighed out, already exhausted with her daughter.
"But please, like we mentioned, if you feel like performing a song," Unique started before being interrupted.
"And being harshly critiqued," Harmony reminded the kids.
"Then please," Unique fought to grab hold of the room's attention once more, "feel free to perform for us."
As she concluded the bell rang, Ingrid and Pilar both exchanged a somewhat nervous glance as everyone else figured this was to be expected from Harmony.
TUESDAY AFTERNOON, NEW DIRECTIONS
"Hey!" Felix called out, "Zoey!"
"What?" Zoey sneered.
"I just… wanted to make sure you're okay?" Felix shrugged.
"My life is none of your business," Zoey snapped back.
"Okay, so clearly, you're going through something and Heather thought the same thing and I won't push but… I'm here okay?" Felix tried.
"For the last time. Stay out of my business. You think you know what I'm all about, but you don't. Just do me a favor and leave me alone," Zoey sneered, turning to walk away, leaving Felix to wonder what was going on and what to do next as he wandered into his own glee club, noticing that everyone else was already there.
"Nice of you to join us, Felix," Mr. Schue nodded.
"I'm not even late!" Felix huffed out.
"As I was saying before Felix came in," Mr. Schue brought his attention back to the kids already sat in the choir room, "I believe we had two auditions to get through this afternoon,"
"Ooh, can I go first?" Bryce raised his hand excitedly.
"Oh, good," Oscar raised his eyebrows.
"Floor's yours, Bryce," Mr. Schue smiled, nodding.
"Yeah! Go get 'em, Bryce!" Lex called out happily in support of his teammate.
"Alright, so, do I just… go ahead?" Bryce asked.
"Yes," Savannah responded dryly, surprised that he hadn't got the idea of it despite being in the group for several weeks.
However, without needing much more persuasion, Bryce cleared his throat, suddenly calling out with a surprising amount of enthusiasm.
"Shot through the heart
And you're to blame
Darling, you give love a bad name,"
"Yes Brycey!" Sophie called out happily for her teammate, as the band picked up and Bryce truly began singing.
"An angel's smile is what you sell
You promise me heaven, then put me through hell,"
Bryce's voice was clearly made for classic rock music, as his demeanor also matched it perfectly, something his glee club picked up on as he carried on singing.
"Chains of love got a hold on me
When passion's a prison, you can't break free,"
"He's actually really good," Rey noted, unsure of what she was expecting.
"Good for him," Simon agreed, smiling and nodding.
"Oh, oh, you're a loaded gun
Oh, oh, there's nowhere to run
No one can save me
The damage is done,"
Bryce paused for dramatic effect, earning a loud, "yeah!" from Felix across the room.
"Shot through the heart
And you're to blame
You give love a bad name
I play my part
And you play your game
You give love a bad name,"
As he began to wrap the song up, Bryce continued to sing out just as enthusiastically and passionately as he had done previously, surprised to see that his glee club had joined in on singing with him.
"Shot through the heart
And you're to blame
You give love a bad name
I play my part
And you play your game
You give love a bad name,"
Ending in a dramatic pose, with a fist raised high in the air, the room echoed with applause for their friend.
"Wow, really great job, Bryce," Mr. Schue clapped, laughing as he was pleasantly surprised by the performance, "Now, Grey? Did you have time to prepare something,"
"I mean," Grey spoke somewhat awkwardly as he shrugged, "I guess?"
"You got this, buddy!" Rowan smiled widely, somewhat nervous as they were, of course, the person who convinced Grey to join.
"Yeah! You got this!" Finley also called out, barely knowing who Grey was, but seeing that he was friends with Rowan, so that was enough for him.
"Whenever you're ready," Mr. Schue smiled kindly despite Grey truly looking like he really did not want to be there.
As the music began playing, a few of the kids in glee recognized the song immediately, as shown by a few stifled laughs and dropped jaws, one of which belonging to Kyla who simply muttered, "No way,"
"Well, when you go
Don't ever think I'll make you try to stay
And maybe when you get back
I'll be off to find another way,"
Grey began, while his voice was somewhat shaky, everyone sort of assumed it was just due to the nerves, and in fairness, most were so surprised that he had chosen this particular song to make a first impression with that they hadn't really noticed the shakiness.
"And after all this time that you still owe
You're still a good-for-nothing, I don't know
So take your gloves and get out
Better get out while you can
When you go, and would you even turn to say
I don't love you like I did yesterday?"
"You know," Sophie whispered to Flora, "This song is a little heavy… but he's not bad,"
"I was just thinking the exact same thing," Flora laughed nodding.
They were right, though. Whether it was his confidence building or him just not caring (the group couldn't tell) it worked as he was able to hold more strong and powerful notes as he continued.
"When you go, would you have the guts to say
I don't love you like I loved you yesterday?"
As Grey once again impressed the group by calling out long and loud, a slight edge and almost growliness to his voice, he also impressed himself, surprised that all those years of singing along to MCR in his bedroom had finally paid off.
"Your friend is… really good," Hazel laughed, nudging Rowan, "Did you know he was this good?"
"Of course I did, why do you think I asked him to join?" Rowan lied outright to their sister.
"I don't love you like I loved you yesterday
I don't love you like I loved you yesterday,"
Grey finished out, once again belting out for the majority of the end and was surprised to see that he'd gotten almost as much applause as Bryce.
"Woah, sweet pipes," Lex grinned.
"Seriously, super well done," Mr. Schue laughed, "And of course, welcome to New Directions, Grey,"
As the meeting continued on with the kids going back and forth over whether or not it was better to prepare for Regionals now or later when they knew what the themes would be, it did eventually become time for it to end. As the students all began filing out, Grey was surprised to be stopped by someone, and was even more to see that it wasn't Rowan who stopped him.
"Uh, hi?" Grey spoke, suddenly nervous to be perceived.
"Hi, sorry to uh, you know, come up to you unprovoked and everything," Oscar stumbled through his thoughts, "But I just wanted to welcome you to glee and to let you know that, I, you know, I thought your song was pretty cool,"
"Really?" Grey scoffed, ready to gatekeep the hell out of the music he liked, "You like MCR?"
"MCR?" Oscar asked, confused, "I mean, I don't know? I don't really… know much music with lyrics? Other than what I've learned in glee, and what I've been shown. But I liked the sound of whatever you were just singing,"
"Oh," Grey suddenly changed his tune, "Well, uh, I could show you more if you want? There's tons more bands like that,"
"Really?" Oscar's eyes went wide, "Yeah, that would be cool,"
"Yeah, uh, don't mention it," Grey nodded.
"Hey, it was cool to meet you I'm uh, I'm Oscar, by the way," Oscar smiled, as the exited the classroom, happy to have made a new friend.
THE TROUBLETONES
"No way," Tia gasped at the information given to her by Zoey, "Like Roderick, Roderick?"
"Do you know another one?" Zoey rolled her eyes groaning.
"Does… Addison know?" Mia asked curiously. "What about Emery?"
"Addison knows… it's like weirdly brought us together?" Zoey sighed out, "I don't know or care about Emery,"
"Well, you should," Tia snickered, "You're going to be step-siblings before you know it,"
"Who's going to be step-siblings?" Heather asked, joining her friends and Zoey in the room, them being the first four to arrive for glee.
"Zoey and Emery. Madison's mystery man is apparently Roderick," Tia snickered.
"Wow, so much for keeping it on the down low," Zoey rolled her eyes, "Seriously don't tell anyone else. It's embarrassing,"
"I feel like it's probably more embarrassing for the Meeks," Heather snickered.
"Seriously, shut the hell up," Zoey warned, "And don't tell your annoying ass brother. I just had to deal with him in the hallway and he's seriously pissing me off,"
"Who's pissing you off?" Cay questioned curiously as she and Nikki walked into the room hand in hand.
"Don't ask," Tia warned.
"Touchy subject?" Nikki smirked.
"If it's a touchy subject, let's maybe not bring it up?" Audrey tried, only catching the tail end of the conversation as she and Isa entered.
"Yeah, I second that," Leah nodded, "We've had… enough drama, I think,"
"Bold of you to say," Delia noted, earning a snicker from Naomi as they took their seats next to each other, Sanna-Rose not too far behind.
"Did I… miss something?" Trina asked, her and Juliet being the last two to enter the room other than Marley.
"I've been here for less than a day and have felt like I've been missing something this whole time," Isa shrugged, "If that helps at all,"
"It doesn't," Juliet rolled her eyes.
"Alright, ladies," Marley walked in before anyone had a chance to react to Juliet's bad attitude, "Does anyone want to volunteer to do their audition this afternoon?"
"I'll go," A somewhat small but confident voice spoke up, all eyes turning to look at Sanna-Rose.
"Wow, way to step up," Naomi grinned, proudly.
Naomi was the main reason Sanna-Rose had decided to join the Troubletones. Sanma-Rose's mom knew Sam fairly well, and once Naomi figured out just exactly who she was, she of course made way to recruit. In all fairness too, Sanna's mom also told her it would be good to join a club or two and meet some new people, and Naomi seemed more than happy to take her under her wing. It also was a good hobby to focus on since she always loved to sing.
"That's great, Sanna-Rose! Why not go ahead and tell us a bit about yourself?" Marley smiled kindly.
"Well," She surprised the group by speaking so confidently, as they all had just sort of assumed she was more of the quiet type, "My name is Sanna-Rose Morgan. I'm 17, turning 18. I'm a grad this year, I'm learning to play the guitar right now, so that's cool, I guess? I recently moved to Lima, but my mom used to live here so, uh, yeah," She concluded with a happy laugh.
"That's great! Whenever you're ready, go ahead and sing whatever song you've got ready," Marley smiled.
As her music started, Sanna-Rose cleared her throat, a sudden determined look on her face as she began.
"Falling too fast to prepare for this
Tripping in the world could be dangerous
Everybody circling is vulturous
Negative, nepotist,"
"Holy crap," Cay let out a small half laugh at the rapping Sanna-Rose had started to show off.
"Everybody waiting for the fall of man
Everybody praying for the end of times
Everybody hoping they could be the one
I was born to run, I was born for this,"
"Did you know she was… good at this?" Delia looked to Naomi who shook her head with wide eyes.
"No idea," Naomi laughed, happy about this new discovery though, both girls exchanging a look, knowing this was obviously something they could use in the future.
"Whip, whip
Run me like a racehorse
Pull me like a ripcord
Break me down and build me up
I wanna be the slip, slip
Word upon your lip, lip
Letter that you rip, rip
Break me down and build me up,"
Sanna-Rose slowed down slightly, her voice confident and strong as she allowed herself to move to the music slightly, as she started the chorus.
"Hell yeah!" Heather called out.
"Whatever it takes
Cause I love the adrenaline in my veins
I do whatever it takes
Cause I love how it feels when I break the chains
Whatever it takes
Yeah take me to the top I'm ready for
Whatever it takes,"
As the other girls in the group cheered her on, Sanna-Rose finished up her song confidently, proud of herself for doing so well.
"Cause I love the adrenaline in my veins
I do what it takes,"
Concluding with a hand on her hip, the room applauded loudly, all excited about the clear talent that Sanna-Rose held.
"That was… incredible!" Marley laughed, "Seriously, wow. Thnak you so much!"
"Thank you," Sanna-Rose laughed, "I'm glad you guys liked it,"
"That was dope as hell," Nikki nodded, "Seriously,"
"Alright," Marley clapped her hands together, "Did anyone else want to have a go?"
After a long moment of silence, it was, surprisingly, Zoey, who broke it, "I do,"
"Are you sure?" Tia raised her eyebrows, "I know it's been a weird day for you,"
"God, I'm so sick of everyone getting in my life," Zoey groaned, "Which is actually what the song I wanted to sing reflects, I think,"
"Well, then," Marley started slowly, "Go ahead, Zoey,"
As the music started, Zoey started along with it, her voice dangerously calm as she sang out the first part.
"You think you know me
But you don't know me
You think you own me
But you can't control me,
You look at me
And there's just one thing that you see,"
Her voice was beautiful, and the level of control she had in it was something the girls hadn't really seen from her yet. Every eye was deadest on her, which was something she noticed, and weirdly didn't enjoy for once.
"So listen to me," Her voice started to raise just slightly moments before she belted out, "Listen to me,"
"You push me back
I'll push you back
Harder, harder
You scream at me
I'll scream at you
Louder, l-l-l-l-louder,"
While Juliet and Isa both felt somewhat intimidated, Tia and Mia both called out in support of Zoey as she sang out confidently. Her voice was strong and held up as she began finishing the song out.
"I'm dangerous, I'm warning you
But you're not afraid of me
And I can't convince you
And I don't have to
I think you know me,"
As she finished it was clear Zoey was going through some sort of emotion, though everyone was a bit afraid to ask about it.
"Wow, Zoey, I don't know that I've ever seen such… passion from you," Marley noted, "Seriously, very impressive,"
"Good job, Zoey!" Trina smiled, clapping once more, genuinely impressed by her performance.
"I don't need your approval," Zoey snapped back at the compliment.
"I wasn't trying to…" Trina tried to interject but was interjected by Zoey.
"I don't need any of your approval! God, I'm sick of this," Zoey suddenly called out, storming out of the classroom.
"I'll um, go check on her," Tia decided on, getting up to leave and follow Zoey out.
"Does anyone know what's going on with her?" Marley asked suddenly, "I just… want to make sure she's okay,"
"Well," Heather started slowly, despite knowing Zoey asked her not to tell anyone, "You know how her mom's been dating someone?"
THE WARBLERS
"Vote Sutton!" Sutton grinned passing stickers in the hallway before the glee meeting started, "Vote Sut- oh, hey Ambrose,"
"What exactly are you doing?" Ambrose quirked an eyebrow.
"Campaigning, obviously," Sutton laughed.
"To people who aren't in the Warblers? And won't even have a say in the vote?" Ambrose tried to clarify, "When did you have time to make those stickers anyways?"
"Hey, no publicity is bad publicity," Sutton raised his eyebrows as the two boys turned a corner on their way to the meeting, "And I have my ways. And by ways I of course mean an older brother who will do just about anything for my allowance and an excuse to not go to class,"
"Oh good, you've got Oliver in on it too," Ambrose couldn't help but roll his eyes.
"You know what?" Sutton sighed out, stepping in front of Ambrose directly before they walked into glee, "I think you think you may lose the vote and you're nervous. And while I do find it admirable, I also think that us having a little competition is very hot and so for that reason alone I'm going to continue being this way,"
"You are… so irritating," Ambrose thought out loud but couldn't help but laugh.
"And yet you like me anyways," Sutton grinned, nudging him slightly before they finally walked into the meeting, "What'd we miss, lads?"
"Well," Teddy began slowly, "Not much. But we did have a couple of our underclassmen getting ready to perform a song,"
"While we do understand that it's a little ways away before the council is picked," Eric spoke slowly, "And some of us may have to wait longer to actually get on it, we thought we'd still throw our hat in the ring and sort of show what we've got," he finished, nodding to Bob and Michael beside him, the two other aforementioned underclassmen.
"And we can't wait to see it!" Tommy grinned, nodding decisively.
"So true, bestie," Mack nodded in agreement, "So boys, whenever you're ready!"
"We uh, brought an instrument? I hope that's okay," Eric cleared his throat before nodding to Bob who began to strum away on his ukulele.
"I was scared of dentists and the dark
I was scared of pretty girls and starting conversations
Oh, all my friends are turning green
You're the magician's assistant in their dream,"
Michael sang out, his voice deep, soulful, and beautifully matched against the gentle ukulele strings, many of the other Warblers already swaying in place, or jumping in to create even more of the background music and harmonies.
"Oh, oh, and they come unstuck," Bob sang out pleasantly just before all three boys sang out the chorus in a three part harmony.
"Lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left-hand man
I love you when you're singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat 'cause
You're gonna sing the words wrong,"
The rest of the club continued to help back the boys up but all calmed down slightly as they came to the bridge just as Eric sang on his own.
"I just wanna, I just wanna know
If you're gonna, if you're gonna stay
I just gotta, I just gotta know
I can't have it, I can't have it any other way,"
While his voice was much more gentle than Michael's, the subtlety of it paid off, leaving Eric with a proud look on his face as he concluded.
"I swear she's destined for the screen," Bob now took over, his voice a perfect in between of Michael and Eric's, tying the whole performance together "Closest thing to Michelle Pfeiffer that you've ever seen, oh,"
Now the whole room swaying in sync, the three boys smiled to each other, happy to see the song doing so well as the three sang the main melody together and in harmony once more.
"Oh lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left-hand man
I love you when you're singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat 'cause
You're gonna sing the words wrong,"
Several of the other Warblers also sang along, they once more quieted to let the three boys who started the song finish it out together.
"And I got a lump in my throat 'cause
You're gonna sing the words wrong,"
The boys of course, cheered and applauded for their peers, leaving Eric, Bob and Michael with a sense of accomplishment.
"Yeah! Way to go Bob!" Frank cheered out, "Eric and Michael too, but you, know, Bob's my brother,"
"That was most impressive, boys," Teddy nodded, "Whether or not it's right for regionals… I'm not sure. But great job,"
"Did anybody else," Trent started slowly, "Have a song they wanted to show for regionals?"
"I actually did!" Mack grinned, jumping out of his chair as though this song was something he suddenly remembered.
"Way to step up, Mack," Teddy nodded.
"So, I know we still don't know what exactly the themes are, but I think this song could be worth a shot!" Mack grinned.
"Go bestie! Go bestie!" Tommy called from behind the desk.
All eyes on Mack, he cleared his throat for a short moment before beginning to sing.
"You would not believe your eyes-"
"We're not doing fireflies," Teddy cut Mack off immediately, realizing he probably should have asked Mack if that was his song before he'd even gotten up, "Alright unless anybody else has one… please take the rest of the afternoon to brainstorm,"
"That doesn't look very much like brainstorming to me," Zach snickered, surprising Oliver, "What's got your attention on your phone and not on the glee club you're, I think, being blackmailed to be a part of?"
"I'm not being blackmailed to do anything," Oliver rolled his eyes, "Besides, how do you know I'm not like, Googling songs or something?"
"Because I can see that you're on iMessage," Zach laughed, "So who are they?"
"Who is who?" Oliver quirked an eyebrow, feigning ignorance.
"That you're texting? And have been texting all day?" Zach chuckled once more, "I know it's not my business, but I've been there, dude. When Kate and I first started talking I was constantly on my phone texting her but trying to keep it on the low, so I know all the signs"
"You're right. It's none of your business," Oliver sighed out, though he did realize Zach seemed like an okay dude, and would likely be the best person to talk to this about, "Can you keep a secret?"
VOCAL ADRENALINE
"Good afternoon, friends, colleagues, fellow glee club superstars!" Xavier called out dramatically as he entered the empty auditorium.
"Who's going to tell him that he's the first person here?" Jude snickered, nudging Emery as they walked in together.
"I think it's gonna have to be me, you already broke his heart once by not being in love with him," Emery snickered right back, only earning them another, but this time bigger nudge from Jude, despite the both of them laughing together.
"Get a room," Anthony rolled his eyes.
"You're just bitter because your stinky little girlfriend goes to another school," Sydney pointed out.
"Stinky?" Steven questioned.
"Girlfriend?" Kate asked as she followed the crowd in, surprised there was any member of Vocal Adrenaline she did not know like the back of her hand.
"You didn't hear?" Kendall smirked, "Anthony finally bagged the Schuester,"
"Weird way to phrase that," Isaac noted, "Even weirder that you're dating her, but good for you I guess,"
"Isn't dating the enemy… kind of a bad idea?" Pilar suddenly spoke up.
"Hard disagree. You're supposed to sleep with the enemy," Ingrid nodded knowingly.
"Then it's a good thing literally everyone in here is dating someone from a different group," Chloe snickered.
"You're all dating people?" Sawyer questioned with wide eyes.
"I think she meant," Leslie shook her head, sighing out, as she and Dana were the last two to walk in, "Those of the people in here who are in a relationship all have partners who go to different schools,"
"Except for Jude and Emery, which is how we got here and started talking in circles like we always do," Sydney rolled their eyes.
"What?! You can't do this to me!" Xavier turned gasping at his friends, "Not again!"
"We're not dating," Emery quickly spoke, wanting to move on from the subject.
"This has nothing to do with you," Jude sighed pointing to Xavier before turning to face Emery, "And you didn't have to sound so happy about it,"
"For once I agree with Mr. Hart," Harmony called as she walked in, "This is not a place for being happy,"
"It's… glee," Kate let out a small, confused laugh.
"The word literally means happiness," Ingrid added on.
"Well I get brought happiness by hard work and dedication which is what we should all be here for," Anthony spoke up, "Show choir is serious business and so I think we all need to be serious about this. Harmony is doing a fantastic job by trying to get us to do that,"
"Ass kisser," Chloe mumbled.
"Alright, that is enough," Unique finally spoke up, "Both Pilar and Ingrid will be auditioning for us today. Which of you would like to go first?"
"I will!" Pilar raised her hand.
"Alright, go on," Harmony gestured for the student to get on the stage.
Pilar was, of course, incredibly nervous. She was more of a dancer than a singer but did enjoy both and knew that the best way to make a good impression was to show up and be confident and do a great job with the song she had prepared – a song she'd been singing for as long as she could remember.
Clearing her throat as she made her way to the stage, Pilar gave a friendly smile to the band behind her, before speaking up, "So, well, hello," she laughed, her slight Colombian accent coming through, "This song is one of my favorites, and I'm very excited to perform it,"
As a slow rhythm began to play, Pilar immediately allowed herself to move front and center, forgetting where she was for a moment as she let the music take over.
"Give me somebody to dance for,
Give me somebody to show
Let me wake up in the morning to find
I have somewhere exciting to go,"
Her voice was strong and almost kind as she continued on.
"To have something that I can believe in
To have something to be
Use me
Choose me,"
"She's great," Kate grinned, already happy to see the newest member proving her talent.
"She's amazing!" Sawyer agreed happily.
"Give me somebody to dance with
Give me a place to fit in
Help me return to the world of the living
By showing me how to begin,"
Allowing herself to move along to the still slow music, the audience was impressed by how perfectly in sync she was the rhythm and how in tune she seemed to be with her own movements just as the song began to pick up.
"Play me the music
Give me the chance to come through
All I ever needed was the music and the mirror
And the chance to dance,"
Pilar's voice going into a slight belt, Leslie cheered out in support, Dana following her lead, and Steven following Dana's lead, earning him a less than friendly glare from Sydney.
As there was a pause in the music, Pilar showed off that she could truly move, and was easily one of if not the best dancer Vocal Adrenaline had seen on that stage.
"Dang," Isaac shook his head in disbelief just as Pilar started to sing again.
"Play me the music
Play me the music
Play me the music
Give me the chance to come through
All I ever needed was the music and the mirror
And the chance to dance,"
Ending with her arms up in the air as she once again allowed her voice to go into a belt, she smiled, breathing out just slightly heavily as majority of the audience cheered loudly for her.
"Wow," Harmony shook her head in disbelief, "That was… shockingly passable. Alright. Ingrid, you're next,"
"Good luck topping that," Sydney snickered as Ingrid passed her to walk onto the stage.
"I could do it in my sleep," Ingrid spoke, her voice threateningly sweet, only loud enough for Sydney to hear, leaving Sydney shocked and confused.
Making her way to thee stage, Ingrid stood tall and proud, a kind smile on her face, "As you all know by now my name is Ingrid. Much like Pilar, this is one of my favorite songs… it's just a little more… me,"
As the music began, she began swaying in place, looking almost alarmingly professional and comfortable.
"Tastes like strawberries
On a summer evenin'
And it sounds just like a song
I want more berries
And that summer feelin'
It's so wonderful and warm,"
While they'd heard Ingrid sing before in a group number, this was the first time the group had really heard her and they were a mix between impressed and threatened. While she moved seamlessly along to the music, her voice was strong and comfortable, only further showing what she could do as she went into a higher range.
"Breathe me in, breathe me out
I don't know if I could ever go without
I'm just thinking out loud
I don't know if I could ever go without,"
"Holy crap," Anthony murmured, unsure of how exactly to take that someone other than Sydney might actually be able, with practice, to match his vocal capabilities.
"Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar,"
Noticing the reaction of her peers, Ingrid truly milked it, waltzing around the stage, singing out the words flirtatiously as her strong vocals never once waivered.
"I just wanna taste it, I just wanna taste it
Watermelon sugar high
I just wanna taste it, I just wanna taste it
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar,"
Ingrid concluded with a strong belt, smirking and placing her hand on her hip as there was scattered applause, several wide eyes and even a loud 'yee haw' from Dana.
"Also… surprisingly passable," Harmony noted, "Alright, come on, everybody on the stage,"
"Why?" Jude lifted a skeptical eyebrow.
"Because we're in glee practice?" Kendall responded, confused, though she was barely paying attention.
"And we're going to work on your dancing before regionals. It's our weak spot," Unique tried to explain.
"No, it's only the weak spot of some of you," Anthony corrected, "I'm perfect,"
"Shut up, Anthony," half of the group groaned out as they all reluctantly got up on the stage.
While the dancing did leave something to be desired, Harmony eventually decided to call it a day, all of the students sporadically began leaving, Emery surprised to find that they were being stopped by Kate.
"Can I help you?" Emery raised her eyebrows, "You're not drunk again, are you?"
"What?" Kate's face flushed, "No, no, I, well," she paused, "I just wanted to reach out to you,"
"Why?" Emery questioned skeptically.
"Well, I heard through Eric about your dad dating Madison and I know that's probably a huge adjustment for you, so I just wanted to let you know I'm here if you ever want to talk," Kate nodded, smiling kindly.
Kate was surprised though, to see the color leave from Emery's face, their eyes going wide as they finally spat out the only words they could think of, "What the hell are you talking about?"
THURSDAY MORNING, NEW DIRECTIONS
"Hey! I've been looking for you," Bryce sighed out.
"Clearly not very hard," Juliet raised her eyebrows, "What do you want, Bryce?"
"To say hi? And that I'm sorry if I was too forward or something? I dunno," He shrugged.
"Look, I'm busy," Juliet rolled her eyes, "And I can not stress enough that I am not interested,"
"You don't even want to be friends?" Bryce raised his eyebrows.
"I already have friends," Juliet sneered.
"You have Oscar," Bryce pointed out, "And I love him to death but that's one person,"
"Mind your own business," Juliet suddenly snapped, "I don't have time for this. I have to go audition for my glee club, which is absolutely ridiculous,"
"Hey, I auditioned for my club on Tuesday," Bryce laughed, "See? We have so much in common!"
"Goodbye, Bryce," Juliet rolled her eyes once more, walking into the Troubletones room.
"Better luck next time, buddy," Oscar stepped next to Bryce as they entered their own choir room together.
"Thanks, uh hey, no offense, but what's up with the outfit?" Bryce suddenly looked Oscar up and down, noticing the all black look, complete with ripped skinny jeans, converse and oversized black hoodie.
"I'm dressing how I feel. That new kid, Grey? He introduced me to new music, and they're just like… saying all the things I don't know how to," Oscar nodded.
"I never would have pinned you as an emo kid," Felix laughed as he overheard the conversation, "But whatever makes you happy, Oscar,"
"I kind of like the new look," Kyla smirked.
"You… do?" Oscar suddenly blushed as she took a seat next to him.
"Ugh, get a room," Savannah rolled her eyes, as she and Finley walked in hand in hand.
"Bold of you to say," Rowan snickered, as they walked in with Grey.
"Nice outfit, Oscar," Grey smirked proudly.
"I didn't realize you two were friends," Kyla laughed, looking to Grey and then Oscar.
"Who's friends?" Hazel asked, Rey and Simon right behind her.
"We're all friends! We're in the glee club!" Lex grinned happily, taking a seat next to Savannah.
"Besties for the resties," Sophie nodded in agreement, she and Flora walking arm in arm as they plopped themselves down next to Rey.
"Alright guys," Mr. Schue clapped his hands as he entered the room, "The competition lists for regionals are getting emailed to us this afternoon, which means we've got to bring the energy up,"
"Is the energy normally down?" Finley laughed, feeling as though it was a fair question to ask.
"Well, no, it's not that, just that you know, I want you guys to get fired up!" Mr. Schue tried.
"I gotta agree with Finley, Mr. Schue. I feel like we usually are?" Simon spoke, his tone very evidently confused.
"You know what, never mind," Will sighed out, defeated, "We don't have that much time this morning anyways. With the limited time we do have did anyone want to sing something?"
"We actually had something?" Kyla gestured to herself and Oscar.
"Well, then, by means, have at 'er," Mr. Schue smiled moving out of the way letting the two take the center of the classroom.
Without much further warning, a guitar began playing behind them, as Kyla started singing.
"When the world gets too heavy
Put it on my back
I'll be your levy
You are taking me apart
Like bad glue
On a get well card,"
Her voice was soft and subtle, but very genuine as she stole a few glances over at Oscar, smiling as she caught him glancing back.
"Aw," Rey cooed, noticing this.
"They're cute aren't they?" Hazel nodded in agreement, a smile on her face as she and Rey exchanged a glance and then a small blush.
As the song continued, Kyla and Oscar sang together, their voices meshing perfectly, eyes never once straying from one another as they sang in complete and perfect harmony.
"It was always you
Falling for me
Now there's always time
Calling for me
I'm the light blinking at the end of the road
Blink back to let me know,"
Taking a small step towards Kyla, Oscar sang out on his own now, his voice as soft as Kyla's was, the blush on his cheeks only becoming more and more prominent as he sang.
"That I'm skin and bone
Just a king and a rusty throne
Oh, the castle's under siege
But the sign outside says, 'Leave me alone'"
As the music paused for just a moment, the tension between Kyla and Oscar was palpable, as they simply stood looking at each other as if they were the only two in the room.
"Zoo wee mama," Sophie shook her head, "That chemistry pops off,"
Not noticing Sophie speak, Kyla and Oscar continued singing, their voices just as beautifully matched as they were previously, though somehow now with even more passion.
"It was always you
Falling for me
Now there's always time
Calling for me
I'm the light blinking at the end of the road
Blink back to let me know
Blink back to let me know,"
Just as they had finished, the bell rang, and while Will did tell them they did a good job, it seemed they, along with the other members of the club, couldn't get out of there fast enough.
"Hey," Oscar pulled Kyla to the side of the hallway, just as they had stepped out, "Can I um, talk to you about something?"
"You can talk to me about anything," Kyla smiled sincerely.
"I uh… well," Oscar cleared his throat, "Wanted to ask if you would um.. well…" He stuttered through his words, surprised when Kyla cute him off.
"Yes," She spoke, still smiling.
"You didn't even know what I was going to ask you," Oscar quirked an eyebrow.
"Well, I'm assuming you were going to ask to, you know, make us… official," Kyla spoke slowly, suddenly second guessing herself.
"Oh," Oscar thought out loud, "Maybe you did know what I was going to ask,"
As the two walked off together, both smiling, Grey couldn't help but have a question come to mind.
"What's the deal with those two?" He asked Rowan.
"Didn't you extreme makeover Oscar? Did he not tell you?" Rowan couldn't help but laugh in turn.
"I mean, we hung out, but it's like… not like that deep or whatever," Grey suddenly felt somewhere between shy and standoffish.
"Well, I don't really know either of them that well, so, hey," Rowan couldn't help but instigate, "I say keep on hanging out with him, you know?"
THE TROUBLETONES
"What crawled up your butt and died?" Naomi smirked looking at the clearly aggravated look on Juliet's face.
"None of your business," Juliet couldn't help but snap, clearly unwilling to discuss how much Bryce was bothering her.
"Trouble in paradise?" Delia quirked an eyebrow.
"If I may reiterate," Juliet took a deep breath, "It is not yours or anybody else's business," she huffed out.
"I swear you're all robots," Heather looked to Delia and then Juliet.
"That would be really cool, actually, I think," Mia nodded decisively.
"God, you're all a bunch of weirdos," Tia scrunched her nose up.
"Where's Zoey?" Leah questioned as she walked in, noticing that Zoey usually was with Tia.
"Let's not look a gift horse in the mouth," Heather raised her eyebrows.
"Where's the horse?" Trina asked curiously.
"I don't think she meant it literally," Nikki shook her head, walking to sit on the far side of the room as Cay who had walked in with her, hesitantly followed.
"In her defense," Audrey started, Isa and Sanna-Rose entering the room at the same time, "It is hard to tell sometimes,"
"We were talking about a horse," Cay spoke dryly.
"Never mind then," Audrey noted.
"A horse?" Isa verified.
"Beats me," Sanna-Rose shrugged, everyone taking their seats just as Marley made her way in the room.
"Alright, ladies! We don't have much time, so who has a song prepared to audition?" Marley smiled before looking around the room, "Wait, we're missing Zoey,"
"She's going through something," Tia shrugged, "I mean, still going through it. I feel like not much more detail is needed since Heather spilled the beans,"
"Someone had to," Heather shrugged in turn.
"Alright, that's enough," Marley sighed out, glad to know that at least Zoey wasn't completely missing, "That still leaves the question of who's ready to come sing?"
"I am," Juliet stood up, surprising her teammates.
"Amazing!" Marley grinned, "Go ahead, whenever you're comfortable,"
"Much like the other Troubletones who auditioned, I did my best to pick a song that reflects me in some regard," Juliet spoke diplomatically just before clearing her throat and starting her song.
"Keep drinkin' coffee
Stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I'd say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet
And count the cars that pass by,"
Her voice was confident and even charming. Though, it was of course evident that Juliet was relating her own life back to the lyrics, unable to tear her eyes away from any of the Troubletones who had given her a hard time since she joined.
"You've got opinions, man
We're all entitled to 'em
But I never asked
So let me thank you for your time
And try not to waste any more of mine
Get out of here fast,"
"Hm," Was all Naomi could think to say as she shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
Juliet now paid her no mind though, as she allowed herself to sway slightly to the rhythm of the music her voice becoming just slightly more gentle as she continued on.
"I hate to break it to you, babe
But I'm not drowning
There's no one here to save,"
"Wow, she's… actually really good," Leah laughed, only really recognizing Juliet as the other crying girl from the party.
"No kidding," Trina smiled, nodding in agreement, swaying nonchalantly along to the song, just as Juliet allowed her voice to become somewhat more powerful.
"Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be
Who died and made you king of anything?"
It was very clear that she had a good sense of pitch and a lot of control over her voice as she wrapped her song up.
"Let me hold your crown, babe,"
Surprised that most of the room applauded her performance, Juliet curtsied slightly before taking her seat.
"That was… very impressive, Juliet!" Marley grinned, "Anyone else?"
"I'll go," Nikki suddenly stood up.
"Aw, thanks for stepping up, Nik," Marley cooed.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," Nikki waved her mother off, "I guess I'm singing a song I kind of relate to, too? I didn't realize that was a whole theme but anyways," she shrugged as she concluded, just as her music started.
"I wanted to be like you
I wanted everything
So I tried to be like you
And I got swept away,"
Her voice was cool and collected, those who knew Nikki immediately surprised by how seriously she already had seemed to be taking this.
"I didn't know that it was so cold
And you needed someone to show you the way
So I took your hand and we figured out that
When the tide comes, I'd take you away,"
"Is she singing about you?" Delia couldn't help but ask Cay who only met her with a shrug, confused by the song choice.
"If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here,"
Nikki once again surprised her peers with how strong and emotive her voice was, reminding both Leah and Marley of Jake.
"So lonely inside
So busy out there
And all you wanted was somebody who cares,"
Everyone still shocked and even more so as she sang out with an alarming amount of what could only be described as melancholy on the last line, just as she started to wrap up.
"Please, can you tell me?
So I can finally see
Where you go when you're gone,"
Nikki offered an almost sad smile as everyone clapped.
"Wow, Nikki that was…. Very moving," Marley offered a kind smile just as the bell rang, "Alright! That means this afternoon is Isa and Heather! I'll see you girls then!"
As the girls shuffled their way out of the room, Nikki was distracted by a pull on her arm.
"What was that about?" Cay suddenly asked, almost defensively.
"What was what about?" Nikki raised her eyebrows in response.
"That song? That wasn't for me was it? I don't need you to save me. Or whatever point it was that you were trying to make," Cay shook her head.
"Cay, it's not like that. That's not why I sang it," Nikki huffed out, defeated.
"So, why did you sing it then?" Cay furrowed her eyebrows, suddenly confused.
"Because all I wanted is somebody who cares," Nikki shook her head.
"What? You're my girlfriend. I care about you, I…" Cay stumbled over her words, surprised as she had no idea where this was coming from.
"Forget it," Nikki sighed out once more, "I'll see you later okay?"
And with that, Nikki wandered off, leaving Cay to wonder what the hell just happened.
THE WARBLERS
"Hey, are you okay?" Zach surprised Addison by coming up beside him in the hallway.
"Yeah, though I'd be better if people stopped asking me that," Addison laughed, "Why?"
"Well, I, you know, heard about your mom and her new boyfriend? Well, I heard it through Kate who heard it through Eric but… uh, I just hope you're cool?" Zach tilted his head awkwardly, "I remember when Oscar was adopted and then when he started transitioning and obviously it's not the same but I guess I kinda get your family being shaken up a little bit?"
"Um, thanks, Zach," Addison let out a light chuckle, "I didn't… realize it was getting around so much. You're right it's not the same thing but uh… thanks?" He sighed out, not expecting this today. Addison knew Zach's heart was in the right place, but it didn't make him feel much better.
"Anytime, buddy," Zach patted his back lightly, a proud smile on his face as he clearly did not catch that the conversation made Addison vaguely uncomfortable as they turned a corner and walked into their glee meeting, noticing they were the last two to walk in.
"Hey," Eric spoke softly as Addison took a seat next to him, "I've been looking for you,"
"Sorry," Addison shook his head, speaking quietly in turn, "Just a lot going through my head right now,"
"Gentlemen," Teddy spoke up clearing his throat, trying to get them all to quiet down and wrap up their own conversations, "Have we made any process on potential regionals songs?"
"Not since you won't let me sing Fireflies," Mack grumbled, once again forgetting he was technically head of the council.
"Yeah! Stop censoring us!" Sutton called out suddenly, "I, Sutton Puckerman, would never censor any of you or your song choices. Vote Sutton for council!"
"Sutton, there's a time and a place," Ambrose spoke dryly, though his tone was not unkind as he put a hand on Sutton's shoulder in an attempt to restrain him.
"Both protective and afraid of a little competition?" Sutton laughed, "I knew you were the man for me,"
"Moving on," Teddy groaned, looking to Trent for help who simply shrugged in response, "Oh, Addison? Did you have something to say?" Teddy noticed Addison's hand meekly raised.
"Yeah, I uh, I don't know how good of a song choice this is for regionals? But I did have a song I wanted to try out if that was okay? Just like, for me, I guess?" Addison sighed out.
"Ooh, he's going rogue!" Tommy grinned excitedly.
"Do you know what going rogue means?" Oliver lifted a single eyebrow.
"It's like red, right? The color?" Frank tried.
"I think that's rouge?" Michael piped in, trying to help.
"Yeah, rouge!" Bob nodded enthusiastically.
"Addison!" Teddy called out once more, "Please… please, go ahead,"
"I'm uh, going to use an instrument like the other guys did too, if that's cool?" Addison shrugged before moving to take a seat at the piano on the far end of the room, beginning to play a gentle melody as he made himself comfortable, taking a deep breath as he began singing.
"I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
I'm just out to find
The better part of me,"
While his peers were somewhat surprised by the seriousness of the song they continued to listen politely as he started on the chorus.
"I'm more than a bird, I'm more than a plane
I'm more than some pretty face beside a train
And it's not easy to be me,"
"What's more than a bird and more than a plane?" Mack whispered to Tommy.
"A bird-plane. Obviously," Tommy waved his friend off.
"I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
Men weren't meant to ride
With clouds between their knees,"
While at the beginning of a song Addison's voice was gentle against the piano music, his vocals were quickly growing less rehearsed and more emotional and raw.
"I'm only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one-way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me,"
Continuing to play away on the piano, Addison still sang out, a handful of the other Warblers now humming as back up, Addison's voice reaching a point of power nobody knew he had.
"Inside of me
Inside of me
Yeah, inside of me
Inside of me,"
Addison stayed singing powerfully and emotionally as he began to wrap up the song, the other Warblers growing more quiet once again.
"I'm only a man in a funny red sheet
I'm only a man looking for a dream
I'm only a man in a funny red sheet,"
Looking over to his peers for the first time since he had began singing, Addison saw faces of both concern and fascination.
"And it's not easy, ooh, ooh, ooh," He sang out, pausing to swallow hard, "It's not easy to be me,"
Though it was silent for a slight second when he finished, the room soon applauded for their fellow Warbler.
"That was incredibly well done, Addison," Trent smiled kindly, having a vague idea of what was going at home for Addison, "Thank you very much for sharing that with us,"
As the bell rang, the boys began to file out, Zach, once again, butting into someone else's life.
"So," He grinned stepping in time with Oliver, "How are things going with you and your secret lady?"
"Have you ever heard of an inside voice?" Oliver replied in hushed tones, "Jesus,"
"Okay, okay, sorry," Zach did his best to match his volume to Oliver's, "But that doesn't answer my question,"
"It's just texting, dude," Oliver sighed out, "It's not that deep,"
"What are we talking about over here, gents?" Sutton smiled cheekily joining the two seniors.
"Nothing," Oliver raised his eyebrows before shooting a look to Zach as a warning to keep quiet before picking up his pace, "I'll see both of you later,"
VOCAL ADRENALINE
"Are we ready to start?" Harmony asked walking in and looking at the group of kids before her.
"What's got you in such a rush?" Kendall asked curiously.
"I'm not in a rush, I just don't want to be here," Harmony answered honestly.
"Harmony, please," Unique sighed out, clearly defeated, "We're both just a bit… tense, since the regionals information is meant to come out today,"
"Which brings us to the next point, we still need to work on dancing, but first," Harmony paused, "Did anyone else have anyone have a song they wanted to try to like re-audition or whatever?"
Before anyone else had a chance to respond, Xavier called out, "Mom! We can't start without Emery!"
"Who?" Anthony questioned, looking around the room.
"You really need to learn who your teammates are," Leslie shook her head.
"Sure, Pilar. Like I'm going to listen to the new girl," Anthony rolled his eyes.
"I'm Pilar," Pilar spoke up, unsure of whether to laugh or be insulted.
"I'm Dana!" Dana called out cheerfully.
"We know," Chloe patted them on the back.
"Wait," Sawyer finally was caught up on everything, "So where's Emery?"
"That's the problem, Einstein, we don't know," Sydney groaned, "Jude? Thoughts?"
"Why me?" Jude shifted uncomfortably as all eyes turned on him.
"Well… you and Emery are close right?" Steven tried.
"Interesting," Ingrid spoke to nobody in particular.
"And it's not like you don't also have a track record of not showing up to glee," Sydney noted.
"I don't know where Emery is and I don't know what else you want me to say," Jude crossed his arms over his chest.
"Oh, they texted me," Isaac suddenly noticed, "I guess she's not coming?"
"Well did she say why?" Harmony questioned, not really caring.
"They sort of got some… difficult news this week," Kate suddenly spoke up, "Probably just processing that,"
"What kind of news?" Xavier gasped.
"It's really not my place to say," Kate nodded slowly.
"Her absent dad just started dating an overbearing mother. You guys know Addison and Zoey? Their mom." Kendall took her turn suddenly speaking up.
"What?" There was suddenly collective murmuring in the auditorium.
"How do you know that?" Leslie questioned.
"I know everything," Kendall smirked.
"And who are you texting?" Harmony narrowed her eyes and Kendall on her phone.
"None of your business," Kendall suddenly stiffened up.
"Oh, bold of you to say," Jude shook his head.
"Alright everyone that is enough," Unique tried to grab control of the room once more, "Let's get back to the matter at hand. Is anyone going to sing today?"
"Me! Me me me!" Dana jumped up and began waving eccentrically.
"Oh good," Harmony spoke dryly, "Alright, Abrams, go ahead,"
"Yay!" Dana grinned as they ran up onto the stage, pointing at the band as they began playing.
While Isaac, Steven, Chloe and Sawyer all immediately recognized the song, it wasn't long before the rest of the group began clueing in.
"Not again," Sydney groaned.
As the music continued, even Harmony and Unique began to realize what it was. Despite there being no words to the song, Dana began singing out "do do do's" and "da da's" in time, all while performing the worm for a full three minutes and 45 seconds.
While most of Vocal Adrenaline fully enjoyed the performance, many of them even dancing along in their seats, Harmony was quick to shoo Dana off the stage.
"Dana, while that performance of Sandstorm was certainly… a performance, it was a waste of our morning."
"I love Darude!" Was all Dana had to say before frolicking off the stage.
"Alright everyone," Unique sighed out, "Thank you for your time this morning. We'll see you this afternoon. And while I can't believe this is something I have to remind you, please try to make sure that any of your potential songs have words."
THURSDAY AFTERNOON, NEW DIRECTIONS
"I know," Felix nodded, coming up behind Zoey.
"I would ask what you know, but I already know that, just in general, you know absolutely nothing," Zoey sneered.
"Rude and dare I say uncalled for," Felix rolled his eyes before turning to stop directly in front of Zoey, "I know about your mom and Roderick,"
"Excuse me?" Zoey scoffed, her voice dangerously quiet, "How the hell did you find out?"
"Heather told me. And then Addison did. And then Tia and Mia. Weirdly enough you're the only one who didn't. Unless you count Emery, which I don't. So what gives with that?" Felix spoke feigning smarminess.
"It's not your place to know," Zoey spoke simply, "And I don't want to talk about it,"
"It's not my place to know?" Felix took his turn to scoff, "You mean everyone else gets to know but me?"
"I already asked you to leave me the hell alone and you couldn't do that. Seriously. Fuck off," She sneered before walking off.
"What was that about?" Bryce questioned, meeting Felix just as they both turned into the New Directions choir room.
"You know that kid Emery in Vocal Adrenaline? Her dad is dating Zoey's mom, and apparently, I'm the last person to know about it," Felix sighed out.
"Of course I know Emery!" Sophie walked in, not paying attention to the fact that she was butting into their conversation, "Other than my darling dearest sister Trina, Emery's my bestest best friend,"
"Am I nothing to you?" Flora and Rey surprised each other by making the same sort of half joke in sync.
"Spooky," Lex noted, laughing as he also walked into the room.
"More like completely beyond creepy," Savannah scrunched her nose up.
"Hey, be nice," Finley warned, giving his girlfriend a small nudge.
"They can handle it," Savannah rolled her eyes.
"We're still here you know," Flora noted, "You don't need to talk about us like we're not in the room,"
Before Savannah had the chance to retort, she found herself being interrupted.
"Aw, there it is!" Bryce called out, "Look at the happy couple holding hands!"
He of course, was referring to Kyla and Oscar who both blushed profusely at being called out by their friend.
"A whole couple huh?" Simon laughed, "When did that happen?"
"Just this morning," Kyla nodded slowly, "But I guess news travels fast,"
"Well either way," Hazel spoke slowly, taking a seat next to Rey, "Congratulations,"
"Thanks," Oscar smiled, giving Kyla's hand a small squeeze before letting go.
"I see you're still rocking the emo look, Oscar," Rowan laughed as they, along with Grey were the last two to enter the room, other than their teacher.
"Yeah, well, I haven't changed since this morning, so," Oscar spoke dryly.
"I still think it suits you," Grey smirked, sitting down.
"Alright guys," Mr. Schue entered the room with a piece of paper in his hand, "Here I have the themes for regionals as well as who we'll be competing against. But before we do that, was there any other songs we wanted to try? Just to get it out of our system?"
"We actually had one," Sophie gestured to herself and to Flora and Rey.
"Please, go ahead then, girls," Mr. Schue smiled.
"So, while you know, the more… rock sounding stuff was okay, we really just wanted to try something different?" Flora began to explain, "It's uh, well, it's a song I can sort of relate to a little bit,"
"Me too," Rey smiled shyly, vaguely in Hazel's direction, surprising the group by admitting
"Okay," Mr. Schue spoke slowly tentatively, not knowing the extent of Flora's relationship with Anthony or that they were even in an exclusive relationship, but cautious anyways, "Whenever you're ready,"
As the girls took their position they shared a knowing look and smile, Sophie started singing.
"I was running on an empty heart,
Not a trace of gasoline
Trying to dim every single spark
That could hurt, that could burn all of me,"
Her voice was as crisp and clear as always, and per usual when the three girls performed, Sophie lead the choreography just as Rey moved closer to the front to sing out her part.
"Like a soldier on the battleground
Lying wounded on the field
I was fighting alone with a broken sword
Now I'm caught in a war with no shield,"
While Rey once again made shy eye contact with Hazel, it did not last long as the girls switched their spots around and Flora took the chorus.
"If you hold me now and leave me never,
Say you'll stay with me forever
Then I surrender, surrender
If you hold me now and leave me never,
Say you'll stay with me forever
Then I surrender, surrender
Surrender, surrender,"
While she sang out beautifully, Will still couldn't help but feeling somewhat cynical about the performance just as all three girls finished out the song together.
"Hold me now and leave me never,
Say you'll stay with me forever
Then I surrender, surrender
Then I surrender, surrender,"
Ending with a bow, the girls smiled before making their way to their seats as the rest of the club applauded for them.
"That was… really good," Hazel smiled, reaching over to gently hold one of Rey's hands, both of their faces flushed.
Thankfully, nobody else had noticed as it was quite obvious Mr. Schue had no intention on thinking or talking about that particular performance for longer than necessary, instead deciding to talk about what he was sure they were all waiting for.
"Good job girls," His words were clearly half hearted as he once again held the piece of paper in his hand out to the group of teens together, "Alright guys, and the first theme for regionals is…. Country!"
THE TROUBLETONES
"Nice of you to join us," Heather snickered as she entered the room just moments before Zoey
"What the hell is your problem?" Zoey practically stormed to Heather, shoving her slightly.
"Excuse me?" Heather narrowed her eyes, shoving Zoey back slightly, "What the hell is your problem?"
"Should we…" Trina started, looking over to Sanna-Rose, Naomi, and Leah who were the only other girls in the room, "Do something?"
"I don't think interjecting will help," Leah shook her head.
"I kind of want to see who wins," Naomi shrugged.
"You blabbed your big mouth about my mom dating that… loser," Zoey shoved Heather much harder this time.
"Only because we care about you and deserved to know!" Heather's jaw dropped surprised at the violent turn this conversation was taking, but was never one to back down, matching the velocity of her shove back to Zoey.
"Oh fuck you!" Zoey practically spat, "You don't deserve to know shit! None of you do!" Zoey now reached out, and open-hand slapped Heather hard across the face.
"Woah, woah, I think that's enough…" Sanna-Rose spoke up but cautiously so as she was afraid of causing even more problems.
"What the hell is going on in here?" Mia called out looking at the scene before her as Tia followed in behind, Zoey practically foaming at the mouth, Heather holding her cheek in her hand.
"I'm about to kill your cousin is what's about to happen," Heather finally got the words out, and made way to move, seemingly to hit Zoey back but soon found herself being held back by Mia just as Tia made way to hold Zoey back.
"You guys couldn't have been cool for like thirty seconds?" Audrey gasped looking at them as she walked in, Isa, admittedly, hiding behind her.
"What's going on in here?" Marley rushed in, having heard the commotion from down the hall.
"Zoey just bitch slapped me across the face!" Heather yelled out, clearly still very frustrated.
"Zoey?" Marley looked to the girl in question, "What… why would you do that?"
"Because it's not fair that Heather is airing my business to everyone at this stupid fucking school," Zoey responded like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Airing dirty laundry? That's nothing new for this group. Right, Leah?" Nikki raised her eyebrows as she walked in the room, Cay behind her, but sitting on opposite sides.
"Oh, like you're in a place to preach to us," Naomi rolled her eyes, "You were a part of that. Not to mention shoving your weird crumbling relationship in all of our faces,"
"Do you ever mind your own business?" Juliet suddenly spoke up, clearly tired of Naomi's antics.
"Nobody in here can mind their own business, that's the problem," Cay rolled her eyes.
"What the hell did I miss?" Delia walked in, being the last girl to join the room.
"So much," Naomi laughed dryly, "I'll catch you up after,"
"That's enough!" Marley suddenly screamed, all girls stopping to turn at her, surprised at her raising her voice, or that she could even get that loud, "I know there's a lot going on with all of you right now. But with regionals just a few weeks away we need to try our best to get along,"
"That would be a lot easier if we weren't getting slapped," Heather noted, shooting a look to Zoey on the far other side of the room.
"It would be a lot easier if we didn't do things that warranted a slap," Zoey snapped right back.
"Seriously, you guys," Marley sighed out, clearly defeated, "Can we please, please, just let bygones be bygones for this meeting?"
"What's in it for us?" Nikki quirked an eyebrow.
"I… have the list of regionals themes. And who all the groups are competing against. Which I will tell you but only if we make it through this meeting in one piece," Marley sighed once more.
After a few sporadic mumbles and 'fine's, being spoke across the room, it seemed that the girls had all come to a consensus.
"Great," Marley sighed out, "Now, pretending none of this just happened…. Isa? Would you like to come sing a song?"
"Uh, sure," Isa nodded, doing her best to put her bubbly self forward, but still being cautious about whatever it was that just happened.
"Go ahead and tell us about yourself," Marley smiled encouragingly.
"Alright, well, my name is Isabella Go… well, that's my American name? I'm from South Korea, where I'm Go Yi-Seul. But I've been studying English for a long time and," she paused to take a breath, the optimistic smile never leaving her face, "I decided to study abroad until I graduate, so I'm staying with Audrey and her mother right now. Audrey had mentioned that the Troubletones were recruiting so that's why I'm here! I love to sing and dance and… yeah. I was actually going to do my audition song in Korean if that's okay?" she concluded with a small nod.
"That's great," Marley continued to grin, happy that the fighting she'd walked into hadn't completely put Isa off from being here, and excited about the prospect of singing in a different language, "Please, whenever you're ready!"
As the music started, Isa smiled, looking to Audrey who gave a reassuring nod as Isa took a deep breath, knowing she had full choreography planned as well.
"Little bit of that
Little bit of this
Little bit of that
Gimme-"
She started confidently, getting in position and ready to truly perform.
"That doesn't sound very Korean," Mia noted, not mal-intentioned, but genuinely confused.
"Neo mwonde jakku saenggakna
Jajonsim sanghae aega ta
Eolguli tteugeobgo gaseumeun gyesok ttwieo
Nae momi mamdaero an dwae eojireowo,"
Isa grinned as she showed off her very impressive dancing, surprising the group by how easily she pulled off singing and dancing at the same time, all while keeping a wide grin on her face.
"Is that Korean enough for you?" Heather smirked, nudging Mia.
"Neon han jumui morae gata
Jabhil deut jabhiji anha
Neon swibji anheun geol geuraeseo deo kkeullyeo
Nae mami mamdaero an dwae eoieobseo,"
Isa continued to move around fluidly, as Audrey let out a loud cheer in support, Trina matching her enthusiasm, thoroughly impressed.
"Jigeum neoreul wonhaneun
Nae sumgyeoli neukkyeojini
Neol barabogo isseodo
Missing you
Seotun nal
Won't you set me free,"
Isa's voice was confident and strong and held a power that was not expected due to her relatively small frame. The surprise that she saw in the rest of the Troubletones' eyes was enough to make her giggle for just a quick moment to herself, and push her to do even better.
"Baby nal teojil geotcheoreom anajwo
Geuman saenggakhae mwoga geuri eoryeowo
Geojitmalcheoreom kiseuhaejwo naega neoege
Majimak sarangin geotcheoreom,"
Getting ready to wrap her song up, Isa was happy to see that more or less half of the girls were swaying in sync along with the music, especially happy to see that her fellow newbie, Sanna-Rose, was leading the group in cheering for her.
"Majimakcheoreom ma-ma-majimakcheoreom
Majimak bamin geotcheoreom Love
Majimakcheoreom ma-ma-majimakcheoreom
Naeil ttawin eobtneun geotcheoreom,"
Isa ended with a strong pose, breathing somewhat heavily as she had just put her whole body into that performance, but a smile on her face wider than any of them had ever seen, which only grew as the room applauded.
"Holy cow!" Marley laughed clapping, "That was… beyond impressive! Great job, Isa!"
"Thank you so much," Isa nodded graciously, moving to take her seat next to Audrey who congratulated her on a great audition.
"Alright, so that leaves…" Marley let out a deep, deep sigh before finishing her thought, "Heather,"
"Look who's finally going to audition," Audrey couldn't help but snicker.
"You win this one, Fabray," Heather rolled her eyes, "Alright, reluctantly, here is my audition for the Troubletones,"
Taking a deep breath, Heather started the song, already surprising her peers by the fact that she had seemingly choose a genuine song to sing, instead of making a spectacle per usual.
"I've got another confession to make
I'm your fool
Everyone's got their chains to break
Holdin' you,
Were you born to resist or be abused?"
While Heather was still not the best singer in the group, her improvement was undeniable.
"I'm surprised she's taking this so… seriously," Naomi raised a skeptical eyebrow.
"Is someone getting the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best,"
"There it is," Delia sighed out, shaking her head as Heather opted to just repeat the same two words over and over again instead of singing the real song.
This, unfortunately, went on for the remainder of the song, all of the girls exchanging a glances, Heather surprisingly not sounding awful, though it was clear she had chosen this route to make a point. What the point was, however, was anyone's guess.
"The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best,"
The beat picking up after what felt like an eternity, Heather's voice suddenly grew louder and louder, continuing on her two words.
"The best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, THE BEST, the best,"
"Jesus Christ," Zoey mumbled, and fighting the urge to get up and just walk away as Heather finally started on the last part of her song.
The best, the best, the best, the best, the best,"
Smiling at the bored, annoyed, and almost tortured faces of her peers, Heather let out the last line with a dramatic sigh.
"The best of you," She concluded with a small bow, opting to ignore the fact that Mia was the only person clapping for her.
"That was…. Certainly an audition. Thank you, Heather," Marley stood up, shaking her head, "Alright… are you girls ready to hear the themes for regionals?"
"As long as they aren't happy fun time kumbaya bull shit, I think we'll be fine," Zoey surprised the group by speaking up, though she crossed her arms tightly over her chest.
"First theme is… country," Marley sighed out, looking to her girls trying to gauge any sort of reaction.
"That's… doable," Leah nodded, trying to give her mother some peace of mind.
"The second theme is…" Marley paused, holding back a laugh of pure disbelief, fighting hard to not look directly at Zoey, "Feel-good,"
THE WARBLERS
"I'm sure you're all wondering why I've gathered you here today," Sutton spoke, clearing his throat.
"First of all," Teddy sighed out, quickly growing tired of Sutton's antics, "You did not gather us. Secondly, this is a scheduled glee meeting which is why we're all gathered here. Thirdly and lastly, you're directly standing in front of the council and so are directly in the way. Please take your seat,"
"Censorship!" Sutton called out as though he was making a valid point, reluctantly sitting down, though making sure it was next to Ambrose, "That doesn't mean this competition is over," Sutton winked.
"There is no competition, Sutton," Ambrose shook his head, remembering what Teddy had told him a few weeks back about Ambrose's spot on the council being, more or less, guaranteed.
"He's actually kind of right," Tommy realized, "There's going to be two spots on the council next year,"
"And while one will be a vote done by all of you," Teddy explained, "The current council and I will be selecting the other spot,"
"So there really is only one spot, just, in terms of the vote," Michael noted, "Especially if the council has already decided on their choice?"
"Well… have you?" Eric turned to face the council, "Decided on your choice, I mean?"
"We were going to wait until after regionals…" Mack started his thought, looking over to the other councilmen.
"But that is neither here nor there," Teddy suddenly spoke up before Mack or Tommy could give away their choice, "We have much more pressing matters,"
"Yeah like, where's Trent?" Bob suddenly noticed.
"He had some important business to attend to," Teddy spoke calmly, knowing the real reason Trent was gone was because he was waiting on the regionals list.
"Well, me and a few other guys put something together, so can we uh, go ahead and perform?" Zach raised his eyebrows.
"Yes, by all means!" Tommy grinned, getting up out of his seat.
"Where are you going?" Mack asked curiously.
"I'm obviously one of the other guys," Tommy laughed, "Come on, Frank!"
And just like that Zach, Tommy and Frank were stood in the middle of the room, preparing to sing their song.
"Mona, Mona, Mona, Mona
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Mona, Mona, Mona, Mona
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah,"
All three sang in sync together, Bob, Eric and Addison all recognizing the song and jumping in to back them up. Smiling at the new backup, Tommy immediately started singing in a relatively high range, though he carried all of the notes well, his vocals just as impressive as they always were.
"Girl, you're a walking masterpiece
Shame they keep you under lock and key
You're a diamond, I was born a thief
No one else does what you do to me,"
Deciding to also jump in, Sutton, Ambrose and Oliver all surprised the group as they made way to join the other Warblers.
"'Cause I don't even know what to do around you," Zach talk-sang with a wide grin.
"I don't even know, I don't even know," Tommy and Frank repeated in mock hushed tones.
"I feel a little dangerous around you," Zach continued, smiling as he noticed Michael, Mack and Teddy all join the rest of the Warblers in backing the group up.
"I don't even know, I don't even know," Frank and Teddy repeated once again before Frank sang out on their own.
"Heart starts beating right out of my chest
And I'm feeling my palms starting to sweat
You're more than a thrill
And I gotta have you,"
Frank's voice was cool and strong as the three Warblers stood in the middle of their brethren, Tommy leading the whole group in very loose choreography as the three leading continued to do just that, Tommy taking the main melody as Frank and Zach harmonized, the other Warblers continuing on the backup.
"You're the Mona Lisa, baby
I'm thinking I can steal you, maybe
They say it can't be done, but baby
Even if I just got one in a million
I'm gonna take my chances,"
Smiling as they all moved more freely around the room, the nine Warblers who weren't originally a part of the song began chanting "Mona, Mona, Mona, Mona," as the other three continued to lead.
"I think I'm gonna steel ya," Tommy sang out confidently.
"You're my Mona Lisa," Zach took his turn singing, surprising himself and everyone else with his higher range.
"I think I'm gonna steel ya," Frank matched the higher range of the two boys he was signing with, just as all thee paused dramatically to finish out the song, the other Warblers quickly following suit.
"Even if I just got one in a million
I'm gonna take my chances,"
"Well, well, well," Trent laughed, clapping as he walked in, "Very well done, my fabulous Warblers!"
"Thank you, thank you," Tommy took a dramatic bow, all of the Warblers now applauding themselves for another successful spontaneous jam session.
"Now, if you'd all be so kind, I do have some pretty big news…" Trent trailed off an excited look on his face.
"An elephant broke into the grocery store and stole all the peanuts?!" Frank gasped.
"….no," Trent stifled a laugh, "I have the regionals list!"
"What are the themes?" Michael piped up.
"Who are we competing against?" Ambrose asked almost nervously.
"What day are we competing?" Tommy asked excitedly.
"Woah, woah, one thing at a time," Trent laughed, "Alright, so… the first theme is country,"
"Like nations of the world?" Mack tilted his head to the side.
"How are you head of the council?" Oliver scoffed.
"Not countries," Teddy let out a deep sigh, "Country. Like, honky tonk."
"Oh," Mack nodded, mulling it over, "Cool!"
"The next theme is a feel-good song," Trent smiled, knowing they'd be able to knock that one out of the park.
"Oh, we've got that on lock," Zach grinned proudly at his father who continued smiling back, "What's the third theme, Pops?"
"It just says… mystery?" Trent looked, squinting his eyes as he looked at the description under the words.
"Oh sick," Addison laughed, "Let's sing What's New Scooby-Doo? That's a song about mysteries,"
"I think most likely," Teddy let out yet another, deep, deep sigh, "It means a theme that we'll find out closer to the day of the performance,"
"According to this… you are absolutely correct, Teddy," Trent chuckled, "It says that the mystery theme will be different at each regionals competition. Each group will learn what it is… only two hours before they perform,"
"That's…. kind of scary," Eric noted.
"I guess that just means we're going to put our whole bussy into country and feel-good songs then, huh, lads?" Sutton nodded definitively.
"Please never say that again," Ambrose sighed out.
"Alright, does anyone have any suggestions off the top of their head?" Trent quickly tried to move the conversation along.
"I… might have something," Michael thought out loud.
VOCAL ADRENALINE
"All I'm saying," Sydney spoke to the few other members of Vocal Adrenaline scattered around her, "Is that we better be competing against the New Directions. I will absolutely crush them at all costs,"
"Why do you have such a vendetta against them?" Ingrid quirked an eyebrow.
"We sort of… always lose to them," Kate admitted sheepishly.
"Are they really that good?" Pilar questioned, both curiously and nervously.
"Who?" Sawyer asked, wanting to be kept in the loop as they came in.
"New Directions, I'm guessing," Chloe shrugged, "My mom won't shut up about them,"
"Why would your mom talk about them?" Pilar questioned, trying to keep track of everyone and everything.
"Wow, you are really new, huh?" Isaac couldn't help but laugh.
"You were new not too long ago," Kendall reminded him.
"So were you," Isaac spoke, confused as to why Kendall thought that was a valid point.
"Most of us are new this year, right?" Leslie verified.
"Yes, which is exactly why we have to work twice as hard to kick the New Directions asses this year," Sydney reminded the group.
"Why are we worried about them? We've got something they don't," Anthony spoke smugly, of course, referring to himself.
"An idiot who fell in love with the competition?" Sydney raised their eyebrows.
"Pretty sure every team's got at least one of those," Jude pointed out.
"Hey!" Xavier pouted, "I fell in love with Trina long before we were competitors!"
"Wait, are we competing against the Troubletones?" Steven asked, only catching what Xavier had said.
"I hope not, they're really good," Sawyer noted.
"So are we!" Kate tried to keep it positive.
"Wrong. Anthony, Steven and I are really good," Sydney pointed out, "The rest of you all are… okay,"
"I think even that's a stretch," Kendall laughed, "We can see you, you know," Kendall suddenly turned to face Emery who was trying to quietly enter.
"Congrats?" Emery shrugged, taking a seat away from everyone else.
"Glad to see you decided to join us," Harmony spoke forcefully to Emery as she made her way to the front, Unique, per usual, not too far behind.
"I'd say my pleasure but, well," Emery simply shrugged.
"Oh good, she kept the negative attitude in her absence," Sydney noted.
"I was gone for one meeting. Not a big deal," Emery was quickly growing frustrated with everyone paying so much attention to them.
"It is when we're this close to regionals," Unique spoke, admittedly, quite frustrated with Emery, "So we need you to take this a little bit more seriously, and cut the bad attitude. We've had enough of this negativity,"
"So unless you've got a song to sing or something important to add, please quit it with the awful attitude," Harmony put emphasis on the last two words.
"I actually… did have a song," Emery spoke meekly.
"Oh," Unique was surprised, "In that case… please go on,"
As Emery, per usual, fumbled with her too long sweater sleeves, once they got on the stage, she finally found herself speaking up, "I'm sure most of you know what's sort of… been going on. I'm not usually one who's much to share but you already know my relationship with my mom is nonexistent and my relationship with my dad is… strained at best. And things the last few days have been… tough. This song isn't really a re-audition like we talked about at the beginning of the week more just… something I have to get off my chest, I guess?"
"Do you have any idea what she means?" Pilar asked quietly.
"I have a lot to get you caught up on," Chloe shook her head in response as Emery's song began playing slowly.
"I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did
You fell so hard
I've learned the hard way
To never let it get that far,"
Emery immediately surprised their group by showing any sort of emotion and also by the almost subtle strength of their voice as they began to sing the chorus.
"Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me
But everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid,"
As her voice reached higher notes than anyone knew she was capable of, half of the group wondered if Emery had been holding out on her vocal abilities while the other half quickly were growing concerned for Emery's home life.
"I watched you die
I heard you cry every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should have known better than to lean on me,"
Despite the sympathetic and comforting looks from Kate, Jude and Isaac, as well as the visible and vocal support from Xavier, Emery remained focused on the song, clearly feeling and relating to the lyrics, an almost sad bitterness overcoming her.
"You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain
And now I cry in the middle of the night
For the same damn thing,"
Emery once again surprised the group by successfully delivering a high belt, though Anthony and Sydney were the only two who seemed to notice as everyone else continued to look on as what Emery could only assume was pity.
"Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I try my hardest just to forget everything
Because of you
I don't know how to let anyone else in,"
Emery continued to sing, beginning to wrap up the song, the last line they sang clearly striking a chord as she now tried to stop herself from becoming too emotional, swallowing hard to prevent crying as she let her voice grow loud and powerful once more.
"Because of you
I'm ashamed of my life because it's empty
Because of you
I am afraid,"
Emery's voice suddenly going soft and quiet they finished out the song, very visibly on the verge of bursting into tears.
"Because of you
Because of you,"
"Emery that was…. Incredible. Thank you for being so vulnerable with the group," Unique nodded, suddenly feeling bad for losing her temper with Emery earlier.
Emery nodded, quickly turning to make their way off the stage, relieved to see that Jude had gotten up to meet her, pulling her into a long, comforting hug.
"Alright, well," Harmony cleared her throat, not quite sure where to go from here as Emery recomposed herself, making their way to sit back down with Jude, "I suppose now is a good as time as any to open the regionals information?"
Suddenly all of the teens in the room had seemed to forget about the performance they'd just seen, nothing but the competition on their minds.
"Alright let's see," Unique stood up with Harmony, "the first theme is country,"
"Yee heckin haw!" Dana called out excitedly.
"The next theme is feel-good," Harmony grinned, knowing they could absolutely crush that.
"And finally… oh," Unique was surprised at the last theme, "Lastly, there's a mystery theme that won't be revealed to us until the day of regionals,"
"What?" Kendall's eyes went wide.
"How are we supposed to prepare for that?" Anthony gasped, "This is blasphemy!"
"I think that's the point," Kate spoke slowly, "The not being able to prepare I mean, not the blasphemy,"
"Well, we're good at thinking on our feet," Steven nodded, "We did it at sectionals, remember?"
"No, because I wasn't there," Ingrid spoke dryly but laughed.
"Enough of the less important stuff, who are we competing against?" Sydney asked, on the literal edge of her seat.
"No," Harmony gasped as she read the name of one of their competitive teams, "No, no, no, no, this can't be happening."
"Who is it?" Sawyer asked nervously.
"The Warblers?" Kate asked nervously, knowing her brother and boyfriend were on that team.
"The Troubletones?" Xavier also asked nervously, of course, thinking about Trina.
"New Directions?" Sydney asked hopefully.
"The Unitards! My old group!" Harmony announced once she got over the pure shock, "Now this is blasphemy!"
"So there are no groups we actually know competing against each other?" Isaac raised his eyebrows.
"Oh no," Unique shook her head, laughing, "We aren't, of course, but two of our sort of sister glee clubs will be," she nodded, looking at the schedules for all of the regional competitions.
"Well," Chloe finally spoke up after a moment of silence, "Who is it? Who's competing against each other?"
THURSDAY AFTERNOON
"Yo," Felix called out as he entered the house, "Did you guys know Madison and Roderick are dating?"
"Yo," Alistair laughed in response, "Uh, no? And that certainly has nothing to do with why we asked about Roderick the other day,"
"You're about as good at lying as you are at selling weed," Heather noted.
"Hey, he's great at his job," Spencer gave Heather a small shove, "Look at this nice house we live in. You know where that money came from?"
"We do now," Heather rolled her eyes.
"Hello? Back on topic?" Felix was beyond surprised and confused to find that he was the only person in this house who seemed to be worried about the situation at hand, "Why didn't you tell us?"
"Not our place," Spencer shrugged, "Besides, we figured you'd find out soon enough,"
"Who else knows?" Felix asked curiously.
"All of the Troubletones do," Heather spoke dryly, "I've got the hand print of your bitch ass girlfriend on my face to prove it,"
"Zoey slapped you?" Alistair raised his eyebrows.
"Good for her," Felix decided on.
"Did you hit her back?" Spencer wondered out loud.
"No, my bitch ass girlfriend held me back," Heather sighed out, "Anyways, word travels fast so if I had to guess I'd say that just about everyone knows by now,"
"How are their kids taking it?" Alistair questioned.
"I don't really talk to Addison or Emery and we just learned Zoey slapped me so I'm not exactly sure how you want me to answer that," Heather grumbled.
"I've been talking to Addison a bit, he seems chill," Felix shrugged.
"He didn't slap Kate did he?" Heather mused.
"Why would he…" Felix was very clearly confused.
"Thought slapping their boyfriend's sister might run in the family," Heather concluded with a shrug.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON
As the Warblers had spent the last two days perfecting a potential regionals number, they all stood in position in front of Trent, who was eagerly awaiting to see what the song could be, and how it would turn out. The boys standing and moving in perfect sync, Trent was happy to see that even just in the instrumental they had all managed to harmonize. Trent continued to grin widely as Zach and Frank made their way to the front, the rest of the Warblers still dancing.
"I could lift you up
I could show you what you wanna see
And take you where you wanna be,"
Zach took the main melody while Frank harmonized, nobody more impressed with Zach's singing improvement than himself. Moving to the side slightly, Bob and Michael now moved up, singing together with Michael singing out the melody and Bob harmonizing, the two sounding absolutely brilliant together.
"You could be my luck
Even if the sky is falling down
I know that we'll be safe and sound,"
All four Warblers coming to stand together, they called out in perfect unison, "We're safe and sound,"
Moving seamlessly back into the rest of the group, it was now Oliver and Addison's turn to make way to the front, Oliver harmonizing, as Addison smiled knowing that even though it was a hard week for him, he had a whole group of people who supported him, just as he sang the main melody.
"I could fill your cup
You know my river won't evaporate
This world we still appreciate,"
Addison and Oliver now moved to the side as they, much like the other Warblers followed the precise choreography that Sutton and Tommy had come up with, just as the two so-called choreographers made way to sing together, Sutton taking the main melody.
"You could be my luck
Even in a hurricane of frowns
I know that we'll be safe and sound,"
The four boys now moving to join the other eight, they smiled as they all continued to move in sync, singing all together in perfect harmony.
"Safe and sound
We're safe and sound
Safe and sound
We're safe and sound
Hold your ground
We're safe and sound
Safe and sound,"
Eric and Mack now stepped forward, Eric taking the lead, Mack happily harmonizing as they stepped in absolute perfect sync.
"I could show you love
In a tidal wave of mystery
You'll still be standing next to me,"
Teddy offered Mack a small smile as himself and Ambrose now made way to sing together, Teddy harmonizing as Ambrose's cool voice perfectly carried out the melody.
"You could be my luck
Even if we're six feet underground
I know that we'll be safe and sound,"
Stepping together, the four now sang in perfect sync once more, "We're safe and sound,"
All twelve Warblers gathered together once more, half of them singing out confidently while the other half continued to create the instrumental.
"Safe and sound
Safe and sound
Hold your ground
Safe and sound,"
Now stepping a few feet away from each other and into three groups, the first, composed of Zach, Frank, Bob and Michael all sang together.
"I could lift you up
I could show you what you wanna see
And take you where you wanna be,"
The second group, composed of Addison, Oliver, Sutton and Tommy took their turn, all four boys, even Oliver, smiling widely as they sang.
"You could be my luck
Even if the sky is falling down
I know that we'll be safe and sound,"
The third and final group; Eric, Mack, Ambrose and Teddy also smiled as they all sang together once more.
"I could lift you up
I could show you what you wanna see
And take you where you wanna be,"
The Warblers now all turned, perfectly through each other and the other groups to reassemble themselves into a full group as they finished the song out together.
"You could be my luck
Even if the sky is falling down
I know that we'll be safe and sound
We're safe and sound
We're safe and sound
We're safe and sound
We're safe and sound
Safe and sound
We're safe and sound
Safe and sound
We're safe and sound
Hold your ground
We're safe and sound
Safe and sound
We're safe and sound,"
As they finished with heavy breaths, it was Addison who finally broke the silence, asking Trent the question that was on all of their minds, "So… what did you think?"
"I think…" Trent started slowly, a kind smile creeping onto his face, "We've just found our feel-good song for regionals,"
